Ado’s ‘Show’ Stays Atop Japan Hot 100 for 10th Week as tuki. Breaks Into Top 10 for First Time

Ado’s “Show” continues to rule the Billboard Japan Hot 100, now in its 10th week atop the list dated Dec. 6.

The enigmatic songstress has been ramping up exposure on terrestrial TV as the year-end festivities draw near, kicking off her string of appearances on NTV’s Best Artist 2023, a four-hour music extravaganza broadcast on Dec. 2 featuring some of this year’s biggest acts. She performed “Show” and “Tot Musica,” a track off the ONE PIECE FILM RED soundtrack onstage in an elaborate cage-like set, her face veiled in the shadows the entire time.

The USJ Halloween event theme is at No. 3 for downloads this week with 9,991 units, up 6 percent from the week before. Streaming and video views are on the decline but still at No. 1 — both down by about 7 percent with the former at 10,522,262 streams and the latter at 3,296,075 views. The track also comes in at No. 8 for karaoke and No. 38 for radio airplay.

The 21-year-old singer’s next scheduled TV appearance will be on the FNS Music Festival Day 1 on Wednesday (Dec. 6), where she is set to perform “Show” and “Ibara,” a song written by 23-year-old J-pop hitmaker Vaundy (whose “Kaiju no Hanauta,” by the way, is at No. 7 this week). As the song continues to hit terrestrial waves during the year-end and New Year’s holidays, it’ll be interesting to keep an eye on how the exposure will be reflected on the Japan charts.

=LOVE’s “Last Note shika shiranai” debuts at No. 3 this week. It’s the 15th single by the group produced by former AKB48 member Rino Sashihara, who also wrote the lyrics of this wistful love song about the lingering notes of a perfume. The track featuring youngest member, Kiara Saito (19), in center position of the choreography achieved the group’s best first-week CD sales with 256,835 copies (No. 1), about 7 percent higher than the 239,196 copies sold in the first week of the previous single, “Natsumatope.”

Following at No. 4 is KID PHENOMENON’s “Sonzai Shoumei” (“Proof of Existence”). The Exile Tribe boy band’s second single is featured as the ending theme for Season 2 of the new Rurouni Kenshin anime series. The track launches with 67,853 CDs — not quite reaching the 84,185 copies sold in the first week of the group’s debut single “Wheelie” — and bows at No. 2 for sales. It also hits No. 1 for radio this week.

“Bansanka” by tuki. entered the Japan Hot 100 top 10 for the first time at No. 8, giving the 15-year-old singer-songwriter her first-ever top 10 single. Points for both downloads and streaming for the track soared by about 113 percent from last week, the former climbing to No. 7 and the latter to No. 6. Video also rose by about 11 percent to hit No. 13, and karaoke is at No. 38 after gaining 7 percent. The overall increase in points indicates that the song’s popularity is gradually on the rise.

The Billboard Japan Hot 100 combines physical and digital sales, audio streams, radio airplay, video views and karaoke data.

The clip kicked off with the bubblegum pink-toned cover for her 2010 album, Pink Friday. “This is one of the most important shoots I’ve ever done,” Minaj shared. “What we were going for in this shoot was trying to make me look like a big Barbie doll. Once I saw the photo, I loved it, but I wanted the dress to be more poofy. […] They were like, ‘OK, let’s just draw on the extra lace behind you.’ We did it, and that’s the beauty of some of the best photoshoots, is that you don’t know what the heck you’re going to get and then you leave with something more gorgeous, beautiful and iconic.”

She then went through a number of other beloved looks, including various Fashion Week outfits, Met Gala styles, her Barbie film premiere look and her multiple Vogue covers. She also touched on her upcoming Pink Friday 2 cover. “Well, this made me light up,” she shared, noting that she’s wearing Vetements. “I just loved that it didn’t have to show any skin. I just loved that sometimes women are the most confident when they’re completely covered up.”

