Taylor Swift at ‘Eras’ Film Premiere: Tour ‘The Most Electric Experience of My Life’

Taylor Swift is energized and loving life right now, when, to be fair, others in her position would be on the lookout for an extended beach getaway.

Swift’s ongoing The Eras Tour has completed its first lap of North American stadiums, and will return to the road from next month, beginning with a visit to Brazil followed by a full international schedule in 2024.

Not one to waste a moment of precious time, the pop superstar has moved forward The Eras Tour Concert Film, and was on hand for the world premiere at The Grove in Los Angeles on Wednesday (Oct. 11), where she delivered a three-minute speech and gave shoutouts to her band, dancers, and, of course, Swifties.

“I’ve always had fun doing this. I can’t believe I get to do music as a career. That’s crazy,” she said at the top. “I’ve always had so much fun doing it. I’ve never had this much fun in my life as I have had on The Eras Tour. It is far and away just the most electric experience of my life.”

Guests in the room included celebrities Rachel Zegler, Maren Morris, Simu Liu, Julia Garner and Adam Sandler, according to The Hollywood Reporter, as well as Swift’s mother Andrea.

Every person in the theater “has been hand selected and handpicked and invited to this night because you’ve shown some type of extra support for this tour,” she explained, “and I appreciate that more than you could possibly know.”

And what type of characters pique TayTay’s interest? “I’m always looking out for people with elevated levels of passion, incredible senses of humor on the internet, attention to detail. These things are very important to me.”

The Eras Tour movie rolls out Thursday, and is already a hit. According to a press release from AMC Theatres, her film has broken all existing records for single-day advance ticket sales revenue in the chain’s 103-year history with $26 million in the first 24 hours of on-sale.

The tour itself has been a box office juggernaut. Billboard’s North American projection nearly doubled earlier expectations at $591 million, just one piece of a 146-date mega-tour spanning five continents.

“We did this show rain or shine, in sickness and in health, no matter what was going on in our lives,” she told guest at the L.A.  premiere, “and we did it with a grin on our face because what greeted us on the other side.”

Pickle Unmasked on ‘The Masked Singer’

A week after one of U.S. TV’s “supervillains” was unmasked on The Masked Singer, viewers got another surprise Wednesday night (Oct. 11) when Pickle removed his giant prop head.

The theme of the night was the 2000s, and to drive the point home, *NSYNC’s Lance Bass and The Office actor Kate Flannery were among the special guests.

Wildcard Pickle got the show started off with a rendition of Weezer’s “Beverly Hills”, followed by Gazelle with a cover of Britney Spears’ “Lucky,” and S’more’s rendition of Plain White T’s’ “Hey There Delilah.”

Pickle and S’more bottomed out with lowest vote count, which meant a head-to-head on Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Goin Down.”

The green guy got himself into a pickle; yes, Pickle was sent packing.

But first, the big reveal. Under the mildly terrifying Pickle helmet was Michael Rapaport, the New York City-based actor, funnyman and self-styled disruptor, who, on multiple occasions, has used his social channels to unload on Fox, the network behind The Masked Singer.

Rapaport, as he does, delivered one of his signature rants, with shoutouts for each of the panelists, “Oh no. I didn’t just do great, I did fantastic. I was unbelievable,” he remarked. “The crowd went crazy.”

Changing tone, the True Romance star added, “In all seriousness I had a great time, I love this show, I love (host Nick Cannon), I love all these guys. The crowd was great, I hope they’re feeding you.”

When the deed was done, Rapaport posted a clip from the green room and backstage, with the caption: “The People’s Pickle. Big dill energy to the entire world and beyond. Smile for a moment if you can.”

Hosted by Cannon, the latest season includes a 16-strong fleet of contestants disguised in extravagant costumes including a Husky, Royal Hen, Tiki, Hawk, Hibiscus and Anteater.

Rapaport as Pickle joins Tom Sandoval as Diver, Anthony Anderson as Rubber Ducky and Demi Lovato as Anonymouse as season 10’s unmasked celebrities.

