2023 Premio Lo Nuestro Red Carpet: See the Photos

The stars shined at Premio Lo Nuestro’s 35th annual awards ceremony. Artists such as Tokischa, Sofía Reyes, MAR, Victor Manuelle and Lit Killah were stylish as they strutted down the magenta carpet before entering the show, which took place Thursday (Feb. 23) in Miami.

Argentine artists Lit Killah and Tiago PZK were among the first to arrive on the red carpet. Tiago was one of the first artists to perform alongside Elena Rose and Alvaro Diaz. Mexican singer-songwriter Sofía Reyes, who presented an award at the show, opted for a long gold dress. Meanwhile, Tokischa arrived wearing an edgy striped suit and a blond mustache as one of her accessories.

The 2023 Premio Lo Nuestro, which is themed “El Mundo Es Lo Nuestro” (or The World Is Ours), is co-hosted by Colombian pop star Yatra, Mexican TV presenter and actress Alejandra Espinoza, Mexican superstar Paulina Rubio, and Adrián Uribe of Univision’s late-night show De Noche Pero Sin Sueño.

Yatra tops this year’s nominations with 10 nods including the all-genre artist of the year category. He’s closely followed by other top nominees Bad Bunny, Camilo, Becky G, and Grupo Firme, who each have nine nods; Maluma, Daddy Yankee, and Ozuna with eight each; power couple Rauw Alejandro and Rosalía tie with seven, as well as Carin León, Karol G, Carlos Vives, and J Balvin. In total, 192 artists across diverse musical backgrounds are nominated within 39 categories.

The nominations for the fan-voted Premio Lo Nuestro are based on Uforia radio airplay during the eligibility period of Oct. 1, 2021 through Sept. 30, 2022. Streaming counts and the assessment of a committee of music and entertainment experts also factor in this list.

Maluma & Marc Anthony Enliven Premio Lo Nuestro With Salsa-Pop Smash ‘La Fórmula’

Maluma and Marc Anthony joined forces for a riveting performance of “La Fórluma” at Thursday’s (Feb. 23) Premio Lo Nuestro.

The Colombian crooner began his set offstage on a round table occupied by beautiful women, and he lit up a cigar while looking melancholic. Then, salsa legend Marc Antony entered the scene, and the vibrant rhythm exploded into a dazzling tropical frenzy. “No hay una fórmula para olvidar tus besos,” he wailed. “There is no formula to forget your kisses.”

Maluma wore a snazzy red corduroy suit and matching red-tinted glasses, while Anthony dressed in a gray buttoned-up blazer, black jeans and dark shades.

The pair were clearly having a blast, dancing, backed by their horn-powered salsa ensemble who further enlivened the crowd. “Comenzó la rumba, mamasita,” the singers declared, “The rumba just began.”

Produced by the two singers, as well as Edgar Barrera, Rude Boyz and Sergio George, the duet chronicles how no formula exists for securing love and devotion with a certain someone — but there’s always hope.

Just moments prior, Anthony won the award for album of the year — tropical for Pa’llá Voy. “I want to acknowledge all my colleagues from the bottom of my heart, each one of you inspires me — Tito, Victor, Puerto Rico!” he said in his acceptance speech. “In a room full of dreamers, we gave our lives to this craft, and after 30 years I stand here, and it was all worth a damn.”

Monsta X Announced as Second Headliner for We Bridge Music Festival & Expo in Las Vegas

After kicking off February with its announcement of a new K-pop music experience in the United States, We Bridge Music Festival & Expo has finalized its lineup with the addition of two artists.

Monsta X will be the day 1 headliner for the Las Vegas fest’s first night of concerts on April 21. The festival has also added rapper-singer Jessi to its 10-artist bill.

We Bridge marks Monsta X’s Stateside live return since last summer after the U.S. leg of their No Limit world tour wrapped in June. The “Beautiful Liar” boy band was scheduled headliners for both Nickelodeon’s NickFest and KAMP LA 2022 laast year, but the former was canceled over “market conditions,” while MX was not able to appear at the latter event due to festival “visa issues.”

