Debby Friday Wins 2023 Polaris Prize for Debut Album ‘Good Luck’

On Tuesday (Sept. 19) evening in Toronto, Debby Friday won the 2023 Polaris Music Prize for her debut album, Good Luck

Accepting the award for best Canadian album of the year and an accompanying $50,000 prize, the Toronto-based industrial electronic artist was as pleasantly surprised as anyone in the audience at Toronto’s Massey Hall.

“I’m in shock!” she said through both laughter and tears. “This is something I didn’t even realize was a possibility. I was born in Nigeria in a small village. Now I’m here today, and it just feels like a miracle.”

Now in its 18th year, the award continues to evolve and surprise. Chosen by a panel of music journalists and professionals, it’s the closest thing the country has to a pure critics’ prize – an award that disregards factors like record label, genre and chart position to focus solely on the always slippery concept of “artistic merit.” That makes it harder to predict than any other award in the country, but it makes it a good barometer for the critical conversation in Canadian music.

Once criticized for awarding only indie rock artists, the Polaris Prize is now a testament to the genre-less diversity of expression within the country’s borders. Debby Friday’s music is uncategorizable – a mix of pulsing beats, adventurous production and brash, swaggering vocals equally influenced by hip-hop and punk.

On a purely sonic level, it’s distinct from previous winners such as Afrobeats artist Pierre Kwenders, rappers Cadence Weapon and Backxwash and producer Kaytranada, but it fits within the recent trend to reward artists who push at the limits of genre and create new sounds out of deeply personal influences. If Canadian music is defined by anything, it’s easy cultural fluency, an ability to mix different sounds and multicultural traditions almost by second nature.

Despite her confident and aggressive delivery, Debby Friday’s live performance of “So Hard to Tell” instead stood out with dreamy melodicism. Over electronic production, live guitar and a mini-string section of viola and cello, her vocals sounded yearning and emotional. It stood out as a memorable performance in a night filled with many.

With lengthy changeovers between performances that seemed to cater more to the CBC Music cameras than the in-person audience, last year’s gala at the Carlu in Toronto dragged on over a tiring four hours. This year, they swung hard in the other direction. Seven out of 10 of the shortlisted artists played live on the famous stage of Massey Hall (Daniel Caesar, Feist and Alvvays were on tour and unable to be there), and it often felt more like a concert than an awards show. It moved briskly over two hours and kept the focus on the music – no livestream, no extended gaps and, notably, no host at all.

In a way, that approach stayed true to the Polaris ethos, keeping the focus solely on the music. But if the intention is to put the spotlight on Canadian music people might not know, it lacked some important context. There’s a potent story behind The Sadies’ shortlisted album Colder Streams, but it wasn’t told directly. It was the long-running psychedelic country band’s final album with founding guitarist Dallas Good, who tragically passed away during its recording. The Sadies are no stranger to Massey Hall’s stage, collaborating over the years with legendary performers like Neil Young and Gord Downie, so seeing them play as a trio – Dallas’s brother Travis Good taking center stage – felt jarring yet poignant. The late Dallas wasn’t mentioned by name, but an image of him onscreen spoke a thousand words.

Indigenous songwriter Aysanabee, meanwhile, played a recording of his grandfather talking about his harrowing experience at residential school. (From the time of the first settlements until shockingly recent, Indigenous children were often taken from their families and forcefully assimilated, which is now recognized by Canada as a form of cultural genocide). It added shades of emotion to an already powerful performance, aided by his intense, soulful vocals.

Indie-folk singer-songwriter Dan Mangan also injected some heaviness, singing songs “for anyone feeling the weight” and playing to the venue’s famous acoustics by gathering his two bandmates to sing three-part harmonies into one mic.

With no host, it was up to the artists to do the heavy lifting. Or, in the case of the night’s best performance, deconstruct the whole awards show context. Hip-hop duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids, who hail from the Haida nation, built a whole talk show set, with a host named “too tall Paul” who mispronounced their name and interrupted their banter. Then, the recent Sony Music Canada signees got up on stage and brought the house down with the bouncing “Damn Right” from their EP I’m Good, HBU? Their infectious energy and bratty punchlines (maybe the only song played at Massey Hall with the word “dingleberry”) won over a notably low-energy industry crowd and earned the biggest ovation of the night.

