Maná Achieves First No. 1 on Regional Mexican Airplay With Eden Muñoz Collab ‘Amor Clandestino’

Maná achieves a new milestone in its Billboard chart career as the band’s cover of its own 2011 hit “Amor Clandestino,” now with Eden Muñoz, soars 19-1 on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart dated Nov. 11. It’s the first champ on the list for the Mexican group (which has notched 15 leaders on the Latin Pop Airplay chart), while Muñoz secures his third. “Amor,” in its original Maná-only version in 2011, spent two weeks atop the Latin Pop Airplay list.

“It’s the first time that we are at the top of a regional Mexican list, which is one of the most important formats today,” Fher Olvera, lead singer of Maná, tells Billboard. “We feel very proud of the achievement and knowing that our music can transcend times and formats.”

“Talking about Maná is going back to my childhood when I discovered their music,” Muñoz tells Billboard. “There are no words to describe the feeling of not only collaborating as an artist, as a fan of the band, but above all, as a friend. The band as an act has no comparison for all we know they have achieved, but as human beings they are on another level.”

After three weeks in the top 20, “Amor Clandestino” rallies 19-1 with a 158% gain in audience impressions, to 7 million, earned in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 2, according to Luminate. The 18-rank climb marks the biggest jump to No. 1 in over a decade, since Los Huracanes del Norte’s “Volé Muy Alto” flew 20 positions to the top in November 2007.

During the Oct. 27-Nov. 2 tracking week, “Amor Clandestino’s” biggest supports are comprised of Univision stations KSCA-FM (Los Angeles), KLNO-FM (Dallas), KSOL-FM (San Francisco) and WOJO-FM (Chicago).

“The legendary band Maná joined forces with superstar singer-songwriter Eden Muñoz to bring a unique and updated touch to the classic hit ‘Amor Clandestino’,” Ismar Santa Cruz, Senior VP, Radio Content at Univision, tells Billboard. “This sparked a renewed love affair with the song. As we’re seeing more songs resonate simultaneously across formats, the combination of these artists on such a familiar hit allowed it to impact coast to coast across all our Regional Mexican stations, including our flagship shows El Bueno La Mala y El Feo and El FreeGuey, as well as all our Amor stations, including KLove 107.5 in L.A. and Amor 107.5 in Miami.”

“Amor Clandestino” earns Maná its first No. 1 on Regional Mexican Airplay upon its eighth appearance. Its previous single, “Te Lloré Un Río” with Christian Nodal, took the Mexicans to No. 3 in June 2022. Maná came up just short on its prior visit, as “Ojalá Pudiera Borrarte” achieved a No. 2 peak in October 2007.

“We currently have a duet project in which we have re-recorded our greatest hits with artists such as Christian Nodal, Alejandro Fernández and Sebastián Yatra, among others,” Olvera adds. “What we want is to reach as many audiences as possible with our music. We felt that this song lent itself to a new, very Mexican arrangement, and with Edén it was perfect.”

The original pop version of “Clandestino” dominated Latin Pop Airplay for two weeks in 2011. The song belongs to the Drama y Luz album, Mana’s longest leading set on Latin Pop Albums, with 12 weeks in charge.

For Muñoz, the new song follows two other champs: three-week champ “Chale!” and his featured role in Banda MS’ “Hay Que Hacer Dinero,” for two weeks atop, both in 2022.

Elsewhere, “Clandestino” flies 30-6 on the overall Latin Airplay, the biggest single-week jump to the top 10 since J Balvin and Ed Sheeran’s “Forever My Love” soared 35 rankings in April 2022.

“Eden is genius,” Olvera continues. “A very good friend of the band. He is an all-around guy. Working with him was a pleasure. Together we gave new life to ‘Amor Clandestino’ and we are very happy.”

Taylor Swift Is Apple Music’s 2023 Artist of the Year

It’s hardly a surprise, but it’s still a significant achievement: Taylor Swift is Apple Music’s Artist of the Year for 2023. She’s the No. 1 most-streamed female artist in Apple Music history and is also the female artist with the most songs to reach Apple Music’s Global Daily Top 100.

“I am so honored to be Apple Music’s Artist of the Year,” Swift said in a statement. “Thank you to every single one of you for making this year the most incredible, joyful, celebratory year ever. From streaming the music nonstop to screaming it together in real life at the shows, dancing chaotically in movie theaters, none of this would have been possible without you. Thank you so much.”

This is the first time Swift has received this award, which is now in its fifth year. Billie Eilish was Apple Music’s Artist of the Year for 2019, followed by Lil Baby (2020), The Weeknd (2021) and Bad Bunny (2022).

