Rising Rocker Petey Talks Major Label Debut, Being Loved by Mark Hoppus & More

Despite pursuing music early on — playing in a high school emo band (at the same Chicago suburban high school this writer attended) and releasing alternative-pop music in college, by his late 20s, the artist now known as Petey found himself feeling stuck in a minimum wage job without any upward mobility. “I was really confused on what direction to go in,” he recalls of 2019. “So I just decided to write and record a couple songs as an avenue or a way out of the spot that I was in. And it’s kind of crazy that that ended up being the thing, the only thing, that worked.”

He quickly scored a record deal with the independent label Terrible Records and, as he puts it, “kept trucking” through the pandemic, largely thanks to his comedic TikTok skits that helped him gain a massive following of 1.5 million. In 2021 he released his debut album, the DIY and impassioned Lean Into Life (which boasts standout track “Don’t Tell The Boys”), and now, having signed with Capitol Records earlier this year, released his major label debut USA in September. The album debuted at No. 66 on Billboard’s Top Current Album Sales chart while Petey himself appears on this week’s Emerging Artists tally at No. 30.

“Before Lean Into Life, there was nothing. So it was just like, ‘Okay, I’m gonna throw music into the void and try and win over the entire internet,’” says the artist born Peter Martin, 31. “And then afterwards I had basically two years of people really responding positively to the album. I went on tour for the first time. All the shows we played supporting the album were sold out. So I really got to see who the fans were [and that] really informed how I was gonna start writing this album. It alleviated pressure.”

As did the luxury of time — and redos. While recording Lean Into Life, if he made a mistake he’d end up sticking with it: “Maybe that sort of challenge yielded some pretty endearing results in the last record, but this one it was really nice to be like, ‘You know what, we f–ked up today. Let’s go back and try again tomorrow,’” says Petey. “And to have the resources available to be able to make those mistakes and then take our time to figure out how to solve them…there was just so much care put into this record.”

FOUNDATION

Every year on Christmas Eve, Petey and his hometown friends gather at a local bar in the Chicago suburbs. In 2018, on the drive home with longtime friend Will Crane (whose birthday also happens to land on the holiday), Petey played two songs he had recently recorded. He really liked them,” the artist says. “He dropped me off and then three weeks later, he sent me a text like, ‘Check your email, I just kind of wrote you a little plan that I think would be really fun.’”

Crane was about to move to Los Angeles himself, where Petey was already living, and suggested he help formalize a career path for his friend. “He was basically like, ‘Let’s give this the best shot that we can. Let’s at least try,’” recalls Petey. “It started with a music video. Looking back, it was so funny how seriously we took that process. But it gave us something to focus on and distract us from how ultimately stupid an endeavor like pursuing music is — because it’s just such a risky not-a-lot-of money situation.” Through the process, Crane not only became Petey’s manager but also his director – a two-for-one that became especially essential through the pandemic.

DISCOVERY

Petey says he and Crane started making TikTok videos out of boredom — and because they couldn’t tour through the pandemic. In the comedic clips, Petey plays multiple different characters of all different ages without ever really changing his look, and all of whom are navigating subtly absurd situations — from meeting with a lawyer who only uses a potato as a phone to being attacked by cats because a sniper is following him around. But the humor has had a serious impact.

Not only did the videos help Petey create a built-in following for his music, they also helped the major labels who eventually came calling understand his vision and approach — especially Capitol. “Everyone knew what was up and got the vibes,” says Petey. “I think a lot of the focus with the label is, ‘How can we help facilitate the transition of fans between just knowing the comedy stuff to knowing the comedy stuff and the music stuff.’ Capitol is just shining a light on what we’ve already been doing.”

The best example of exactly that is the music video for the album’s focus single, “Family of Six,” which Crane directed. “Even with all the major label stuff, we’re still getting scrappy,” says Petey. “We got to shoot [the video] ourselves and barely spend any money and just kind of like, run around doing funny, ridiculous stuff.” He adds he’s particularly proud of the song for the way it winds through his biggest influences while still sounding cohesive, which he credits to co-producers John DeBold and Aidan Spiro. “We had such insane chemistry,” he says. “[The album] was the most collaborative thing I’ve ever done.”