Minaj is just a day away from finally unveiling her highly anticipated fifth studio album, Pink Friday 2 on Dec. 8. “If you on my $h!t list, you will never EVER recover. The. Fkng. End,” she wrote to fans about the project last month.

Pink Friday 2 is the follow-up to Minaj’s 2018 album, Queen, which peaked at No. 2 on both the all-genre Billboard 200 albums chart and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart upon its release. The upcoming album’s predecessor, 2010’s Pink Friday, topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for six weeks and the Billboard 200 for one week.

Splice’s Year-End Data Reveals What Producers Are Into: Amapiano & Phonk Skyrocket, Trap Is Down

Music tech company Splice has partnered with Billboard to exclusively release key data about what sounds have trended among their usership over the last year. This is the first time the company has made their end-of-year data public.

Since its founding in 2013, Splice has offered music makers a constantly evolving sound library of millions of samples and loops for royalty-free use, ranging widely from kick drum to kopuz (a Turkish string lute) samples. Its sounds are widely used by producers of all sizes — from hobbyists in their bedrooms to the talents making Hot 100 hits with Justin Bieber, Bad Bunny, Taylor Swift and Travis Scott.

Splice has users in virtually every country around the world, but it is particularly popular in its top ten markets: U.S., U.K., Germany, Canada, France, Brazil, South Korea, Australia, Italy and India. 44% of its registered users identify as Gen Z.

To organize its ever-growing library, Splice uses a tagging system, adding genre and subgenre signifiers to help users find the sample they need. Some sounds have multiple genre tags. As the company’s creative director of Splice Sounds, Jay “Capsun” Pulman, explains, “when we have sample packs that are released that are tagged as K-pop, for instance, the vast majority of the time, they’ll be made by an artist, producer, or songwriter who is actively involved in K-pop in some way. They’re involved in that scene. The samples come out of the genre, as opposed to tagging every sound that could be used from Splice and made into K-pop.”

In sharing this data, Pulman, says the company can shine a light on the “very starting point of music making…It shows us the start point of where eventual trends bubble, even before getting to see [the trends] in mainstream hits.”

African Music

Most notably, downloads for sounds tagged as “amapiano,” a South African dance music genre often featuring log drums, are up 826% year-over-year. Its searches are up 309%, and it is trending in 17 cities. In Los Angeles, the highest trending city for the genre, its growth is up 1,003% year-over-year. It is also popular among Atlanta producers, surging 956% in the city this year.

According to Pulman, the discrepancy in downloads versus searches for amapiano suggests that users might not know to look up this nascent genre by name through their search bar. However, they’re still gravitating towards it when it’s featured in other ways on the site. On the Splice home page, the Splice team often creates groupings of sounds for different genres, moods and other categories to entice users to download sounds.

In the last year, African music has become popular on the Billboard charts as stars from the continent like Rema, Burna Boy, and Tems, crossed over into the American mainstream. “Calm Down” by Rema, with an assist from popstar Selena Gomez, peaked at No. 3 this year on the Hot 100 and even made the difficult move to No. 1 on the pop radio airplay chart for five straight weeks. In an acknowledgment of African music’s growth, Billboard launched a dedicated U.S. Afrobeats chart in association with Afro Nation, and Billboard reporters Heran Mamo and Dan Rys frequently cover the latest in the genre with their monthly roundup, Afrobeats Fresh Picks.

Amapiano’s growth on Splice represents the continued proliferation of African music globally. To further fuel growth in trending genres, Pulman says Splice’s Sounds team watches their data carefully and hires musicians native to those genres to amass more authentic samples for the platform to offer its users.

Meanwhile, sounds that are tagged as “afrobeats” or “afropop” have declined by 45%, particularly in African metropolises like Lagos, Nigera. Splice believes this is because “users want authentic sounds from more specific Afro genres rather than generic samples that fall under a larger umbrella.”