“We are really excited to be part of We Bridge Music Festival and Expo and bring our show to Las Vegas for all the fans,” Monsta X said via press release. “We will be there on April 21 and can’t wait for you all there.”

Meanwhile, We Bridge marks a rare opportunity for Queens-born Jessi to perform for American fans. The viral “Zoom” star most recently toured Europe in October, visiting cities like London, Paris and Barcelona. “Catch me at the Expo meeting fans and performing on April 21 at the festival,” Jessi said in a press release. “Hope to see you all there!”

The two artists join the eight previously announced artists for We Bridge’s inaugural that include fellow headliner ENHYPEN, as well as K-pop boy bands CIX and ONEUS, girl groups Dreamcatcher, fromis_9 and VIVIZ, plus solo stars Kang Daniel and BE’O.

Tickets are on sale now for the We Bridge Music Festival and Expo that’s taking place from April 21-23 at the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino and the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. Ivy Queen Delivers a Reggaeton Master Class at 2023 Premio Lo Nuestro

Looking like a total goddess in gold, Ivy Queen gave a reggaeton master class at Thursday’s (Feb. 23) Premio Lo Nuestro. Ivy Queen performed a medley of her biggest hits, including “Te He Querido Te He Llorado,” “Que Lloren” and “Quiero Bailar,” surrounded by a troupe of women and men dancers.

Following her performance, Ivy Queen received the special Premio Lo Nuestro Legado Musical, making history as the first woman to get that honor.

“Thank you so much,” she said, visibly emotional. “I know what it is to get up without strength. I know what it is to hear someone tell you no, or that a type of music isn’t for you because you have ovaries. But I also heard a voice that told me, ‘don’t give up, Caballota.’ I celebrate this award with those that know me, that make me visible. And like Celia Cruz, an artist that’s inspired me, once said, as long as I breathe and aspire, I take on the role to elevate women with elegance. This is to all women who are filled with courage when they hear my music.”

Songwriters With the Most Oscar Nods for Songs They Wrote by Themselves

The trend in songwriting is toward ever-larger collectives of writers collaborating. But some writers do very well – and maybe even better – on their own. Diane Warren has been the sole scribe on 10 of her 14 Oscar-nominated songs – including “Applause” from Tell It Like a Woman, which is vying for the award at the 95th Oscars on March 12. Only one songwriter in Oscar history has been the sole writer of more than 10 Oscar-nominated songs.

Warren worked with a collaborator, Albert Hammond, on her first Oscar-nominated song, the propulsive “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” from Mannequin (1987). She later collaborated with Lady Gaga, Common and Laura Pausini on Oscar-nominated songs.

Warren’s roster of solo-written songs includes three of her signature hits – “Because You Loved Me” from Up Close and Personal (1996), “How Do I Live” from Con Air (1997) and “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” from Armageddon (1998), all of which also received Grammy nominations for song of the year.

Twelve songwriters in Oscar history have received two or more nominations for best original song for songs they wrote all by themselves. Six of these writers have only been nominated for solo-written songs. These include two of the foremost writers of the Great American Songbook, Irving Berlin and Cole Porter, and four top contemporary writers – Dolly Parton, Bruce Springsteen, Randy Newman and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Here are all songwriters who have received two or more Oscar nods for best original song for pieces they wrote entirely by themselves.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, 2

Miranda is the sole writer of both of his nominated songs to date – “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana (2016) and “Dos Oruguitas” from Encanto (2021). Bruce Springsteen, 2

The Boss is the sole writer of both of his nominated songs to date – “Streets of Philadelphia” from Jonathan Demme’s Philadelphia (which won, 1993) and “Dead Man Walkin’” from Tim Robbins’ Dead Man Walking (1995).
Dolly Parton, 2

