SiriusXM Unveils New App, Rebrand, Channels With John Mayer and Kelly Clarkson

SiriusXM hosted an event in New York City on Wednesday (Nov. 8) in which the company unveiled a new-look version of its app, set to debut Dec. 14, while announcing a rebrand and a slew of new programming initiatives, including new channels run by John Mayer and Kelly Clarkson, among others.

In conjunction with the app, Sirius will also offer a streaming-only subscription tier for $9.99 per month, aimed at younger listeners who are interested in the service’s 400-plus channels of content and podcasts but don’t generally listen in the car, where Sirius has become dominant in recent years. The new-look app will include increased customization, a new playback experience, an audio library, a new home for its podcast content and improvements in search and discovery, executives stressed at the two-hour event.

The new channels will begin rolling out in the next few months, starting with Clarkson’s channel, called the Kelly Clarkson Connection, which will be available starting today. Clarkson appeared on stage at the event with her band and introduced her channel — which she said will be on Channel 12, as she isn’t a fan of odd numbers — that will include her music and a variety of other music she enjoys and is inspired by. To kick that off, she and her band performed a cover of Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” — which she said they just learned hours before — and her own “Since U Been Gone.”

New channels from Shaggy (Shaggy’s Boombastic Radio), who also appeared on stage, and Smokey Robinson (Smokey’s Soul Town) are also available beginning today. A limited-edition channel from Dolly Parton, Dolly Parton’s Rockstar Radio, will go online Nov. 15, while Mayer’s show, which will be available year-round and is called Life With John Mayer, is set to debut Nov. 22. A weekly show by James Corden and a new true-crime channel from Crime Junkies podcast host Ashley Flowers will also soon come online.

“The introduction of the new SiriusXM streaming experience marks a pivotal moment in our history, one that kicks off a new era of innovation at our Company,” SiriusXM CEO Jennifer Witz said in a statement following the event. “And this launch is just the beginning; we will continue to iterate and develop our product offerings throughout the next year and beyond as we strive to deliver our subscribers the best listening experience on the go, in the car, and wherever they choose to tune in. From can’t-miss live moments to the perfect soundtrack for any occasion, with the new SiriusXM, we are putting our differentiators at the forefront and welcoming in a new generation of listeners, bringing them closer to what they love.”

The event opened with Witz introducing the new app, before turning the stage over to Sirius’ biggest and longest-tenured star, Howard Stern, who spoke about his frustrations during his time on terrestrial radio that led to him taking a chance on the then-nascent Sirius 17 years ago. “Everyone said it’s gonna fail, you’re stupid, you’re ugly — and those were my parents,” he joked. “To me, SiriusXM was an oasis in a desert of censorship. … My mission is to convince audiences that radio is worth paying for, and I think that mission continues to grow. I think there’s a bright future for Sirius. I banked my career on it.”

In addition to Clarkson and Shaggy, the event saw cameos from Conan O’Brien, Andy Cohen, Maren Morris, Flowers and Kevin Hart, while Corden and Mayer appeared in short video segments. And it ended with a performance from Def Jam rapper Armani White, who performed his hit song “Billie Eilish.”

As part of the rebrand — which includes a new logo — executives also re-introduced Sirius’ dog mascot, named Stella, after the Dog Star constellation from which Sirius took its name. The company also announced a new partnership with Audible to share content beginning next year, as well as renewed partnerships with car manufacturers and hotel chains. Next year will also see the company bringing on 160 new artist DJs, including Olivia Rodrigo and Morris, among many others.

Watch ‘The Voice’ Contestant Nini Iris Stun With a Powerful Rendition of a Radiohead Classic

If anyone is on the good side of the “Karma Police,” it’s Nini Iris. On the Tuesday (Nov. 7) episode of The Voice, the Team Niall contestant delivered a show-stopping rendition of Radiohead’s 1997 classic to clinch the victory in The Knockouts round.

Going into the episode, Iris was on a hot streak. After securing a spot on Team Niall thanks to her winning performance of Everybody Loves an Outlaw’s “I See Red” during the blind auditions, Iris defeated Sofia Hoffman after the two singers tackled Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” during the battle rounds. For her knockout showdown, Iris faced off against teammates Azán — performing Anita Baker’s “Caught Up in the Rapture” — and Olivia Minogue, who sang Evanescence’s “Bring Me to Life.”

For her performance, Iris took some cues from Radiohead’s original — which served as the second single from 1997’s OK Computer, peaking at No. 14 on Alternative Airplay. She opted to ride the song’s natural dynamics with some tasteful additional riffs peppered across her arrangement. Once she reached the climax of the song and started unleashing a series of jaw-dropping belts, Iris began to earn visible and audible praise from not just her own coach (Niall Horan), but also coaches John Legend and Gwen Stefani. At the end of her performance, Legend quipped, “So good! Man, Dan + Shay … coaching the hell out these artists!”

Three-time Grammy-winning country duo Dan + Shay filled in as Team Niall’s rehearsal coach for the knockouts due to the One Direction alum’s scheduling conflict. Having already appeared as guest performers and battle advisors across several previous seasons, the “Save Me the Trouble” duo will be joining the reality competitions series as full-time coaches next season. Billboard chart-topping country music icon Wynonna Judd served as this season’s mega mentor.

