Rihanna & A$AP Rocky Show Off Baby Boy Riot Rose in New Photos

He’s here and he’s adorable! Rihanna and A$AP Rocky have finally unveiled the first photos of Riot Rose, their new baby boy and second child together, through a Diggzy-helmed photshoot posted to the photographer’s Instagram page.

In the image, Rihanna, decked out in a denim and navy streetwear-nodding outfit, smizes for the camera while RZA, her firstborn son with the rapper, holds on to her leg. A smiling Rocky complements her style with a pair of denim jeans and a white sleeveless tank top as he gently holds baby Riot up to the camera. “It’s a FAMILY thing ??,” photographer Diggzy captioned the post. “Welcome to the World Riot Rose ?” He also shared additional snaps of the family in his Instagram Stories.

Rihanna revealed her second pregnancy on Feb. 12 during her headlining Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show performance. The “Lift Me Up” singer confirmed that she was expecting through a British Vogue cover story featuring her family, which was released days after the performance. Rihanna’s second pregnancy was revealed mere months after she gave birth to RZA Athelston Mayers, who arrived in May 2022.

RiRi and Rocky’s new son’s name appears to be a reference to “RIOT (Rowdy Pipe’n),” a 2023 Rocky track in which he raps, “Luxe balm up in my palm/ New collab’ with my baby mom.”

On Friday (Sept. 15), Rihanna launched a long-awaited Puma collaboration. Dubbed Fenty x Puma Avanti C, the new sneaker line marks the singer-actress’ first under a new partnership with Puma. The chrome-centric sneaker was made available for both children and adults.

HHW Gaming: Massive Xbox Leak Confirms New Series X Console, Phil Spencer Wanting To Buy Nintendo & More

Xbox Series X 'Brooklin'

Source: Microsoft / Xbox Series X ‘Brooklin’

Another massive leak, spilling some juicy Xbox details, has the video game world buzzing.

An FTC leak has produced documents detailing some of Xbox’s future plans and another massive acquisition. The biggest news from the leak was that Xbox plans to drop what it calls a “console refresh” of the Xbox Series X called ‘Brooklin.’

It has been confirmed that it was Microsoft were the one’s who “leaked” the information after accidentally loading it onto a government website, per Bloomberg’s reporting.

Anyway, Brooklin is a new Xbox Series X console version that ditches the original “box shape” small fridge look for a new circular design plus a much-needed increased internal storage of 2TB.

Gamesradar reports that the “console refresh” will have the same price as the previous console with tweaks like a faster wireless connection, more storage as mentioned above, eco-friendly features to reduce the console’s carbon footprint, ditching the disc drive, and even an updated controller that could finally bring it on par, or close to the greatness that is the PS5’s DualSense controller.

The new controller, code-named Sebille, is “more immersive” and will feature gyro support, Bluetooth 5.2, and a direct Cloud connection. There will also be “precision haptic feedback” that doubles as speakers.

“Improved longevity” is also a feature of the Sebille controller, thanks to new modular thumbsticks.

According to the leaks, the controller will launch sometime in August 2024, around the same time as E3 2024, when the company was set to reveal its latest offerings to the video game world.

There are also plans for an Xbox Series S refresh due in August, with the Brooklin console coming in late October, right in time for Black Friday and the Christmas shopping season.

Phil Spencer Was Dreaming of Video Game Domination

The new console and controller weren’t the only news about the FTC leak. According to leaked emails, Xbox Chief Phil Spencer wanted to bring Nintendo into the Xbox ecosystem.

In the August 2020 email sent right before Microsoft bought Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax, Spencer called a possible acquisition of Nintendo “a career moment.”

Spencer’s lust didn’t stop there. He also expressed interest in Steam owner Valve and Warner Bros’ collection of game studios like Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm Studios and Rocksteady, the game studio behind the Batman Arkham Series.

Per IGN:

“Nintendo is THE prime asset for us in gaming and today gaming is our most likely path to consumer relevance,” Spencer wrote in the email.

“I’ve had numerous conversations with the LT of Nintendo about tighter collaboration and feel like if any US company would have a chance with Nintendo we are probably in the best position.”

However, Spencer outlined a number of blocks on the merger, including the fact Nintendo seemed uninterested in selling up. Nintendo is “sitting on a big pile of cash”, Spencer said, and was apparently happy with its current position. As a result, Spencer said he couldn’t “see an angle” on a buyout in the short term, adding: “I don’t think a hostile action would be a good move… so we are playing the long game.”