FUTURE

To celebrate the release of USA, Petey threw the first pitch at a hometown Chicago Cubs game (“I couldn’t have dreamed of a better situation – and it would have been the same dream as when I was a 6-year-old boy,” he says). Come November, he’ll hit the road for his Tour of the USA, playing 1,200-capacity rooms across the country. Unlike Lean Into Life, which he recorded with a lot of electronic elements then transformed into a rock heavy set with a full band, USA was made to be more “rock forward” from the jump. “I have the most fun when I’m going to see a pop-punk band that I fell in love with when I was 15,” he says. “Bands like Say Anything, Motion City Soundtrack … I just love the energy that it brings out of the audience. I love how it looks on stage. So I try to bring that feel to the live set.”

As it turns out, a member of one of the defining pop-punk bands is a major Petey fan. Blink-182 bassist and co-lead vocalist Mark Hoppus discovered Petey soon after Lean Into Life and has made his fandom known, even sending regular direct messages on Instagram. “Whenever he’s doing Instagram Lives backstage at the Blink shows, he’s playing Lean into Life,” laughs Petey. “He loves the [title track], which is hilarious because I have so much Blink inspired pop-punk leaning shit in my music, none of which is in that song at all.”

Looking ahead, Petey isn’t one for goals — he’s already played at festivals including Lollapalooza and Outside Lands. He does, however, have one sincere hope: “to keep this thing going. I really love this life. It gives me so much autonomy and freedom to do what I want and be where I want and spend a lot of time with people that I really care about … So if milestones like playing Coachella at a certain time slot or whatever, if that’s an indicator of my career going well and being able to keep doing this, then that’s great. I would love to be able to do this for another 10 years.”

Nathy Peluso & Young Miko Bring Their Sizzling Flow to Latin Music Week 2023 Showcase

Nathy Peluso continued to share her unmatched swagger and poetic grit at the Billboard Latin Music Week 2023 showcase on Wednesday (Oct. 4), which took place in Miami’s Oasis club. From sultry bachata and brass-powered salsa, to spitting riveting rap bars and even performing a Camilo Sesto cover (“Vivir Así Es Morir De Amor”), Nathy was on fire for her entire set. Clad in a denim dress with black leather boots and a cut-up T-shirt, the performer sang “Ateo,” “Alabame” and her latest single “Ella Tiene.”

Billboard‘s Latin Rookie of the Year and opening act Young Miko pulled up brimming with confidence while wearing a vintage black tee of Marilyn Monroe emblazoned with pink text that read “Hollywood Is Hell.” The young rapper performed her hits, including “Lisa,” “Wiggy,” “Riri” and the reggaetón number “Chulo Pt. 2.” Midway through her performance of the mellow trap banger “Big Booty,” a concertgoer threw the Puerto Rican star a pair of pink underwear. She picked it up and started twirling it as she maneuvered across the stage.

Earlier this week, both performers took part of the Boys No More! panel alongside Nicki Nicole, Kany García, María Becerra and GALE. during the discussion, Nathy said, “When I started rapping, there weren’t many women on the scene — it was a struggle, to create a space for myself. Today, we’re far from those times and I’m grateful for the work of my sisters.”

Young Miko noted, “I found out we [Kany García] were from the same [LGBTQ+] community, and it made me feel comfortable to speak with my mother. Things are now changing, today, thank God. There’s an audience that’s more receptive; there’s an audience that is looking for change.”

Celebrated for more than 30 years, the 2023 edition of Latin Music Week included a Superstar Q&A with Shakira; the Legends on Legends chat with Chencho Corleone and Vico C; Making the Hit Live! with Carin León and Pedro Capó; a panel with RBD’s Christian Chávez, Christopher von Uckermann, and Maite Perroni; Superstar Songwriter discussion with Edgar Barrera and Keityn, among many other panels, Q&As and workshops. This year’s Latin Music Week, also included showcases by Peso Pluma, Mike Bahía and Greeicy, DannyLux, and Fonseca, to name a few.

Official partners of the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Week include AT&T, Cheetos, CN Bank, Delta Air Lines, Lexus, Netflix, Michelob ULTRA, and Smirnoff.

