Will Jung Kook Go Two-for-Two at No. 1 With ‘3D’?

The Contenders is a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week (for the upcoming charts dated Oct. 14), Jung Kook looks to follow his Billboard Hot 100-topping “Seven” with a potential second straight No. 1 debut, while the currently reigning Doja Cat and other artists stand in his way.

Jung Kook feat. Jack Harlow, “3D” (Big Hit/Geffen/Interscope): “Seven,” Jung Kook’s Latto-featuring (and R-rated) pop blast, debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 back in July, and has since grown into one of the biggest worldwide hits of 2023. It topped the Billboard Global 200 for seven weeks and is still hanging around the Hot 100, ranking at No. 53 this week in its 11th frame on the listing (dated Oct. 7). Now, the solo star is in contention for a second straight debut atop the chart, with new song “3D.”

Sales will be key for the single — which features American rap star Jack Harlow, and is co-produced by longtime hitmaker BloodPop and “Dynamite” producer David Stewart. The song was released Friday, Sept. 29 and then augmented Monday, Oct. 2, as part of the seven-track 3D: The Remixes set — which also includes an instrumental version, an alternate version, a clean edit, a remix from avant-pop maestro A.G. Cook, and both sped-up and slowed-down versions. All seven tracks are currently in the top eight of the iTunes real-time chart, with the main version of “3D” still reigning five days after its release.

The question is if it will stream as well as “Seven,” which not only racked up over 150,000 in song sales in its first week, according to Luminate, but also a very impressive 21.9 million streams, including a No. 1 debut on Spotify’s Daily Top Songs USA chart. The streaming numbers for “3D” on Spotify and elsewhere have been stable, but not as resounding so far – meaning the song might ultimately need its strong sales to continue throughout the remainder of the week for the song to have a real chance of nabbing the No. 1 spot on next week’s Hot 100.

Doja Cat, “Paint the Town Red” (Kemosabe/RCA): Doja Cat’s Scarlet biggest single returns to the Hot 100’s top spot for a second frame this week, following the release of the full album. Its streams will likely recede in the album’s second week, but airplay numbers continue to grow for the Dionne Warwick-sampling pop-rap song, which climbs 9-7 on Billboard’s Radio Songs chart this week, a new peak. If the gains in airplay continue to offset any losses in streaming – which have been relatively minimal to begin with, considering the song still leads on Spotify’s Daily Top Songs USA and is No. 4 on Apple Music’s real-time chart – it should have a pretty good shot to hang on for a third week at No. 1.

SZA, “Snooze” (Top Dawg Entertainment/RCA): The little SZA single that could keeps scaling the Hot 100, hitting yet another new peak this week in its 42nd frame on the listing. She’s finally running out of space on the chart, though – at No. 2, there’s only one spot left to climb to. It could be tough for her to get there next week: The song still trails “Paint” in streams and sales, while the gap between the two is closing on radio (though “Snooze” is No. 3 on Radio Songs and still gaining) – and as she’s already released both the music video and the Justin Bieber-featuring acoustic remix of the song, SZA may be running out of ammo to shoot the track over the top. Still, few would have bet on the song getting this far, so it’d be a little foolish to doubt its ability to grab that final rung.

IN THE MIX

Tate McRae, “Greedy” (RCA): McRae’s latest isn’t likely to majorly contend for the Hot 100’s apex this week – but if it keeps growing at the rate it has been, that may not be too far off. The song rises 33-24 in its second week on the Hot 100, and continues to grow from its fast start on streaming, while radio is starting to take notice. It’s also already No. 4 on the Global 200 in its second week. At a time when the kind of classic triple-threat mold of stardom has been a little absent from top 40’s center – and given Ariana Grande in particular has been mostly out of the mix for a decently long period – there’s certainly room for McRae, her catchy new song and captivating new video to finally elbow their way into pop’s inner circle.

*NSYNC, “Better Place” (DreamWorks/RCA): The first new single in 20 years from one of the most successful pop groups of all-time – must be set for a pretty thunderous chart debut, right? Well… maybe. “Better Place” sold respectably enough in its early release this week to possibly make some kind of Hot 100 impact. But the new song, found on the upcoming Trolls Band Together soundtrack, bowed in the midst of a messy promotional situation (due to the recently ended writers’ strike and still-ongoing actors’ strike), to something of a mixed reception from pop fans – resulting in the early streaming numbers for “Place” being less than exceptional. In other words, Jung Kook’s old group is probably safe for another week in its standing as the most recent male vocal group to capture the chart’s top spot.