Hip-Hop / Rap

Hip-hop remains the most popular genre on Splice, accounting for 19% of total downloads. Still, the genre is down 11% from 2022. This may foreshadow continued difficulties for hip-hop music on the charts. This year was widely considered to be an especially stagnant year for the highly-streamed genre, and that was reflected on the Billboard charts: August 2023 marked a full year since a rap song had been No. 1 on the Hot 100 – the first time this has happened in 23 years.

Splice has found that downloads of trap sounds are down by 14% globally since last year, even in the genre’s birthplace of Atlanta, where those downloads fell by 20%. (Meanwhile, Atlanta saw a 50% growth in techno downloads, a 21% growth in dubstep, and a 20% growth in soul).

Still, 86% of Splice users downloaded a hip-hop sample in 2023, and 57% of Splice users told the company in a recent survey that hip-hop interests them most when searching for samples. Pulman adds that producers who are making hip-hop, for example, might use sounds tagged as other genres in eventually creating hip-hop songs.

Phonk

This year, Splice introduced a tag for phonk music, and so far, the genre has seen growth of 1,246% year-over-year to more than 1 million downloads since the tag first became available. (This percentage is available because Splice says it has retroactively applied the “phonk” tag to older sounds in its catalog, created prior to the tag). Phonk samples are trending primarily in cities like Los Angeles, Tokyo, Berlin, Chicago, and Seoul. The new genre, which sounds like slowed down Memphis rap samples set to lo-fi beats, is especially well-known among gamers and car enthusiasts who are passionate about “drifting.” It is often used by those communities to soundtrack their social media videos. While phonk still isn’t well-known among the general public, it’s gained a much wider reach this year, thanks in part to its inclusion on the latest Fast and Furious mixtape, which was released alongside the franchise’s 10th movie earlier this year.

Electronic / Dance

Dance music genres saw a comeback this year on Splice. The company says drum & bass was one of the fastest growing genres this year, ranking as the 10th most downloaded genre in 2023 with 85% growth year-over-year. Jersey Club, a fast-paced subgenre that fuses elements of house and rap, also saw major growth with a 178% increase in downloads year-over-year. It’s trending in Nashville and six other cities.

Sounds tagged as “U.K. garage” are trending in nine cities Pulman says that while “it’s a fairly niche genre, it has made its way into larger genres like K-pop, for instance.” It also made its mark on Western pop through the work of PinkPantheress.

Various subgenres of house are also growing in popularity on Splice. Downloads for house samples are up 27% overall, and searches for the genre are up 17%.

K-Pop

Sounds tagged as “K-pop” have declined 17.97% on Splice in 2023, but the company states that this “may not be indicative of the genre itself declining,” given that K-pop is an amalgamation of various influences spanning from U.K. garage to trap.

In Seoul, the epicenter of the K-pop industry, Splice has seen sounds from amapiano, phonk, Jersey club, Baltimore club, U.K. garage and big room house trend in the last year.

Latin

Despite breakout stars like Peso Pluma and Grupo Frontera hitting the charts this year, Splice has not seen a notable uptick in the use of regional Mexican samples, including the subgenres ranchera, norteño, banda and mariachi. Splice says this is likely because most regional Mexican music makers do not heavily rely on sampling.

Reggaeton sounds saw 23% growth in downloads year-over-year, making it the 29th most downloaded genre on the platform. Reggaeton’s top city on the platform is Los Angeles, where the genre grew 26% year-over-year.

Sounds tagged as “baile funk,” or “funk carioca,” has also grown this year by 107% globally. This is likely thanks to exposure on TikTok with viral hits like “Automotivo Bibi Fogosa” by Bibi Babydoll, Dj Brunin XM, and KZA Produções and “Tuburao Te Amo” by Dj LK da Escócia, Tchakabum and MC Ryan SP. Downloads for the genre have grown especially quickly in Sao Paulo (92%), Mumbai (179%), Tokyo (81%), and Guadalajara (888%).

