Spotify’s Share Price Jumps 7.5% On Layoff News

Spotify shares jumped 7.5% on Monday (Dec. 4) following news the company will lay off 17% of its global workforce. CEO Daniel Ek called the layoffs a “crucial step” in a wider effort to be “relentlessly resourceful.” The layoffs amount to roughly 1,500 staffers based on the company’s recent disclosure of having 9,241 full-time employees.

Spotify shares opened Monday at $193 per share, up 6.8% from Friday’s $180.69 closing price, and rose as high as $201.37, up 11.4%. By closing at $194.17, Spotify raised its market capitalization by approximately $2.6 billion to $37.9 billion and brought its year-to-date improvement to 146%.

Cutting such a large number of jobs will drastically reduce the amount spent on salaries and associated employee costs. Spotify expects to incur roughly 130 million to 145 million euros ($141 million to $157 million) in the current quarter for severance-related payments and the impairment of real estate assets associated with the smaller footprint, the company revealed in its SEC filing announcing the layoffs. Those amounts will be partially offset by forfeitures of equity awards by some departing employees. As a result, Spotify increased its guidance for fourth-quarter operating loss to a range of 93 million to 108 million euros ($101 million to $117 million).

After Spotify realizes those layoff-related expenses, it expects “meaningful operational efficiencies” in the future. In the financial world, efficiencies equals profitability and more cash left over for equity holders. On Monday, Analysts at Guggenheim raised their Spotify price target from $200 to $220 while J.P. Morgan analysts increased their price target from $205 to $220. In both cases, the analysts believe the layoffs will deliver on profitability goals laid out in the company’s 2022 Investor Day. At that June 8, 2022, presentation, Spotify’s leadership laid out plans to achieve 40% gross margin and 20% operating margin by reducing costs and expanding its podcast and audiobook businesses; the July subscription price increases will help, too. Both would be huge improvements from its 25% gross margin and -5% operating margin in the first nine months of 2023.

Taylor Swift’s ‘You’re Losing Me (From the Vault)’ Debuts on Hot 100

After only two days of tracking, Taylor Swift’s “You’re Losing Me (From the Vault)” debuts at No. 46 on the latest Dec. 9-dated Billboard Hot 100.

The song tallied 8.7 million U.S. streams and 19,000 downloads sold in its first two days. The sales sum helps the song debut at No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart, becoming her record-extending 28th leader.

The song earns Swift her 322nd career entry on the Hot 100, the second-most of all time after Drake (327). The track is also Swift’s 54th entry on the chart in 2023 alone, extending her record for the most ever in a calendar year among solo artists. The only act with more in a calendar year is the Glee Cast, which tallied 80 entries in 2010.

Swift released “You’re Losing Me (From the Vault)” on streaming services on Wednesday, Nov. 29, as a thank-you to fans after Spotify named her its most-streamed artist on the platform of 2023. “Um ok this is unreal??,” she wrote on Instagram. “I just wanted to say to anyone who listened to my music this year, anywhere in the world, thank you. Getting named Spotify’s Global Top Artist in 2023 is truly the best birthday/holiday gift you could’ve given me. We’ve seriously had THE MOST fun this year out there on tour and now this. Are you serious. So I was trying to think of a way to thank you, and a lot of you have been asking me to put “You’re Losing Me (From the Vault)” on streaming… so here you go! You can finally listen EVERYWHERE now [kiss emoji].”

“You’re Losing Me (From the Vault)” appears on Midnights (The Late Night Edition), a special edition of the album that was first released to fans who attended the Eras Tour concert at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. A digital download of the song was then later released on Swift’s webstore for 24 hours.

NBA YoungBoy & Joe Budden Got Beef, Birdman Involved

Brooklyn Chophouse Grand Opening

Birdman, who comes across as someone who isn’t about the funnies, issued a warning to retired rapper turned top podcaster, Joe Budden. The Cash Money Records honcho told Budden to halt his critiques of NBA YoungBoy and leave the Louisiana rapper alone, this after YoungBoy shared some thoughts too.