“Taylor Swift’s impact on music is absolutely undeniable — not just this record-breaking year, but throughout her entire career,” Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music and Beats, said in a statement. “She is a generation-defining artist and a true change agent in the music industry, and there is no doubt that her impact and influence will be felt for years to come. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate her achievements.”

As we all witnessed in real time, in wonder and awe, Swift reached a new level of superstardom this year. In the first 10 months of 2023, she saw 65 songs reach Apple Music’s Global Daily Top 100 — more than any other artist ever.

Swift saw consistent streaming lifts throughout the year, particularly around the enormous success of The Eras Tour. The week the tour kicked off in March, Swift’s streams grew 61 percent globally. She continued to see double-digit growth in monthly streams throughout the summer. Apple Music’s Set List: Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour was the No. 1 most-streamed Set List of the year, and among the top 40 editorial playlists of the year.

“Cruel Summer,” from Swift’s 2019 album Lover, became one of the biggest songs of the summer on Apple Music worldwide. The song re-entered the Global Daily Top 100 in April for the first time in four years and has remained there ever since.

Midnights still stands as the biggest album of all time by a female artist in Apple Music history by first-day and first-week streams worldwide.

On Wednesday (Nov. 8), Apple Music is spotlighting the music and moments that defined Taylor Swift’s Eras era. Listeners can tune in to an array of radio programming celebrating Swift’s two decades’ worth of melodic album narratives, as well as interviews, album collections, and playlists that showcase the singer-songwriter’s journey leading up to this historic year. Tune in at apple.co/am-1.

Swift’s Artist of the Year honor is part of the Apple Music Awards, and she will receive a physical award that includes a silicon chip that powers Apple products. The award is Apple’s “silicon wafer” suspended between a polished sheet of glass, and a machined and anodized aluminum body. According to a press release: “In a symbolic gesture, the same chip powering the devices that put 100 million songs at listeners’ fingertips also sits at the very heart of the Apple Music Awards.”

In other Swift news, she heads into the 2023 Billboard Music Awards on Nov. 19 as the leading finalist, with nods in 20 categories, and is set to restart her blockbuster Eras Tour on Thursday in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Soulja Boy is back in the headlines but this time it is for his maturity. Draco has issued an apology to J. Cole, after cursing him out.

XXL Magazine is reporting that the Atlanta, Georgia native is showing contrition after going after Jermaine. On Monday, November 6 Big Draco went on a tirade against the “John P’s Caddy” MC after he admitted he was a Soulja Boy hater during the interview with Lil Yachty on the A Safe Place Podcast. “Around the time Soulja Boy came out, I don’t know how this happened, but I had a realization within myself ’cause I’m hearing that s**t and I’m like, ‘Man, this s**t, Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em,” J. Cole said.

He went on to further detail the moment in time. “Sounds crazy to say now ’cause it’s such a classic to me. But at that time I had resistance. Similar to when you came out and your class came out, I had resistance. ‘Nah, that’s not the thing that I love. Like what? Y’all f**king with this?’ I was one of them.” Cole then admitted he had hate in his heart at the time. “But there was a part of me that had a realization. I was proud of myself for this realization. So, I was like, ‘Bruh, you a hater.’ Like, ‘Yo, you are literally hating. You know you like this s**t.’”

Needless to say Soulja Boy was not too pleased when this got on his radar and disparaged The Off-Season talent on X, formerly known as Twitter. “P***y n***a I wrote and produced a #1 record at 17 in 2006 drake just gave you your first #1 this year sit the f**k down n***a u not all that @JColeNC u don’t got a #1 solo record I do.” he wrote. Soulja continued on with the slander saying “You a b***h @JColeNC f**k you and ya fans,” Soulja Boy wrote on X. “N***az will slap the s**t out you, f**k your opinion dirty stank dreads having a** b***h.”

Well it seems Nicki Minaj out of all people talked some sense into the S.O.D. Money Gang CEO. “Nicki just told me I took what he said wrong,” he posted on X. “And that he was showing love. So I’m gonna let it go. My bad y’all I really thought dude was hating on me.” He continued “My bad dawg. @JColeNC sorry for the confusion. keep doing your s**t we from two different worlds. I stand on what I stand on, it’s hard coming from where I did man. I dealt with a lot of hate my whole career so it was just messed to think it would come from you.”

J. Cole has yet to acknowledge the situation. You can see Soulja’s social media posts below.

Anitta, Maná, Peso Pluma & More to Perform at Viña del Mar 2024

The lineup was unveiled Wednesday (Nov. 8) by Macarena Ripamonti, the mayor of Viña del Mar in Chile. “We are happy to close the lineup of musical artists of the Viña del Mar Festival 2024 in advance, achieving a balance, with the best exponents for all ages and audiences, it has been a collaborative work of months together with all the production and organization of the event for families to enjoy,” expressed Ripamonti in a statement.