Country

Country music is not considered a sample heavy genre, but it is still growing among Splice users. Over the last year, Splice saw downloads for sounds tagged as “country” grow by 67%, while searches are up 21%. This mirrors the genre’s growth on the Hot 100 this year as country hitmakers like Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, Jason Aldean and Zach Bryan became mainstream stars.

Famous Football Fans: Musicians Stuntin’ on the Sidelines

Music and sports are some of the world’s biggest industries. The two have long had a symbiotic relationship, especially in the United States, where everything is bigger and, well, louder – and doubly so where American football is concerned.

What would Sunday Night Football be, for instance, without its famous theme song? What would players do without their hype tracks, or halftime shows without live music? Music is an essential part of football season.  Plus, some of the biggest artists in the world often perform in the exact stadiums where teams kick off.

But the mutual love between football and music goes beyond the macro scale. Musicians, at the end of the day, are just like anyone else. Many of them are just as much a hardcore NFL fan as the next American, with a passion for their home team that runs almost as deep as their love for their craft.

That’s why it’s nothing out of the ordinary to see famous musicians turn up at pro and college football games. The Super Bowl is an unofficial yearly gathering of some of the world’s biggest celebrities, including singers, songwriters and rappers – and not just the ones performing the national anthem or at the annual Super Bowl Halftime Show concert. And the spotlight is always just as much on Taylor Swift watching games from her seat in Arrowhead Stadium as it is on Travis Kelce playing on the field whenever the pop star attends a Kansas City Chiefs game, she and the tight end having struck up an all-American romance in 2023.

Everyone from Justin Bieber to Jay-Z, Miley Cyrus to Jon Bon Jovi has cropped up on the sidelines to enjoy some good old-fashioned football over the years. Keep scrolling to see photos of various musicians on the sidelines below.

50 Cent Says His Diddy Documentary’s Proceeds To Go To Sex Assault Victims

50 Cent is making a documentary on the recent lawsuits against Diddy—and will donate proceeds of the film to sexual assault victims.

As news of a fourth lawsuit filed against Diddy for alleged sexual assault has the public buzzing, 50 Cent is on the offensive by announcing the production of a documentary about the embattled music mogul. On Wednesday (December 6), the rapper shared a clip of former Bad Boy Records artist Mark Curry on camera alleging how Diddy aka Sean Combs would spike bottles of Moet champagne and serve them specifically to women who attended his parties.

When contacted by Entertainment Tonight, a representative for 50 Cent aka Curtis Jackson and G-Unit Film and TV confirmed that the documentary was in production. “I can confirm that the untitled ‘Diddy’ documentary is in development through G-Unit Film and Television with Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson serving as Executive Producer, proceeds from this documentary that G-Unit Film & Television receives will go to victims of sexual assault and rape,” the representative said in a statement.

50 Cent has been vocal about Diddy’s alleged misdeeds for quite some time, from trolling the “Can I Live” rapper about allegedly being behind the murder of Tupac Shakur to offering to buy the Revolt TV network after the mogul stepped down in the wake of the sexual abuse lawsuit against him by his former flame, Cassie Ventura. But the clip posted on Instagram also contained a veiled shot at Rick Ross, seen through a clip of Diddy with Ross at an event that was interspersed with Ross’s infamous lyrics from his “U.O.E.N.O.” track with Rocko from 2013: “Put Molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it/I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it.”

The latest lawsuit against Diddy alleges that he and others including Bad Boy Records exec Harve Pierre participated in a “gang rape” of the victim, who was 17, in 2003.  On Wednesday, Diddy posted a statement to his own Instagram account. “For the last couple of weeks, I have sat silently and watched people try to assassinate my character, destroy my reputation and my legacy,” he wrote. “Sickening allegations have been made against me by individuals looking for a quick payday. Let me (be) absolutely clear: I did not do any of the awful things being alleged. I will fight for my name, my family and for the truth.”

