PETA Slams Britney Spears for Allegedly Buying New Puppy Instead of Rescuing

Just one day after Britney Spears took to Instagram to share an adorable video of her new fluffy white puppy, aptly named Snow, PETA is criticizing the star.

While Spears did not indicate whether she bought Snow or rescued the pup in her post, PETA told TMZ that supporting those businesses is dangerous. “When influential people buy puppies, puppy mills cheer and animal shelters watch the homeless-animal crisis get even worse,” the animal rights organization told the publication. “With this one cutesy post, Britney Spears has sentenced countless deserving dogs in shelters to more days without love, a comfy bed to curl up on, or a chance at a real life.”

PETA continued, “She could have been a force for good and adopted, but instead she chose to be toxic, and animals will pay with their lives.”

Billboard has reached out to Spears’ reps for more information.

The pop superstar took to Instagram on Wednesday (Aug. 23) to share a video the puppy. In the clip, it’s unclear what breed the tiny pup is, but the white fluffy dog is seen wagging its tail as it runs around Spears’ feet. “Introducing Snow … the new [addition] to the family … it’s her world and we just live in it,” the “Circus” singer captioned the post.

The cute new family member arrives amid news that Spears’ husband Sam Asghari filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court on Aug. 16, citing irreconcilable differences.

BTS’ V Doubles Up in Top 10 of Global Excl. U.S. Chart

Jung Kook holds atop the Aug. 26-dated Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts with “Seven,” featuring Latto. At No. 1 for the fifth consecutive week on both lists, it’s the longest running chart-topper on the Global 200 among K-pop acts, including his fellow BTS members and even BTS as a group (“Dynamite” led for four weeks in 2020-21).

But another BTS member makes noise with a pair of top 10 arrivals. V debuts on Global Excl. U.S. at No. 6 with “Love Me Again” and at No. 8 with “Rainy Days,” while starting at Nos. 12 and 16, respectively, on the Global 200.

“Love Me Again” leads the pair with 40.8 million official streams and 35,000 downloads sold worldwide in the week ending Aug. 17, according to Luminate. “Rainy Days” follows with 38.9 million clicks and 32,000 sold. Both tracks take 92% of those streaming figures from outside the U.S.

The bigger global totals for “Love Me Again” are reflected in the song’s international chart ranks. Not only does the song outpace “Rainy Days” in the U.S. (3.4 million streams vs. 2.9 million), but it’s also higher on all five of Billboard’s Hits of the World charts on which they both appear. They’re side-by-side at Nos. 16 and 17, respectively, on Indonesia Songs, but most dramatically separated (if not wildly so) on V’s native South Korea Songs, at Nos. 7 and 21.

Both songs boast official music videos, signaling a big win, especially, for “Rainy Days.” Across video platforms worldwide, the clip received 13.5 million streams (35% of the song’s overall streaming total), compared to 10.5 million (26%) for “Love Me Again.”

Any which way these songs’ success is split, both tracks mark new highs for V. Previously, he hit No. 43 on Global Excl. U.S. and No. 51 on the Global 200 with “Christmas Tree.” With “Love Me Again” and “Rainy Days,” he becomes the fifth BTS member to crack the top 10, following, in chronological order, Jung Kook, Jin, Jimin and Suga (under the alias Agust D).

In total, the men of BTS have accumulated 11 top 10s on Global Excl. U.S. as soloists – equaling the group’s tally.

Top-Grossing Country Artists of All Time, According to Billboard Boxscore

For nearly four decades, Billboard Boxscore has tracked the top tours, and touring artists, in the music industry, across various musical genres.

The 2023 Billboard Boxscore Mid-Year report, which was led by pop star Harry Styles, whose Love on Tour trek grossed $138.6 million and sold 1.2 million tickets across 38 shows between Nov. 1, 2022, and April 30, 2023. But the mid-year report also included top tours from country artists Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen and Carrie Underwood.