Victoria Beckham Reveals ‘Most Unhappy’ Moment in Her Marriage to David Beckham in ‘Beckham’ Doc

Ever since they began dating in 1997, former soccer great David Beckham and wife Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham have been under the red-hot tabloid spotlight. And never was the scrutiny more intense, and more potentially damaging to their relationship, than during the footballer’s rocky four-year tenure with the Real Madrid football club that began in 2003.

The former Spice Girls member reveals just how taxing that time was in the final episode of the new four-part Netflix documentary series Beckham, which both charts the English legend’s rise to fame during a legendary two-decade career, as well as the rocky times in his high-profile marriage to the former pop star/model.

“This was a time when anything he touched turned to gold. I remember saying, ‘You would love to get in the bath, but you can’t because every time you go to get in the bath the bloody water parts and you just walk on straight through,’” Victoria says at one point of the Messiah-like status her model-handsome husband enjoyed in the early 2000s in the series that dropped on Wednesday (Oct. 4).

Cut to a Spanish reporter asking David, “‘Do you think you’re losing out a lot because you’re married? All these women who love you, throw their [underwear] at you?,’” while an English chat show hosts asks the equally pulchritudinous singer — and then mother of their two eldest children — if she was concerned about all the women “throwing” themselves at her husband.

Dogged by allegations of David’s infidelity in the British tabloids, David says, “there was some horrible stories that were difficult to deal with” after his transfer, adding that it was the first time the couple had been put under that kind of pressure in their marriage. When the interviewer asks Victoria if that was the hardest time in their marriage, she swiftly responds, “100%. It was the hardest period for us because it felt like the world was against us.”

Worse still, she adds, it felt like “we were against each other if I’m being completely honest.” Until the Madrid transfer, she says it was like “us against everybody else. But we were together, we were connected.” But in Spain, that connection felt broken. “When we were in Spain, it didn’t really feel like we had each other either. And that’s sad,” she says. “I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me.”

Alone in a new city where he didn’t speak the language, David says the move to Madrid was disorienting, with Victoria struggling to even describe how hard it was on their family as they confronted a fresh hell every day. “It felt like we were not losing each other, but drowning,” he explains.

“It was a nightmare. From the minute we opened the door in the morning, the press were there in cars and everywhere we went, we would get followed,” Victoria says of the time that her husband still can’t quite figure out how they survived. The scrutiny expanded outward to the pair’s children, whose morning commutes to their primary schools were blown up into mad tabloid scrambles that included rude comments shouted at son Brooklyn about his parents. “It was an absolute circus — it’s really entertaining when the circus comes to town, right? Unless you’re in it,” Victoria laments.

Saying his wife is “everything” to him, David recalls that seeing Victoria upset at the attention was incredibly difficult. “But… we’re fighters and at that time we needed to fight for each other. We needed to fight for our family,” he says on the verge of tears, noting that sometimes he didn’t know how he would even walk onto the pitch and pretend that everything was okay whilst feeling “physically sick” every day at work.

“Did I resent David? If I’m being totally honest, yes I did,” Victoria says. “It was probably, if I’m being honest, the most unhappy I’ve ever been in my entire life.” How bad was it? When Victoria was scheduled to give birth to their third son Cruz in February 2005, David said he didn’t think he could be at the hospital because he had a photo shoot… with Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé. “‘Are you kidding me?’” Victoria, who was on bedrest and “about to burst” remembers saying to her husband.

Not feeling her most beautiful after the scheduled c-section, Victoria says she woke up the day after to a tabloid headline that read “What Will Posh Say?” alongside a “gorgeous” picture of Becks with the two superstar singers. “Let me tell you what Posh would say! Posh was pissed off!” she says.

The couple who married in 1999, have four children, daughter Harper (12), Cruz (18), Romeo (21) and Brooklyn (24).

The episode also gives viewers a glimpse at the the soccer player’s immense color-coordinated closet and his week’s worth of pre-selected clothes on a rack, as well as the jubilation that erupted after he won the La Liga championship with Madrid in his final season in 2007. The second half of the episode focuses on Beckham’s game-changing transfer to the Los Angeles Galaxy team that somehow made him an even bigger star and helped boost soccer to true major league status in the United States.