Nike Rumored To Be Parting Ways With Tiger Woods

After more than a quarter century, the business relationship between Tiger Woods and Nike seems to be coming to an end.

According to Front Office Sports, Nike seems to be ready to move on from Tiger Woods as the man’s career on the golf course is winding down, and his retirement seems inevitable. Having signed to Nike back in 1996 when he was only 20 years old (God, time flies), the Swoosh brand has put hundreds of millions of dollars in the iconic golfer’s bank account over the decades, but it seems like that lucrative relationship is about to wrap up sooner than later.

Per Front Office Sports:

On Monday, the “No Laying Up” golf podcast – which in the past has provided early insight into major shake-ups in pro golf, such as defections from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf – reported that next week’s PNC Championship could be Woods’s last tournament wearing the Swoosh.

NLU also reported similar rumblings about other Nike golf athletes — a roster that includes Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, and Scottie Scheffler — based on the idea that an existing golf equipment manufacturer is potentially creating an apparel brand. Since Nike stopped manufacturing clubs in 2016, Wood has used clubs from TaylorMade, which sells some golf apparel but doesn’t have as vast a collection as Nike.

Since returning from ankle surgery in 2022, Woods has notably played golf tournaments wearing FootJoy shoes.

We’re not gonna lie, this isn’t devastating anyone on our side of things. We can’t remember the last time we were hype for the latest Tiger Woods Nike collection to drop, but then again, we don’t be out on the golf course like that… or ever.

Who Nike has in mind to carry on their golf apparel is anyone’s guess, but best believe we won’t be turning up whenever a new face of their golfing franchise is announced. Maybe if they brought back Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore character we’d be slightly interested to see what they have coming down the pike. Just sayin’.

What do y’all think of Nike and Tiger Woods ending their partnership? Let us know in the comments section below.

Still Bad Blood: Taylor Swift Opens Up About Leaked Kanye West Phone Call, Says It Was A “Fully Manufactured Frame Job”

HipHopWired Featured Video

Taylor Swift Opens Up About Kanye West Recording

Time Person of the Year Taylor Swift still has plenty to say about that fiasco between herself, Kanye West, and his then-wife Kim Kardashian.

There is still bad blood between Swift, Ye, and his ex-wife. In her Time Person of the Year interview, the “Shake It Off” singer opened up about the leaked phone conversation between herself and the antisemitic rapper in which he asked for permission to say her name in the 2016 track “Famous” off his very meh album, DONDA.

On the song, the artist, who now is called Ye, rapped, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/ Why? I made that bitch famous.” Swift claimed she had no idea the Chicago rapper would say the latter part of those lyrics after the song dropped.

West and his then-wife, Kim Kardashian, claimed that Swift was all on board with the tasteless bars.

Kim K took things further by dropping an edited video featuring the phone call between Ye and Swift, showing the singer approving the lyrics.

In the interview with Time, Swift said it felt like a “fully manufactured frame job.”

“[It was] an illegally recorded phone call, which Kim Kardashian edited and then put out to say to everyone that I was a liar,” Swift said.

Adding, “Make no mistake — my career was taken away from me… I thought that moment of backlash was going to define me negatively for the rest of my life.”

Swift Believes Karma Will Deal With Her Foes

Swift had to move to another country because everyone sided with the rapper and his wife, returning to the spotlight with her 2017 album Reputation.

“That took me down psychologically to a place I’ve never been before. I moved to a foreign country, “Swift told Time. “I didn’t leave a rental house for a year. I was afraid to get on phone calls.”

“I pushed away most people in my life because I didn’t trust anyone anymore,” adding, “I went down really, really hard.”

Good for her.

Swift is now living her best life with her new boo, Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Champion tight end Travis Kelce while continuing to rake in tons of cash from her most recent tour, latest album, and concert film.