Parton is the sole writer of both of her nominated songs to date – “Nine to Five” from the hit comedy of the same name in which she co-starred with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin (1980) and “Travelin’ Through” from Transamerica (2005).
Phil Collins, 2

Collins is the sole writer of two of his three nominated songs to date – the striking torch ballad “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” from Against All Odds (1984) and “You’ll Be in My Heart” from Tarzan (which won, 1999). Collins had a co-writer – Motown legend Lamont Dozier – on his other nominated song, “Two Hearts” from Buster (1988).
Lionel Richie, 2

Richie is the sole writer of two of his three nominated songs to date – “Endless Love” from the movie of the same name (1981) and “Say You, Say Me” from White Nights (which won, 1985). Richie collaborated with Quincy Jones and Rod Temperton on his other nominated song – “Miss Celie’s Blues (Sister)” from The Color Purple, which lost to “Say You, Say Me.”
Leslie Bricusse, 2

Bricusse was the sole writer of his first two nominated songs – “Talk to the Animals” from Doctor Dolittle (which won, 1967) and “Thank You Very Much” from Scrooge (1970). He worked with collaborators on his last three nominated songs. He teamed with Henry Mancini on “Life in a Looking Glass” from That’s Life (1986) and with John Williams on both “Somewhere in My Memory” from Home Alone (1990) and “When You’re Alone” from Hook (1991). Bricusse died in 2021 at age 90.
Johnny Mercer, 2

Mercer was the sole writer of two of his near-record 18 nominated songs. (Only Sammy Cahn amassed more nominations in the category – 26). Mercer was the sole writer of “Something’s Gotta Give” from the Fred Astaire/Leslie Caron film Daddy Long Legs (1955) and “The Facts of Life” from the Bob Hope/Lucille Ball movie of the same name (1960). He collaborated on his other nominated songs with Henry Mancini (five songs), Harold Arlen (four), Harry Warren (two) and Jimmy McHugh, Artie Shaw, Jerome Kern, Hoagy Carmichael and Marvin Hamlisch (one each). Frank Loesser, 3

Loesser teamed with composers Lou Alter and Arthur Schwartz for his first two nominated songs, but was the sole writer of his last three – “I Wish I Didn’t Love You So” from The Perils of Pauline (1947), “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” from Neptune’s Daughter (1949) and “Thumbelina” from Hans Christian Andersen (1952). “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” is one of the most enduring songs from the 1940s, though the storyline of seduction, once viewed as charming, is now seen as problematic by some. Loesser died in 1969 at age 59.
Cole Porter, 4

Porter was the sole writer of all four of his nominated songs – “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” from Born to Dance (1936), “Since I Kissed My Baby Goodbye” from You’ll Never Get Rich (1941), “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To” from Something to Shout About (1943) and “True Love” from High Society (1956). “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” is one of Frank Sinatra’s signature hits. “True Love” was a smash collab in 1956 for Bing Crosby & Grace Kelly. Porter, pictured here at the piano in 1956 with his dog beside him, died in 1964 at age 73.
Irving Berlin, 7

Berlin was the sole writer of all seven of his nominated songs – “Cheek to Cheek” from Top Hat (1935), “Change Partners” from Carefree (1938), “Now It Can Be Told” from Alexander’s Ragtime Band (also 1938), “I Poured My Heart Into a Song” from Second Fiddle (1939), “White Christmas” from Holiday Inn (which won, 1942), “You Keep Coming Back Like a Song” from Blue Skies (1946) and “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep” from White Christmas (1954). “Cheek to Cheek” came in second in the Oscar voting for 1935. The winner that year was “Lullaby of Broadway.” Both songs are famous to this day. And wouldn’t it be great if the Academy revealed the runner-up nowadays, as they did that year? Berlin died in 1989 at age 101.
Diane Warren, 10

Warren is the sole writer of 10 of her 14 nominated songs to date. Warren teamed with Albert Hammond, best known for his 1972 smash “It Never Rains in Southern California,” to write her first Oscar-nominated song, “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” from Mannequin (1987). She later teamed with Lady Gaga on “Til It Happens to You” from The Hunting Ground (2015), Common on “Stand Up for Something” from Marshall (2017) and Laura Pausini for “Io Sì (Seen)” from The Life Ahead (La Vita Davanti a Se).