That raised spirits for the announcement of the winner. When last year’s winner Pierre Kwenders revealed Debby Friday’s vinyl record from a Polaris Prize briefcase, the house came down. She thanked anyone who had been with her since her early EP BITCHPUNK and spoke to the power of being different. “I’ve always been a bit strange,” she said. “In retrospect, I see that’s a superpower.”

At a time when the country’s music critics are facing a crisis of disappearing outlets for arts coverage, the Polaris Prize also feels like it’s searching for an identity under executive director Amber Moyle, who took over last year. The best route is to follow Debby Friday’s advice: keep it weird.

“It’s a new soundtrack,” she captioned the series of whimsical beach photos. “Here are the back covers and vault track titles for 1989 (my version) I can’t wait for this one to be out, seriously. Thank you for playing along, sleuthing, puzzling and making these reveals so much chaotic fun (which is the best kind of fun, after all ?).”

The track list features all 16 original and bonus tracks from the 2014 album, plus the previously revealed “Vault” tracks including “Is It Over Now?,” “Now That We Don’t Talk,” “Say Don’t Go” and “Suburban Legends.” In her post, Swift revealed one more “From the Vault” track titled “‘Slut!’”

Surprisingly, there are no features on the current track list, shutting down rumors of a potential collaboration with Nicki Minaj or even Harry Styles.

The reveal comes following a Google pop-up animation to honor 1989‘s upcoming release. The 89 puzzles fans were encouraged to solve to unlock the “Taylor’s Vault” tracks resulted in so much Googling that the search engine admitted it was more than the world’s leading search destination could even handle. “Swifties, the vault is jammed! But don’t worry, there are not blank spaces inside,” it tweeted Tuesday evening. “We’re in our fix-it era and will be out of the woods soon.”

Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is arriving on October 27. See the back covers and track list on Instagram here.

MAGA Stooge Sen. Tim Scott Trending As His Presidential Hopes Flounder

Tim Scott Presidential Campaign

Sen. Tim Scott has entered his name into the presidential race sweepstakes and he appears to be landing near the bottom according to some reports. The South Carolina senator saw his name trending on X, formerly known as Twitter, earlier on Wednesday (September 20) most especially for his being against the idea of unionized workers.

A recent video of Sen. Tim Scott on the campaign trail displayed him decrying the efforts of the ongoing United Auto Workers strike, evoking the union-busting ideas of President Ronald Reagan.

“I think Ronald Reagan gave us a great example when federal employees decided they were gonna strike. You strike, you’re fired. Simple concept to me,” Scott is seen saying in the clip below courtesy of The Recount

Further, political commentator Keith Boykin recently put out a video dissecting Scott’s jab at the Republican Party for dredging up negative ideas about him because he’s surging in the polls.

As Boykin noted in a two-part video last week, Scott is not a frontrunner, as Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis own the lion’s share of the interest among GOP voters. Boykin suggests that Scott is not directly living his truth and is hiding the fact from his party that he might be gay.

Sen. Tim Scott is currently taking a lot of shots on X at the moment. Keep scrolling to see some of those comments below.

John Mayer & Ed Sheeran Duet on ‘Free Fallin” as Ed Repays the Favor by Opening LA Charity Show

When Ed Sheeran was a teenager in England, his dream was to one day open for John Mayer. On Tuesday night, that dream came true.

Mayer played a one-off solo show at LA’s Wiltern theater to benefit his Heart and Armor Foundation, and on Tuesday morning, Mayer’s named was joined by Sheeran’s on the Wiltern marquee as a special guest. It was Sheeran’s opportunity to repay the favor after Mayer filled in for opening act Khalid when the R&B singer got in a car accident ahead of a July stop at Gillette Stadium outside Boston.

Sheeran kicked off the night with a seven-song set, including a medley of his = (Equals) hits “Bad Habits” and “Shivers” and a ’90s-hip-hop-infused version of his 2014 Billboard Hot 100 top 10 “Don’t” that included snippets of “No Diggity,” “California Love” and “The Next Episode.”