Well damn.

‘Beckham’ Documentary Trailer Details David Beckham’s Rise to Football Fame, Love Affair With ‘Posh Spice’ Victoria

Former soccer star David Beckham was legendary for his ability to bend free kicks into the goal during a lauded two-decade career that included league titles in England, France, Spain and the U.S. But the headline-grabbing midfielder with the chiseled looks of a male model and sartorial style of a jet-setting fashionista struggled with the instant fame he achieved on the pitch, as well as the relentless scrutiny that came with his relationship with former Spice Girls member Victoria “Post Spice” Adams.

Those are among the story lines in the first trailer for the upcoming Netflix four-part documentary series, Beckham. The nearly three-minute preview that dropped on Tuesday morning (Sept. 19) opens with footage of Beckham scoring on the field before pivoting to archival tape of the London-born footballer as a child, with the Inter Miami Football Club co-owner revealing that he “never did well at school.”

The reason, of course, was because all he ever wanted to do was play football. Victoria makes the scene just 22 seconds into the preview, revealing that her manager at the time kept counseling her to keep their relationship “under wraps” during a period when she was beginning to emerge on her own after a world-beating run as part of the Spice Girls in the early and mid-1990s.

“So we would meet in car parks… and that’s not as seedy as it sounds,” she says in the promo for the series that begins airing on Oct. 4 that was directed by Oscar-winner Fisher Stevens (The Cove, Crazy Love). The couple began dating in 1997 and got engaged the following year, welcoming the first of their four children, Brooklyn, in March 1999, just four months before their wedding. After the pair became the fashion and sports worlds’ most photogenic couple, Beckham says his life became “something different,” as their faces were splashed on adverts all around the world and the media attention began to eclipse his on-field play.

“We were worried he’d lose all what he’d worked for, cause football come first and all of a sudden it wasn’t,” says his mother, Sandra West. The scrutiny and backlash was so intense that Beckham says he wasn’t eating or sleeping at the time, a troubling period that was heightened when his Manchester United coach, Alex Ferguson, hurled a boot that caused a gash over Beckham’s eye after a bitter loss to rival Arsenal in Feb. 2003.

“It’s really entertaining with the circus comes to town, right? Unless you’re in it,” Victoria says amid tape of the family driving through massive hordes of fans as Beckham relates that the couple were “drowning” from the attention. The full series promises to give fans a mixture of “never-before-seen personal archive footage from the last 40 years, candid current-day moments and interviews with the family, friends and footballing figures who have been part of his journey.”

Tech N9ne, Head Da Don ‘Pull Out’ All the Stops: Video Premiere

Summer may be ending. But having fun while living life on your own terms is always in season for Tech N9ne. And the indie hip-hop pioneer illustrates how he does just that in the video for his latest single, “Pull Out” featuring Head Da Don.

Sliding into a brand new red Maserati with butterfly doors, Tech N9ne and fellow passenger Head Da Don cruise around Tech’s Kansas City, Missouri stomping ground, meeting women and handing out CD-styled invitations for a fly pool party at a mansion. Along the way, the pair rap to a head-boppin’, banging beat.

On the no-holds-barred first verse, Tech totes up his creds: “They said, ‘Tech N9na washed up.’ / I gotta tell ‘em, ‘Pull out the facts’ / Lot of ‘em stuck on planet rock / like I can’t pull out some plaques / What I scripted makes me tickets / Now I pull out the stacks / Cause I brought Independence, Overland Park and every hood out for rap.”

“When I heard that beat from Goodro, then that [pull out] hook from Head Da Don, I knew immediately that the song would get us back up on radio and the charts,” Tech N9ne tells Billboard. “This is just the beginning of the fire songs coming off my Bliss LP.”

Released in July in the midst of celebrations for hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, Bliss is the follow-up to 2021 album Asin9ne. Describing Bliss as “a mirror to society,” the project marks Tech’s 24th album via his Strange Music label — which will celebrate its own 25th anniversary in 2024.

With its forays into R&B, soul, alternative and heavy metal plus a host of guests including Joyner Lucas, Durand Bernarr, RMR and Qveen Herby, the 25-track Bliss finds the prolific Tech still in full command of his signature fast-rhyming flow and fearless genre fusion.