Here, we look into the 20 top-grossing country touring artists of all time, according to Billboard Boxscore. The rankings are based on figures reported to Billboard Boxscore, dating back to 1985 and running through Aug. 16, 2023. An artist’s gross reflects all headline shows plus 50% of any co-headline grosses.

The list includes touring juggernauts ranging from George Strait and Garth Brooks to Shania Twain and Taylor Swift.

One key thing to note is that Garth Brooks’s most recent tours were not reported to Boxscore, including The Garth Brooks World Tour (2014-2017) and The Garth Brooks Stadium Tour (2018-2022). Billboard estimates Brooks would likely be within the top three top-grossing country artists of all time if those tour numbers were included; as it stands without those tour numbers, he ranks at No. 13 on the list.

Also, Taylor Swift’s ranking includes all of Swift’s touring from her 2009-2010 The Fearless Tour, through the 2013-2014 The Red Tour, but not tours after she officially announced her transition to pop in 2014 (including 2015’s The 1989 World Tour, 2018’s Reputation Stadium Tour and her current The Eras Tour).

According to Billboard Boxscore, all of these artists have grossed $100 million or more.

Billboard Latin Music Awards 2023: All Categories in Which Peso Pluma Competes

Peso Pluma will enter the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards as the top finalist, earning a staggering 21 nods across 15 categories, including artist of the year and artist of the year, new.

The Mexican hitmaker, who has had an impressive year on the Billboard charts, is also up for Hot Latin Songs of the year, male, Top Latin Album of the year, Streaming Song of the year (with three nominations), songwriter of the year and more.

His feature with Eslabon Armado on “Ella Baila Sola” scores a total of six mentions in categories that include, Global 200 Latin song of the year, Sales song of the year, regional Mexican song of the year, and others. Both acts made history on the charts with their viral hit, including the Hot 100. It’s an insatiable combination of sad sierreño with corridos tumbados, a style that continues to gain momentum this year across many all-genre Billboard charts.

“La Bebe” also comes in with full force, a reggaetón track by Yng Lvcas featuring Peso Pluma.

“One day, someone reached out and said, ‘Peso Pluma is in Mexico, he wants to record, and he wants to start doing reggaetón’,” Yng Lvcas told Billboard Español in April. “Once we got to the studio, he said, ‘I’m interested in doing the remix of ‘La Bebé’ because I really like that song.’”

Peso Pluma’s third studio album Génesis enters the Top Latin Album of the year and regional Mexican album of the year categories. The album made history with a No. 3 debut on the Billboard 200, the highest ranking for a regional Mexican album on the chart.

The 30th annual Billboard Latin Music Awards — set to take place Oct. 5 at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla. — will broadcast live on Telemundo, and simultaneously on the Spanish entertainment cable network Universo, on Peacock and the Telemundo App. Throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, it will be available on Telemundo Internacional.

The Latin Billboard Music Awards are the only ones that recognize the most popular albums, songs and performers in Latin music, according to Billboard‘s weekly charts. Produced by Telemundo and MBS Special Events, they coincide with Billboard Latin Music Week, which returns to Miami Oct. 2-6 at the Faena Forum. The roster of star speakers include Shakira, Peso Pluma, Arcángel, Vico C and many more. Get your ticket today for the Billboard Latin Music Week 2023 here.

Here Are the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards Artist of the Year Finalists & Their Accomplishments

Billboard and Telemundo announced Thursday (Aug. 24) the list of finalists for the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards. Leading the pack with 21 entries is 24-year-old Peso Pluma, who is up for artist of the year competing against Karol G, Bad Bunny, Grupo Frontera and Fuerza Regida.

Regional Mexican music has significant representation not only in that category but throughout the entire list, as the genre continues to soar in popularity across the world. Grupo Frontera, Peso and Fuerza Regida are three heavy-hitters in música mexicana and have been key players in the genre’s global expansion. Meanwhile, superstars Bad Bunny and Karol G are also up for artist of the year. The two have for the past three years continuously made history with their tours and their music. Bunny and Karol are the only two artists to have all Spanish-language albums top the all-genre Billboard 200 in the chart’s history.

