Selena Gomez Teases New Music With Photos From the Studio: ‘Don’t Worry Guys, It’s Coming’

Pretty soon, new music from Selena Gomez won’t be so rare. The 30-year-old pop star teased in a recent Instagram post that her highly anticipated follow-up to 2020’s Rare — her last proper solo release — is finally underway, sharing snaps from the studio to prove it.

In a carousel of black-and-white photos posted to Instagram Tuesday (June 13), Gomez is sitting in front of a microphone recording vocals for her still unannounced next project. In one picture, she concentrates while reading from a sheet of paper.

“Don’t worry guys, it’s coming,” she captioned the photos. “Even from Paris.”

Gomez has spent the past couple weeks in the City of Love, as documented in recent Instagram photos taken in front of the Eiffel Tower and in French restaurants. Last month, she was spotted in the crowd at Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour concert in Paris, as were Megan Thee Stallion and Kylie Jenner.

The Spring Breakers actress has previously given hints about the direction of her next musical era, which she says will be more upbeat and vulnerable. “The music I’m doing right now is about real things that I’m walking through,” she told Vanity Fair in February. “It’s really powerful, strong, very pop. The theme generally is freedom — freedom from relationships, freedom from the darkness.”

It’s been three years now since fans have gotten an album from the star, though she did drop an EP of all Spanish songs in 2021 called Revalación. She’s also collaborated with a variety of artists in the meantime — including her 2022 hits “Calm Down” with Rema and “Let Somebody Go” with Coldplay — but aside from her documentary’s accompanying single “My Mind & Me,” it’s been a long time since Ms. Gomez has released a bonafide solo project.

That’s not to say she hasn’t been keeping busy, however. As of late, Gomez has been hard at work running her Rare Beauty empire, wrapping up the third season of her acclaimed Hulu series Only Murders In The Building and preparing two new cooking shows for Food Network.

Anita Baker Tells Babyface Fans to Stop Trolling Her: ‘Cyber Bullies Will Not Silence Me’

Anita Baker was excited to tour with the “Legendary” Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds on her The Songstress outing. That’s how she tagged the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/producer in the tour poster for the 15-date run that began in February.

But after Baby was unexpectedly cut from a May 10 show at the Prudential Center in New Jersey after reported technical issues pushed that night’s start time by two hours — resulting in Edmonds getting yanked from the bill — she said Babyface’s fans have been relentlessly harassing and trolling her.

“I am truly sorry to my fans who have been waiting for us to hit the stage this evening at the Prudential Center,” Babyface wrote at the time. “I was asked not to perform in order to give Ms. Baker her space and time to perform her show in its entirety. My band an I are extremely saddened we didn’t get to perform for y’all tonight.”

The badgering has clearly gotten under Baker’s skin, as evidence by a dayslong tweet spree from the 65-year-old “Sweet Love” singer, who has made two things clear: Babyface was the opening act on her tour and she’s had it with the nonsense. “When A friend, is being attacked, by Your friends?… because, of Mis-information/fake news And, You have an Opportunity, to Say Something/Correct it? … It’s A Nice, thing. … It’s the Right thing to do. Reputation, Peace & Safety Matters,” Baker tweeted on June 9th along with a GIF of cartoon mouse Jerry (of Tom & Jerry fame) shaking a baby bird’s hands.

Things got heated over the weekend when Baker upped the ante, tweeting, “Out of Kindness & Community, you Gift them $200k worth of Production/that YOU Pay for… And, Still, they Complain & hold up, the show Annnd, Slander & *Villanize, Your name to social media blogs & press #Massa&Plantation.”

She doubled-down a bit later on Sunday, adding, “It was 9:30pm. *Contractually?… It was WAAAY Past time 4 the Headline Performer, to be On Stage/Anita Baker Support Act did Not Perform. I have No Contract with Support Act Not my Call I Did what i was *Contracted 2 do & Love, as Headline Performer, of my Sold Out Concert.”

The dust-up appeared to stem from Babyface fans who assumed the singer was co-headlining the tour — Baker’s first in nearly 28 years — and that she had made the decision to scotch his set, though the dates were clearly labelled as a celebration of her four decades in music.

Baker’s gloves really came off on Monday, when she seemed to lose patience with the trolling from the fans she dubbed “Kenny’s Crazies” and asked the singer to step in and call them off. “Dearest one. You are Not, privy to *The Contracts*. Yes, Babyface is Special Guest/Support Act, on My Tour,” she tweeted. “This False Narrative, of A Co-headliner is creating Unrealistic Expectations & Aggression, from his fans towards me. He should tell you guys, the Truth.”