And that wasn’t the last time the crowd would see Sheeran: The British singer/songwriter re-emerged during Mayer’s 16-song set, duetting on the Continuum fan favorite “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” — with Sheeran singing the 2006 song’s wailing guitar solo — and on a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’,” which has become a staple of Mayer’s live shows.

The two hugged following the duets, with Sheeran telling the crowd with a laugh, “I just said to John: I feel like I’m going to watch that on YouTube for the rest of my life. That was so special.”

Watch the “Free Fallin’” duet below:

Mayer helped establish the Heart and Armor Foundation in 2019 to support the health of veterans of war, and 100% of the proceeds from Tuesday night’s show — including two auctioned-off pairs of tickets that raised more than $16,000 — went to the charity.

Next up, Mayer returns to his solo acoustic tour starting Oct. 3 in New York and wrapping Nov. 10 back in Los Angeles. On Thursday, Sheeran will kick off season 2 of Amazon Music Live by playing after the Thursday Night Football game.

Taylor Swift Stepped Out With Sophie Turner in NYC & Fans Are Going Wild

It was the outing heard ’round the world when Taylor Swift and Sophie Turner stepped out for a girls night at New York City’s Via Carota, just weeks after news broke that the Game of Thrones actress has split from husband Joe Jonas.

The Jonas Brothers singer filed a petition for dissolution of marriage on Sept. 5 that stated “the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken.” Jonas’ petition states that the couple’s two children have been residing with him in Miami and other U.S. locations but that “it is in the best interests of the minor children that the parties have shared parental responsibility.” Moreover, his petition indicates some kind of prenuptial agreement between the couple.

Swift, meanwhile, famously dated Jonas between July and October of 2008, and the relationship infamously ended when he broke up with the “Anti-Hero” star through a very quick phone call — a move Swift publicly shaded during a 2008 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. A number of tracks on her album Fearless are believed to be about Jonas, including “Forever & Always” and her recent Taylor’s Version from the vault track, “Mr. Perfectly Fine.”

So, as expected, when the two of Jonas’ exes spent time together on Tuesday night (Sept. 19), the Internet went wild with reactions and plenty of “Mr. Perfectly Fine” references. See some of the best fan tweets below.

Watch Fat Joe Gift Bill Clinton a Pair of Terror Squad Air Force 1s

Fat Joe had a special delivery for former president of the United States Bill Clinton recently. The “Lean Back” rapper attended the Clinton Global Initiative meeting — which kicked off Sept. 18 and runs through Sept. 20 — and personally gave Clinton a pair of the Terror Squad x Nike Air Force 1 Low sneakers as a thank you for his political efforts throughout the years.

“Special delivery. Hottest sneaker in the game. Sold out in five minutes. But if I didn’t bring it to Bill, it wouldn’t be official,” the rapper tells the former president in a video shared on Instagram Tuesday (Sept. 19). Offscreen, someone asks, “Does that make him an honorary member of the squad?” to which Fat Joe wholeheartedly responded, “He’s an honorary member of the squad.”

The rapper’s praise of Clinton continued. “I love you so much man. So many years you fought for the people and we love you,” Fat Joe said. “I’m a huge fan of yours. Thank you so much for all you do for us.” Clinton appeared happy with the gift and remarked, “These are cool!” when presented with the black-and-white low-top sneakers.

Afterward, the rapper shared a black-and-white photo of the 42nd president wearing the sneakers. “YESTERDAYS PRICE TSAF1,” he captioned the snap, including three rocket-ship emojis, ending with “BILL!!!!”

The TSAF1s launched in 2007 and were exclusive for Fat Joe’s friend and family. The rare sneaker has the initials of his birth name, Joe Cartagena, on the heel of the sneaker and an embroidered “TS” for Terror Squad beneath. The sneakers were released for the general public to purchase on Sept. 16 for $150.

