Global Value of Music Copyright Climbed to $41.5B in 2022

A rebound in performing rights and heightened demand for physical product helped the value of global music copyright reach $41.5 billion in 2022, surpassing the $40 billion mark for the first time, according to a report released Monday (Nov. 6)

While record labels commanded a majority of the global market, the $5 billion annual increase was “evenly shared” between recorded music and music publishing, noted the report’s author, Will Page. The 2022 tally represented a 16% increase at constant currency — and currency fluctuations played a major role. Page restated the value of global music copyright in 2021 to $36.9 billion from $39.6 billion due to updated foreign exchange rates. Almost $2 billion of the nearly $3 billion restatement came from IFPI’s global recorded music revenues, while about $1 billion of the adjustment came from music publishing.

Record labels accounted for $26 billion of the $41.5 billion sum, a 62.7% share that was lower than both 2021 (64.6%) and 2020 (63.5%). Since 2020, a slowdown in labels’ digital revenue has been offset by more than $1 billion in growth from physical formats from “accelerating demand for CDs in Asia” and an “insatiable need” for vinyl records in Europe and the United States: “And this isn’t going to slow down,” predicts Page.

Music publishers increased their share of the global total to 37.3%. Part of the reason publishers outperformed labels could be from what Page calls a “lag effect,” where labels tend to license to new streaming platforms before publishers. Another potential reason for publishers’ improvement is early accruals from the royalty increase in the United States from the Copyright Royalty Board, “a decision that will fully crystalize when the 2023 figures are calculated,” writes Page.

Publishers’ direct revenue rose from $3.7 billion to $4.1 billion but accounted for a smaller 9.9% share of total revenue, down from 10.2% in 2021. Songwriter CMOs rebounded with a 27.5% share of total revenue worth $11.4 billion, after taking a 25.3% share worth $9.2 billion in 2021 and a 27.2% share worth $8.5 billion in 2020. Page attributes CMOs’ improvement to music’s return to the live space after the pandemic, which drives gains in public performance royalties. Also, “inflation is embedded into blanket licenses,” wrote Page, meaning higher prices increase collections when the royalties are calculated as a percentage of revenue. Finally, as CISAC’s Gadi Oron has noted, CMOs have improved collections through a combination of content identification and improved licensing terms.

There’s a chance Page’s $41.5 billion figure is low. The estimate incorporates global recording revenue tallied by the trade group IFPI. But as Page notes in his report, MIDiA Research “has arguably done more research” on segments undercounted by IFPI’s various members, including the do-it-yourself artists who account for 10% of global streams, indie labels and the South Korean market. MIDiA Research put the value of global recorded music in 2022 at $18.9 billion, about 8% greater than the IFPI’s figure of $17.5 billion.

If MIDiA’s methodology is correct, says Page, the value of global copyright is closer to $45 billion than $40 billion and could be $50 billion sooner than people expect. When the music business hits that threshold, it will have doubled since Page’s 2014 report put the global value of music copyright at $25 billion

Dua Lipa is done playing “Houdini” and has resurfaced on our feeds teasing new music. The Barbie movie actress announced a fresh single titled “Houdini,” as well as surprise launch events in the U.K., Japan and the U.S. to celebrate its drop on Nov. 9, according to her latest Instagram post.

What caught our eye, though, was the see-through top she wore in her first announcement on Instagram. From first glance, it appears as though she’s wearing a preppy Peter Pan-collared black sheer top, but it’s actually a short-sleeve bodysuit by Maison Margiela — and it’s still in stock!

“I’m putting on three surprise launch events for Houdini in London, Los Angeles and Tokyo. The first one’s going to be in my hometown, London, this Thursday!!!” the caption says.

The bodysuit marks a step away from Lipa’s Y2K style, which is normally her go-to aesthetic. Instead, the ruffle hem sleeves and micro pleated bodice show off a more elevated yet romantic look that’s versatile enough to be paired with pleated skirts and a teddy coat.