Nicole Scherzinger, Robin Thicke, Jeong and Jenny McCarthy return as judges for the latest season, which airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on Fox.

Who Is Eligible for Best New Artist at the 2024 Grammys & Who Isn’t?

Gracie Abrams, Ice Spice, Coco Jones, Jelly Roll, Noah Kahan, Peso Pluma, the War and Treaty and Lainey Wilson are among 405 artists who are vying for best new artist nominations at the 66th annual Grammy Awards.

While the aforementioned artists appear to be front-runners to fill the eight available slots, or at least among the front-runners, Grammy voters have a way of surprising us. Last year, not that many thought that Samara Joy would be nominated. She was not only nominated – she won. And this year’s eligibility list contains the names of 397 other artists, many highly credible, who are also hoping to make the final list.

As expected, Zach Bryan, who received a Grammy nomination (best country solo performance for “Something in the Orange”) last year was ruled ineligible. So was boygenius, which includes Phoebe Bridgers, who has received four previous nominations. A previous nomination is an automatic disqualifier in this category (assuming the artist had released enough tracks to be eligible in a previous year).

But for the most part, the Academy tries to err on the side of inclusiveness in this category. In the past, Whitney Houston, Richard Marx, Lady Gaga and many more potential best new artist nominees and even winners were ruled ineligible based on what were sometimes nitpicky technicalities. The Academy now looks for ways to include artists, not rule them out.

Indeed, several of the artists who were ruled eligible this year have been around awhile. Jelly Roll has been putting out albums, without much notice until recently, since 2011.

Other best new artist contenders who aren’t exactly new include Ava Max, whose hits, dating back nearly five years, include “Sweet but Psycho” and “Kings and Queens”; Cody Johnson, who was nominated for a CMA award for new artist of the year in both 2019 and 2022; and Coi Leray, who was nominated for a BET Award for best new artist in 2021.

Several more of this year’s Grammy best new artist hopefuls have been nominated for new artist of the year at the CMA Awards, including Wilson, who won in that category in 2022, and Jelly Roll, who is the front-runner to win there on Nov. 8. Others include HARDY, Parker McCollum, Megan Moroney and Hailey Whitters.

Several other Grammy contenders have been nominated for best new artist at the BET Awards. Jones won that award this year. FLO, Ice Spice and Lola Brooke were also nominated.

Peso Pluma is vying to become the third Latin artist in the past five years to receive a best new artist nomination. He would follow Rosalía and Anitta. Pluma wasn’t eligible for best new artist at the Latin Grammys and was passed over for nominations in the categories in which he was eligible. A nomination here would be a make-good for an artist who was widely seen as snubbed.

Aespa, Fifty Fifty, Seventeen and Stray Kids are among the K-pop acts that are hoping to make history as the first K-pop act to land a best new artist nomination.

Here are more noteworthy artists, not already named, who are fighting for one of the eight nomination slots: Madison Beer, Sabrina Carpenter, Gus Dapperton, Ezra Collective, Fred Again…, Fridayy, JVKE, David Kushner, Laufey, The Linda Lindas, Lizzy McAlpine, Tate McRae, Mitski, NLE Choppa, Joy Oladokun, Keke Palmer, Pink Pantheress, Raye, Rema, Stephen Sanchez, Lauren Spencer Smith, Toosii, Yves Tumor, Morgan Wade and Bailey Zimmerman.

As noted, 405 artists are entered, so this is just a sampling. We could be in store for a surprise.

The number of best new artist nominees at the Grammys jumped from five to eight in 2018, and from eight to 10 in 2021. This year it will (mercifully) drop back down to a more reasonable eight.

The winners in the past five years, since the number of number of nominees expanded, were Dua Lipa (2018), Billie Eilish (2019), Megan Thee Stallion (2020), Olivia Rodrigo (2021) and Joy (2022). As you can see, Grammy voters tend to favor female artists in this category. The 2017 winner (the last year there were just five nominees), was also a woman (Alessia Cara).