Latin Music Week coincides with the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards ceremony, which will broadcast live from the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla., on Thursday (Oct. 5) and will air on Telemundo. It will also broadcast simultaneously on Universo, Peacock, the Telemundo App, and throughout Latin America and the Caribbean on Telemundo Internacional.

Lil Baby Shuts Down Chrisean Hook Up Rumors: “I Ain’t With The Trolling Sh*t”

Lil Baby is setting the record straight regarding his support for Chrisean Rock.

Earlier this week, the 4PF rapper took to X in a now-deleted post to deny Blueface’s allegations that he previously made advances towards Rock, writing:

“I ain’t with the trolling s**t. I be laughing at certain s**t, but [alright] now,” Lil Baby wrote. Stop playing. I ain’t never tried to talk to no [motherf**kin’] Chrisean!! Please stop attaching my name to that! I seen her at a party [and] told her some real s**t. She knows I never tried to talk to her! I know I bring attention, but Chrisean even trolling about a child [and] stuff is too far!”

The “Go Hard” rapper’s comments arrived shortly after Chrisean mentioned him on X, calling him “a real one” in response to Blueface taunting her by praising her sister, Tesheki, with whom she’s been at odds in recent months.

Despite many, including Blueface, taking the clarification as a diss towards Rock, Chrisean responded to Lil Baby’s tweets, stating that she was grateful that he “cleared the air.”

“See he finally said it,” Chrisean wrote. “FACTS TOLD YALLL I BEEN ATTACHED TO HIS NAME BECAUSE MY BABY DADDY INSECURE ASF TOLD YALL .. someone tell blue he can stop trolling me.”

In other Chrisean news, the reality star isn’t allowing the online drama to stop her from celebrating her son. Nearly one month after his birth, Chrisean Jr. has appeared in two visuals. The first, “Baby Momma Drama” with his father, Blueface, and now alongside his mother for her latest release, “Prayer For Chrisean Jr.”

Check out the heartwarming dedication to her son below.

Starting at $49.99 at Amazon, Best Buy, Target and Walmart, Assassin’s Creed Mirage is playable on Xbox Series X and PS5, as well as the previous generations Xbox One and PS4 (and Windows PC), in two editions: Launch and Deluxe.

His mentor Roshan, played by Shohreh Aghdashloo, trains him to join the Hidden One, an order of Middle Eastern assassins.

Atmos To Close Up Shop In The US, Focus On Asia Market

Foot Locker To Acquire 2 Footwear Retailers For $1.1 Billion

Source: Scott Olson / Getty

After more than two decades in the retail game, the Tokyo-bred footwear store known as Atmos will be closing up shop once and for all… well, at least in the US.

According to Footwear News, the Foot Locker Inc. owned retailer will be shutting down shop in North America as it’s three brick-and-mortar stores will be closing down along with it’s website and will instead focus on it’s Japanese and Asia market. The news comes just two years after Foot Locker Inc. dropped $1.1 billion to acquire both Atmos and the West Coast shoe store chain, WSS.

While Atmos was known to carry a few exclusive sneaker drops over the years, heads would rarely get a dub on those website raffles, so sneakerheads aren’t too heartbroken over the news (no shots).

Footwear News reports:

“The Atmos brand has a unique and authentic identity, character and spirit. Given the strength of Atmos in Japan and Asia, we are focused on further investing in this market. Though in line with this focus and our plans for simplification, we have made the strategic decision to close our three Atmos stores in North America and our Atmos U.S. website,” said Atmos SVP and GM Patrick Walsh in a statement. “We are confident that this is the right move for Atmos and will help us continue to work in service of bringing sneaker and street culture to our customers in Asia.”

Well, we’ll have to wait and see if their plan to focus on the overseas markets payoff as Atmos has been struggling to keep up with competitors in the states.

In March, Mary Dillon — who was announced as the next CEO of Foot Locker Inc. in August 2022 — offered insights into the company’s plan to reach $9.5 billion in sales by 2026, which included a strategy with four key pillars. One pillar was to focus on optimizing its fleet and unique store banners. The retailer said Atmos would serve as a ground for innovation while being rooted in Japanese culture.

In August, Foot Locker Inc. announced a sales decline of 9.9 percent and a loss of $5 million for the second quarter. (At Atmos, comp sales fell 10 percent in the quarter.)

