Hip-Hop Wired Presents: CRT FRSH [Certified Fresh] Playlist 11.3.23

HipHopWired Featured Video

Distracted african man listening to music with headphones

What up, Hip-Hop Wired Nation? We’re back with CRT FRSH AKA Certified Fresh! Part of our duty as a publication and crew is to school the masses on who is doing what musically and there’s no better way to do that beyond our CRT FRSH (Certified Fresh) bi-weekly playlist.

Disclaimer:

The CRT FRSH playlist is a labor of love. We don’t take payments nor do we do favors. We only add joints to our playlist that fit the theme and vision we’re going for and don’t seek to waste the listener’s time. Further, we don’t stick to one lane of Hip-Hop. We believe that all aspects of the music should get some light, whether it’s young lions in the trenches or those hoping for that one shot to blow up to grizzled veterans puffing out their chests with lots more to say.

For a change of pace, I want to speak in my own voice and explain how I approach curating the CRT FRSH playlist. Most importantly, I don’t segregate my Hip-Hop. Every form of music from the main cultural tree deserves a listen and a look. When I’m putting the list together, I want to include all regions across the States and, when applicable, across the globe. I also want to entertain every fan of Hip-Hop, not just those who enjoy one segment of it. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s get to it. – D.L. Chandler

We want to apologize to the Hip-Hop Wired nation for the lack of updates to the playlist and we’re working hard behind the scenes to keep up the place you all have come to expect. Now, let’s get on with the show.

The playlist opens with Megan Thee Stallion’s latest single “Cobra,” a track that had the streets discussing the finer points of her former relationship with Pardison Fontaine. Wale, now signed with Def Jam, returns to the masses after laying low with “Max Julien,” proving just how potent a lyricist he truly is.

It seems hard to believe but J. Cole just earned his first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts as a feature on Drake’s “First Person Shooter” track from the For All The Dogs album which we’ve also featured.

We’ve got Lil Wayne showing up on two tracks in this playlist update, “Tity Boi” from Weezy F. Baby’s The Fix Before The VI project, and the New Orleans shows up as a feature on Benny The Butcher’s “Big Dog” single with production from The Alchemist.

For many, the combination of the core Griselda members rapping over Tay Keith doesn’t make sense on paper but “Kostas” from Westside Gunn’s excellent And Then You Pray For Me album proves that it works. Gunn’s cousin Benny The Butcher and brother Conway The Machine add their respective perspectives to great effect.

New York rapper and producer MIKE dropped his latest album Burning Desire, easily one of the best projects to release this year. The track “Mussel Beach,” features Washington, D.C. rapper El Cousteau and Central Florida’s Niontay, both of whom add exceptional verses over MIKE’s (as dj blackpower) production.

Rapsody, a sorely missed presence in the scene, is prepping her next full-length project and makes a hell of a statement with her new single “Asteroids” with production from Hit-Boy. If this is what listeners can come to expect from the North Carolina mastermind, the game isn’t ready.

If you’ve yet to hear of klwn cat, a prodigy on the boards not even old enough to buy a beer, please get hip. The Southern California producer’s latest single “FATE IS COMING” features another leader of the underground youth movement in Unruly and Chicago’s Willyynova.

Salute to all the artists who created the art that we curated for this CRT FRSH update such as Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Lady London, Jeremih, Veeze, Flo Milli, Young Scooter, Doja Cat, Sideshow, Earl Sweatshirt, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, Kingpen Slim, Symba, Lil Darius, Ken Carson, and more.

Ashley Gorley Wins ASCAP Country Music Songwriter of the Year for a Record 10th Time

Ashley Gorley was named ASCAP country music songwriter of the year at the 61st ASCAP Country Music Awards. The invitation-only event, which celebrated the songwriters and publishers of country music’s 50 most-performed ASCAP songs of the past year, was held at The Twelve Thirty Club in Nashville on Monday (Nov. 6).

This was the 10th time Gorley has been named ASCAP country music songwriter of the year, which extends his record.

Gorley, 46, had a hand in writing 10 of ASCAP’s most-performed country songs of the past year, five of which were recorded by Morgan Wallen: “You Proof” (which was named ASCAP country song of the year), “Last Night,” “Everything I Love,” “One Thing at a Time” and “Thinkin’ Bout Me.” Gorley’s other award-winners for the year were “Gold” (Dierks Bentley), “She Had Me at Heads Carolina” (Cole Swindell), “What He Didn’t Do” (Carly Pearce), “Girl in Mine” (Parmalee) and “You Didn’t” (Brett Young).