Iris ultimately came out on top in her knockout round, cementing her advancement to the playoffs.

Dreamliner Acquires Hemphill Brothers Coach in Blockbuster Deal

Dreamliner Luxury Coaches has acquired Hemphill Brothers Coach Company, combining the two private bus and coach tour operators into the largest provider of entertainer busses in the world.

Formed just three years ago, the Nashville-based Dreamliner now boasts a fleet of 190 high-end luxury coaches, servicing approximately 50% of North American arena and stadium touring market, CEO Jeremy Maul estimates. The high-end bus company specializes in leasing and servicing artist and headliner buses with a client list that includes Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Drake, Jonas Brothers, Chris Stapleton, Olivia Rodrigo, Zach Bryan and more.

Hemphill Brothers was launched in 1980 by Joey and Trent Hemphill, Tennessee-based brothers who toured in the family Gospel band and eventually bought out their father’s two-bus leasing company. In 1995, Hemphill Brothers opened their current 55,000 square foot office complex and shop facility on 15 acres of land near Nashville.

Dreamliner was founded in late 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic by businessman Rich Thomson, managing partner at Caprice Capital Partners and Jeremy Maul, Thomson saw the revival of the touring business as potential investment opportunity for his LA based private investment firm focused mainly on small cap companies with at least $2 million in EBITDA.

The bet on Dreamliner was fairly simple – while the pandemic had completely devastated the touring and concert business, the industry was expected to come back strong in mid-to-late 2021, as evidenced by ticket purchases during the pandemic and pent-up demand. Artists returning to the road would encounter a shortage of high-end luxury buses due to a pivot in the transportation industry away from concert touring.

The tour bus shortage, coupled with the explosion in demand, caused the leasing price for tour buses to nearly double overnight and created a backlog of demand for the industry, Maul explained.

Dreamliner’s first tour was the Jonas Brothers’ August 2021 tour. In June 2022, Dreamliner purchased Diamond Coach leasing from founder Kyle Ervin, growing the company’s fleet from 12 buses to 75 buses while establishing the company’s headquarters in Nashville.

Maul told Billboard that the Hemphill purchase took approximately one year to finalize. The combined business is expected to generate $100 million in business in 2024 from a fleet of 190 coaches, Maul said.

That puts Dreamliner ahead of Encore Luxury Coach, which briefly held the title of largest entertainment coach leasing company in North America following its acquisition of Nitetrain in September.

“As we further our goal of redefining the art of tour travel, we will leverage the strengths and experience at the heart of both Dreamliner and Hemphill to become the industry’s largest and most sought-after resource for high-end tour coaches,” Maul said in a recent press release.

Diddy Brings Out Shyne During Charity Concert in London

Diddy and Giggs teamed up in the spirit of charity to aid the Black British community in London on Tuesday (Nov. 7). The concert — which benefited Sickle Cell Society and Black Minds Matter — featured a bunch of appearances from the rappers, mainly Diddy, who brought out his once-prized Bad Boy signee Shyne for a quick performance of “Bonnie & Shyne” and “Bad Boyz.”

Clad in a black suit, Shyne strolled onto the stage alongside his former boss at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire. The last time Shyne and Diddy performed together was at the BET Awards in 2022. In a September Instagram post, Diddy gushed about Shyne’s success as a burgeoning politician. The artist was voted into Belize’s House of Representatives in 2020, and was re-elected as the leader of the United Democratic Party in 2022.

“Words can’t explain how proud I am of Shyne. It’s truly remarkable to see everything he’s gone through and to see him turn his life totally around and get on the path to making a positive impact on his country and his people,” he wrote at the time. “His re-election is a major victory for him, Hip-Hop globally, and the people of Belize. Next stop, PRIME MINISTER’S OFFICE! We’re not going to stop until my brother is the Prime Minister. I believe in you! I love you! I’m proud of you!”

As for Diddy, he’s continuing his success on the artist front following his newest offering, The Love Album: Off The Grid. In late October, he released the trailer for his upcoming film, Off the Grid, inspired by his R&B-infused album.

The trailer features Diddy and budding actress Eva Apio in a romantic whirlwind anchored by passion and drama. The chemistry between the two is entrancing as they share moments of vulnerability, endure a high-speed car chase with the cops and more.

“Working with Eva Apio was an incredible experience. Her talent and energy brought my vision to life,” Diddy said in a press release.

HHW Gaming: Snoop Dogg & His Son Are Building A Platform For Minority Creators With Death Row Gaming

Snoop Dogg & His Son Launch Death Row Gaming

Snoop Dogg is looking to do more than give out Death Row chains since acquiring the iconic music label. He is teaming up with his son, Cordell Broadus, to help put minority creators and gamers on the map.

Spotted on HypeBeast, the iconic Hip-Hop star and his seed are working together to give minority creators and artists a platform to develop and publish on Fortnite using the company’s Unreal Editor.