At the end of the day it’s all about the bottom line and unfortunately for Atmos, they just weren’t meeting the standards to keep their doors open in America.

What do y’all think of Atmos going out of business in the US? Will y’all miss it or nah? Let us know in the comments section below.

Darius Rucker Says Ed Sheeran Helped Write a Song About an Ex-Girlfriend He Hadn’t See in Decades

First loves are always the strongest, and Darius Rucker knows the feeling first hand. The country star spoke with People about the backstory of his song “Sara” — in which he sings fondly of his fifth-grade girlfriend — and how pal Ed Sheeran helped him write the song that is set to appear on Rucker’s forthcoming album, Carolyn’s Boy.

Rucker and Sheeran first crossed paths while the pop star was opening for Taylor Swift during the Red Tour in 2013. “We met then, and I just wanted to write with him. I always wanted to write with him, and finally got to do it,” Rucker explained to the magazine. “I remember writing the first song and he asked me who my first love was, and I said it was my fifth-grade girlfriend. We just started talking about it, and in between every song he’d ask me something, and we’d talk about it, and then when I thought we were done he was like, ‘I’ve got one more idea, man.’”

He continued, “Writing that song was so fun because Ed is such an amazing songwriter, but to write a song that’s literally about your fifth-grade girlfriend who you haven’t seen in 40 years, it was an experience,” he says. “It was something that I never thought about writing, and when we did, I was so happy we did because I loved the song, and the song was true.”

The former Hootie & The Blowfish lead singer is happily married to his wife of 23 years, Beth Leonard, and said that he has “no idea” what his fifth-grade girlfriend, Sara, is doing now, but would “love to see her again” at some point.

“Sara” is on Rucker’s Carolyn’s Boy, which is set to release on Friday (Oct. 6).

Francia Raisa Says Selena Gomez Rift ‘Had Nothing to Do’ With Kidney Transplant: ‘We Trauma Bonded’

Francia Raisa was in attendance at the inaugural Rare Impact Fund benefit to support her longtime bestie Selena Gomez Wednesday (Oct. 4), proving once again that the two are on good terms these days.

It’s no big secret, though, that they once had a semi-public falling-out in the years after Raisa donated her kidney to Gomez — who needed a transplant in 2017 due to complications with Lupus — something the Secret Life of the American Teenager alum was candid about at Gomez’s event. “We trauma bonded, which is beautiful, but also it can get rocky and tricky,” she told Extra. “People grow, relationships change.”

“Obviously, I treat her like my little sister, she treats me like her older sister,” Raisa continued. “I don’t know any relationship that’s perfect … I am happy that we are here today, celebrating and supporting each other.”

“We had to almost go on our own journey and grow,” she added. “I am OK now, and just for the record, it had nothing to do with the kidney.”

Neither Gomez nor Raisa have shared what went down between them last year to cause the temporary rift, although fans picked up on the rough patch when Raisa unfollowed the “Single Soon” singer on Instagram. Raisa also left a comment some interpreted as shady on a post quoting Gomez, who’d said that Taylor Swift was her “only friend in the industry.” “Interesting,” the How I Met Your Father actress wrote at the time, to which Gomez responded, “Sorry I didn’t mention every person I know.”

The water was definitely under the bridge by July of this year, though, when Gomez publicly wished Raisa a happy birthday. “Happiest of birthdays to this special human being,” the Only Murders in the Building star wrote on Instagram alongside photos of the pair. “No matter where life takes us, I love you.”

Flash forward to the Rare Impact Fund benefit, and Raisa had nothing but kind words for the Rare Beauty founder. “She is bringing so much awareness to it, and we have both seen each other go through so much,” she told Extra. “I am on my own journey of finally expressing myself and what I have gone through with my mental health. I look to her to figure out how to even navigate all of this. Honestly, her sharing with the audience gave me the courage to start sharing with my audience.”

Record Label Market Share Q3 2023: Republic Stays Dominant While Interscope & Atlantic Surge

This year has been defined by consistency at the top of the charts, and one record label has led in current market share in each of the first three quarters: Republic Records, which has 12.28% of the market through Sept. 28, according to Luminate. That’s a negligible drop from last quarter’s 12.46% and more than four percentage points higher than the 8.77% share the label had for the same period last year.