This is the third time that Gorley has co-written the ASCAP country song of the year. He accepted the honor for “You Proof” alongside winning publishers Round Hill Songs and Sony Music Publishing. The song debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the first song to top Billboard’s Country Airplay chart for 10 weeks.

Gorley has received five CMA nominations for song of the year and five Grammy nominations in songwriting categories — though he has yet to win at either awards show. He has received four Grammy nods for best country song and one for best rock song (for co-writing Weezer’s “All My Favorite Songs”).

Jordan Davis, 35, collected his first ASCAP country music songwriter/artist of the year honor. The MCA Nashville artist’s top 10 Hot Country Songs hits “Next Thing You Know” and “What My World Spins Around” were also honored as most-performed songs. “Next Thing You Know” is nominated for single, song and music video of the year at the 57th CMA Awards, which will be presented on Wednesday. Davis won the CMA Award for song of the year last year for “Buy Dirt,” which he co-wrote with his brother, Jacob Davis, Josh Jenkins and Matt Jenkins and recorded with Luke Bryan.

Sony Music Publishing was named ASCAP country music publisher of the year. The company represents 21 of this year’s most-performed songs including “Heart Like a Truck” (Lainey Wilson), “Heartfirst” (Kelsea Ballerini), “Need a Favor” (Jelly Roll), “Next Thing You Know” (Jordan Davis), “What He Didn’t Do” (Carly Pearce), “Gold” (Dierks Bentley), “Everyone She Knows” (Kenny Chesney), “5 Foot 9” (Tyler Hubbard), “No Body” (Blake Shelton) and “You, Me, and Whiskey” (Justin Moore and Priscilla Block).

ASCAP CEO Elizabeth Matthews, ASCAP chairman of the board and president Paul Williams and ASCAP vice president of Nashville membership Mike Sistad presented what ASCAP calls the “Of the Year” winners.

The Weeknd Postpones Australia & New Zealand Tour Dates ‘Due to Unforeseen Circumstances’

The Weeknd has postponed the Australia and New Zealand leg of his After Hours Til Dawn Tour two weeks before it was supposed to start.

According to the singer’s rep, fans received an email from the ticketing companies with this statement: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, we must reschedule the Australia/New Zealand tour. New dates will be announced next year and current tickets will be valid for the new shows. Refunds will be available for those unable to attend the new dates. Deeply disappointed but can’t wait to be there with you!”

Australian ticketing company Ticketek posted the message on The Weeknd’s tour page as well as a statement from Live Nation Australia & New Zealand: “We understand fans will be disappointed, and Live Nation is focused on working with The Weeknd to secure a new tour schedule. We will make a further announcement as soon as possible.”

The “Blinding Lights” singer was scheduled for an 11-date trek in Brisbane (two dates at Suncorp Stadium), Sydney (three dates at Accor Stadium), Melbourne (four dates at Marvel Stadium) and Auckland (two dates at Eden Park) starting Nov. 20 and ending Dec. 9, according to his website. The After Hours Til Dawn Tour celebrates his 2020 album After Hours and 2022 album Dawn FM, both of which led the ARIA Albums Chart (He has four total No. 1 albums in Australia, including 2015’s Beauty Behind The Madness and 2016’s Starboy.)

Mike Dean and Chxrry22, the latter of whom is signed to his label XO Records, were originally slated to open for The Weeknd. Dean and Kaytranada recently opened for his Latin American leg, which began on Sept. 26 at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, Mexico and wrapped on Oct. 25 at Estadio Akron in Zapopan, Mexico.

Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty to Donate to Gaza Relief Effort: ‘Palestinian Civilians Must Be Protected’

On Monday (Nov. 6), the Selena Gomez-fronted makeup brand Rare Beauty shared a post to its Instagram feed condemning the recent Israeli airstrikes in Gaza — which follow an Oct. 7 attack by Hamas at the Nova Music Festival that killed at least 260 people — and shared that it will be donating to Palestinian relief organizations in light of the conflict.

“We are devastated by the images and reports coming from the Middle East,” the post reads. “Thousands of innocent Palestinian civilians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes and millions of civilians have been displaced and left without access to food, water, medicine or basic necessities for survival. A large number of these victims are children. Palestinian civilians must be protected, period.”