Clinton is far from the first person Fat Joe has gifted the TSAF1s to. Ashanti, Ludacris, Jadakiss, J Balvin, Lupe Fiasco, Fabolous, DJ Khaled, Lil Jon, A$AP Ferg, Jennifer Lopez and more have all received pairs, personally delivered by the rapper himself.

Justin Bieber Hitting “Snooze” Could Make for SZA’s Second Top 5 Hit

It’s been the slowest of burns, but “Snooze,” the swaying mid-album highlight from SZA’s blockbuster SOS, has grown into the album’s second smash hit, following the Billboard Hot 100-topping “Kill Bill.” The song has now spent 13 weeks atop Billboard‘s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, and hit a new peak of No. 7 on the Hot 100 a few weeks ago (on the chart dated Sept. 9), following the release of its captivating and star-studded music video. And now one of those guest stars — pop superstar Justin Bieber — might help the song rise even higher on next week’s chart, thanks to his appearance on the song’s new acoustic version.

With the debut of “Snooze (Acoustic)” on Friday (Sept. 15), the total official on-demand U.S. streams for “Snooze” (which includes the new acoustic version) has jumped to 12.1 million for the four-day period of Sept. 15-18, up from 7.5 million streams during the same period the week before (Sept. 8-11) — a gain of 61%, according to Luminate. (The song also more than doubled in sales, from 800 to 1,700). The resulting boost should give it a another shot of caffeine on the Hot 100 next week, perhaps resulting in it jumping from its current No. 8 placement to the chart’s top five — becoming just SZA’s second single to do so. – ANDREW UNTERBERGER

Mitski’s ‘Love’ Radiates on Streaming

Over the course of her career, Mitski has watched songs belatedly go viral and translate TikTok trends into major streaming numbers; “Washing Machine Heart,” for example, transformed from a back-half highlight of 2018’s Be the Cowboy into one of her most-streamed songs years after its release. Yet the acclaimed indie singer-songwriter has never enjoyed a hit single from a current album, and STILL hasn’t yet hit the Hot 100 chart.

Both may change if “My Love Mine All Mine,” the heartbreaking, waltzing ballad from Mitski’s new album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, continues its upward trajectory on streaming platforms. The lilting hook from the song is already getting some TikTok play, with Laufey (an artist recently familiar with scoring a viral hit) posting, “Nobody talk to me rn mother mitski just dropped and it’s perfect.”

Mitski released Inhospitable last Friday (Sept. 15), but daily streams of “My Love Mine All Mine” have increased since then – debuting with 466,000 official on-demand U.S. streams on Friday, and earning 659,000 streams on Monday (Sept. 18), according to Luminate. Meanwhile, its eye-popping music video (also released last Friday) has earned 522,000 YouTube views to date, and the song has bumped up to No. 50 on Spotify’s daily Top Songs USA chart. After last year’s Laurel Hell earned Mitski her first top 10 entry on the Billboard 200 albums chart, she’s hoping that the early breakout hit from its follow-up earns some more firsts on the singles charts. – JASON LIPSHUTZ

TikTok Snippet Campaign Nets Big Streaming Returns for Tate McRae’s “Greedy”

After several weeks of teasing, Tate McRae’s “Greedy” has debuted to immediately sizable streaming returns. According to Luminate, the breezy, self-assured pop track – which marks McRae’s first solo release in almost a year – collected over 6.3 million official on-demand audio streams during the period of September 15-18, pulling over 1.2 million streams each day. The song enjoyed a total of 1.99 million streams on its first full day of release.

“Greedy” is a successful example of a concerted TikTok-focused promotional plan. Instead of getting carried to success by a random runaway trend, McRae steadily teased snippets of “Greedy” for weeks on end, dating back to August 4. “Oh s—t, u guys want this one?” she cheekily captioned the post, which has since garnered over one million likes and 8.1 million views on the platform. Between the track’s melodic nod to Nelly Furtado and Timbaland’s “Promiscuous” and lyrics that flaunt tongue-in-cheek self-confidence, “Greedy” quickly went viral on TikTok, spawning tens of thousands of videos of users lip-syncing their favorite lines – particularly the lyric “Obvious that you want me, but I said/ I would want myself/ Baby, please believe me.” McRae encouraged her fans’ use of the snippet by stitching their videos and cheering them on.

