Will Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ Have an Even Bigger Debut the Second Time Around?

The Contenders is a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week (for the upcoming charts dated Nov. 11), Taylor Swift’s latest Taylor’s Version is already her biggest-debuting yet – but will it pass the original album’s bow was nine years earlier?

Taylor Swift, 1989 (Taylor’s Version) (Republic): This was the one fans had perhaps most been waiting for: Taylor Swift’s re-recording of her 2014 blockbuster 1989, the album that confirmed her as a full-on, no-qualifiers-needed pop superstar, and the set many most associate with her today. Even in a pop culture autumn already totally jam-packed with Swift – including a No. 1 movie at the box office (with her concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour) and a No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 (with her revived Lover deep cut “Cruel Summer” — 1989 (Taylor’s Version)‘s Oct. 28 debut was always going to make a seismic chart impact.

The album – which features new recordings of the 13 tracks originally on 1989, as well as of three bonus tracks from the album’s deluxe editions, and five songs from that period seeing release for the first time – unsurprisingly dominated streaming services upon its release. Spotify announced that Swift had set the record not only for the best single-day performance for an album on the DSP, but for any single artist – breaking her own record, natch, previously set with the release day of last October’s Midnights. On the most recent Spotify Daily Top Songs USA chart (for Nov. 1), Swift still all of the top five spots, led by the Taylor’s Versions of new-old songs “Is It Over Now” and “Now That We Don’t Talk.”

Sales for the set have of course been massive. Billboard reported on Wednesday that in its first five days of release, the set had already posted a million in sales – making it her sixth album to pass the seven-digit mark in its first week. The album is available in 15 different physical variants, including five different-colored vinyl options (with a Target Exclusive version that also includes a bonus track re-recording of soundtrack song “Sweeter Than Fiction”), eight CD options (several with folded posters included), a multi-colored cassette, and a digital edition with a bonus track new version of 1989 single “Bad Blood,” featuring a re-recorded guest verse by rap superstar Kendrick Lamar.

1989 is already easily the best-performing Taylor’s Version for its debut week – sailing past the previous first-week high in units set by her re-recorded Speak Now (716,000) earlier this year. Will it also pass the first-week number set by the original 1989 back in 2014? That album also breezed by the million mark in its first week, ultimately posting 1.287 million in first-week sales. The new 1989 should certainly at least be in range of that, with the set already over a million in sales alone through the first five days of the tracking week, with two days’ worth of consumption still left to be accounted for.

If it can pass the original 1989, then Swift will have just one more of her own albums to pass for her best first-week performance ever: Midnights, which debuted with a staggering 1.578 million total units moved in November 2022 — of which 1.14 million were in straight sales.

IN THE MIX

SEVENTEEN, SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN (Pledis): Everyone is likely just competing for second on the Billboard 200 this week behind Taylor Swift, but South Korean boy band SEVENTEEN – who reached No. 2 on the chart in April with their FML EP — should have one of the week’s best-sellers with new EP SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN. As is common with major K-pop releases, the set’s sales will be bolstered by 16 collectible CD editions of the album, including exclusive versions sold via Barnes & Noble, Target and Walmart, all with branded merchandise items inside (like stickers and photo cards).

Brent Faiyaz, Larger Than Life (ISO Supremacy/UnitedMasters): If fortune favors the bold, hopefully R&B star Brent Faiyaz will be rewarded for surprise-releasing his new Larger Than Life set in the shadow cast by a Taylor Swift release week. The 14-track effort is currently only available in physical form as a pre-order for Nov. 20, but should perform fairly well on streaming – with guest appearances by Missy Elliott, Coco Jones, A$AP Rocky and other big names – and benefit from the momentum of 2022’s well-received Wasteland, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 last July.

