Smashing Pumpkins Looking for a Guitarist — And Holding Open Auditions

Calling all Smashing Pumpkins fans: You have a chance to become a member of the band.

On Friday (Jan. 5), the rock band took to Instagram to announce an open audition process to replace former guitarist Jeff Schroeder — meaning anyone, including fans, can apply.

“The Smashing Pumpkins are in search an additional guitarist. The application process is open to anyone who might be interested. Applicants may submit a resume and related materials to: SPGuitar@redlightmanagement.com,” the post reads.

The band — which currently consists of founding members Billy Corgan, James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin — lost their guitarist when Schroeder exited in October after a 16-year stint with the band. In his farewell statement, Schroeder revealed that joining the band happened when he least expected it.

“It’s easy to say now that when I joined The Smashing Pumpkins in 2007 I had no idea what I was getting into. The opportunity seemed to have come out of nowhere,” he recalled. “I was at UCLA working on my doctorate in comparative literature when a close friend messaged me and said The Smashing Pumpkins were looking for a guitar player. Being a huge fan of the band, the audition was something I threw myself into. It was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life.”

He continued, “The amount of incredible memories created over the last 16 years with the band are almost too numerous to quantify. Although it was a very difficult decision to make, I’ve decided to leave the band to make some space to explore a slightly different path. I want to thank Billy, Jimmy, James, and Jack for being both wonderful bandmates and even better friends. I will absolutely miss sharing the stage with you. I wish the band all the success in the future. I will be watching and listening.”

Smashing Pumpkins has a few months to get acclimated to whomever joins the band: The group is scheduled to head back on the road for their European tour beginning June 7 and will head Stateside in support of on Green Day’s Saviors Tour scheduled to kick off July 29 in Washington, D.C.

Paramore’s Atlantic Records Contract Is Up, Making the Band a Free Agent

On Friday (Jan. 5), the band’s fans began expressing concern online upon noticing that its website and socials had been wiped clean. As a source confirms to Billboard, the fresh start follows the expiration of the band’s 20-year contract with Atlantic Records in late December, meaning the Hayley Williams-fronted group is now a free agent.

The contract expiration was first reported by Variety.

Paramore’s sixth album, This Is Why, was released last February and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Ahead of its release, frontwoman Hayley Williams spoke on the fact that the album would complete its deal with Atlantic and added: “We’ve been really lucky. We always will have gripes — it’s an industry — but we know that we’ve been really lucky. It’s more just the fact that it’s time to f—ing finish something. And it’s time to know that we’re not doing the same s— that we’ve been on since we were teenagers. It’s just going to feel so nice to start a new book. You know, like no more chapters of this one. Whole new book. And I’m excited.”

Paramore hit the scene in 2005 with its debut album, All We Know Is Falling. All six of the band’s albums have hit the Billboard 200, with its self-titled fourth release topping the tally. On the Hot 100, the band has charted 11 songs, including one top 10 with “Ain’t It Fun” (released as the last single off Paramore).

Amidst the scrubbing of its website and social accounts, Paramore announced it had canceled an upcoming festival appearance. Though its Instagram account was wiped, the band posted a statement on Instagram Stories Thursday (Jan. 4) that read: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, Paramore can no longer attend and perform at iHeartRadio ALTer EGO on January 13. The band apologizes for any inconvenience.”

Paramore is still set to join Taylor Swift on her upcoming U.K. and European Eras Tour dates. The nearly 50 shows are scheduled for May through August.

Michael Bolton Recovering From Surgery to Remove Brain Tumor

Michael Bolton is recovering from surgery to remove a brain tumor.

On Friday afternoon (Jan. 5), the legendary crooner posted on his Instagram account, “Just before the holidays, it was discovered that I had a brain tumor, which required immediate surgery. Thanks to my incredible medical team, the surgery was a success. I am now recuperating at home and surrounded by the tremendous love and support of my family.”

Bolton has a number of 2024 tour dates on his website, starting Feb. 1 in Florida and running through Dec. 22. Many of those dates will be rescheduled as he recuperates.

“For the next couple of months, I will be devoting my time and energy to my recovery which means I’ll have to take a temporary break from touring,” he continued. “It is always the hardest thing for me to ever disappoint my fans or postpone a show, but have no doubt I am working hard to accelerate my recovery and get back to performing soon.”

Bolton, who scored eight No. 1s on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart in the ’90s, experienced a career resurgence a decade ago, when he joined forces with comedy trio The Lonely Island for a Saturday Night Live digital short on 2011’s “Jack Sparrow.” It showed Bolton in a different, humorous light. “I think I shocked a bunch of people who thought I would never do something like that. It’s too irreverent,” he told Billboard in a 2023 interview. “I love the Lonely Island guys and what they were doing with Saturday Night Live. They worked with me: They were patient to create something that has their brand all over it but wouldn’t be insulting to my audience.”

Celebrating his 50th year of making music last year, Bolton, 70, released Spark of Light in July, his first album of original material in 14 years.