She continued to troll the trollers for wanting to “fight a 65 yr. old Woman,” and then seemed to take the fight to another level, writing, “#And, here is what its All about… P.R. for One Person, whi [sic] needs it. And one person who does not,” before adding, “YES… Cyber Bullies, will not Silence me. I will continue to speak.”

Baker appeared to run out of patience around midday Monday, when she again asked Edmonds to tell his fans to stop while suggesting that someone behind the scenes was ginning Baby’s fans up, writing, “There is A White man, behind these Grown Black Men… harassing Me & Gaslighting, My Fans. Because he Cant take over, this Tour… sO? He wants to Destroy it. Kenny’s Crazy Narcissist call off, your Boys.”

At press time it did not appear that Babyface had reacted to Baker’s tweets and a spokesperson for the singer had not returned a request for comment.

Baker’s tour commemorates 40 years in the music game and the anniversary of her debut album, 1983’s The Songstress. The tour dates also mark the first time the Ohio native is performing her classics live since winning back the right of her masters in 2021 with the help of Chance the Rapper. The next scheduled date on the tour is June 30 at the United Center in Chicago

How Coldplay’s Commitment to Latin America Delivered the Year’s Biggest Shows in the World

“Bienvenido y gracias,” British singer Chris Martin told the sold-out crowd of more than 40,000 at Costa Rica’s Estadio Nacional in March 2022 — and “welcome and thank you” may be just enough Spanish to cement Coldplay’s popularity in the region forever.

“Over the years, Chris has developed a good level of what you might call ‘frontman Spanish,’” says Phil Harvey, the band’s manager. “It’s not what I would say is fluent, but he knows enough that he can conduct a concert in Spanish, and obviously that’s helpful in large parts of Latin America.”

The concert in San José, Coldplay’s first performance in Costa Rica, kicked off the band’s Music of the Spheres tour, which eventually played 41 sold-out stadiums throughout Latin America, from Mexico to Peru to Colombia to Chile. The band hit the top two slots on the 2023 midyear Top Boxscores chart with two runs in South America: six dates in March at Estadio do Morumbi in São Paulo drawing almost 440,000 fans and grossing $40.1 million, and six dates last November at Estadio Unico Diudad de la Plata in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with more than 376,000 fans and a $29.8 million gross. The band also hit No. 13 with three dates in Rio de Janeiro later in March, totaling 211,000 fans and a $17.2 million gross. All in all, not counting the band’s performance at the sold-out, 100,000-capacity Rock in Rio festival in Brazil last September, its tour dates in Latin America earned more than $193.3 million, according to Boxscore.

English-speaking rock stars from the United States and Europe have sold out shows in Latin America over the decades, of course, including Aerosmith and Lady Gaga, but Coldplay has spent the last several years burrowing unprecedentedly into local territories and cultures. In addition to tiny gestures such as speaking Spanish, the band invited Colombian singer Manuel Turizo onstage in Bogotá and Argentine star Tini in Buenos Aires for duets. In Buenos Aires, Coldplay covered beloved Argentine rock en espanol band Soda Stereo’s 1990 hit “De Música Ligera”; in Colombia, it covered local hero J Balvin’s 2019 hit with Bad Bunny “La Canción.” (It probably didn’t hurt the band’s Latin American popularity that Camila Cabello, who is Cuban American, opened several dates.)

Midyear Boxscores, Top Boxscores

Midyear Boxscore charts are based on figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. Eligible shows played between Nov. 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023.

“The Latin American audience is so fanatically loyal — if you’re loyal to them, they’re not going to forget you, the way crowds do in the U.S. and Europe,” says Bruno Del Granado, CAA’s global head of Latin music, who does not work with Coldplay. “A lot of times, international bands go to Latin America and they phone it in. They don’t want to deal with the language barrier. By having Manuel Turizo onstage, then singing his song, it’s like, ‘Wait a second, this guy wants to learn our culture.’”

In addition to the onstage moments, Coldplay has spent the last few years routing tours with prominent dates in Latin American countries — its 2016 A Head Full of Dreams tour began and ended in La Plata, Argentina, with stops in Chile, Peru, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. “That was very deliberate,” says Jared Braverman, senior vp of global touring for Live Nation, Coldplay’s longtime promoter. “They’ve always made it a point to prioritize many countries that get passed over because they’re not easy to get to. That builds up an audience over time.”