Various Artists, The Nightmare Before Christmas: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Disney) / Michael Jackson, Thriller (Epic): ‘Tis the season, and with Halloween officially passing on Tuesday, you can bet a number of holiday favorites will see big gains on the charts. Those will most likely be led by the Danny Elfman-composed soundtrack to the Tim Burton-produced perennial favorite The Nightmare Before Christmas (celebrating its 30th anniversary this year) and Michael Jackson’s Thriller, one of the most decorated albums in the chart’s history. If enough folks get in the holiday spirit this year, then Nightmare — which has spent 24 weeks on the Billboard 200 and sits at No. 54 on this week’s chart (dated Nov. 4) — may have a shot of passing its prior No. 22 peak, set around this time last year.

Mastercard Unites with Live Nation to Offer Cardholders ‘Priceless’ Concert Opportunities

It’s undeniable that concerts and live events are in full swing. Now, Mastercard is helping cardholders connect to their passion for music with a new Live Nation partnership.

Billboard can reveal that Mastercard and Live Nation have united for a multi-year collaboration, offering over 100 million international cardholders exclusive access to some of the most exciting concerts, beginning January 2024. Among the access includes concert presale tickets, premium seats and VIP experiences through priceless.com. The initiative is set to hit 19 different markets across Europe and Asia, including Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Japan, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Kingdom.

The Mastercard and Live Nation partnership will also back Mastercard’s Priceless Planet Coalition project, which aims to restore 100 million trees. Cardholders will have the opportunity to contribute to the goal by donating to plant a tree when they purchase a concert ticket during their Mastercard presale event.

“At Mastercard, we’re constantly seeking new ways to enrich our cardholders’ lives, in moments big and small,” Raja Rajamannar, chief marketing and communications officer for Mastercard, said in a statement. “Like nothing else, music excites us, inspires us and unites us. In partnership with Live Nation, we’re delighted to bring our cardholders closer to their passion for music through this extraordinary set of benefits.”

Mastercard and Live Nation’s partnership is the latest move on the former’s end to connect the dots between fans and artists. Earlier this year, the company helped rising talent learn about the ways the Web3 landscape can benefit artist branding and music releases with their Mastercard Artist Accelerator program

To coincide with the announcement, Billboard spoke with Rajamannar about the news and why the initiative is a priority for the company.

Why was it important for Mastercard to diversify product benefits for cardholders in the music space?

Music is a universal passion, with an astounding 97% of concert goers agreeing that there is something magical about experiencing music with others. At Mastercard, we’re constantly seeking new ways to enrich our cardholders’ lives. Providing eligible cardholders in Asia-Pacific and Europe with priority access to concert presale tickets, not to mention premium seats and unforgettable VIP experiences and is, dare I say, truly priceless.

This partnership will allow international cardholders across 19 geographies access to various concert opportunities through priceless.com. What makes the timing of this partnership so valuable for music fans?

Demand for live music is at an all-time high globally, and 2023 is on track to be the industry’s biggest year on record. We’re seeing how live music continues to steer the cultural dialogue. Our partnership with Live Nation, which hosts concerts with some of the world’s biggest musical artists, will allow us to bring more than 100 million cardholders closer to their passion for music. Whether you’re in Sydney or Singapore, Paris or Rome, the benefits we’re offering cardholders are truly extraordinary.

What shifts have you noticed in consumer preferences that made this campaign possible?

We’ve long known that experiences matter more than things, but the absence of those live experiences was acutely felt during the pandemic. We’ve seen tremendous demand for things like travel, nights out on the town, good meals with friends and family and – of course – concerts. On priceless.com, we’ve curated an exciting set of exceptional Priceless Experiences for our cardholders, like a weekend photo safari exploring local villages in Cappadocia or indulging in a six-course meal suspended high above the ground in Bali. These amazing concert benefits through Live Nation, not to mention other perks like ridesharing and restaurant offers, are helping our cardholders maximize every moment, big and small.

We see that Mastercard is constructing a bridge between live music and taking care of the environment. Why?