In addition to denouncing all forms of antisemitism and Islamophobia, the post continued, “Rare Beauty will be making donations to the International Red Cross/ Red Crescent Societies – Magen David Adom and Palestinian Red Crescent Society – who are providing urgent care on the ground. We will also be donating to UNICEF to help get urgent medical relief and resources to the children of Gaza.”

The post concluded with mental health resources that readers could use should they or someone they know need them.

The Rare Beauty post arrives after Gomez issued a statement on Oct. 31 stating that she would take a social media break because of the “horror, hate, violence and terror that’s going on in the world” and that an Instagram post would not be enough to end the Israel-Hamas war.

“I’ve been taking a break from social media because my heart breaks to see all of the horror, hate, violence and terror that’s going on in the world,” she wrote via her Instagram Story. “People being tortured and killed or any act of hate towards any one group is horrific. We need to protect ALL people, especially children and stop the violence for good.”

The Only Murders in the Building star concluded her post, sharing, “I’m sorry if my words will never be enough for everyone or a hashtag. I just can’t stand by innocent people getting hurt. That’s what makes me sick. I wish I could change the world. But a post won’t. Love, Selena.”

Shortly after Gomez’s statement, she drew backlash online due to the resignation she expressed in her statement in light of being one of the most-followed individuals on Instagram (she currently sits at No. 3 with 430 million followers on the platform). The singer/actress followed up her post on Nov. 2 by explaining that she would be deleting Instagram and reiterating that she does “not support any of what’s going on.” Her account remains active as of press time.

Nearly Half of All Albums Sold in the U.S. Last Week Were Taylor Swift’s ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’

Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated Nov. 11), selling a whopping 1.359 million copies in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 2, according to Luminate. As previously reported, that marks the biggest sales week of 2023, the largest sales week of any album since 2015, and the sixth-biggest sales week for an album since Luminate began electronically tracking sales in 1991.

1989 (Taylor’s Version) is Swift’s 13th No. 1 on Top Album Sales.

The first-week sales of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) were so large, they accounted for 43.8% of all albums sold in the U.S. in the tracking week: 1.359 million of the total 3.102 million sold. Further, focusing just on the physical copies of the album Swift sold (CD, vinyl and cassettes), 1989 (Taylor’s Version) sold 1.261 million copies – representing 46.9% of all physical album sales last week (2.689 million physical albums were sold across all titles in the U.S.).

The sales of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) were enhanced by its availability in 15 collectible physical formats: five color vinyl variants, eight CD editions and two cassette editions. Of the five vinyl variants, Target carries a color variant that includes one bonus track (“Sweeter Than Fiction”). The album is also available to buy in two digital download editions: a standard 21-song version and a deluxe 22-song version (which adds a re-recorded version of the album’s “Bad Blood,” featuring Kendrick Lamar).

So far in 2023, Swift’s catalog of albums, across all of her titles, have sold 4.531 million copies – which accounts for 5.4% of all albums sold this year by all artists combined (83.758 million sold year to date). Swift is by far the year’s top-selling act by total album sales. Her collected albums have sold six times more than the year’s No. 2-selling act, Stray Kids, with 753,000 sold.

Elsewhere in the top 10 of the new Top Album Sales chart, the latest releases from SEVENTEEN, Grateful Dead and Duran Duran debut.

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. The new Nov. 11, 2023-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Nov. 7. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

At No. 2 on Top Album Sales, SEVENTEEN’s SEVENTEENTH Heaven: 11th Mini Album arrives. It’s the sixth top 10-charting effort for the Korean pop group. The set bows with 98,000 copies sold, effectively all from CD sales, bolstered by its availability across 16 collectible CD variants.

The Rolling Stones’ Hackney Diamonds falls 2-3 in its second week, with 33,000 sold (down 65%).

Grateful Dead’s latest archival live album release, Dave’s Picks, Volume 48: Pauley Pavilion, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA, 11/20/71, debuts at No. 4 with 19,000 sold. It’s the 38th top 10-charting set for the band since Top Album Sales launched in 1991.

TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s chart-topping The Name Chapter: Freefall dips 3-5 with 15,000 sold (down 48%).

Duran Duran’s new Danse Macabre debuts at No. 6 with 14,000 sold. It’s the fourth top 10-charting title on the 32-year-old Top Album Sales chart. The album’s sales were bolstered by its availability in five different vinyl iterations (adding up to a little over 5,000 sold), but its CD was its best-selling format, as its singular available CD sold nearly 6,000 copies.