Over the years, many Western pop and rock stars have sold out large venues throughout Latin America, from Aerosmith’s regional tours beginning in the late 1970s to Rock in Rio, the Brazilian festival that debuted in 1985 and attracts some 700,000 attendees every other year. American rockers such as Keith Richards in the ’80s and Metallica in the ’90s, according to Del Granado, emphasized Latin American dates. The difference over the last two decades, he adds, is “state-of-the-art arenas,” such as the 11-year-old Mexico City Arena, the 4-year-old Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires and the Movistar Arena in Bogotá, renovated in 2018. “So it’s not even a case of, ‘Oh, my God, what am I going to do? Play in an open field or a bullfighting ring or a stadium?’” Del Granado says. “There’s no real excuse for bands not to go down there.”

Midyear Boxscores, Top Ticket Sales

Coldplay’s Western contemporaries have flirted with the same idea of building up Latin American credibility by paying tribute on the ground to beloved local songs and artists: In 2017, Maroon 5 performed a Portuguese version of the Getz/Gilberto Brazilian jazz classic “The Girl From Ipanema” at Rock in Rio. “But Coldplay has embraced it head-on,” says Bruce Moran, president of Live Nation Latin America, adding that music stars are scheduled to play 70 stadiums in the region in 2023. “It’s not just that they’re smart and savvy, but they really have embraced their fans in all regions — and it has paid off, clearly.”

Charlie Puth Loves ‘Being Naked’: ‘I Really Do Have Kind of a Nice Butt’

No stranger to the thirst-trap game, Charlie Puth has taken the concept to a whole new level with his racy new photoshoot for Interview Magazine.

The four-time Grammy Award nominee posed for a risqué set of photos including stills of him lounging nude in a bubble bath, grabbing his crotch in edgy leather pants, posing in a set of black boxer briefs, and, of course, showing off his toned body.

“I really have always loved being naked,” the “Attention” singer mused. “I’m not captivated by the way that I look, but I know that I’m not ugly. So sometimes I’d look at myself in the mirror and I’d be like, ‘I really do have kind of a nice butt.’ And what’s wrong with liking your features? I have really long arms and abnormally large hands. That’s probably why I play piano. Even today, I woke up and it’s kind of fun to look at yourself naked and admire your body.”

As much as the “Marvin Gaye” singer loves showing off, he also stresses the importance of consent. “I’m not going to ever be inappropriate and naked in front of people who don’t want to see me naked,” he said. “But If I’m in my backyard, there’s a lot of trees back there and I know that no one’s looking in, I feel safe. You get a lot of vitamin D. Is that what the sun gives?”

Charlie’s body-positive sentiments are also set to inform his forthcoming fourth studio album. The acclaimed singer-songwriter teased, “The goal is to make the music that’s going to be playing in the background when I do look at myself in the mirror.” According to Charlie, his next album is “half-done” and “will come out next year,” so fans still have some time to prepare for his sexy new record.

Charlie Puth has earned four top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 including the 12-week No. 1 single “See You Again” (with Wiz Khalifa). On the Billboard 200, the New Jersey native has scored three consecutive top ten albums: 2016’s Nine Track Mind (No. 6), 2018’s Voicenotes (No. 4), and 2022’s Charlie (No. 10).

Watch Harry Styles, Elton John, Daddy Yankee & More Race to the Top of Billboard’s Midyear Top Tours Chart

As previously reported, Harry Styles came out on top on Billboard Boxscore’s 2023 midyear Top Tours chart. But it wasn’t an easy win. Across the six-month tracking period, the No. 1 spot flipped six times, coming down to a margin of less than $500,000, or 0.3%. Take a look below at how the midyear 2023 Top Tours ranking took shape, from Nov. 1, 2022, through April 30, 2023.

For the first day of November, Elton John led via his Nov. 1 show at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium, earning $7.8 million, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. But, temporarily, he gave way to Coldplay, in the middle of a 10-show run at Buenos Aires’ Estadio Unico Ciudad de La Plata.

It took two Argentinian shows for Coldplay to take over. But before that epic run could end, Sir Elton was back on top, continuing his mammoth stadium run in North America, including three sold-out shows at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium on Nov. 17 and 19-20.

John held the top spot into December, until being displaced by 2022’s overall champ, Bad Bunny. The Puerto Rican superstar wrapped World’s Hottest Tour, reaching a high of $67.9 million since the beginning of the ’23 tracking period. But just like that, Daddy Yankee, another Puerto Rican icon promoted by Cardenas Marketing Network, took over for the end of the calendar year, with $72.5 million.

Elton was back in January, playing shows in Oceania that not only gave him a third stint at No. 1, but cemented the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour as the highest-grossing tour of all time.

But then came Harry. After many months, midyears and year-end rankings in the top five, Mr. Styles claimed the pole position, juiced up by shows in Australia and Asia in February and March. Ultimately, he earned $138.6 million between November and April.

