Here’s Every Hot 100 Year-End No. 1 Song, From 1958 to 2023

Billboard has been publishing weekly rankings in one form or another for over a century.

Early in the 1900s, Billboard published charts detailing the popularity of sheet music in the U.S. In July 1940, Billboard unveiled its first chart ranking the sales of recorded songs, the 10-position “National List of Best Selling Retail Records,” with Bing Crosby, Jimmy Dorsey and Glenn Miller among its ranks.

Billboard expanded its number of weekly charts over the next few years, starting recaps for R&B in 1942 and country in 1944. In March 1956, the weekly Billboard 200 albums chart premiered (at just 10 positions deep). Two years later, in August 1958, the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart began.

At the end of 1958, Billboard printed a recap of the year’s biggest songs for the first time (that year also encompassed songs’ performance on pre-Hot 100 charts leading up to the list’s August launch). Domenico Modugno’s “Volare (Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu)” finished as Billboard‘s first year-end No. 1 Hot 100 song. The track, which spent five total weeks at No. 1, became the second song to top the weekly Hot 100, after Ricky Nelson’s “Poor Little Fool.”

Also in the 1958 year-end issue, Billboard continued its tradition of surveying the music industry via “The Billboard Eleventh Annual Disc Jockey Poll,” which “Volare” also crowned. “[The song] was really a left-field hit … one of the few disks in recent years with a non-English lyric to reach the top,” Billboard wrote at the time. In 2023, such hits are plentiful, as seven non-English language songs reached the top 10 alone during the year — the most ever in a calendar year. Thus, this line from that 1958 issue proved prophetic, given the sonic, and geographic, scope of that year’s, and this year’s, biggest titles: “The preference in tunes indicates that no one type of song or artist reigns supreme among jockeys. The list also includes several types of songs with many extremes, ranging from an old folk song to European, Latin American and tunes by American cleffers.”

Jumping to the latest year-end Hot 100 Songs ranking — with the weekly chart now blending streaming, radio airplay and sales data — Morgan Wallen’s 16-week No. 1 “Last Night” finished as 2023’s top track. It’s the first single that topped the Hot Country Songs chart to wrap at No. 1 since Faith Hill’s “Breathe” in 2000, and the first by a male artist since Johnny Horton’s “The Battle of New Orleans” in 1959.

Today, Billboard not only has the year-end Hot 100 Songs ranking, but also annual recaps for all 200-plus weekly charts, reflecting chart performance of songs, albums, artists and more over a 12-month tracking period.

From “Volare” to “Last Night” and every top title in between, here’s a look at every year-end No. 1 Hot 100 single since 1958, as published in each year-end Billboard issue.

Today I’m joined by Billboard Deputy Editor Rob Levine and Primary Wave CEO/founder Larry Mestel to discuss the music license market, from A.I. to international markets and everything in between.

Larry is the founder and CEO of Primary Wave Music, and has been working in the music and entertainment industry for over 30 years. In 2006. Mr. Mestel took his extensive experience working at multiple record labels and founded Primary Wave Music, one of the largest independent music publishing, marketing and talent management companies in the United States. Primary Wave controls over 50,000 songs from catalogs of legendary artists such as Bob Marley, Stevie Nicks, The Four Seasons, Whitney Houston, James Brown — I can continue to go on and on and on. Obviously, he’s a very important man in this industry. So with that being said, gentlemen, thank you for being here with me.

Detroit Promoter The Right Productions Open Home for Unhoused Artists

Detroit promoter and entertainment provider The Right Productions has teamed up with health and human service agency Neighborhood Service Organization to provide housing for artists in need. To help alleviate the issue of chronic issues of homelessness the two entities have launched the Tommy Garrett House as a solution for the local artistic community in Detroit.

Located on the northwest side of Detroit, the Tommy Garrett House is a three-bedroom, 1,920-square-foot home designed to house six artists at a time. Named after the internationally acclaimed singer, songwriter and recording artist Tommy Garrett, who overcame homelessness with NSO’s support, this house aims to foster a nurturing environment for artists to live, build stability and create work safely in the heart of Detroit.

“Addressing the complex issue of homelessness is challenging. More than 1,500 people in Detroit experience homelessness on any given night. Despite nearly 6,000 households accessing housing assistance in 2022, a significant number are not officially considered homeless, but they lack access to safe and stable housing, resulting in a continuous cycle of transition,” said NSO president and CEO Linda Little in a release.