While music is one major passion point for consumers, we know that caring for our environment is another. We founded the Priceless Planet Coalition with Conservation International and World Resources Institute with the goal of restoring 100 million trees with the help of countless partners, cardholders and others around the world. Restoration focuses on the places that can deliver the greatest impact for the climate, communities and biodiversity. Through our collaboration with Live Nation, when a concert ticket is purchased through a Mastercard presale event, cardholders will be able to make a donation to help restore a tree. Together, these small actions can make a big difference.

Offset and Quavo Pay Tribute to TakeOff on 1-Year Anniversary of Killing: ‘Can’t Forget It Won’t Forget It NEVER Forget It’

Offset and Quavo paid tribute to their late Migos bandmate TakeOff on Wednesday (Nov. 1) on the first anniversary of the rapper’s fatal shooting at a Houston bowling alley. “Can’t forget it won’t Forget it NEVER Forget it [rocket, infinity emoji] Remember!” Quavo wrote in an Instagram post featuring a photo of his nephew.

Offset also got emotional about marking a year since the loss of his rap partner. “The times we spent is priceless what we built in this game they never wanted to give us our flowers we influenced the world…I Love you Take you still here with us I just know you are!!!! Migo 4Life!!!!!!,” he wrote along with a video of the Migos in happier times set to Dripset’s 2019 track “Last Memory.”

TakeOff (born Kirshnik Khari Ball), 28, was shot and killed early in the morning on Nov. 1, 2022 while attending a private party with Quavo at 810 Billiards & Bowling in downtown Houston. Investigators said shots rang out during the an afterparty attended by several dozen people, with TakeOff pronounced dead at the scene of what the Harris County coroner’s office said was “penetrating gunshot wounds of head and torso into arm.”

In the wake of the shooting, Quavo has stepped up to advocate against gun violence, meeting privately with some powerful political figures — including Vice President Kamala Harris — in September and speaking on a panel about combatting the issue during the Congressional Black Caucus legislative conference in Washington. “We need to do better with the control of guns,” Quavo said at the time. “We need to figure out how do we keep these types of incidents from happening to people going anywhere and thinking they can hurt somebody where it shouldn’t happen.”

A Texas grand jury indicted TakeOff’s alleged shooter, Patrick Xavier Clark, on murder charges in May; another man allegedly involved in the incident. Cameron Joshua, 22, was arrested and charged with the unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Britney Spears Celebrates ‘The Woman in Me’ Hitting No. 1 on NYT Best-Seller List: ‘It Means the World to Me’

Britney Spears has a lot to celebrate this week. In fact she has 1.1 million reasons to pop corks because, according to the Associated Press her tell-all memoir, The Woman in Me, sold that many copies in its first week. The sales figures cover pre-orders, print sales, 3-books and audiobook versions of the book that was released on Oct. 24.

“Thank you to all the fans who made #TheWomanInMe a #1 @nytimes bestseller,” Spears tweeted along with a mind-blown emoji. “it means the world to me !!! Love you all [three kiss emoji] !!!”

Spears has not done any traditional promotion for the book beyond posting about it on her social media feeds — with no late night appearances and no interviews — and though the singer claimed on Instagram on the day of release that the book was “the highest selling celebrity memoir in history,” AP noted that it’s not even the best-selling memoir of this year. Prince Harry’s memoir, Spare, sold 1.6 million copies in the U.S. during its first week on sale in January.

“I poured my heart and soul into my memoir, and I am grateful to my fans and readers around the world for their unwavering support,” Spears said in a statement released Wednesday by publisher Gallery Books.

The book chronicles Spears’ rise to fame, her relationship with fellow child star Justin Timberlake — which included her getting pregnant and having an abortion during their time together — as well as her life under a highly restrictive 13-year conservancy. The hype surrounding the book also provided a bump to Spears’ catalog, with streams up 21% in the days leading up to its release.

Kate Bush Announces Physical Album Reissues Ahead of Rock Hall Induction

Kate Bush celebrates her extraordinary comeback with a reissue of her albums in physical formats.