Katy Perry & Orlando Bloom’s Daughter Daisy Dove Makes Public Debut at Vegas Residency Finale

Sure, Prince Harry and Céline Dion both showed up to the final performance of Katy Perry‘s Play Las Vegas residency, but the most adorable high-profile appearance had to be from Perry and Orlando Bloom‘s daughter Daisy Dove.

The 3-year-old made her public debut at her mom’s grand finale — and got to hear how she inspired the multimillion-dollar-grossing show — on Sunday night. Fan-captured footage from the elaborate performance shows the “Roar” singer shouting out her baby girl. “Daisy! I love you so much,” Perry exclaimed. “You’re my best friend. I’m so glad you’re here.”

Daisy — who sported a precious red-and-white polka-dot dress and sat alongside her father — was born three years ago, just two days before the release of Perry’s fifth album Smile. The album peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and housed the Billboard Hot 100 top 20 hit “Never Really Over.”

The “Witness” singer’s set featured a plethora of heartwarming moments for her family. During a spirited rendition of “Hot N Cold,” Perry quipped, “Mommy was a little bit wild back then!” The lighthearted vibes continued as Bloom and his daughter showed off their moves as Perry performed “Chained to the Rhythm.”

In accordance with this being the final Play show, Perry delivered an emotional speech detailing the show’s inspiration. “I created this show after the birth of my daughter, Daisy Dove,” she said while fighting tears. “When I met her, it was like all the love I was ever searching for finally showed up. She made me whole and she healed me, and she showed me how to play again. So this show is for everyone’s inner-child and for the hope that maybe if we could all see life through the eyes of a child, we would be free. ‘Cause never forget love is and will always be the key.”

Perry has sent three albums to the top of the Billboard 200 and earned nine chart-toppers on the Hot 100, including “Teenage Dream,” “Dark Horse” (with Juicy J) and “Firework.”

Check out some fan-captured footage of the final Play show:

The spice set comes with tips on how to use the spices in food and drink recipes.

According to data gathered by HelloFresh and Tinder, 81 percent of those surveyed feel that cooking a meal for their partner means the relationship is moving from casual to committed — and that usually happens around the fifth date. Seventy percent of survey respondents believe that cooking with their partner is more intimate than fooling around, 56 percent of those surveyed feel pressure to go all out on dinner dates and nearly a third of respondents feel that cooking together can help lead to long-lasting relationships.

Cooking is also one of the top 20 interests Tinder users add to their profiles and the “Date Night Delights” menu can take some of the pressure off deciding what to cook for dinner dates.

“We were inspired to learn that four out of five Americans agree that a relationship is becoming serious when you start cooking for your partner,” Kirsten Walpert, VP of Brand and Creative, HelloFresh US, said in a press release sent to Billboard. “With food playing such a central role in how couples connect and create memorable moments, we’re excited to be partnering with Tinder to introduce Forking Season and give consumers everything they need to prepare easy and delicious meals at home.”

“When date nights out lead to date nights in, things are getting serious. We know Tinder users are looking for a match to get cozy with this Cuffing Season, from the 96% increase in users talking about ‘Cuffing Season’ in their profile bios. We’ve also found that today’s singles are looking for new date ideas that are more interactive than sitting across from each other in a restaurant,” said Stephanie Danzi, Senior Vice President of Global Marketing at Tinder. “We love this partnership with HelloFresh because these ‘Date Night Delights’ create more opportunities for new couples to get to know each other and unlock a new phase of connection.”

The Beatles’ ‘Now and Then’ Debuts at No. 1 on Digital Song Sales Chart

After less than one day of availability, The Beatles’ “Now and Then” bounds in at No. 1 on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart dated Nov. 11.

In the Oct. 27-Nov. 2 tracking week, “Now and Then” – with all of its sales in that span logged Nov. 2, after it premiered at 10 a.m. ET – sold 16,000 downloads in the U.S., according to Luminate.