Rounding out the new top 10 on Top Album Sales are four former No. 1s from Swift: Midnights (rising 8-7 with 13,000; up 48%), Lover (6-8 with 13,000; up 28%), Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) (11-9 with nearly 13,000; up 74%) and Folklore (9-10 with 12,000; up 43%). With five Swift titles in the top 10 concurrently, it’s the second time Swift held at least half of the top 10 in the same week. She previously did it on the July 22-dated chart, with six titles.

In the week ending Nov. 2, there were 3.102 million albums sold in the U.S. (up 75.5% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 2.689 million (up 88.9%) and digital albums comprised 413,000 (up 20%).

There were 1.233 million CD albums sold in the week ending Nov. 2 (up 105.1% week-over-week) and 1.434 vinyl albums sold (up 76.8%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 29.245 million (up 0.8% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 38.585 million (up 18.4%).

Overall year-to-date album sales total 83.758 million (up 5.7% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 68.296 million (up 10.1%) and digital album sales total 15.462 million (down 10.1%).

The Record Company Signs With New Management, Plots Tour in Support of New Album

The Record Company has signed with Jeff Castelaz of Cast Management, the band tells Billboard.

The signing announcement follows the release of the band’s fan-driven The 4th Album, which dropped in September via Round Hill Records, its new label home after being dropped by Concord Music late last year.

Formed in 2011, the Grammy-nominated, L.A.-based roots rock trio featuring Chris Vos (guitar, lead vocals), Alex Stiff (bass), and Marc Cazorla (drums). The band’s first album, Give It Back To You, which included the hit single “Off the Ground,” earned it two Grammy nominations, a No. 1 single on AAA radio and a slot opening for John Mayer on tour.

With a new album out, The Record Company is returning to the road in 2023. It will play the Regent Theatre in L.A. later this month (Nov. 18) before heading out on tour in January for a rebooked cross-country run during which they will play White Oak Music Hall in Houston (Jan. 20), the 9:30 Club in Washington DC (Feb. 2) and the Fillmore in San Francisco (Mar. 14).

“The new record is us taking our own advice from ‘Off the Ground,’ which is a very honest reflection of where we had been in our careers and how we we’re going to get ourselves in gear to keep moving,” Vos tells Billboard. “As an artist, when you’re in a moment where a challenge comes at you, the only choice you really have is to do what you feel is the most honest and true to yourself, and that’s what we are trying to do with this album.”

Dropped by its previous label at the end of last year, the band canceled its tour and began working on writing new music, planning to “hold ourselves accountable to these songs,” Vos explains. “When we finished, we felt like we [made] a really honest record and we could stand behind that.”

The new album was recorded inside Stiff’s L.A. house and relied on older, weathered instruments and makeshift studio equipment to capture a more rootsy sound. Prior to recording, the group members told themselves, “Let’s just do that thing that got us excited years ago when we started the band,” Stiff says. “Just putting our heads together and setting up the mics and doing it ourselves.”

Cazorla remembered that when they pulled out his drumset, the “heads on the drums had not been changed in 12 years. There wasn’t a conscious decision not to include anything new — but there’s magic in those old instruments. They sound like they’ve got stories to tell.”

The 4th Record had been well received by fans for its back-to-its-roots sound, consistency and raw, rowdy moments like first single “Dance on Mondays,” a feisty toe-tapper that opens with a needling bassine and garage-rock-to-blues chorus.

“It’s a song about fighting your way out of a dead-end,” says Stiff, who came up with the song’s hook as a quick quip after being invited out on a school night. Over time, the idea became about saying, “I’m not doing a f—ing dance to anybody anymore,” he adds. “That’s how I’m gonna rebound out of this feeling I’m having. It’s how I am going to overcome it and beat it in the end.”

The next single for The Record Company is “Roll With It,” a more traditional roots rock track with plenty of handclaps, vocal harmonies and call and response choruses — challenging the band to follow up its past success with new victories while maintaining its timeless sound.

“That’s like very much a lot of what’s happened to us in our career,” says Stiff. “We get this like unexpected hit song and we became surrounded by people asking how we are going to duplicate our success; essentially duplicate something that just kind of happened. We don’t know, but we do like how this song, one of the last ones we wrote for this album, came together pretty quickly and very much sounds like our kind of thing, and we’re pretty psyched with it.”