Republic’s market share — much like the year overall — has been headlined by the massive Morgan Wallen album One Thing at a Time, which has racked up more than 4.5 million equivalent album units since its March debut, and Taylor Swift’s prolific release schedule, which not only includes her latest collection of new tracks, Midnights, but also the release of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version). Both are among the top 10 albums of the year so far. (Republic’s share also includes Island, Big Loud, Mercury, Cash Money and indie distributor Imperial.)

Wallen’s dominance is such that his label, Big Loud, would rank eighth among all labels on its own, with a 2.69% current market share if it were broken out from Republic, with both One Thing at a Time and his last release, Dangerous: The Double Album, both counting toward current share. (Current is defined as albums released within the past 18 months or that have remained in the top half of the Billboard 200.)

Coming in at a comfortable second place, with big third-quarter releases from Olivia Rodrigo and NewJeans, was Interscope Geffen A&M, which hit a high mark for the year so far with an 8.55% current share, a half-point increase over its midyear mark. That’s down from the 9.23% current share IGA posted at the third-quarter mark of 2022, but is a strong showing in a year in which Republic has vacuumed up so much market share. (IGA’s share also includes Verve Label Group.)

In third place, Atlantic — which encompasses 300 Elektra Entertainment — has also moved to a high mark for the year, with a 7.39% share, up from 7.34% at midyear. The music group’s performance was boosted by releases by Gunna, Lil Uzi Vert and, most significantly, the Barbie soundtrack, which is among the top five albums of the third quarter with over 650,000 equivalent album units.

However, factoring in back catalog to look at overall market share shakes up the top two. Interscope takes the top spot with 9.57%, besting Republic’s 9.49% by a shade over 500,000 units through the first three quarters, with Atlantic in third at 8.31%. That’s due to the deeper catalog of IGA and Atlantic: They are Nos. 1 and 2 in catalog-only share, with 9.91% and 8.62%, respectively. Republic finished third at 8.54%. Coming into the final quarter of the year, that’s a race to watch.

Capitol, which includes Motown/Quality Control, Blue Note, Astralwerks, Capitol Christian and indie distributor Virgin Music, remained steady in fourth place at 6.01% (from 6.0% at midyear) through three quarters. (Although HYBE acquired Quality Control earlier this year, Universal Music Group [UMG] continued to distribute the label.)

In fifth, Warner Records has made large gains throughout the year, largely due to the successes within Warner Nashville. (Its market share also includes catalog label Rhino, as well as Warner Music Latina.) Zach Bryan’s self-titled album has been a standout success in the quarter, while Bailey Zimmerman’s Religiously. The Album continues to perform well. Notably, both Capitol and Warner made big leaps in current market share year over year: Capitol jumped from sixth place to fourth, growing from 4.50% in 2022 to 6.01% in 2023; Warner grew from 4.77% in 2022 to 5.89% in 2023.

Slipping down the rankings year over year was Columbia, which dropped in current share from fourth through three quarters in 2022 (6.93%) to sixth in 2023 (4.93%). Columbia scored big this year with Miley CyrusEndless Summer Vacation, though 2022’s slate with releases from Harry Styles, Beyoncé and Adele represents a tough act to follow. RCA, in seventh, remains on a hot streak led by the huge success of SZA’s SOS — still the No. 2 album of the year — with the label coming in at a 4.64% share, up from 4.47% this time last year.

Epic has roared back after a relatively quiet 2023 on the strength of Travis Scott’s mammoth Utopia, which boosted the label from 1.82% in current share at midyear to 2.39% at the three-quarters mark — its highest quarterly showing for the year. Sony Nashville (eighth, 2.50%) and Sony Latin (10th, 1.96%) round out the top 10, with each growing more than half a percentage point year over year.

Among the label groups, both UMG (up from 32.54% to 34.61%) and Sony Music Entertainment (up from 27.09% to 27.50%) made big year-over-year strides, while Warner Music Group (down from 18.64% to 17.46%) and, collectively, independent labels (down from 21.73% to 20.43%) lost share compared with the same period in 2022.