On episode 680 of The Joe Budden Podcast, the cast spoke briefly about the latest single from NBA YoungBoy, which turned into a moment for Budden to express his disdain for the rapper, who is currently on house arrest in Utah. Among the rappers of his generation, YoungBoy has a lengthy discography despite his relative youth and a highly supportive fanbase.

Although Birdman hails from New Orleans, YoungBoy has expressed sincere admiration for the mogul and explained that the pair are friends despite hailing from two different cities in their home state. That connection was on full display after the New Orleans boss took to Instagram Stories and sternly told Budden to back off from commenting on his young colleague.

“@JOEBUDDEN YOU F*KIN WITH SOMETHIN YOU SHOULD LEAVE ALONE,” read a portion of the message, which features an image of YoungBoy’s fiery response to Budden in which he also took a dig at the “Pump It Up” star’s sexual prowess along with telling Budden to not “rat” on him and inviting him to Gravedigger Mountain, which is presumably where the rapper lives in the Beehive State.

As one can imagine, NBA YoungBoy’s fanbase is giving Joe Budden the business due to the fact that he’s no longer an official Hip-Hop artist. Some on the other side are saying that because Budden was indeed nice in his day, he has a right to his opinion. Further, some are wondering why the opinion of a, in their words, failed rapper, has artists reacting in this fashion.

Both singers have been spotted toting around the unique-shaped bags, and Gomez has been opting for shimmery statement styles that are perfect for topping off your night-out and holiday party looks. Rather than grab a tote bag to carry all your essentials in, the “Single Soon” singer is making a case with the brand’s Miracle and Purpose purses, which are also both under $300.

While Swift opted to pair a date-night look from October with Aupen’s Nirvana purse, Gomez stepped out in Paris on Nov. 26 wearing a black fur jacket and long maxi black dress for a friend’s wedding with which she paired the brand’s Miracle purse. That’s not the only time she sported it though: On the same day, she grabbed the purse to complete her black and crystal oversize blazer look, showing the accessory’s versatility.

Whether you’re looking for a stylish gift for music lovers — especially for fans of the “Lose You to Love Me” singer — or just want to channel Gomez’s style into your own, keep reading to shop the styles worn by the star.

In Spears’ recently released memoir, The Woman in Me, the “Piece of Me” singer shouted out the DJ, writing, “one of the people who was kindest to me when I really needed kindness was Paris Hilton.” In response, Hilton told Kelly Clarkson on the latter’s talk show: “I was crying when I read that, that really touched me. She’s just so strong, I love her so much and I’m just so proud of her for speaking her truth and writing this whole book. That quote meant a lot me when I read it.”

Hilton has always been supportive of Spears, attending her wedding to now-ex-husband Sam Asghari in 2021 — and declining an invitation to DJ at President Joe Biden’s Summit of Americas dinner at the Getty Villa in Los Angeles for the event. Upon the release of Spears’ “Hold Me Closer” duet with Elton John, Hilton showered her friend with support on TikTok. “Yaaass Britney [sparkle emoji] the queen is back!” Hilton wrote on a video of herself dancing along to the track all over her pink Bentley.

Academy of Country Music Announces Rule Changes, Key Dates for 2024 ACM Awards

The Academy of Country Music announced rule changes in several categories on Monday (Dec. 4) that it hopes will allow it to bring back its award for new duo or group of the year — which it hasn’t presented since 2018.

“ACM new duo or group of the year is an illustrious category that has seen the likes of Brooks & Dunn and The Chicks win early in their careers, as well as both reigning ACM duo of the year Brothers Osborne and reigning ACM group of the year Old Dominion,” said Tommy Moore, ACM vice president of artist and industry relations, governance and board administration. “The category hasn’t been awarded in recent years, and we’re hopeful these changes in category rules and minimum qualifying entrant levels will allow us to bring back this award, a fan favorite, as well as celebrate additional deserving emerging artists in the critical early years of their career.”