And despite Elton’s last-minute run at the O2 Arena (and one show on April 27 at Munich’s Olympiahalle), Styles stayed strong. John inched towards the top but ultimately fell short by less than half of a percentage point.

While those men traded off on top, Ed Sheeran, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Dua Lipa, Kevin Hart, Luke Combs, SZA and many more came in as some of the top touring acts of the midyear tracking period. Check back later this year for a year-end update with some of the summer’s biggest stadium runs.

Songwriters Hall of Fame Honorees Post Malone, Teddy Riley, Gloria Estefan & More Share the Stories Behind Their Songs

Co-written with: Michael Jackson and Bernard Belle

Recorded by: Michael Jackson

Chart peak: No. 3, Hot 100, March 7, 1992

This record that was all about the hook: “Do you remember the time when we fell in love?” I put myself in that position with my fiancé at that moment, because we were falling out of love, and I always go back to that line. I was with Michael and he listened to four [of my] demos before that song, and we got to that fifth track — and after hearing it for like 16 bars, Michael said, “Stop.” I actually thought I was getting fired. And the next thing I know he said, ‘Can I talk to you in my office?’

And I go into the office, and I’m nervous as hell. This is my first time playing demos for him. And I see is this beautiful collage he was working on. I made him use that as the cover for the album, but that’s a different story. He said, “What is that first chord?” I said to him, “I don’t know. I can’t name the chord for you.” He gave a little laugh and said, “I’m not trying to put you on the spot, I just want you to know that you have blown me away with that chord. I’ve never heard it in my whole entire career.” It’s actually a C 7 augment. So you’re playing C, E, G, B flat, E flat. It’s a church chord.

When we finally get to the studio to start recording vocals after we got the lyrics from my friend Bernard Belle — who I have to mention, because he just took new jack swing to the next level — Michael comes in and sings the first verse. And we all get excited. And then he takes a break, and we think he’s going to work out with his vocal coach Seth Riggs, and [he] keeps us waiting. So I go in the back and I say, “Seth, where is Michael?” He had slipped out the back. And then Michael calls me. He’s on a plane going to Switzerland. He didn’t mention it. This just gives the people an idea that creativity has no time. It’s whenever, whatever, however. I was just floored.

Jennie Apologizes for Leaving BLACKPINK Concert Mid-Show: ‘I’m Doing My Best to Recover’

Jennie has spoken out for the first time since she left a BLACKPINK concert mid-show due to health issues.

In Tuesday (June 13) post on Instagram Stories, the 27-year-old K-pop star personally apologized to fans for abruptly exiting the stage during a concert over the weekend in Melbourne, leaving bandmates Rosé, Lisa and Jisoo to finish out the show without her. “Dear Melbourne Blinks,” she wrote. “I’m so sorry i wasnt able to finish the show on Sunday.”

“I’m doing my best to recover [at the moment],” the Idol actress continued, her message written in simple white lettering over a black background. “Your understanding and support means the world to me. Thank you to everyone who came to our Melbourne show. Love you guys.”

During the Sunday (June 11) show at Australia’s Rod Laver Arena, Jennie was performing “Lovesick Girls” with her bandmates, making her way through the group’s signature four-part choreography. But then, she suddenly stopped mid-dance and walked off the stage, looking visibly weak.

The remaining three explained to fans that Jennie had been feeling unwell all day prior, and YG Entertainment afterwards released a statement on Weverse saying that she had been unable to continue performing “due to her deteriorating condition.” “JENNIE expressed her strong determination to carry on with the performance until the end,” read the statement. “However, following medical advice on site, we immediately took measures to ensure she receives ample rest and stability.”

“JENNIE has conveyed her regrets for not being able to stay with the fans until the end, and assures that she will recover as soon as possible,” the company added.

If she’s to appear at BLACKPINK’s next show, Jennie only has a few days to get her strength back up to performance ability. The artists are scheduled to play two shows at Qudos Bank Arena Friday (June 16) and Saturday (June 17) in Sydney.

The set, released June 2 via JYP/Imperial/Republic Records, debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 249,500 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending June 8, according to Luminate. That’s the fourth-largest week, by units earned, for any album in 2023 so far.

Stray Kids earn their third Billboard 200 No. 1, after Oddinary and Maxident, both in 2022.

Of the new title’s 249,500 units, 235,000 were in album sales. Like many K-pop releases, the CD edition of 5-STAR was issued in collectible CD packages (18 total, including exclusives for Barnes & Noble, Target, Walmart and a signed edition in the group’s webstore), each containing a standard set of bonus items and randomized elements (photo cards, mini posters, sticker sets, photo books). There were also four alternative digital versions of the album, sold only in the act’s webstore, each containing the base song tracklist, but with alternative covers and bonus voice memos from individual members of the eight-member group, each selling for $6.99.