Who will win in the artist of the year category? You’ll have to tune in to the live broadcast from the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla., on Thursday, Oct. 5. The awards ceremony will air on Telemundo and, simultaneously, on Universo, Peacock, the Telemundo App, and throughout Latin America and the Caribbean on Telemundo Internacional.

Finalists and eventual winners are based on key fan interactions with music, including audio and video streaming, album and song sales, radio airplay and touring, tracked by Billboard and its data partner, Luminate. This year’s awards are based on the chart period of Aug. 13, 2022, through Aug. 12, 2023.

Meet the Finalists Up for Artist of the Year, New at the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards

The finalists for the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards have been announced. Today (Aug. 24), Billboard and Telemundo unveiled the artists who are up for categories such as artist of the year, tour of the year, Global 200 Latin artist of the year and artist of the year, new.

Mexican star Peso Pluma is this year’s big finalist with 21 nods, including artist of the year and artist of the year, new. Three out of the latter category’s five finalists — Peso, Grupo Frontera and Chino Pacas — are Mexican music acts, a reflection of the scene’s current hold on the charts. Just this year, a total of 27 regional Mexican tracks have entered the Billboard Hot 100. (On his own, Peso has debuted 21 tracks on the tally in 2023.)

Non-regional Mexican music artist Bizarrap is also a finalist in that category. Earlier this year, his “Music Session” session with Shakira broke all sorts of records. The diss track peaked at No. 9 on the Hot 100, and it spent nine weeks at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart. Mexican reggaetón artist Yng Lvcas also landed a nomination in the category, following the success of his “La Bebe” remix with Peso.

The 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards will broadcast live on Telemundo from the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla., on Thursday, Oct. 5, starting at 7pm ET. The show will also air simultaneously on Universo, Peacock, the Telemundo App and throughout Latin America and the Caribbean on Telemundo Internacional.

Finalists and the eventual winners are based on key fan interactions with music, including audio and video streaming, album and song sales, radio airplay and touring, tracked by Billboard and its data partner, Luminate. This year’s awards are based on the chart period of August 13, 2022, through August 12, 2023.

No Rap Song Has Led the Hot 100 For a Year – What’s Behind the Break & When Might It End?

For the first time in 23 years, a peculiar moment occurs on the Billboard Hot 100, where an entire year has gone by without a rap track reaching No. 1. The weekly recap, which ranks the most popular songs in the U.S., hits the benchmark on the list dated Aug. 26, 2023, as Oliver Anthony Music’s “Rich Men North of Richmond” seals the deal.

The last rap track – defined as songs that have hit or are eligible to appear on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart – to top the listing was Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl,” which debuted atop the Hot 100 on Aug. 27, 2022, and held the rank for that one week. In the 12 months since, three rap titles have come closest to the summit, each peaking at No. 2: Drake and 21 Savage’s “Rich Flex” (Nov. 19, 2022) Drake’s “Search & Rescue” (April 22, 2023) and Lil Durk’s “All My Life,” featuring J. Cole (May 27, 2023).

Before the 2022-23 break, the last time the Hot 100 went without a rap champ for at least a year was pre- and post-Y2K: after Will Smith’s “Wild Wild West,” featuring Dru Hill and Kool Moe Dee, reigned in July 1999. Following the soundtrack single’s one-week rule, rap was absent from the Hot 100 summit until Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me,” featuring Ricardo “RikRok” Ducent began a two-week command in February 2001, a span of 22 No. 1s and just over 18 months. The return quickly brought another champ, as OutKast’s “Ms. Jackson” ousted “It Wasn’t Me” for the former’s Hot 100 coronation.