Several different TikTok sounds – all with over 30,000 posts each – went viral on the platform, with a slightly sped-up version gaining the most traction (105,900 posts). The track’s official music video, which features choreography from Sean Bankhead, garnered over 1.8 million views in five days.

Already having reached the top 10 of both US Apple Music Pop and Spotify Global, “Greedy” is shaping up to be a particularly successful single for McRae. At the very least, the early numbers have proven that McRae, RCA label head Peter Edge and Sony Music CEO Rob Stringer made the right decision in choosing to push “Greedy.” – KYLE DENIS

BOYNEXTDOOR

The South Korean boy band makes an impressive arrival on Billboard’s charts thanks to its new EP, Why.. The six-track set, released Sept. 4 via KOZ Entertainment/Geffen Records, debuts at No. 1 on Heatseekers Albums, No. 3 on World Albums and No. 162 on the Billboard 200 with 8,000 equivalent album units earned in its opening week (Sept. 8-14), according to Luminate. Nearly all of those units were in traditional album sales, helping the set also starts at No. 10 on Top Album Sales. The EP also sparks the group’s No. 1 debut on the Emerging Artists chart and No. 64 entrance on the Billboard Artist 100. KOZ Entertainment, a subsidiary of HYBE Corporation, formed BOYNEXTDOOR earlier this year. The group comprises Jaehyun, Leehan, Riwoo, Sungho, Taesan and Woonhak.

Khamari

The singer-songwriter, from Dorchester, Mass., and now based in Los Angeles, lands on Billboard’s charts for the first time with his breakout single, “These Four Walls.” The song, released in May via RCA Records on his debut studio album A Brief Nirvana, debuts at No. 27 on Adult R&B Airplay (up 115% in plays), aided by a COLORSxSTUDIOS performance of the song released in June. Khamari has released one additional collection: his debut six-track EP Eldorado, in 2019.

Royel Otis

The Australian duo, from Sydney, scores its first Billboard chart entry, thanks to its wryly-titled single “Sofa King.” The song, released in March via Ourness/House Anxiety, debuts at No. 36 on Alternative Airplay (up 184% in plays). The song appears on the pair’s debut seven-track album Sofa Kings, released in March. Before that, the twosome released three EPs: Campus in 2021, Bar & Grill in 2022 and Going Kokomo earlier this year. The duo’s name is a combination of the two members’ first names: Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic. The act is currently on the North American leg of its Sofa Kings Tour.

Nick Shoulders

The set, released Sept. 8 on Gar Hole Records, debuts at No. 58 on the Top Current Album Sales chart with 1,000 copies sold in its opening week. He also bows at No. 38 on the Emerging Artists chart. BOI WHAT

The artist (real name: Eli Strobeck), who makes AI-generated music inspired by the Nickelodeon show Spongebob Squarepants, lands on Billboard’s charts for the first time with “Plan Z.” The song, released Sept. 8 on Hallwood Recordings, debuts at No. 14 on the Hot Hard Rock Songs chart with 710,000 official streams earned in its opening week. “Plan Z” uses AI-created vocals from the Spongebob character Plankton (voiced in the series by Mr. Lawrence) about learning the Krabby Patty Secret Formula—a recurring gag in the series. BOI WHAT has released four other AI-crafted songs: “Make a Wish (Squiddy),” “Dear Magic Conch Shell,” “Wish I Woulda Known” and “Just a Pineapple” (which has tallied over 4.5 million official streams since its Sept. 1 release). The tracks, which contain country, hip-hop and pop elements, use AI to mimic vocals from the Spongebob, Squidward, Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks characters, voiced by Tom Kenny, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke and Carolyn Lawrence, respectively. “Dear Magic Conch Shell,” notably, draws from Morgan Wallen’s “Cowgirls,” featuring ERNEST.

Bobbi Storm

The singer, dancer and writer, from Detroit, is officially a Billboard-charting artist, thanks to her song “We Can’t Forget Him.” The track debuts at No. 36 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and No. 50 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay (1.6 million radio airplay audience impressions Sept. 8-14), ahead of its wide release Friday (Sept. 22) through TRIBL Records. Storm has released eight other songs, from 2017’s “Poor Dat” through “Lazy Love” in July 2022.