Last year’s nine other nominees — besides Joy – were: Anitta, Omar Apollo, DOMI & JD Beck, Muni Long, Latto, Maneskin, Tobe Nwigwe, Molly Tuttle and Wet Leg.

Best new artist is the only category in what has long been called the Big Four (along with album, record and song of the year) to see an increase in the number of entries from last year. There are 405 entries this year, up from 368 last year. The number of contenders in this category peaked in 2013 at 670.

First-round voting for the 66th annual Grammy Awards opened on Wednesday (Oct. 11) and closes Oct. 20. Nominees will be announced on Nov. 10 (five days earlier than last year). The final-round voting window extends from Dec. 14 through Jan. 4, 2023 (same as last year). Winners will be announced on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024, at Crypto.com Arena (formerly known as Staples Center) in Los Angeles.

Tyga and YG continue to be one of the most baffling pairings in a while and though they come off as an Odd Couple of sorts in the rap game, the surprising duo do like making videos together.

This time around the LA G and Kylie Jenner’s ex (no shots, just facts) link up for their black-and-white visuals to “Park 10” which finds the two kicking it on a couch and rocking to the beat while a few thick young women make them feel comfortable and show them just how dangerous their curvy roads can be. Tyga really fumbled a whole franchise in Kylie. Just sayin.’

Back in New York, Maino keeps on reminding everyone that there ain’t no place like home and for his clip to “For My City” the Brooklynite rolls through the streets of New York with a gang of rough riding bikers before linking up with the likes of Fabolous and Jim Jones. We miss their bromance gym videos.

Check out the rest of today’s drops including work from Royal Flush, Sean Price and Cassidy, Big Quis, and more.

Troye Sivan Accidentally Followed Harry Styles to the Bathroom When They First Met

Everyone has memories that they look back on and cringe — but not everyone’s story involves Harry Styles.

Troye Sivan opened up about the hilarious moment he met the “As It Was” singer during an afterparty for the 2023 Grammy Awards, where Styles’ Harry’s House took home the award for album of the year. “We meet for the first time and I feel like I know him, because it’s Harry Styles,” Sivan said in an interview with KissFM UK this week. “So, I’m super, super chill. He walks up to a conversation that I was already having, and I just said to the other people, ‘Oh, I’m just going to go make a wee.’ Then, he arrives and I’m speaking to him, like, ‘Oh my God, congrats on the Grammy.’ Then he’s like, ‘I’m just going to go to the bathroom.’ And I’m like, ‘Oh, you’re going to the bathroom? I’m also going to the bathroom. Let’s go!’”

He continued, “As we were walking to the bathroom, I kind of just realized that I literally just met this man and I’ve already suggested we go to the loo together. I wonder how he feels about this. Was that just the weirdest, worst thing I could have possibly said in that moment. Then, he got kind of stopped along the way by someone and I just beelined for the bathroom embarrassed, and I thought about it for the rest of the night.”

The RIAA Wants AI Voice Cloning Sites Added to the Government’s Piracy Watchlist

The RIAA has asked to have AI voice cloning added to the government’s piracy watch list, officially known as the Review of Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy.

The RIAA typically writes in each year, requesting forms of piracy like torrenting, stream ripping, cyber lockers and free music downloading to be included in the final list. All of these categories of piracy are still present in the RIAA’s letter to the U.S. Trade Representative this year, but this is the first time the trade organization, which represents the interest of record labels, has added a form of generative AI to their recommendations.

The RIAA noted that it believes AI voice cloning, also referred to as ‘AI voice synthesis’ or ‘AI voice filters,’ infringes on their members’ copyrights and the artists’ rights to their voices and calls out one U.S.-based AI voice cloning site, Voicify.AI as one that should specifically face scrutiny.

According to the letter, Voicify.AI’s service includes voice models that emulate sound recording artists like Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Elvis Presley, Bruno Mars, Eminem, Harry Styles, Adele, Ed Sheeran, and others, as well as political figures including Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and Barak Obama.