Dating to the Artist 100’s launch in 2014, Stray Kids are just the second K-pop act to spend at least three weeks at No. 1. BTS has logged 21 weeks on top (the fourth-most among all acts).

Elsewhere on the Artist 100, Jelly Roll jumps 15-4, reaching the top 10 for the first time thanks to his new LP Whitsitt Chapel. The set, released through Bailee & Buddy/Broken Bow/BMG/BBMG, debuts at No. 1 on Top Rock & Alternative Albums, No. 2 on Top Country Albums and No. 3 on the Billboard 200 (90,000 units), all career bests. The Billboard cover star previously spent a record 28 weeks on the Emerging Artist chart.

Plus, ENHYPEN re-enters the Artist 100 at No. 5, a new best, thanks to the group’s new EP Dark Blood. The set, released via Be:Lift Lab/Geffen/IGA, debuts at a career-high No. 4 on the Billboard 200 (88,000 units); the act previously hit the top 10 (No. 6) in August 2022 with the EP Manifesto: Day 1.

The Artist 100 measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay and streaming to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

BTS’ 60 Best Songs: Critics’ Picks

The band celebrates its ten-year anniversary June 13, 2023.

BTS celebrates its 10th anniversary on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, ringing in an entire decade of historic accomplishments at the milestone anniversary.

In an industry marked by imminent expiration dates, 10 years is considered unheard of for many pop groups—no matter where they call home. But BTS have risen far above any short, rise-and-fall arc, as they continue to reach new heights even in their current “Chapter Two” by balancing solo careers alongside their group activities. Both as a septet and on their own, members RM, Jin, J-Hope, Suga, Jimin, V and Jung Kook keep breaking their records after remapping an entirely new future for South Korean crossover success in the States.

Formed in 2013 by Big Hit Entertainment (the humble record label that eventually had a corporate rebranding into today’s HYBE), all seven members used to share one bedroom. The image of the group handing out flyers to a Los Angeles concert in 2014 was immortalized in their show, American Hustle Life. But now, the K-pop phenoms are living comfortably in luxury apartments, selling out stadiums in minutes and earning recognition from the industry’s most prominent artists and awards shows.

To continue the celebrations for BTS’ annual Festa, Billboard updated its critics’ list of top tracks and extended it to a clean 60 songs. The initial Top 50 created for BTS’ fifth anniversary in 2018 sees new BTS classics (including their several Hot 100 No. 1s) join the list as well as beloved B-sides (scroll through to see where tracks like “Blue & Grey” or “Run BTS” land). For the purposes of this list, the only songs considered were those released by the group or credited to BTS, and not solo releases—those solo songs could make their own stacked Top 60 as well.

Happy birthday to Bangtan and here’s to all the hits “Yet to Come.”

Keith Urban Apologizes For Exposing Phoebe Bridgers’ and Bo Burnham’s Romance at Taylor Swift Eras Show: ‘I Felt Bad’

It’s one thing if you and your wife get caught on a Kiss Cam at the stadium. But it’s a whole other thing if your video accidentally outs a not-yet-official fellow celebrity couple. That’s the situation Keith Urban apologized for after the singer’s May 15 TikTok video — in which he was dancing with wife Nicole Kidman at a Taylor Swift Philly Eras Tour — also included a brief glimpse of Phoebe Bridgers making out with comedian Bo Burnham in the background.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Urban was apologetic about breaking the celebrity romance bro code. “Yeah, oh, I found out,” Urban laughed about the reverberations of his accidental reveal. “Phoebe, I’m so sorry… It felt very awkward. I felt bad. I was just digging on the concert! You never know what’s gonna happen.” The couple have reportedly been dating since earlier this year but have so far not confirmed their romance or commented on Urban’s clip slip.

In the video, Urban and Kidman danced with joy as Swift performed her 1989 hit “Style.” Eagle-eyed fans, however, zoomed in on the Boygenius singer and Burnham — she covered his Inside song “That Funny Feeling” in 2021 — as they cuddled in the background. At one point, Eras Tour opener Bridgers appeared to turn around and kiss the comedian as Swift sang, “We never goin’ out of style/ We never goin’ out of style” from the stage, which sent fans into a social media freakout.

Urban joined Tanya Tucker, Miranda Lambert, Lainey Wilson, HARDY and surprise performer Jelly Roll at Friday night’s CMA Fest mega-concert at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium on Friday night.