Bolton, who appeared on The Masked Singer last year, concluded his post with an upbeat message: “I am beyond grateful for all the love and support you have so generously shown me through the years. Know that I’m keeping your positive messages in my heart, and I’ll give you more updates as soon as I can. Much love always, MB.”

Dionne Warwick Denies Involvement in Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Campaign Fundraiser: ‘Lie About Something Cool’

Dionne Warwick is looking to put false reports to rest.

The “Walk On By” singer took to X this week to clear up a report from Daily Mail that claimed she — alongside Andrea Bocelli, actor Martin Sheen and boxer Mike Tyson — was scheduled to appear at a campaign fundraiser for Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Warwick’s response was to a Daily Mail post on X that read: “Superstar tenor @AndreaBocelli will perform at fundraiser for US presidential hopeful @RobertKennedyJr with ‘well wisher’ guests including Martin Sheen, @MikeTyson and @dionnewarwick.”

In response to the X post, Warwick wrote: “I don’t know anything about this event. I did not agree to it and I certainly won’t be there.” When a person in the comments responded “Damn Dionne I almost got my respect back for you,” she retorted, “That’s okay, baby. Keep it.”

In a follow-up X post — in which she shared a screenshot of the Daily Mail article — she wrote, “This is absolutely ridiculous. If you are going to lie on my name, at least lie about something cool. ‘Revealed: Dionne collaborates with Rihanna on new album…’”

Martin Sheen also shot down the Daily Mail report, asking his West Wing co-star Bradley Whitford to share a message to X on his behalf. “There’s a story going around saying that Martin Sheen is supporting @RobertKennedyJr for president,” Whitford posted. “The story is incorrect. Martin asked us to post this on his behalf. ‘I wholeheartedly support President Joe Biden and the democratic ticket in 2024. Sincerely, Martin Sheen.’”

Will Ad Revenue Improve in 2024? A New Survey Predicts a Rebound – But Not for Everyone

The modern music industry may run on subscriptions — streaming, satellite radio, Peloton, et al. — but it still depends greatly on the advertising business. Indeed, non-subscription-based streaming, along with social media and broadcast radio, continues to produce important royalties and licensing income for record labels and music publishers.

Unfortunately, 2023 was a lackluster year for advertising-based businesses, as brands held back due to economic pressures. The slowdown extended into the fourth quarter: Trade Desk, a digital advertising platform, warned in November that expectations for revenue growth in 2024 “may be premature.”

So, can people expect improvements in 2024? According to a new report by Mediaocean, the outlook is mixed: While some advertising-based businesses can expect more demand this year, others may not witness a rebound.

In November, Mediaocean surveyed nearly 1,100 marketers, ad agencies, media companies and tech platforms, among other companies, about how they expect to spend on various types of advertising in the coming year. The survey revealed that advertising dollars will continue to flee from legacy media — namely print and television — in favor of social media, digital display and video and connected TVs.

Social platforms such as TikTok top the list of predicted ad spending in 2024: 69% of respondents said they expect to increase their spend in 2024 on social media, while only 28% said they will maintain social media spending and just 3% plan to decrease spending. Social media has taken the biggest jump in the last two years. When surveyed at the end of 2021, 56% of respondents — 13 percentage points less than the latest survey — said they expected to spend more on social platforms, while the percentage of people who planned to maintain spending in 2022 was 10 percentage points higher at 38%.

Digital display and video advertising showed a similar breakdown to social media: 65% of respondents expect to increase, 30% plan to maintain and 5% expect to decrease their spending. Most respondents also expect to increase their spending for connected TV and search. These categories were little changed from the prior year.

Radio and audio advertising will fare about the same as last year: 24% of respondents expect to increase spending on radio and audio in 2024, down from 25% in 2023, while 54% of respondents plan to maintain their spending levels and 22% expect to decrease their spending. Going into 2023, 51% of respondents expected to maintain radio and audio spending and 24% planned to spend less. However, those numbers mark a distinct downward trend from 2022, when 61% of respondents said they expected to maintain radio ad spending while just 15% expected a reduction.

Given that data, radio companies that have both digital and broadcast businesses should fare better than those without a digital component – and they may already be seeing a recovery. Speaking at the Wells Fargo TMT Summit on November 29, iHeartMedia chairman and CEO Bob Pittman said the company’s digital advertising “seems to have already recovered” and that radio advertising will recover when brands see an economic recovery on the horizon. “Advertising tends to be a leading indicator,” he added. The same trend can be seen, albeit in a more negative direction, at Audacy, which faces a possible bankruptcy caused in part by lagging broadcast revenue: In the third quarter of 2023, spot and network advertising was down 8.9% year over year while digital revenue rose 3.4%.

TV advertising has taken the biggest fall over the last two years. Going into 2022, only 15% of respondents expected to spend less on local TV and 13% planned to spend less on national TV. Two years later, 33% expect to spend less on local TV and 27% expect to reduce spending on national TV.

Although audio streaming has eaten into the time people spend listening to radio, about 90% of Americans still listen to the radio each week. The same can’t be said for video, however, as video streaming has sharply reduced the audience for cable television. In the third quarter, the penetration rate of traditional pay TV — cable, telco and satellite — fell to 54.8% after those companies lost nearly 2 million subscribers, according to MoffettNathanson. That marks the lowest penetration rate since 1989.