The RIAA claims that this type of service infringes on copyrights because it “stream-rips the YouTube video selected by the user, copies the acapella from the track, modifies the acapella using the AI vocal model, and then provides the user unauthorized copies of the modified acapella stem, the underlying instrumental bed, and the modified remixed recording.” Essentially, some of these AI voice cloning sites train its models on stolen copyrights.

It additionally claims that there is a violation pf the artists’ right of publicity, the right that protects public figures from having their name, likeness, and voice commercially exploited without their permission. This is a more tenuous right, given it is only a state-level protection and its strength varies by state. It also becomes more limited after a public figure’s death. However, this is possibly the most common legal argument against AI voice cloning technology in the music business.

This form of artificial intelligence first became widely recognized last spring, when an anonymous TikTok user named Ghostwriter used AI to mimic the voices of Drake and The Weeknd in his song “Heart On My Sleeve” with shocking precision. The song was briefly available on streaming services, like YouTube, but was taken down after a stern letter from the artists’ label, Universal Music Group. However, the song was ultimately removed from official services due to a copyright infringement in the track, not because of a right of publicity claim.

A few months later, Billboard reported that streamers were in talks with the three major label groups about allowing them to file take down requests for right of publicity violations — something which previously was only allowed in cases of copyright infringement as dictated in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Unlike the DMCA, the newly discussed arrangement regarding right of publicity issues would be a voluntary one. In July, UMG’s general counsel and executive vp of business and legal affairs, Jeffery Harleston, spoke as a witness in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on AI and copyright and asked for a new “federal right of publicity” to be made into law to protect artists’ voices.

An additional challenge in regulating this area is that many AI models available on the internet for global users are not based in the U.S., meaning the U.S. government has little recourse to stop their alleged piracy, even if alerted by trade organizations like the RIAA. Certain countries are known to be more relaxed on AI regulation — like China, Israel, South Korea, Japan, and Singapore — which has created safe havens for AI companies to grow abroad.

The U.S. Trade Representative still must review this letter from the RIAA as well as other recommendations from other industry groups and determine whether or not they believe AI voice cloning should be included on the watchlist. The office will likely issue their final review at the start of next year.

Music-Focused Financial Services Startup HIFI Acquired by Block

HIFI, a financial services startup catering to the music business, has been acquired by Block, the payments technology company launched by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. A person with knowledge of the transaction tells Billboard the deal closed on Tuesday (Oct. 10).

Launched in 2020, HIFI allows clients to track their royalty income from a variety of sources such as publishers, distributors and performance rights organizations. “We initially built the solution to service indie artists, and indie artists’ managers and their teams,” CEO Damian Manning told Billboard in 2021. “What we’ve discovered is the artists in the major label system, the managers in the major label system, major publishing system, had the same set of challenges they’re looking for solutions for.”

Block, best known for payments and e-commerce software maker Square and Cash App, now has a small portfolio of music companies: It acquired music streaming service Tidal in 2021 for $302 million from Jay-Z and a consortium of artists. Block also owns two companies in the cryptocurrency space: Spiral builds open-source projects that utilize Bitcoin and TBD offers an open source platform for developers to decentralized products and services. Block has revenue of $10.5 billion in the first half of 2023, according to its latest 10-Q report.

Joining Block allows HIFI “to further our shared purpose of economic empowerment with the financial technologies and services we have built to help artists thrive,” reads an undated statement at HIFI’s website. “Block has long worked to create economic access across its ecosystems, and through its TIDAL business, is focused on serving artists at every stage in their career.

Among HIFI’s long list of financial backers were Diplo, Quincy Jones, 3LAU, G-Easy, Red Light Management’s Coran Capshaw, Capital Music Group’s Michelle Jubelirer, Mick Management’s Michael McDonald and Jonathan Eshak, 88rising’s Jason Ve and 300’s Rob Stevenson.