The song also starts at No. 1 on Rock Digital Song Sales, and is The Beatles’ first leader on each retail ranking. (The band’s digital catalog was first made available in the iTunes Store in November 2010.)

As previously reported, “Now and Then” concurrently opens at No. 37 on Rock & Alternative Airplay with 1.1 million audience impressions on reporting rock radio stations in its first day. Among all formats, the song drew 2.6 million in audience Nov. 2.

Elsewhere, “Now and Then” starts at Nos. 7 and 11 on the multi-metric Hot Rock Songs and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs charts, respectively, with its sales and airplay also augmented by 2.3 million official U.S. streams Nov. 2.

The song starts at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100’s Bubbling Under chart, which ranks the top 25 titles that have not yet hit the Hot 100.

Plus, the track opens at No. 152 on the Nov. 11-dated Billboard Global 200, with 6.4 million streams and 30,000 sold worldwide, again, all tallied Nov. 2.

“Now and Then” is billed as the final Beatles song, first recorded as a demo in 1977 by John Lennon and initially meant for the band’s The Beatles’ three-edition Anthology series in the mid-‘90s before being shelved by the surviving members of the band. It was completed and released this year after new technology helped extract Lennon’s vocals from the original demo while also using guitar recordings from George Harrison from the initial attempt to finish the song.

Notably, The Beatles released two new Anthology singles, each of which opened at No. 5 on the then-active Hot Singles Sales chart, which tracked physical singles before downloads became songs’ main sales currency in the 2000s. “Free as a Bird” began with 59,000 copies sold in its first week (Dec. 30, 1995) and “Real Love,” with 67,000 (March 23, 1996).

The first full week of activity, including physical copies, for “Now and Then” – whose official video premiered Nov. 3 at 9 a.m. ET – will be reflected on Billboard’s Nov. 18-dated charts, including the streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Hot 100 (encompassing activity tracked Nov. 3-9).

All Billboard charts dated Nov. 11 will update on Billboard.com on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Sheryl Crow Gave Olivia Rodrigo This Simple But Important Piece of Life Advice

Sheryl Crow is all about supporting young artists, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee opened up about working with 20-year-old Olivia Rodrigo, who performed with Crow during the ceremony and participated in presenting her with the honor.

“It’s really cool,” Crow told ET of working with Rodrigo. “I mean, you know, I got to sort of lift her up a little bit, because she’s got a new record [out]… I know how hard the second record is, the sophomore. You’re competing with the success of your first record, and she nailed it.”

She also revealed the piece of advice she gave the “Vampire” singer. “I said, you know, ‘If you can, just write down one sentence every day, of what happened during that day, because you will someday look back [at] this, and try to remember all the things.’”

“The other thing [I told her] is to just stay in the work and stay out of the chatter,” she continued. “That’s a major thing.”

After performing “If It Makes You Happy” with Crow at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, Rodrigo appeared in a video montage about Crow’s career that featured Stevie Nicks and Maren Morris. In the clip, the “Get Him Back!” singer praised Crow’s lyricism, and especially the line “scrape the mold off the bread and serve you French toast again” from “If It Makes You Happy.”

“Nobody could say that besides Sheryl. She says things I would have never thought of in the most beautiful way,” Rodrigo said. The love is mutual, with Crow naming Rodrigo “the real deal” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon the night before.

After her onstage moment with Crow, Rodrigo described the experience in a statement to Billboard. “It was an honor to join Sheryl on stage and I am so excited for her to be inducted into the RRHOF! I am a massive fan of hers and her incredible songwriting. She’s equally as kind as she is talented and I feel so lucky that I was able to be part of celebrating such a legend.”

Larsa Pippen Reacts To Cardi B Clowning Her About Having Sex “Four Times A Night” With Ex-Husband Scottie Pippen

HipHopWired Featured Video

BravoCon 2023

Larsa Pippen is clapping back at Cardi B after the Hip-Hop star had thoughts about her former sex life with her ex-husband Scottie Pippen.