Each day will feature two performers. On Sunday, Feb. 25, Alejandro Sanz and Manuel Turizo will take the stage. Andrea Bocelli — who will make his Viña del Mar debut alongside his son Matteo Bocelli — and Miranda! are set to sing on Monday. Maná and Men at Work will perform on Tuesday; Mora and Anitta on Wednesday; Los Bunkers and Young Cister on Thursday; and to close the event, Peso Pluma and Maria Becerra will take the stage on Friday, March 1.

Launched in 1960, the Viña del Mar International Song Festival is held annually at Quinta Vergara, a 15,000-capacity amphitheater located in the Chilean city of Viña del Mar, in the central coast region of Valparaíso.

Over the course of six days, the event features a mix of superstars, emerging singers and local artists competing for the Silver, Gold and Platinum “Gaviotas,” the name of its awards. These awards are decided by a jury with the help of viewers from their homes, although the so-called “monster” — the audience present at Quinta Vergara — undoubtedly has a great power of influence with its ovations and occasional boos.

The 63rd annual Viña del Mar Festival will be broadcast by Canal 13 and Televisión Nacional de Chile,
while the streaming platform Star+ will broadcast it throughout Latin America. Billboard will broadcast it through its digital platforms.

Ticket sales begin on Thursday, Nov. 16, with the pre-sale (for Claro customers) and general sale the next day. Prices will remain the same as for the 2023 event, according to organizers.

Despite a crowd-pleasing, hip-swiveling salsa to Shakira’s “Whenever, Wherever” that scored a 33 out of 40, Pons and partner Brandon Armstrong ended up in the bottom three alongside Brady Bunch star Barry Williams and partner Peta Murgatroyd and former Bachelorette contestant Charity Lawson and dancer Artem Chigvintsev.

With a judging panel enhanced by guest adjudicator and choreographer/singer Paula Abdul, the episode spotlighted tributes to Britney Spears’ “Slave 4 U” and *NSYNC’s “It’s Gonna Be Me,” with the hoofers scored on both their routines and how closely they paid homage to the original visuals. Alyson Hannigan and Sasha Farber also scored a 33/40 for their quicksetp to Christina Aguilera’s “Candyman,” Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy got a 34/40 for their jazz routine to Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl,” while Ariana Madix and Pasha Pashkov put up a 37/40 for their cha cha to Spears’ “Slave.”

Lawson and Chigvintsev could only muster a 32/40 for their jazz routine to Janet Jackson’s “All For You,” with Mraz and Daniella Karagach scoring a 35/40 for their jazz dance to a-ha’s “Take On Me,” Williams and Murgatroyd putting up a 28/40 for a quickstep to Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing,” while Harry Jowsey and Rylee Arnold brought up the rear with a 24/40 a jazz routine to the 2000 *NSYNC hit.

In the end, though, it was Pons’ time to fly. “I am so grateful for everything. You’re the best… everybody here’s the best. I love them,” Pons said after her elimination. Dancing with the Stars is live Tuesdays on ABC and Disney+, and is available for streaming on Hulu.

Chart Rewind: In 2008, Carrie Underwood Had Another ‘Dream’ Come True

On Nov. 8, 2008, Carrie Underwood’s “Just a Dream” began a two-week reign on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.

The song — written by Hillary Lindsey, Steve McEwan and Gordie Sampson — was released from Underwood’s sophomore album Carnival Ride, which arrived at No. 1 on Top Country Albums, her second of a record-setting nine straight career-opening leaders through 2021. The set also became her first of four No. 1s on the all-genre Billboard 200.

“Dream” became Underwood’s seventh of 14 Hot Country Songs chart-toppers, among 30 top 10s. On Country Airplay, she has rolled up 16 leaders, the most among women.

Born in Muskogee, Okla., Underwood came to prominence following her win on the fourth season of American Idol in 2005. Her coronation track “Inside Your Heaven” blasted in atop the Billboard Hot 100 that July, while “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” her first proper country single, dominated Hot Country Songs for six frames starting in January 2006. She most recently ruled Hot Country Songs with “Something in the Water” for seven weeks in 2014-15.

On Aug. 26, Underwood wrapped the last of three stadium shows with Guns N’ Roses at Nashville’s GEODIS Park. After her opening set, she returned to the stage, joining the band on a couple of their classics, “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “Paradise City.”

Underwood’s latest single, “Out of That Truck,” which she co-penned, ranks at No. 38 on the Nov. 11-dated Country Airplay chart. She is nominated for the coveted entertainer of the year trophy at the 57th Annual Country Music Association Awards, airing Wednesday (Nov. 8) on ABC.