That move also included an Oscar-worthy “Welcome to America” party at the LA. Museum of Contemporary Art in 2007 that was thrown by pal Tom Cruise and Will Smith and which was attended by Jada Pinkett Smith, Katie Holmes, Tyrese, Ron Howard, Brooke Shields, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, Eva Longoria, Bruce Willis, Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy and Friends‘ Matthew Perry, among many others. The night famously included Cruise re-creating his Risky Business dance and Stevie Wonder singing “Happy Birthday” to the guest of honor.

Selena Gomez Reflects on Leaving Social Media After Justin Bieber Split & Bipolar Diagnosis

As the most followed woman on Instagram, Selena Gomez knows better than anyone how draining social media can be on a person’s mental health. That goes especially for times of heartbreak, something she experienced firsthand in 2018 following her split from Justin Bieber (who got engaged to his now-wife, Hailey Bieber, that same year).

After the two stars parted ways following a decade of on again, off again dating, Gomez took a break from social media that would last four years. Now back online, the “Calm Down” singer has opened up about that time in a new interview with Fast Company that chronicles the success of her Rare Beauty empire.

“I had just gotten my heart broken,” Gomez recalled. “I didn’t need to see what everyone was doing.”

“Then there were those moments of not feeling positive about how I looked because of what I’d see on Instagram,” she added, remembering how she used to think, “Wow, I wish my body looked like that.”

Gomez was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder around this time, although she didn’t share this publicly until 2020 via an Instagram Live conversation with fellow former Disney Channel star Miley Cyrus out of fear that her public image might suffer. “I grew up being a people pleaser,” she told the publication. “I had a responsibility at a very young age — young people were looking up to me. I didn’t know who I was. Having that responsibility would make me walk on eggshells a lot.”

“I thought maybe it would be damaging to tell people who I am,” she added. “It started to become a threat that freaked me out. Well, if you’re not right, then you can’t work.”

Now, at the age of 30 and the head of a mental health-oriented beauty company expected to clear $300 million in sales this year, Gomez is feeling much more confident about herself, as well as her relationship to her fans. “I’m not unattainable,” she said. “I look at someone like a Beyoncé, and I am amazed. My jaw drops. Every part of her is just impeccable, and it’s just so beautiful. I went to her show and was blown away. But I’m just not that, and that’s okay.”

“I’m me, and I’m a little silly, but I also like being sexy and fun, and I also want to do good with the time I have here,” Gomez continued. “We need goddesses like Beyoncé and Adele. But I’m just happy to be your best friend.”

‘The Voice’ Contestant LVNDR Puts a Jazzy Spin on Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’: Watch

The singer took to the stage with her guitar and delivered her soulful rendition, causing coaches John Legend and Niall Horan to turn their chairs before she could even complete the first verse.

“You used to call me on my cell phone/ Late night when you need my love/ Call me on my cell phone/ Late night when you need my love/ And I know when that hotline bling/ That can only mean one thing
I know when that hotline bling/ That can only mean one thing,” she sang.

After she gave each of the coaches lavender necklaces in their favorite colors, the commentary on LVNDR’s performance began, with Legend stating he was more than impressed with her take on the song.

“What I loved so much about it was the vibe and the feel, which was just magical and transported me. Your voice, your tone was so slinky and ethereal and felt like this [lavender] smells. It was peaceful, but also musically daring,” the EGOT winner gushed. “You made so many great melodic choices because you changed almost the entire melody. Do you write a lot of your own original material?”

“I only just started taking music seriously a few years ago,” she revealed. “I actually taught myself guitar using YouTube. I never showed anybody that I could sing.”

This cemented Legend’s impression of her. “For me, you can sing and you have a point of view and you have a story to tell and I think that’s really beautiful and it’s really fun for me to work with artists like that, so I would love to work with you,” he gushed. “It would be a joy.”

Horan was equally stunned by LVNDR and stated that he initially was considering turning his chair well before she got through the first verse. “That was something special,” he told the 27-year-old. “I was thinking, ‘Do I let her finish the first sentence before I press the button or what?’ Because I just love character, and you’ve got it in abundance.”

