Interscope Records Co-Founder Jimmy Iovine Facing Sexual Abuse Lawsuit

Interscope Records co-founder Jimmy Iovine is being sued by an unnamed woman for sexual abuse, forcible touching, sexual harassment and retaliation, according to a document filed in New York court Wednesday (Nov. 22).

Though the full complaint is not yet available, a summons with notice was filed by the woman’s attorneys, Douglas Wigdor and Meredith Firetog at Wigdor Law. The case includes an accusation of “multiple instances” of abuse along with a specific incident of sexual misconduct that occurred in New York in 2007.

The woman is seeking economic and compensatory damages, punitive damages, attorneys’ fees and costs.

The case against Iovine is just the latest in a string of sexual misconduct lawsuits filed over the last month against men in the music industry, including industry executives like L.A. Reid and superstar artists like Sean “Diddy” Combs and Axl Rose. The spike in cases is due to the looming expiration at midnight Thursday (Nov. 23) of New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which created a one-year window for alleged survivors to take legal action over years-old accusations that would typically be barred under the statute of limitations.

The summons effectively extends the deadline to submit a complete lawsuit.

Originally a recording engineer, Iovine co-founded Interscope Records with Ted Field in 1990 and went on to launch such stars as No Doubt, 2Pac, Eminem, Beck and Lady Gaga. He later became chairman/CEO of Interscope Geffen A&M and co-founded Beats Electronics and Beats Music with Dr. Dre, which were acquired by Apple in 2014 for a combined $3 billion. Iovine served as a creative consultant for Apple Music until August 2018.

The “Munch” rapper’s terra cotta figurine features her signature orange Afro, where the chia sprouts will take one to two weeks to fully sprout from, her pink hoodie, and $100,000 diamond chain with the cartoon rendering of her face.

“Like my lyrics say, ‘I’m breakin’ records and I’m breakin’ news,’” she said in a statement obtained by Complex. “I’m not sure who stole whose look, but I’m into it and am very excited about this fun partnership. Chia Pet is an iconic brand with a dope jingle — so we have that in common.”

Pio Mio Studios even made an old-school commercial to go along with the Munchkin-approved product.

“My manager Tara is such a beast,” JB Brode, founder and owner of Living Product, told Complex. “She connected us to help design merch for Ice Spice. Ideating around that led us to this lightbulb moment like, ‘Damn, an Ice Spice Chia Pet would be crazy.’ It started as just an idea for a graphic, but we knew that the idea deserved its own moment. We pitched it to Spice’s team, who graciously let us pursue the official collaboration with Chia, and many months and negotiations later here we are. The commercial really brought it full circle for us. Our guys at Pio Mio Studios executed our vision perfectly and it tied everything together beautifully.”

Ice Spice’s Chia Pet costs $34.99 and is available to purchase on Chia.com and Amazon, and it will be available on IceSpiceMusic.com starting Friday.

UMG Germany Goes 10 for 10 on the Country’s Album Chart With Taylor Swift, Beatles & More

Usually, when one says a label dominates an album chart, that means it has most of the top ten — seven, for example, or maybe sometimes eight. This week in Germany, however, UMG has all 10.

This seems to be the first time this has happened in Germany, although it is hard to say this authoritatively, since both the charts, as well as the underlying business, have changed so much.

The 10 albums that occupy the top of the chart are very different: German rappers Kontra K and Shirin David come in at No. 1 and No. 4, respectively; albums from K-pop stars Stray Kids and Jung Kook come in at No. 2 and 10; The Rolling Stones are No. 3; The Beatles occupy Nos. 5, 6 and 7 (with the “blue album,” the “red album” and a deluxe box set of the “red” and “blue” albums); Taylor Swift is No. 8, with 1989 (Taylor’s Version); and the band Santiano comes in at No. 9. Konta K also has the No. 1 single in the country this week with “Die Sonne,” a collaboration with SANTOS.

Scoring all 10 albums on the top 10 is “likely unparalleled in the history of the German album charts and is a great example of our entire team effort with our amazing artists,” Frank Briegmann, chairman/CEO of Universal Music Central Europe and Deutsche Grammophon, told the German music trade magazine Muzikwoche. “I find it particularly remarkable that we can find our domestic as well as our international acts from a wide variety of genres at the top of the charts.”

Germany still sells more physical product than any other major market, which is one reason why legacy acts like the Stones and the Beatles chart higher than they do elsewhere in Europe. The country’s charts are also calculated in a way that assigns more weight to higher-priced packages, such as vinyl box sets.

Which Is Your Favorite Thank You Song About Being Grateful? Vote!

While there are a glaring lack of songs solely about Thanksgiving — with the exception of Adam Sandler’s cult-classic track “The Thanksgiving Song” — there are more than enough tunes in pop culture about being thankful for friends, family, successes and more.

To get into the thankful spirit, Billboard compiled the 20 best songs about expressing gratitude in one form or another. Kelly Clarkson‘s 2002 debut track, “A Moment Like This,” entered the list, and with good reason. The song, which hails from her 2003 debut album Thankful, premiered as she won the inaugural season of American Idol that year, and expressed her gratitude at being the program’s first ever winner. And to put the cherry on top, the song was Clarkson’s first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

It’s hard to talk about songs being grateful without mentioning Celine Dion‘s 2013 track, “Thankful.” The chorus sees the powerhouse vocalist feeling blessed for being able to live life, and having her prayers be answered (“I’m thankful you listened/ Thankful to heaven/ Thankful for feeling alive again/ Thankful that hearts always mend”).