Little added that NSO’s collaboration with The Right Productions started when both entities conceptualized and hosted the inaugural Community of Hope concert featuring R&B artists Maxwell and Tamia. The Community of Hope inaugural concert, also hosted by the City of Detroit, took place in July of this year to energize, inspire and foster a community-wide drive to address the challenges faced by the unhoused and their families in metro Detroit. Funds raised from the Concert of Hope event were allocated to address homelessness by supporting housing and services tailored to the needs of the unhoused individuals, including those within metro Detroit’s creative community.

“The overrepresentation of Black individuals among the homeless population, the prevalence of domestic violence and the median length of 69 days for homelessness highlight the challenge, emphasizing the need for comprehensive, long-term and affordable solutions, such as initiatives focused on permanent housing,” said Little. “The Tommy Garrett House was created to do just that for local artists.”

President and CEO of The Right Productions Shahida Mausi added: “Sometimes you see a need and wish you had the ability to address it. I had long wanted a way to provide housing and support services for artists of many genres. Having worked with artists for my entire career, I’ve seen the gaps in financial and mental health services in the creative community. I dreamt of a place where creative people could feel supported and cared for during difficult times. I shared my dream with Linda Little at NSO, who has the expertise to bring a dream into reality.”

In addition to the Tommy Garrett House, the second annual Community of Hope is scheduled for Aug. 2-4 at Detroit’s Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre, which The Right Productions runs. The event will feature two evenings of inspiration and performances by various musical artists including headliner Kem. Efforts will also be made to connect the unhoused population in metro Detroit with community organizations that offer a comprehensive range of wraparound resources and will engage a colloquium of stakeholders.

Rihanna Reveals Her Biggest Fashion ‘Ick’ & Addresses New Music Rumors

Rihanna chatted about two of her biggest muses — fashion and music — at Monday night’s (Dec. 18) Fenty x Puma event.

The event took place at NeueHouse in Los Angeles, celebrating the launch of Ri’s newest collaborative shoe design with the shoe brand. The mogul has long been a trendsetter with her boundary-pushing style, and on the red carpet Monday, she revealed what her biggest fashion no-no is.

“My biggest fashion ick?” she told HypeBeast. “There’s no one thing. I feel like when you see something that’s inauthentic for someone, it’s blatant, it’s blaring — I hate that. It’s forced.”

“That turns me off,” she added.

And of course, a media event with Rihanna wouldn’t be complete without the “Umbrella” singer dodging questions about new music. When asked by another interviewer about whether she plans to release a long-awaited followup to her 2016 album ANTI next year, she simply said, “I can’t tell you everything, girl” before hinting with a smirk, “It’s giving crystal ball.”

The comment comes almost two months after rumors emerged that Ri has plans to drop new music in 2024. A few outlets reported in October that the star had signed a deal with Live Nation for a world tour coinciding with new music; however, Billboard was told shortly afterward that the reports were “bogus” and found that Live Nation had not placed any holds on venues for a potential trek.

“No tour has been confirmed for Rihanna,” a high-level source added at the time.

Pacha Group Acquired By FIVE: CEO Aloki Batra Reveals Plans For Ibiza Clubbing Institution Amid $330M Deal

One of Ibiza‘s most fabled clubbing institutions is under new ownership.

As was rumored this past summer, Pacha Group — which includes the Ibiza flagship club, two hotel island hotel properties and clubs in Barcelona and Munich — has been acquired by FIVE Holdings, the Dubai-based hospitality and real estate group. FIVE encompasses a namesake hotel brand with two locations in Dubai and a property in Zurich, with a third Dubai property currently under construction.

FIVE Hospitality and The Pacha Group CEO Aloki Batra tells Billboard that FIVE’s acquisition of The Pacha Group is worth approximately $330 million, and that conversations regarding the sale started nearly two and a half years ago at an event in Mykonos.

The Pacha Group was previously owned by the private equity firm Trilantic Capital Partners, which acquired the brand in 2017. A representative from Trilantic declined to comment on the sale.