The category was presented every year from 1989 to 2002, but has been presented sporadically since then. In 2009, separate awards were presented for groups (Gloriana) and duos (Joey + Rory), but the award hasn’t been presented at all nine times since 2003.

“The 59th ACM Awards cycle brings changes to awards categories that will allow more artists, groups, and duos the chance to qualify and be recognized with an ACM Award, which will benefit emerging artists and help put a spotlight on the future of the genre,” said Daniel Miller, chair of the ACM awards, voting, and membership committee. “I’d like to thank the awards committee members, board members, and board officers for their thoughtful contributions in expanding eligibility to reflect our evolving industry and the realities for new artists on their path to success.”

The ACM also announced the submissions and ballot timeline for professional membership voting for the 59th Academy of Country Music Awards, coming in May 2024.

The 59th Academy of Country Music Awards, produced by dick clark productions, will stream exclusively on Prime Video for a global audience for a third straight year, live from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, as part of the ACM Awards’ recently-announced renewed partnership with Amazon.

The 58th ACM Awards garnered more than 7.7 million viewers on Prime Video, plus additional viewership across Amazon Music, the Amazon Music channel on Twitch, and Amazon Live, making the show hosted by Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks one of the most-watched awards shows of the year.

The ACM board of directors approved changes to the Academy’s new female artist of the year, new male artist of the year, and new duo or group of the year, extending charting for those categories to open eligibility to more artists. The ACM board of directors also adopted criteria to require a minimum of three eligible submissions to award a category.

New Eligible Submission Minimum

A minimum of three eligible submissions are required to award the category.  In the instance there are not three eligible submissions within a category, a professional panel may vote to allow additional considerations to meet the required minimum.

Extended Charting for New Artist Categories

This applies tonew female artist, new male artist, new group/duo categories. Presented to an individual artist, group or duo who gains initial fame or significantly greater recognition during the promotion of a debut or sophomore album within the eligibility period.

The artist must have released a single that reached the top 50 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs or the Mediabase Country charts. Any albums self-released through an independent label the artist owns and operates may not be counted as a debut or sophomore album, unless it produces a top 50 single reported by Billboard’s Hot Country Songs or Mediabase Country charts.  The nominees shall be determined by a nomination ballot(s) and are subject to the approval of the Board. The winner shall be determined by a vote of the ACM professional membership.

Any artist who served or is currently serving as a lead member of a duo or group is not eligible for individual category recognition. Additionally, any artist who has gained initial fame as a solo artist or as part of a duo or group in another genre is not eligible in these categories.

An artist may be a nominee two times in a three-year period. Once an artist releases the lead single from a third studio album, they will no longer be eligible in this category.  If an artist is a winner in the new female artist /new male artist/new duo or group (or any respective previously named) category their first year on a ballot, they will not be eligible in any new artist categories again.  Any artist who has previously won the award for entertainer, female artist, male artist, duo or group of the year (or any respective previously named category) is ineligible for a new artist nomination.

Submission Window

Submissions for the 59th Academy of Country Music Awards will open at 11 a.m. CT / 9 a.m. PT on Monday, Jan. 8, 2024. The Academy will accept entries through Friday, Jan. 26, 2024 at 7 p.m. CT / 5 p.m. PT. A full voting timeline is below.

Empress Of, “Femenine”

This snappy single from Empress Of is a dance-pop treat on which she sings of knowing exactly what she wants — and refuses to settle for anything less. Delivered entirely in Spanish, Empress Of’s confidence-dripping delivery is complimented by a bass-heavy, sultry beat. If “Femenine” is setting the tone for what’s to come, then this next era is sure to be Empress Of’s most unwavering yet. – Lyndsey Havens

Lyn Lapid, “July”

Rising pop artist Lyn Lapid pulled an unusual, though clever move with her latest single, “July.” On the airy track, she fitting recalls a summer romance — at a time when many in the states are approaching the dead of winter. As a result, a song so new feels so familiar, which is also credited to lyrics that allude to being 17, drinking out of solo cups and spilling secrets — essentially a starter pack for a teen approaching the next phase of their life, not yet knowing what they will soon be missing. – L.H.