Broadus made the dope announcement while speaking at AFROTECH.

Per HypeBeast:

“We’ve been creating games, and none of them has been published anything on a huge scale, but on a very amateur level,” Broadus told AFROTECH. “We’ve been around games for the last five to six years. And Snoop, he’s done mobile games. A few of them in the past five to six years in apps and stuff like that. So we’ve always had the mindset of building it on our own.”

He added, “We felt like let’s really put resources into building Death Row Games and making a home for diverse creators in the gaming ecosystem and be a part of the narrative, the storytelling of what the next game should be looking like. And I keep saying ‘show representation of the culture in these sectors,’ versus us just being the talent. We wanted to make sure that we’re part of the decision that’s being made and more importantly tell these stories from diverse creators and focus on creatives in underserved communities.

Calvin Broadus Is Excited To Work With His Dad

“I think it’s dope for a father and a son to be working together for one, and for two he’s 51 years old. So he may be out of touch with some of these things.” He continued, “And I’m always there to keep him up to speed and translate information to him in a tone that he can understand. I think that’s more important… but just as much as I’m giving him game he’s given me the keys to make these decisions with a IP as big as his.”
Salute to both of them. We hope Death Row Gaming accomplishes its mission by opening the doors for Black and Brown creators in the video game space.

See Renee Rapp as Regina George in New ‘Mean Girls’ Musical Trailer Soundtracked by Olivia Rodrigo

Her name is Regina George, and she is a massive deal. Renee Rapp shines as the leader of “The Plastics” in the official trailer for Mean Girls, the upcoming adaptation of the Broadway musical, which itself was an adaptation of the original 2004 Tina Fey film. And guess which 20-year-old pop princess’ music is featured? Miss Olivia Rodrigo herself.

The new teaser jumps from second-person point of view — with Rapp saying in character, “You could be really hot if you changed, like, everything” — to dynamic shots of the “Snow Angel” singer leading her squad of Queen Bees, Gretchen (played by Bebe Wood) and Karen (played by Avantika). Other stars featured in the trailer are The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s Chris Briney as Aaron Samuels, Moana‘s Auliʻi Cravalho as Janis and The Office‘s Jenna Fischer as Mrs. Heron, with Fey returning as Ms. Norbury and Tim Meadows as Principal Duvall.

Released by Paramount Wednesday (Nov. 8), the trailer includes all the hallmarks of the original Mean Girls, from the lipstick-kissed “Burn Book” to the sexy Santa-themed talent show dance performed by Regina, Gretchen, Karen and new girl/leading lady Cady Heron (played by Angourie Rice). It also promises to put a modern twist on the story, with iPhones, TikTok and Instagram Live taking on a major roles.

And true to the original, the newest version of Mean Girls is guaranteed to have a lot of chaos, making Rodrigo’s raucous Guts single “Get Him Back!” the perfect song to soundtrack the trailer. The sync comes just after the “Drivers License” singer lent an original track called “Can’t Catch Me Now” to the upcoming Hunger Games installment, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Mean Girls arrives in theaters Jan. 12, 2024. Watch the trailer above.

C-Knight, Member of G-Funk Rap Crew Dove Shack, Dies at 52

C-Knight, a founding member of Long Beach G-funk rap crew Dove Shack, has died at age 52. The news was confirmed by TMZ on Tuesday (Nov. 7), when a member of the rapper’s family reportedly told the gossip site that the MC born Arnez Blount had died that day after being taken off life support several weeks after suffering a stroke; at press time Billboard could not independently confirm the details of Knight’s death.

The site earlier reported that Knight’s father said his son was hospitalized on October 18 after his blood sugar drastically spiked due to diabetes. The rapper reportedly subsequently suffered a stroke and went into cardiac arrest while getting dialysis in the hospital, was resuscitated and put on life support in an unresponsive state that he never re-emerged from.

Knight was best known for his smooth flow as part of the Long Beach, CA crew — which also featured rappers B-Roc and 2Scoops — whose affiliation with g-funk icon Warren G. manifested on the song “This Is the Shack” on G’s 1994 classic debut album Regulate… G Funk Era album; the song also served as Dove Shack’s public debut.

In 1995, the trio released their full-length debut, also titled This Is The Shack, on G-Funk Entertainment/Def Jam Recordings; the album peaked at No. 68 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The collection spawned one charting single, the slow-rolling “Summertime in the LBC,” which hit No. 54 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart after being featured in the 1995 hip-hop doc The Show. In addition to the Warren G-produced “This Is the Shack,” the group’s debut featured two songs produced by Run-DMC’s Jam Master Jay (“Bomb Drop,” “East Side Party”).

C-Knight released the solo album Knight Time in 2001 and Dove Shack issued their second, and final, album, Reality Has Got Me Tied Up, in 2006.

B-Roc paid tribute to his fallen comrade in an Instagram post featuring a picture of the two and the message, “This is like f–king nightmare I swear this s–t hurt different and I don’t want to talk about s–t to nobody so please just let me be and pray for us… On my soul I love you bro and I already don’t know what the f–k to do wit u being gone.”