After the 49-year-old Real Housewives of Miami reality star revealed on Watch What Happens Live that she and her ex-husband of 20 years, Pro Basketball Hall of Famer and NBA champion Scottie Pippen used to have sex “like four times a night,” Cardi B touched on Pippen’s bedroom activities during a live stream.

The “Bongos” crafter was asked about women who have sex multiple times a day. Bardi allegedly called out the reality star and current object of affection of Marcus Jordan, saying she was being dishonest and that she should “stitch up her p***y and go away,” People reports.

At 2023 BravoCon in Las Vegas on Saturday, November, during a RHOM panel, Pippen used the moment to respond to Cardi B.

Per HuffPost:

“I don’t know how can someone else comment on how many times I have sex, you guys?” she said, speaking to the audience. “She wasn’t in bed with us, so I don’t know. I kind of feel like that was comical.”

Larsa Pippen’s claims about her former sex life were also questioned by one of her castmates, Alexia Echevarria, who was on the panel.

She slammed Echevarria for not trusting her, saying, “And like, Alexia, how could you say you didn’t believe me?”

“I just feel like if you were having sex with Scottie four times a day, you’d still be married,” Echevarria said.

Larsa Pippen’s Love Life Broken Down

Larsa and Scottie married in 1997, then separated in 2016, but reconciled before splitting again in November 2018 after Larsa filed for divorce. The former couple share four children.

She has been the topic of social media after confirming her relationship with Marcus Jordan, who is 16 years younger than her. What makes this relationship even more scandalous is that Marcus is the son of Scottie Pippen’s former teammate, Michael Jordan.

Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan are not on the best of terms after Pippen called out MJ in his 2021 memoir “Unguarded” claiming that Jordan’s Netflix doc, The Last Dance, only glorified Jordan “while not giving nearly enough praise to me and my proud teammate.”

What a mess.

Stacey Abrams Calls Out Misogynoir In MSNBC Interview

HipHopWired Featured Video

TIME Honoring The March: An Impact Family Dinner

Source: Paras Griffin / Getty

Stacey Abrams spoke out about the disdain for Black women in politics in an interview on MSNBC, citing the criticism Vice President Kamala Harris continues to receive.

The Democratic gubernatorial candidate for Georgia sat down for an interview on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki on Sunday (November 5) and discussed the ongoing trials in Fulton County of former president Donald Trump and his alleged co-conspirators over interference related to the 2020 presidential election. Before ending the interview, Psaki brought up Vice President Kamala Harris.

“I wanted to ask you about the vice president,” Psaki began. “She’s been subjected to a huge amount of scrutiny her entire time in office. I can think of a lot of reasons why, but I wanted to ask you – as a prominent woman of color who’s run for office, do you think she would be receiving these same critiques if she was a white man?” Abrams wasted little time in responding.

“No.”

Abrams continued: “We will always question the person behind the person, but we cannot ignore the misogyny and racism remain very prevalent in our politics. For those behaviors that don’t rise to either misogyny or racism, there’s also just a difference. Our expectations are set for the traditional white male vice president. It’s what it’s always been. We are not always great with new. But more importantly, I know if you filter through the critiques, if you think about how she is castigated, it is inextricably linked to race and gender. I applaud the poise with which she has responded.”

Currently, poll numbers for Vice President Harris have been meager with a 37 percent approval rating with a 52 percent disapproval rating as reported by FiveThirtyEight. This comes as Harris has been steadily working to protect voting rights as well as to fight against the rollback of abortion rights in the country. In addition, she has been outspoken in fighting for more federal resources to be distributed to Black businesses and HBCUs.

Abrams also spoke at length about the ongoing conflict in Gaza between Israel and the militant Hamas organization, and also about the work she’s doing with her Fair Fight organization in Georgia. The group is currently embroiled in a lawsuit against a Texas-based group, True The Vote, alleging it attempted to intimidate 340,000 Georgia voters.