Brown’s In The Air Tour will launch March 28 at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va., and will wrap with five stadium shows, including his return to Fenway Park in Boston, where Brown earlier this year made history as the first Black artist to sell out a headlining show in the venue’s 100-year history. The tour concludes with a Sept. 14 headlining concert at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Joining Brown as openers on various dates on the tour are Tyler Hubbard, Jon Pardi, Chris Young, Bailey Zimmerman, Cole Swindell, Parmalee, LOCASH and RaeLynn.

Brown was saluted with the international award during the ACM Honors celebration in Nashville, and earlier this year wrapped the international leg of his Drunk or Dreaming Tour, which visited cities including Sydney, London, Amsterdam and Berlin.

The “Famous Friends” singer just notched his 10th Country Airplay No. 1 hit with “Bury Me in Georgia,” and is gearing up to release his new single, “I Can Feel It,” on Sept. 21. The song samples Phil Collins’ drum solo from his 1981 top 20 Billboard Hot 100 hit “In The Air Tonight.” Collins is credited alongside Brown, Gabe Foust and Jaxson Free as a writer on “I Can Feel It.”

“I was playing Stagecoach and doing interviews there on-site about what would be amazing and unexpected performances you’d want to see happen,” Brown said in a statement, noting his 2023 headlining performance at Stagecoach Country Music Festival. “I think I surprised a lot of interviewers with my answers- which were ‘Cher, Phil Collins…’ and the next day I was writing in Canada and went into the write with those Icons on my mind and just love the way the song came out. I immediately knew I wanted it as my next single.”

Sorry, Not Sorry: Demi Lovato Says She Feels the ‘Most Confident’ During Sex

It kind of makes sense that Demi Lovato recently said wedding bells are ringing in their ears, because according to the singer, sorry, not sorry, she feels the best all along with boyfriend Jutes.

“I feel the most confident when I’m having sex,” Lovato (who uses they/she pronouns) said in the second part of her interview on the LadyGang podcast that dropped on Tuesday (Sept. 19), in which they discussed body image, resiliency and her new rocked-up Revamped album.

The “risqué” answer came during a round of a game called “sorry, not sorry,” during which Lovato told the show’s three hosts that they are not sorry for constantly posting pics of Jutes on their socials. “It might be cringey, but I don’t care. I love it and I think it’s cute,” Lovato said.

When the hosts laughed and said “tell me what that’s like” to Lovato’s sex swagger, Demi, 31, explained, “Cause you’re so present that you’re not thinking about what is actually like… what clouds your judgment throughout the rest of the day, or at least that’s how it is for me. It’s not that way for everybody.”

Earlier this month, Lovato told Howard Stern that she and songwriter Jutes have definitely discussed marriage. “It’s been about a year and a half [of dating], so we’re taking our time with it a little bit, you know? I think it’s important not to rush that,” they said. “We started off as friends, and we built that foundation of friendship first. There’s this partnership there that is just so magnetic, and the way that we laugh together — it’s just nonstop. I think if you can find someone that makes you feel safe, that you’re so attracted to, that you laugh with constantly, that’s the formula of a really great relationship.”

Elsewhere in the pod, while talking about her 2015 song “Confident,” Lovato also dove into what it’s like to be on stage and not always feel confident on bad body image days and having to “fake it til you make it… [but] I think I’ve just been doing it so long that it’s like second nature for me,” they said. Lovato laughed at a question about whether she would ever go back to acting, saying they’d love to do a limited series.

“Something that has kept me from going back to acting is body image issues,” explained the former Camp Rock and Sonny With a Chance star. “That’s another thing where you have to show up every single day and be on camera no matter what.” That said, Demi would consider a movie or limited-series role, but when the hosts made a pitch for the pieces of a potential EGOT, Lovato said Broadway seems like a stretch because her memory skills are not great.

Watch the LadyGang pod with Demi below (the confidence talk begins around the 32:30-minute mark).