Batra says that as part of the transfer of ownership, Pacha Ibiza will see some light changes, including improvements to the lighting system, slightly expanded VIP areas, enhanced production elements and improvements to the club’s “digital footprint” including systems to track attendance through NFT wristbands.

“If [you’ve] been to been to five or six shows, the next time you show up, we should know that. Now it’s just blind,” says Batra. “[We plan to] increase the quality of experience by getting to know our fans a lot better and then [determining] how we can engage with them and make them feel special.” Batra adds that there’s been a “full continuity” of staff at the club amid the change in ownership.

Batra says FIVE is also looking at ways to revive the club’s longstanding record label, Pacha Recordings with pre-recorded DJ sets delivered to fans globally on DSPs.

“[We’re] definitely looking at that that very seriously,” Batra says. “We have this rich legacy and need to take it ahead for the digital age and the customer of today. I think that’s a huge opportunity for us, and it’s great for the fans, because we intend to bring your favorite club closer to you.”

While programming at the club will remain largely the same — including Solomun’s iconic Sunday night residency — Batra says the plan is to also make offerings “a bit more reggaeton-ey” for the 2024 season. “There’s a lot of demand for it and we’re looking to address that demand,” he says, noting that Maluma and J Balvin have previously performed at Pacha Ibiza. “We want to be well represented in the reggaeton world… We think there’s definitely a trend in that direction.”

The acquisition marks FIVE’s first properties in Ibiza, with the deal also encompassing the resorts El Hotel Pacha Ibiza and Destino Pacha Ibiza. Located approximately 15 minutes north of the club, this latter property will see a series of what Batra calls “significant upgrades” and officially become a FIVE branded property in 2025.

He says that while the Ibiza market is highly competitive, visitors to the island now often come more and stay longer, creating opportunities for property owners. He adds that the same demographic that visits FIVE resorts in Dubai are also likely to travel to Ibiza.

Pacha Ibiza opened in 1973 and, 50 years later, hosts some of the biggest DJs in the world. Batra emphasize that while other clubs in the market offer “a show with a big DJ set” Pacha is still focused on throwing “a party with the DJ right at the center.”

To wit, FIVE will maintain Pacha’s ” bohemian artistic direction…[The plan is] not more pyrotechnics as far as we’re concerned,” says Batra. “We’re more about the party, the atmosphere and enhancing that experience [and not having] people pull out their mobile phones for the entirety of the set.”

“We’re buying into a real legacy,” Batra adds. “It’s one of the greatest entertainment brands out of Europe at the forefront of dance music and culture. The relationship between the success of Ibiza and the success of Pacha is very intertwined; I think it’s almost a definitive story of Ibiza… So it’s very exciting to have an opportunity to be part of this great story and navigate it into a blissful future.”

Which ‘The Voice’ Finalist Should Win Season 24? Watch the Finale Performances & Vote

Season 24 of The Voice is officially down to its final hours, as the live finale airs on Tuesday (Dec. 19). The first part of the finale aired on NBC on Monday, and features the remaining five contestants battling it out for the title of this season’s champion.

Coach Gwen Stefani is out of the running for winning the crown this season, as Lila Forde (Team Legend), Huntley (Team Niall), Ruby Leigh (Team Reba), Mara Justine (Team Niall) and
Jacquie Roar (Team Reba) have made it all the way to the final episode of the competition, leaving the No Doubt frontwoman without a singer in the finals. The final group gives former One Direction member not one, but two chances at taking home the win.

The remaining five each sang two songs on Monday night to try to turn the odds in their favor: Forde gave her take on bands of yesteryear with renditions on The Band’s “The Weight and The Beatles’ “Across the Universe,” while Mara Justine gave her all in powerhouse covers of Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart” and Adele’s heartbreaking “Turning Tables.”

Roar also delivered solid rendition of throwback tracks “More Than a Feeling” by Boston and “Nights in White Satin” by The Moody Blues, while Huntley went the rock and indie route with renditions of Creed’s “Higher” and Tom Odell’s “Another Love.” Leigh used her final chance to breathe new life into Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds” and the Eagles’ “Desperado.”

The Voice season 24 finale airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, with coaches Niall Horan, John Legend, Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani will perform “Let It Snow” ahead of the holidays. Jelly Roll, Tyla, Earth, Wind & Fire, AJR, Keith Urban and season 25 coaches Dan + Shay will also perform during the finale event.