She has been the sole writer of her other 10 nominated songs – “Because You Loved Me” from Up Close and Personal (1996), “How Do I Live” from Con Air (1997), “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing “ from Armageddon (1998), “Music of My Heart” from Music of the Heart (1999), “There You’ll Be” from Pearl Harbor (2001), “Grateful” from Beyond the Lights (2014), “I’ll Fight” from RBG (2018), “I’m Standing With You” from Breakthrough (2019), “Somehow You Do” from Four Good Days (2021) and “Applause” from Tell It Like a Woman (2022).

Randy Newman, 13

Newman is the sole writer of all 13 of his nominated songs to date, including a song from each of the four Toy Story movies. He was nominated for “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from Toy Story (1995) and “When She Loved Me” from Toy Story 2 (1999), won for “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3 (2010) and was nominated for “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” from Toy Story 4 (2019). In the photo above, Newman is performing the latter song on the Oscar telecast.

Newman’s first Oscar winner was “If I Didn’t Have You” from Monsters, Inc. (2001). Newman is the only writer in Oscar history to win twice for solo-written songs.

His other nominees are “One More Hour” from Ragtime (1981), “I Love to See You Smile” from Parenthood (1989), “Make Up Your Mind” from The Paper (1994), “That’ll Do” from Babe: Pig in the City (1998), “A Fool in Love” from Meet the Parents (2000), “Our Town” from Cars (2006), and “Almost There” and “Down in New Orleans” from The Princess and the Frog (2009).

Tiago PZK, Elena Rose & Alvaro Díaz Prove That Urbano’s New Class Is Full of Power at 2023 Premio Lo Nuestro

With the rising new crop of urbano upstarts making waves across the Americas and beyond, one of the most exciting billings at Thursday’s Premio Lo Nuestro was Tiago PZK, Elena Rose and Alvaro Díaz. Each member — representing a distinct scene from across the Spanish-speaking continent — definitely delivered.

Donning a deep purple iridescent suit, Argentine trap star Tiago PZK was as vulnerable as ever with his confessional ballad “Bemaste.” He performed against a sunset backdrop that showed his silhouette, wearing sunglasses, and tenderly sang to the crowd, making it feel extraordinarily intimate. The song’s stripped-down keys and lo-fi production set the stage for honest lyricism as he candidly articulated what finding love and devotion can feel like, while navigating the all-consuming vortex of fame.

“I consider this song the first work of art of my career, conceptually and audio-visually, from the bottom of my heart,” Tiago PZK previously told Billboard Español in an email. “I don’t have any expectations, because before I have one, I’m simply fulfilled to have created this song and what it means to me. Do not put barriers to love.”

Elena Rose, who wore a silky pearlesque dress, sang “Bayamón,” which features an interpolation of Sister Nancy’s classic reggae song “Bam Bam”; she appeared amid a troupe of female dancers. Although an emerging artist herself, Elena Rose has been a creative force behind many a Latin pop hit. One of her most recent co-songwriting credits is “Por el Resto de Tu Vida,” the dazzling bolero-trap ballad performed by Christian Nodal and Tini.

Alvaro Díaz, dressed in black leather, also exhilarated, delivering his latest fashion-forward reggaeton cut “1000Canciones.”

Cardi B Surprises Crowd at GloRilla’s New York Concert for ‘Tomorrow 2’

GloRilla made a tour stop in New York City on Wednesday and brought Cardi B out for a surprise performance of their hit collab “Tomorrow 2.”