Delilah Montagu, “Coffee”

L.A. based singer songwriter Delilah Montagu has been releasing music since 2019, but her profile has grown drastically in the past year thanks in large part to dance phenom Fred Again… and his track “Delilah (Pull Me Out Of This),” on which Montagu features. “Coffee” shows a softer side in comparison, with the artist building upon her own harmonies and looped drum beat, resulting in a gorgeous and intimate track about the simple side of love, like — as the title suggests — bringing a partner coffee. – L.H.

Ally Brooke & Dinah Jane, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”

The holiday season has brought a delightful mini-Fifth Harmony reunion: Ally Brooke and Dinah Jane have linked back up a few years after their 5H days for a soothing rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” The accompanying music video finds the longtime friends goofing around in festive pajamas, while also showcasing the soulful vocals that has helped their group’s tunes endure. – Jason Lipshutz

Tiny Deaths, “Take the Bullet”

Singer-songwriter Claire de Lune has established herself as an NBA columnist, as well as spent time in an early 2010s group named The Chalice that also featured Lizzo; as Tiny Deaths, however, she flaunts a singular skill set, often operating over lilting pop arrangements. “Take the Bullet,” from new album Spirit of the Staircase, contains a percussive drive in addition to the ethereal production, as de Lune allows the instrumentation to stomp forward around her words. – J.L.

Mercury, “Woolgathering”

“I’m overthinking / Just because I’m not used to being alone,” Maddie Kerr wails on “Woolgathering,” a gargantuan indie-rock meditation on still feeling unsettled when everything is going your way. Nashville band Mercury pull out all the stops to give their new track some extra heft, and while Kerr’s voice matches the guitar avalanche, the subtle glitches in the production play into the theme of something amiss, and highlight the song. – J.L.

Nailah Hunter, “Strange Delights”

Need a pop song that celebrates the wonders of nature while also sounding like it was recorded outdoors? Nailah Hunter’s “Strange Delights” buzzes, caws and crows through the haze of its piano arrangement, with the Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist deploying her words sparingly; Hunter treats the song like a pastiche of sights and sounds meant to be remembered, and revels in the natural beauty. – J.L.

Ducks Ltd., “Hollowed Out”

In the music video for the excellent new single “Hollowed Out,” Ducks Ltd. singer-songwriter Tom McGreevy sings the effervescent hook straight at the camera with stone-faced earnestness, as if presenting his latest findings from the indie-pop lab. That chorus is going to provoke plenty of tour-date bounce-alongs in the near future, and Toronto duo’s upcoming album Harm’s Way should be considered one of the most anticipated of 2024 if the rest can match this level. – J.L.

Kaytranada feat. Rochelle Jordan, “Lover/Friend”

Wrapping up a highly successful 2023 with a double single, Kaytranada unveiled “Lover/Friend” with Rochelle Jordan and “Stuntin” with Channel Tres last week — and while “Stuntin” has its charm, the former track glows with an intoxicating rhythmic-pop urgency. Jordan exhales every syllable like she can’t wait to blurt out her passion, while Kaytranada bestows her with effortless dance-floor style, particularly on that finger-snapping breakdown. – J.L.

Middle Kids, “Bend”

Middle Kids’ “Bend” starts out innocently enough, with the Sydney trio’s Hannah Joy confessing, “I am one bend away from a break” — but then the production erupts, her voice soars skyward, and the pressure that Joy is singing about becomes literal. The rest of “Bend” is can’t-turn-away catharsis, and Middle Kids end up with an anthem for anyone who’s at the end of their rope. – J.L.