Rap’s current absence from the Hot 100’s top slot largely traces to the dominance of several hits in the past 12 months that nearly shut out almost all challengers from all genres. Since “Super Freaky Girl,” 14 songs have reached the Hot 100’s summit: Six were multi-week No. 1s driven initially by large streaming premieres, followed by sustained streams and rapid airplay gains: Harry Styles’ “As It Was” (which began its run before “Super Freaky Girl” but returned to the summit), Steve Lacy’s “Bad Habit,” Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero,” Mariah Carey’s annual holiday dominator “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” and Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night.”

The remaining eight, on the contrary, ruled for one week each, due to a high-profile debut (Jimin’s “Like Crazy,” Jung Kook’s “Seven,” featuring Latto, and Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire”), an already-popular hit navigating a crowded landscape with a well-timed sales discount or remix release (Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ “Unholy,” The Weeknd and Ariana Grande’s “Die for You” and SZA’s “Kill Bill”) or a song becoming a rallying cause for larger cultural symbolism (Jason Aldean’s “Try That in a Small Town” and Oliver Anthony Music’s “Richmond”).

Before we pound the alarm, though, the R&B/hip-hop sector remains the largest consumed genre of music in the U.S., according to Luminate, whose data on streaming, sales and radio informs the Hot 100. In the firm’s 2023 mid-year report, R&B/hip-hop accounted for 25.9% of all consumption in the U.S. during the first half of the year. And, of course, rap music being good for at least one, if not multiple, No. 1s each year across the last two decades speaks to its reliability as a hitmaking force. After all, we were a similar spot earlier this summer with the Billboard 200 — lamenting the lack of a No. 1 rap album on the chart — and then in quick succession, Lil Uzi Vert’s Pink Tape and Travis Scott’s Utopia reset the clock there.

At the same time, hip-hop’s presence among Hot 100 top 10s has fallen in the first half of 2023 to its lowest level since 2016, according to Hit Songs Deconstructed’s midyear analysis. The genre “all but disappeared” from the top 10 in Q1 2023, HSD noted earlier in the year, after it reigned in both 2022 and 2020.

So, when does the gap end? Well, the next great hope is on the horizon: After posting two of the three runner-ups in the past year, it’s only fitting that Drake take the next crack at breaking the barrier. The superstar’s new album, For All the Dogs, is set for release tomorrow (Aug. 25) — and, assuming the usual avalanche of streams that accompany any Drake release (plus his Hot 100 pedigree, with his 11 career No. 1s the most among all rappers), he should be in strong contention to recapture the crown.

Doja Cat could also come to the rescue, as her “Paint the Town Red” single is rallying in streams and, while currently at No. 15 on the current Hot 100, should march upward on the coming week’s chart. But whether the next No. 1 arrives from them or someone else, given the genre’s continued overarching influence, it’s hard to envision a rap song not soon appearing at the Hot 100’s apex, with the latest break between leaders likely more a fun fact than a fundamental shift.

Jason Derulo was just trying to track his health with the Oura Ring, but things went awry when he ended up getting an allergic reaction.

The “Savage Love” singer took to Instagram to share a video in which his ring finger is seen swollen and red, preventing him from taking the ring off. “This is so embarrassing,” he tells the camera, as he turns to his friend and laughs. “Woke up, finger was swollen and turning colors. I was like, damn, trying to figure out how to take this damn ring off. It just got swollen overnight and I tried to take it off with oil. When I iced it, it came down a little bit. Then I went to the gym, and my finger swelled up even more.”

Derulo is then seen heading to the hospital, before the doctors try oiling and icing his finger themselves before resorting to cutting the ring off entirely. Once the ring is finally off, Derulo is seen smiling in relief before thanking the medical professionals that helped him.

The Oura Ring, which is marketed as a “personalized health tool” according to the company’s website, helps monitor sleep, heart rate, activity, illness through reading the user’s pulse. The ring itself is made of titanium, which some people are sensitive or allergic to, according to the National Institutes of Health.