The “Up” MC’s sudden appearance caused the entire room to erupt into pandemonium as she delivered her verse on the track, rapping, “I know that I’m rich, but I can’t help it, bi—, I’m hood as f—/ I’ve been on these bi—es’ neck so long, sometimes my foot get stuck/ I can’t put you in my business, you might wish me dead tomorrow/ Bi—es be on di– today, sing every word of ‘Up’ tomorrow/ Bi—, I still got cases open, keep your mouth shut tomorrow.”

Released last fall, “Tomorrow 2” ultimately peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, earning GloRilla the first top 10 hit of her career following her Hitkidd-assisted breakout single “F.N.F. (Let’s Go).” Since then, the Memphis newcomer has teamed up with Moneybagg Yo for “On Wat U On” and taken aim at haters with the one-off “Internet Trolls.”

Meanwhile, Cardi just dropped a McDonald’s merch line with Offset on the heels of starring in their adorable Valentine’s Day-themed Super Bowl commercial together. The couple also recently hit the stage for a star-studded pre-Super Bowl set that included celeb guests in the audience like Serena Williams and Tiffany Haddish, and Cardi presented the award for best rap album to Kendrick Lamar for Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers at the 2023 Grammy Awards.

Lil Wayne Says He Should Be No. 1 on Billboard’s Greatest Rappers List: ‘Who the Hell Is Before Me?’

Billboard / VIBE’s 50 Greatest Rappers of All-Time list continues to spark debate amongst fans and rappers on social media, and now Lil Wayne has chimed in.

The rapper, who came in at No. 7 on the list, told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 this week that he could’ve topped the list. “Man, who the hell is before me? Was the list including all hip-hop, like before and after as well?” he asked. “I can deal with that. I will tell you that I am a motherf—ing one. Everybody whose names you named, they also know I’m number one. Go ask ’em. They know what it is.”

He later discussed his own impact as a force in hip-hop. “Honestly, I would say… there is a point where you look around and you’re like I’m not even sure if anyone’s coming down this road with me,” Wayne revealed. “Any direction I go into, it’s always inspired. Therefore I never feel alone because I always have the inspiration. Inspiration grows and I work with people that love to see growth. I’m fortunate to have these people around me. The last tour I got off was with Blink-182. At the end of the day I find myself at the country music awards and doing tours with Blink 182. There’s not a lot of rappers in this position who can say they’ve done that. I stand alone on that mountain.”

‘Wicked’ Director Jon M. Chu Says Ariana Grande & The Weeknd’s ‘Die for You’ Remix Is ‘Proof’ of This

Director Jon M. Chu is letting everyone know that Ariana Grande is not trapped in his basement while filming the upcoming movie musical for Wicked. The proof? The Weeknd is releasing the official remix for “Die for You” — featuring Grande — on Friday.

“Proof that I am not holding @arianagrande hostage!!” Chu wrote via his Instagram Stories on Thursday (Feb. 23), sharing Grande’s post with news of the single’s release. “Also I’m so excited to hear this. Congrats G!!!”

While taking a break from playing Glinda the Good Witch on the Wicked set, Grande took to TikTok on Tuesday to tease a clip of her verse of the track. “Wrote and recorded a verse for my friend after a 14 hour day on set. This certain exception had to be made….,” she captioned the video, during which she lays down swooping vocal harmonies, editing as she goes. The Weeknd reposted the video to his Instagram, captioning with a single teary-eyed, smiling emoji.

“Die for You” originally appeared on The Weeknd’s 2016 album, Starboy, but is currently seeing a resurgence on the Billboard charts. The track peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has hovered within the top 10 of the all-genre chart for seven weeks and counting. The track marks the fourth collab between the two stars, with Grande last appearing on a remix of After Hours‘ “Save Your Tears.” The Weeknd also extended himself to Grande’s albums, appearing on her songs “Love Me Harder” and “Off the Table.”