“I felt like I was watching a movie and listening to a soundtrack. To say that you’ve been nurturing this in your bedroom just playing the guitar off YouTube, everything you said, I kind of did the same thing,” he continued. “Those voices that when you’re facing away and you get get goosebumps and your ears perk up — because we’re over there staring at that wall staring and hoping that someone catches your attention, and you absolutely did that.”

While it was a tough decision for LVNDER, she ultimately picked the former One Direction member to be her mentor.

Zach Bryan Takes Top 3 Spots on Americana/Folk Albums Chart As ‘Boys of Faith’ Debuts

Zach Bryan triples up in the top three spots of Billboard’s Americana/Folk Albums chart dated Oct. 7, becoming only the second act ever to earn the honor.

The singer-songwriter’s self-titled LP leads for a fifth week, encompassing its entire run on the survey so far, with 66,000 equivalent album units earned Sept. 22-28, according to Luminate. His new EP, Boys of Faith, launches at No. 2 with 44,000 units and former leader American Heartbreak dips to No. 3 from No. 2 with 31,000 units.

Bryan joins only Chris Stapleton in having monopolized the chart’s top three. Stapleton did so for 11 weeks in 2017-18.

Bryan now boasts seven career Americana/Folk Albums top 10s, all tallied in just over a year and a half. In chronological order of their peaks: DeAnn (No. 6, February 2022); American Heartbreak (No. 1, 61 weeks, beginning in June 2022); Summertime Blues (No. 2, July 2022); Elisabeth (No. 6, November 2022); All My Homies Hate Ticketmaster (Live From Red Rocks) (No. 3, January 2023); Zach Bryan (No. 1, five weeks to date, beginning in September 2023); and Boys of Faith (No. 2 to date, October 2023).

Bryan ties for the ninth-most top 10s since Americana/Folk Albums began in December 2009. Bob Dylan leads with 30, followed by Neil Young with 25.

Meanwhile, Bryan charts six titles overall on the Oct. 7 Americana/Folk Albums tally, matching his mark for the most by an act in a single week. He first totaled that many on the Sept. 9 and Jan. 14 rankings.

As previously reported, Boys of Faith boys at No. 8 on the all-genre Billboard 200. It’s Bryan’s third top 10, following his self-titled No. 1 and the No. 5-peaking American Heartbreak.

All five Boys of Faith tracks debut on the Billboard Hot 100, led by “Sarah’s Place” featuring Noah Kahan at No. 14. It starts at No. 5 on Streaming Songs with 15.8 million official U.S. streams. It also begins at No. 2 on Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and No. 5 on Hot Country Songs.

Four weeks earlier, Bryan notched his first Billboard 200 No. 1 with his self-titled set, while the LP’s “I Remember Everything” featuring Kacey Musgraves debuted as his first Hot 100 leader.

Chris Tomlin Wraps Record Run to No. 1 on Hot Christian Songs With ‘Holy Forever’

Chris Tomlin’s “Holy Forever” hits No. 1 on Billboard’s streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Hot Christian Songs chart dated Oct. 7. With its 59-week trip to the penthouse, it completes the longest trek to the top in the chart’s 20-year history, surpassing Elevation Worship’s “Graves Into Gardens” featuring Brandon Lake (46 weeks, 2020-21).

Tomlin scores his seventh No. 1 on the chart and his first since “Good Good Father,” which dominated for seven weeks beginning in February 2016.

The singer-songwriter tells Billboard of his latest coronation, “Ultimately, what this chart represents is impact, and to be a part of a song like ‘Holy Forever’ and experiencing its impact is an honor. My hope is that this song continues to help people around the globe beyond anything I could imagine, see or ever know.”

“Holy Forever,” which Tomlin co-authored with Jason Ingram, Brian Johnson, Jenn Johnson and Phil Wickham, ruled Christian Airplay for six weeks beginning in August, awarding Tomlin his 11th No. 1. It ranks at No. 6 on the latest list with 5 million audience impressions Sept. 22-28, according to Luminate. It also drew 2 million official U.S. streams and sold 1,000 downloads.

David & Blessett Bring Back a Classic

Atlanta-based Anthony David and Algebra Blessett’s “Heaven” soars from No. 5 to No. 1 on Gospel Airplay, up 15% in plays. The singers’ first collaboration in over a decade marks their first entry on the chart. Billed as Anthony David featuring Algebra, they reached No. 2 on Adult R&B Airplay in 2011 with “4Evermore.”