In addition to “Pull Out,” album highlights include “Fatha Fig Ya (Food for Thought)” featuring RMR, “W H A T (We’re Hungry and Thirsty)” featuring Kim Dracula and Hu$h and “Knock,” a master seminar in lyricism with Tech (Kansas City), Conway the Machine (Buffalo), X-Raided (Sacramento) and Joyner Lucas (Boston).

“You’ve got a quartet of MCs from different regions just crushing it,” Tech says about the track in his recent bio. “My East Coast fans are always like, ‘We want to hear you on some boom bap!’ So we got this incredible beat from Dame The Producer. Knock is amazing for 50 years of hip-hip.”

Between operating his successful merchandise empire and teaming with Kansas City’s Boulevard Brewery for his craft beer Bou Lou, Tech N9ne will be co-headlining a North America tour with rock band — and fellow genre-busters — the Hollywood Undead this fall.

The Hollywood & N9ne trek kicks off Oct. 16 in Chesterfield, Missouri and wraps in Nashville on Nov. 19. Stops along the way include Chicago (Oct. 18), Las Vegas (Oct. 27), New York (Nov. 8) and Atlanta (Nov. 14). For more information, visit hollywoodandn9netour.com.

Olivia Rodrigo Reveals Her Favorite ‘Guts’ Lyric & Addresses Who ‘Lacy’ Is About

Although Guts has topped charts on both sides of the pond and launched two Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles, there is still much about the album yet to be discovered — at least according to the answers Olivia Rodrigo gave during her visit to the TODAY show’s “8 Questions Before 8AM” segment on Monday (Sept. 18).

The pop star revealed that Guts‘ opener “All-American Bitch” houses her favorite lyric on the entire album. “I don’t know, the one that’s really jumping out me is — I love the line ‘I got class and integrity/ Just like a d–n Kennedy,” she said. Of course, the actual lyric replaces “d–n” with “godd–n,” but Rodrigo opted for a moment of self-censorship.

The Q&A comes about a week after the 20-year-old Grammy winner performed two Guts tracks — “Vampire” and “Get Him Back!” — for the program’s 2023 Citi Concert Series on Sept. 8. She also performed “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U” from Sour, her blockbuster debut album.

Just like the album’s pre-release singles — the Hot 100 No. 1 single “Vampire” and “Bad Idea Right?” (No. 7) — the set’s deep cuts have also been making waves among Rodrigo devotees and casual listeners alike. “Lacy,” in particular, has garnered a lot of attention due to the mysterious nature of its subject matter. During the Q&A, a visibly flustered Rodrigo answered, “All my songs are about me and about how I feel, I don’t know!” when asked who the standout track was about.

The standard edition of Guts includes 12 tracks, while each of the four limited-edition vinyl copies of the album boast one hidden bonus track. To that end, Rodrigo also teased that there may be more surprises to uncover. “There definitely are some hidden things,” she told TODAY. “I just recommend you buy Guts and see for yourself!”

Throughout the rapid-fire portion of the Q&A, the “Good 4 U” singer — who’s a self-professed Twihard — also revealed that she’s proudly Team Edward, loves to belt out Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” in the car and claims “Cell Block Tango” as her favorite musical theatre song.

After Death of Collaborator Pharoah Sanders, Floating Points on ‘Heavy’ Task of Performing Their Acclaimed Album

When Floating Points was recording with Pharoah Sanders in the summer of 2019, he was moving quickly. Possibly too fast.

“I didn’t have very much time to work with Pharoah,” says the British producer born Sam Shepherd, “and so I felt this pressure to just constantly be delivering music.”

But Sanders — the legendary tenor saxophonist who rose to prominence in the ’60s playing with John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane and other greats while also distinguishing himself as a luminary of the spiritual jazz movement — put his foot on the metaphorical brakes during those 10 days making music at Sargent Recorders, a studio in Los Angeles’ Historic Filipinotown neighborhood.

“He was just calming, slowing everything down,” Shepherd recalls. “He was like, ‘Let’s just listen to this,’ and we’d sit there and listen to the whole thing. And then we’d listen to it again, then again. Three hours would pass and we’d just be listening and listening.”

It wasn’t the speed at which Shepherd — an electronic musician accustomed to the pace of the internet — was used to working. Working with Sanders, more than 40 years Shepherd’s senior, felt like a throwback to the era when there was only so much recording tape available.

“We’d sit and listen,” Shepherd continues, “Then Pharoah would be like, ‘I’m just gonna go into the booth and play this phrase over this thing.’ He’d go in there having had listened to it for a few hours and just play something so succinct and meaningful. He knows it so well that he’s embodied it. It’s not like he’s searching while he’s playing, he’s done all that. He doesn’t need to search on his instrument, he’s done the searching within himself.”