Insomniac Games Showered With Support After Stolen Data Hits X

Source: Insomniac Games / Marvel’s Wolverine

Hacks are wack… PERIOD. The gaming community is rallying around Insomniac Games after files were stolen from their highly anticipated Marvel’s Wolverine game and other highly-sensitive information hit the web.

Full disclaimer: HHW Gaming stands in solidarity with Insomniac Games and other game studios and will not share any links to stolen material.

With that out of the way, leading up to last night’s unfortunate events, Rhysida, a ransomware group, demanded $2.3 million from Insomniac Games, the studio behind PlayStation-exclusive titles like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Miles Morales and more.

According to Cyber Daily, after Insomniac Games did not meet Rhysida’s ridiculous demands, the ransomware group leaked 1.67 terabytes of data comprising over 1.3 million stolen files.

The files included level design and character information from Marvel’s Wolverine. Internal company presentations leaked Insomniac Games and Sony’s unannounced games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, Venom, an X-Men game, and, unsurprisingly, a new Ratchet & Clank game.

There were also screenshots of internal spreadsheets with other information on development and budgets.

The leak of the Insomniac Games employee’s personal information made this hack even more egregious.

Insomniac Games joined the growing list of other game studios that also experienced hacks. Rockstar Games saw early development footage of GTA 6 leak, Cyberpunk 2077, and The Witcher: Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt Red, Bandai Namco, and Riot Games.

The Gaming Community Denounced The Hacks On Social Media

While thirsty folks eager to feast their eyes on Insomniac’s Wolverine game circled the stolen material like hungry vultures on rotting flesh, the gaming community rallied around the studio to denounce the leaks.

“Leaks are scary, frustrating, damaging and often happen without consent or any planning,” one user on X, formerly Twitter, wrote.

Our sympathies to @insomniacgames and all the affected team members. After all the effort and dedication they have poured into their games, they didn’t deserve this. No one does. The hackers also leaked employee’s personal information, which is truly disgraceful and shameful,” Alan Wake 2 developer Remedy wrote on its official X account.

Add us to the list of people who feel for Insomniac Games and all of the other studios who were victims of bored losers who had nothing better to do with their computer skills.

Some of today’s biggest stars in every musical genre have posed for cover stories, magazine features and Billboard events throughout the year, including Billboard Women in Music, Billboard Country Power Players and Billboard Latin Music Week. Meanwhile, the vintage-inspired Lana Del Rey Women in Music cover photos, shot at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, won best feature photos at the ceremony. “The excellent, offbeat Billboard photo of singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey reclining in the back of a station wagon gives an air of mystery to it,” the judge noted of the black-and-white snaps, which accompanied Del Rey being honored with the Visionary Award at the 2023 Billboard Women in Music Awards.

Celine Dion’s Sister Says Singer Has ‘No Control Over Her Muscles’ Due to Stiff-Person Syndrome

Celine Dion‘s sister has given a sad update about the singer’s health.

As Celine continues battling Moersch-Woltman syndrome, also known as stiff-person syndrome, the “My Heart Will Go On” vocalist now has “no control of her muscles,” according to Claudette Dion. “She works hard,” Claudette told French publication 7 Jours, per CBS News. “What makes me sad, is that she was also so disciplined.”

She added that the hope is for the Grammy winner to be able to return to the stage, though the state in which she’d do so is unclear. “The vocal cords are muscles, but so is the heart,” said Claudette. “That’s what gets to me. Because it’s one in a million case, scientists don’t have that much research on the topic, because it didn’t affect that many people.”

Billboard has reached out to “The Power of Love” singer’s rep for comment.

Celine revealed in December 2022 that she’d been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, a rare condition marked by uncontrolled and severe spasms that sometimes caused her difficulties walking and using her vocal cords appropriately. She was ultimately forced to cancel her planned tour dates earlier this year.

In the fall, she made her first public appearance in more than three years, attending a hockey game with her three sons in Las Vegas to support her hometown team, the Montreal Canadiens. After the game, she posed for photos and chatted with the team.

Just one week later, the hitmaker attended Katy Perry’s Las Vegas residency.  The “Firework” singer gave the superstar a shoutout from the stage, telling fans, “Katy Perry, if you’re wondering. I’m not Celine Dion. That show is coming up next!”