“Heaven” was originally recorded by gospel greats BeBe & CeCe Winans and released as the title track on their 1989 set that led Top Gospel Albums, becoming the duo’s first of three chart-toppers.

BeBe Winans co-wrote the song with Keith Thomas.

“We’re definitely happy to be embraced by the gospel community,” David and Blessett shared in a statement to Billboard. “Our whole mission in music is to be inspirational and add to the culture.”

David and Blessett are currently working on an album of duets.

One New York Judge is attempting to do something most people have failed to do: shut Donald Trump up.

Disgraced former US President Donald Trump and his Truth social fingers finally got him in trouble.

Judge Arthur Engoront hit the twice impeached former Commander In Chief and his sorry legal team with a gag order after Trump attacked one of the Judge’s staffers, NPR reports.

Per NPR’s reporting, the gag order imposed on the second day of trial will determine if the legendary con artist will be liable for the   “limits posting or publicly speaking about any member of the judge’s staff.”

If Trump or his legal team fails to comply, there will be sanctions, Engoront said.

The gag order comes after two days of Trump hurling insults at the Judge and Attorney General Letitia James on his bum a** social media platform, Truth Social, and in front of cameras.

In typical Trump fashion, he told reporters outside the courtroom on Monday and Tuesday that the Judge and NY Attorney General were politically corrupt and accused James’ a Black woman, of being racist.

He also said Engoront of being “rogue.”

We are on day three of the trial, and he claims he will testify “at the appropriate time” in this proceeding.

This fraud case is one of four he is facing in New York City, and he is currently a witness on the attorney general’s and the defense’s witness lists. According to NPR, it could be several weeks before he takes the stand.

It will be must-see television when that happens cause you know Trump is going to say some absurdity.

‘My Humps’ v. ‘My Poops’: BMG Settles Lawsuit Against Toymaker Over Black Eyed Peas Parody Song

BMG has reached a settlement to end a copyright lawsuit against a toymaker that promoted a brand of “unicorn poop” with a song called “My Poops” – a scatological parody set to the tune of Black Eyed Peas’ “My Humps.”

In an order Tuesday, a federal judge said that BMG and toymaker MGA Entertainment had “reached a settlement in principle” to resolve the lawsuit, marking an abrupt end to what would have been a high-profile dispute over copyright’s fair use doctrine when it comes to parody songs.

Neither side immediately returned requests for comment or more information about the terms of the settlement, like whether any money was exchanged.

Released to promote MGA’s Poopsie Slime Surprise toys – unicorns that release sparkling “unicorn poop” slime – “My Poops” features similar musical elements to Black Eyed Peas’ 2005 hit, which reached No. 3 on the Hot 100 and spent 36 total weeks on the chart. But it replaces the words with joke lyrics like “Whatcha gonna do with all that poop, all that poop.”

In a January complaint, BMG said the song was very clearly an infringement of its copyrights. In addition to copying key musical elements, BMG said, MGA’s song features a lead vocalist who “sounds very similar” to Black Eyed Peas lead singer Fergie.

“Music, especially a hit song such as ‘My Humps,’ adds great value when incorporated into a product or used in a video advertisement, because it increases consumer recognizability, consumer engagement and attention to the product,” BMG wrote in its lawsuit. “The infringing work is so substantially similar to ‘My Humps’ that it is obvious that the infringing work was intentionally copied.”

Federal protections for fair use expressly empower people to parody existing copyrighted works, and one of the U.S. Supreme Court’s most important copyright rulings held that 2 Live Crew was allowed to release a bawdy parody of Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman” without paying royalties. But the music industry’s premiere parodist, “Weird Al” Yankovic, voluntarily chooses to license all of the songs that he parodies. And the legal analysis is undoubtedly trickier when a parody song is used for outright commercial advertising, rather than merely as a new song.

Back in 2013, the Beastie Boys sued a toy company called GoldieBlox after it released a viral parody of the group’s 1987 song “Girls” to promote its engineering and construction toys for girls. After the band threatened copyright infringement, GoldieBlox argued fair use – saying it had aimed to criticize the “highly sexist” message of the original Beastie Boys track and “further the company’s goal to break down gender stereotypes.”

But six months later, GoldieBlox agreed to a settlement in which it apologized to the Beastie Boys and agreed to donate a portion of its revenues to charities of the band’s choosing.