This contemplative, unhurried workflow resulted in Promises, the 2021 collaborative album from Floating Points and Sanders, along with the London Symphony Orchestra. Clocking in at 46 minutes and composed of nine movements, Promises is leisurely, deep and often fairly mystic, with the Philharmonic adding moments of climactic grandeur and Sanders’ playing serving as the sonic and spiritual center, his signature tone offering moments of elegance and cacophony.

Released on Luaka Bop, the label founded by David Byrne in 1988, Promises earned wide and high-brow acclaim, getting glowing reviews from The New York Times, The New Yorker — who called it “a remarkably intimate experience — and earning a 9.0 rating from Pitchfork. The album spent three weeks on Top Albums Sales, where it reached No. 32 in April of 2021.

“It took me by surprise,” Shepherd says of this success. “We originally pressed very few vinyl copies, because we thought this was a relatively niche, jazz/classical crossover record. It connected more than we’d imagined. I’d say, ‘Pharoah, you know, people really like this record.’ He’s like, ‘Oh, yeah?’ And I’d be like, ‘No, people really like this record, Pharoah.’”

As the pandemic waned, the two artists — Shepherd in the U.K. and Sanders in Los Angeles — along with their respective teams, discussed doing a one-time only live performance of Promises. The Hollywood Bowl was selected as the venue, and Shepherd booked a flight to Los Angeles to meet with Sanders and make plans. Then, the week Shepherd was supposed to get on the plane, Sanders died, passing away on Sept. 24, 2022 at the age of 81. A cause of death was not given.

“So it was very much a long period of of quiet,” Shepherd says of what happened next. “Then conversations about doing it started to get bounced around again… It took me awhile to warm up to the idea.”

But Shepherd did, eventually, warm. So tomorrow (Sept. 20), almost a year to the day after Sanders’ passing, Shepherd will perform the first and likely only live performance of Promises at the Hollywood Bowl.

Speaking to Billboard on the phone from the Burbank studio hosting rehearsals for the show, Shepherd — enthusiastic, thoughtful and completely affable in conversation — allows that doing it without Sanders being around to give it his blessing “feels a little heavy for me. I haven’t vocalized it, I don’t even think I fully understand it. It’s not a normal thing for a musician to collaborate on a project with someone, and that person is no longer around.”

Without the mythic figure at the center of the project, Shepherd has instead assembled a sort of musical league of legends formed from friends, family and frequent collaborators.

Clearly the most crucial element in designing the performance was figuring out who would play Sanders’ part. Luckily, this answer was also obviou:. British saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings is a mutual friend of Sanders and Shepherd’s, who played in Shepherd’s first band and is a person who, Shepherd says, “Pharoah was a great admirer of.” While there’s demand to tour Promises, Shepherd says it simply isn’t possible, given that Hutchings is planning to put down his sax to focus on the flute shortly after the show.

Also in the band: electronic artist Kara-Lis Coverdale, “who every time I hear her play is just the most innovative, interesting electronic music I’ve heard in in my life.” Hinako Omori — “another amazing composer I’ve known for years in London” — will play the celesta. John Escreet, “one of the greatest pianists I’ve ever heard” will keyboard and synthesizer. Jeffrey Makinson, the organist at the U.K.’s towering Lincoln Cathedral and also Shepherds’ brother-in-law, will play an electric organ. Lara Serafin, who transcribed the previously unwritten down Promises into sheet music and “knows the piece better than anyone on a forensic level” will play electronics. Four Tet and Caribou — frequent Floating Points collaborators and also Shepherds’ “bezzie mates,” will play piano and electronics, respectively.

“They get the record because they were there when I was mixing it,” Shepherd says of these two producers and pals. “They were really part of the whole process of it all coming together — and they know me and I know them, and I know how they play.”

The show will be conducted by Los Angeles favorite Miguel Atwood Ferguson, who will guide the band, members of the L.A. Studio Symphony String Orchestra and special guests the Sun Ra Arkestra, with whom Sanders played with throughout his career.

Surveying the gear laid out in the rehearsal space, Shepherd says Promises is, in a way, quite simple, rooted in four looping chords. “On a technical level, everyone can play their parts.”

As such, rehearsals are more about maintaining morale while also getting to the essence of what makes the piece “kind of magical, I guess,” says Shepherd. “That’s something I’ve got to find again from the beginning.” When asked if he knows how he’s going to do that, he answers, “No, I don’t,” with a laugh.