That can be chalked up to the swift rise of video streaming platforms. In the third quarter, YouTube TV surpassed satellite company Dish Network to become the fourth-largest multi-channel video programming distributor. MoffetNathanson believes YouTube TV could surpass satellite company DirecTV for third place in less than a year.

Corey Taylor Announces Cancellation of Solo Tour Due to ‘Mental & Physical Health’

Corey Taylor has cancelled his previously announced North American solo tour.

The Slipknot frontman took to Instagram on Friday (Jan. 5) to reveal the news, citing struggles with his mental and physical health. “For the past several months my mental and physical health have been breaking down, and I reached a place that was unhealthy for my family and I,” he wrote in his statement. “I know this decision will come as a shock to some and may be regarded as unpopular by others – but after taking a hard look at where I am and where I was going, I need to pull myself back and be home with my family for the time being. Those of you who bought tickets and VIP packages for this upcoming run will get a full refund.”

The trek was scheduled to kick off on Feb. 3 in Toronto, Canada, and stretch through North American before concluding on March 3 in Omaha, Nebraska. Des Rocs and Jigsaw Youth were set as supporting acts.

Taylor completed European and North American tours in 2023 in support of his sophomore solo album, CMF2, which was released on September 15 under his own label imprint Decibel Cooper Recordings. With this album, Taylor told Audacy Check In that he “decided to up the stakes, the music is more expansive, there’s heavier stuff, there’s darker stuff it paints with the whole palate like the first album, but there’s not there, man. To me, it’s the best rock album of this year and next year. It’s that good.”

Ludacris response to Katt Williams

Source: @ludacris / Twitter

The fallout from Katt Williams’ explosive appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s podcast has compelled those whom he mentioned including Ludacris and Kevin Hart to respond.
Veteran comedian Katt Williams’ scorched-earth appearance as a guest on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast Wednesday (Jan. 3) shook up the Internet thanks to a plethora of jokes, wise observations, and of course, his pointed barbs at other notable comedians and entertainers beginning with Cedric the Entertainer and Steve Harvey. Ludacris and Kevin Hart were also called out with some inflammatory remarks. “In 15 years in Hollywood, no one in Hollywood has a memory of going to a sold-out Kevin Hart show, there being a line for him, ever getting a standing ovation at any comedy club,” Williams said.

The Emmy Award winner returned to jab Hart again with more detail, stating: “For a five-year period, every single movie that Kevin Hart did was a movie that had been on my desk that all I had said was just, ‘Can we take some of this Stepin Fetchit shit out and then I can do it,’” adding: “Yeah, it’s interesting, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Again, I’m on the winning side of these decisions.” Hart would respond on Friday via a post on X, formerly Twitter, writing: “Gotta get that anger up outcha champ….It’s honestly sad,” Hart wrote. “In the meantime…. Please enjoy MY MOVIE TRAILER to my next film “LIFT” which will be dropping on @netflixin 8 days!!!!

Grammy Award-winning rapper and The Fast and The Furious actor Ludacris was also a target for the comedian’s barbs. “We were both invited to an Illuminati thing,” Williams said later on in the podcast. “It had to be one or the other of us, and decisions had to be made.” Ludacris would respond early Friday morning with a freestyle, seemingly aiming at Williams with the line, “Never been Illuminati, only Ill-Luda-nati.”

Sure enough, responses to Williams’ remarks surfaced after the episode’s smash airing (presently, it has over 15 million views). Cedric the Entertainer responded in the show’s comments section on Instagram, writing: “Revisionist History, regardless of whatever Katts opinion My career can’t be reduced to One Joke Katt Williams claims as his.” Trick Daddy even submitted an expletive-filled response to Williams through his own Instagram account.

Check out the other responses from Ludacris and the reactions from others on social media to those reactions below.

This X user posted a further response from Cedric The Entertainer, where he states again that he doesn’t know where Williams’ accusations stem from.

2. Trick Daddy

Trick Daddy snapped back at Katt Williams, yelling “Keep all O.G.’s names out your mouth!!”

3. Michael Blackson

Comedian Michael Blackson, who was also called out by Williams, took umbrage in a thread on his own X account, ending with this joke meme.

4. Etan Thomas

The motivational speaker and writer brought up an Instagram video of Deon Cole speaking about Williams’ generosity from last month, asking others to focus on those positive elements from the interview.

5. Charles Barkley

The Katt Williams effect also hit TNT’s Inside The NBA, as Charles Barkley shouted “Don’t make me call Katt Williams on your ass!” at co-host Shaquille O’Neal.

6. Boosie

Boosie took time out to also speak about Katt Williams’ generosity.

7. Robert Griffin III

The former Washington Commanders quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner apparently enjoyed the Ludacris freestyle.

8. Roy Wood Jr

The comedian offered this sage statement when someone asked his opinion of Williams’ comments.

9. ElginBarrettEugeneSmith

This X user shared a response from Gary Owen, who Williams mentioned in his interview as someone “who’s been doing standup for 25 years and never crossed over.”