And of course, there’s Ariana Grande‘s viral 2019 track “Thank U, Next.” After coming off of two major life changing events — the tragic passing of ex-boyfriend Mac Miller in 2018 and the bombing of her Manchester concert a year before that — Grande took a moment to acknowledge her personal struggles while giving her exes a positive shoutout.

The list also includes songs from FKA Twigs, Backstreet Boys, Ozuna and more, but we want to know: Which track is your favorite? Revisit the list here and vote in the poll below.

Record Exec Phil Quartararo, Who Helped Break Paula Abdul & The Spice Girls, Dies at 67

Phil Quartararo, the former EMI, Virgin and Warner Bros. record mogul who helped break Paula Abdul, the Spice Girls, Linkin Park and numerous other pop megastars, died Wednesday morning in Los Angeles of cancer. He was 67.

“I loved helping an artist’s dream come true,” Quartararo told an interviewer in 2021. “I cannot press upon you the satisfaction of doing that.”

Known as “Phil Q,” the gregarious, Brooklyn, N.Y.-born Quartararo was a ubiquitous figure in the record industry, helping to break U2 on pop radio in the mid-’80s as senior vp of promotion at Island Records, engineering the Spice Girls’ marketing plan in the ’90s as CEO/president of Virgin Records America, and working over the years with Madonna, Coldplay, The Smashing Pumpkins, Faith Hill and Green Day. “Phil believed in me like no other,” Paula Abdul said in a statement. “His ceaseless support for me during my time at Virgin was unparalleled. I will miss him.”

In the early 2000s, when Napster, MP3s and digital piracy threatened to destroy the business, Quartararo was one of the executives in Steve Jobs’ office when the late Apple CEO promised to shift the business from $10 CDs to 99-cent downloads. “At the end of the day, 99 cents for a track is better than nothing for a track,” Quartararo would say.

Virgin Records’ founder, Richard Branson, recruited Quartararo to help launch his American label in 1986, and over the years Quartararo rose to president and CEO. In 1997, according to The New York Times, Quartararo helped “turn Virgin into EMI’s crown jewel,” generating most of the parent label’s $5.9 billion in yearly sales.

Quartararo left Virgin that year to become president of Warner Bros. Records, where he worked with Madonna, Linkin Park, Josh Groban, Cher and Wilco, among others. In 2005, he made his way back to EMI, Virgin’s owner, as an executive, helping to shift the label’s focus from physical sales and distribution to marketing and launching Coldplay, Norah Jones, Keith Urban and others.

After leaving EMI in 2005, Quartararo became an entrepreneur and consultant, working with music-distribution startups, streaming services and talent managers and managed acts such as Japanese composer Yoshiki and metal band X Japan. He also ran Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation Records from 2016-2019. “Phil approached everything with a kind heart and a light spirit and sense of humor,” says Taylor Jones, a co-owner of music-focused multimedia company The Hello Group, where Quartararo was president and chairman. “He was incredibly stress-resistant. His values have been instilled in the very core and ethos of our company.”

Adds Evan Lamberg, president of Universal Music Publishing North America: “Phil Q was arguably the ‘’Mayor of Goodwill’ in our industry for decades. There is no one that he touched that was not better for having known him.”

In 2013, Quartararo told Billboard he didn’t miss major labels, but “I miss dealing with the artists. I miss sharing with young people, teaching them the music business. That’s the part I loved the most. I don’t miss the big company, per se. Because the big company is cumbersome and unfortunately can’t move as quickly as the consumer or artists need to move. It’s not as nimble as it used to be.”

Cardi B’s Love for ‘Baby Shark’: A Timeline

It’s been years since the infectious kids song “Baby Shark” wiggled its way onto everyone’s computer screens in 2016. And since it went viral in 2018, eventually charting in the Billboard Hot 100 top 40 the next year, the absurdly catchy dance-along hit has gained a number of high-profile fans — including Cardi B.

So much so, Cardi and her husband Offset, along with their daughter Kulture Kiari and Wave Set, have all been incorporated into the Baby Shark cinematic universe. Not only did the famous family get sharkified in a 2022 episode of Baby Shark’s Big Show, but they also reprised their roles in 2023’s Baby Shark’s Big Movie.

And if you think that a children’s program isn’t cool enough to warrant attention from someone known for her give-no-f–ks raps, think again. She might be the woman who coined the phrase “bring a bucket and a mop for this wet a– p—y,” but she’s also a longtime vocal supporter of the small-but-mighty oceanic hero, and she has the social media track record to prove it. In fact, the lyrics to “I Like It” could be changed to “I like dollars, I like diamonds, I like stunting, I like shining — and most of all, I like Baby Shark.”

So, in celebration of Cardi’s unabashed passion for the series, as well as her numerous contributions to the Baby Shark canon, keep reading for a full timeline of the outspoken Grammy winner’s yearslong love for “Baby Shark” (doo-doo doo-doo doo-doo!).