But then Shepherd, who also has a PhD in neuroscience and epigenetics and first connected with Sanders after Sanders heard his smart, spacial 2015 electronic album Elaenia, weighs the question for a minute. He returns to the recording sessions with Sanders, when Sanders would request that they just sit back and listen to the music.

“That sort of calmness and listening more intently is something I need to try and impart on [this] big group by sort of saying, ‘We need to slow it all down, we need to not feel like this is tedious or not getting anywhere, because it is getting somewhere, it’s just that we’ve got to give our patience to this project as well,’” he relates. “That’s something Pharoah taught me, definitely, patience in listening.”

(He adds that, in his own fast-paced fervor, he recorded enough music with Sanders to make another two albums — but says there is no plans to complete or release these projects. Sanders’ 1977 album Pharoah was re-released this week via Luaka Bop.)

Given the mysterious, ineffable nature of Promises‘ magic, I ask Shepherd how he’ll know if the show was a success. He thinks about it, then refers to the album’s “Movement 8,” which closes with a minute of silence before the orchestra comes back in for the climax.

“That’s going to be a pinnacle moment for me — if that silence is really silent in the Bowl, and all you hear is the noise of some of the stage gear and buzzing through the speakers,” he shares. “If I’ve gotten a little corner of this noisey-ass American city just to be quiet, and ten or twelve or fifteen thousand people are sitting there together quietly because the previous 40 minutes of music has just brought them to this place… I would feel that’s a big moment.”

One can argue that having people sitting in slowed-down stillness would be what Sanders would have wanted to happen, too.

TikTok Rolls Out Labels for AI-Generated Content

TikTok announced new tools to help creators label content that was generated by artificial intelligence. In addition, the company said on Tuesday (Sept. 19) that it plans to “start testing ways to label AI-generated content automatically.”

“AI enables incredible creative opportunities, but can potentially confuse or mislead viewers if they’re not aware content was generated or edited with AI,” the company wrote. “Labeling content helps address this, by making clear to viewers when content is significantly altered or modified by AI technology.”

As AI technology has become better — at generating credible-looking images or mimicking pop stars’ voices, for example — and more popular, regulators have expressed increasing concern about the technology’s potential for mis-use.

In July, President Biden’s administration announced that seven leading AI companies made voluntary commitments “to help move toward safe, secure, and transparent development of AI technology.” One key point: “The companies commit to developing robust technical mechanisms to ensure that users know when content is AI generated, such as a watermarking system. This action enables creativity with AI to flourish but reduces the dangers of fraud and deception.”

Voluntary commitments are, of course, voluntary, which is likely why TikTok also announced that it will “begin testing an ‘AI-generated’ label that we eventually plan to apply automatically to content that we detect was edited or created with AI.” Tools to determine whether an image has been crafted by AI already exist, and some are better than others. In June, The New York Times tested five programs, finding that the “services are advancing rapidly, but at times fall short.”

The challenge is that as detection technology improves, so does the tech for evading detection. Cynthia Rudin, a computer science and engineering professor at Duke University, told the paper that “every time somebody builds a better generator, people build better discriminators, and then people use the better discriminator to build a better generator. The generators are designed to be able to fool a detector.”

Similar detection efforts are being discussed in the music industry as it debates how to weigh AI-generated songs relative to tracks that incorporate human input.

“You have technologies out there in the market today that can detect an AI-generated track with 99.9% accuracy, versus a human-created track,” Believe co-founder and CEO Denis Ladegaillerie said in April. “We need to finalize the testing, we need to deploy,” he added, “but these technologies exist.”

The streaming service Deezer laid out its own plan to “develop tools to detect AI-generated content” in June. “From an economic point of view, what matters most is [regulating] the things that really go viral, and usually those are the AI-generated songs that use fake voices or copied voices without approval,” Deezer CEO Jeronimo Folgueira told Billboard this summer.

Moises, another AI-technology company, dove into the fray as well, announcing its own set of new tools on Aug. 1. “There’s definitely a lot of chatter” about this, Matt Henninger, Moises’ vp of sales and business development told Billboard. “There’s a lot of testing of different products.”

Jelly Roll is one of the most nominated artists leading up to this year’s CMA Awards; the singer-songwriter-rapper scored five nominations, including nods for single of the year (“Need a Favor”) and male vocalist of the year.