The enigmatic English singer’s label Fish People is pulling the trigger on “unlimited editions” of her reissued albums, spanning her 10 studio efforts, including U.K. No. 1s Hounds of Love and Never for Ever, The Dreaming, and her debut The Kick Inside, plus the remix album Director’s Cut.

“It’s been great fun putting together these new versions, including the colored vinyl for independent record stores,” comments Bush in a statement.

“They’ve been designed as a ‘set’. It’s very exciting to see the resurgence of appreciation for the physical presence of albums released on vinyl. It’s how it’s always been for me, especially when I was a teenager. The whole buzz of the record store was part of the experience. Buying an album was an event.”

She continues, “There’s a special emotional connection that happens between the possessor of an album, the music and the artwork, when it exists in the real world. It’s something we can treasure in a unique way.”

The reissues feature the remastered audio from a 2018 campaign, when Bush’s entire musical output was released on vinyl across four box sets, including songs that had never before been pressed on wax.

The release campaign caps a thrilling resurgence for Bush in recent years. Powered by the fourth season of Stranger Things, Bush’s 1985 hit “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God”) became a chart phenomenon all over again.

By mid-2022, she was No. 1 on Hot 100 Songwriters Chart, and the song had logged multiple weeks at No. 1 in Australia and the U.K., where she was anointed as the oldest female artist ever to lead the Official U.K. Singles Chart (at 63 years and 11 months). This Friday (Nov. 3), Bush will be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, during a ceremony that will air live on Disney+.

“I hope you enjoy these reissues,” writes Bush. “A great deal of care and thought has gone into them.”

‘He Would Have Loved That’: Paul McCartney Reflects on Bringing John Lennon’s Vocals to Life on The Beatles’ ‘Now And Then’

The release of a new Beatles record, a band that officially split in 1970, is rare as hen’s teeth, and a legitimate cause for celebration.

That time has almost come, with “Now And Then” set to drop Thursday (Nov. 2) at 10am ET, followed 24-hours later by the release of an official music video, directed by Lord of the Rings mastermind Peter Jackson, marking the Oscar-winner’s first foray into the short format.

Described as the “last Beatles song,” “Now And Then” began life as a demo written and sung by John Lennon, was later developed and worked on by Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, and now finally finished by Paul and Ringo, the surviving members of The Beatles, more than 40 years after the group began work on it.

No Beatles project is complete without a deep-dive, multi-channel exploration, which is what the band provides with a new 12-minute documentary, a companion piece to the song and video.

Directed by Oliver Murray and featuring input from McCartney, Starr, the late Harrison, Jackson, and Sean Ono Lennon, Now And Then – The Last Beatles Song is an origin story, tracing the tale of a bold project undertaken in February 1995 by Paul, George and Ringo, a studio mission that would get the old band back together.

“Real Love” and “Free as a Bird” both arrived, fresh, in 1995, as part of the Beatles Anthology project. But “Now And Then” remained unfinished — “languishing in a cupboard,” is how McCartney describes it — partly due to the technological limitations of the time.

The late Lennon’s vocals were recorded to tape in the 1970s, and remained there until Jackson found a solution. The New Zealander and his team developed a technology for the three-part documentary series Get Back, which paved the path for Lennon’s vocals to be uncoupled from his piano part.

Game on.

“He was always making demos,” Sean says of his dad in the short film, now streaming on YouTube, “and I do remember him recording into these tape cassette recorders. Mum had these handful of songs that my dad hadn’t finished. And she gave them to the other Beatles.”

Recounting the first attempts at converting Lennon’s rough cut into a Beatles diamond, McCartney says, “we listened to the track. There’s John in his apartment in New York City, banging away at his piano, doing a little demo. Is it something we shouldn’t do? Every time I thought, like that, I thought ‘wait a minute.’ Let’s say I had a chance to ask John. ‘Hey John, would you like us to finish this last song of yours?’ I’m telling you, I know the answer would have been ‘yeah.’ He would have loved that.”

Sean agrees. “My dad would have loved that, because he was never shy to experiment with recording technology. I think it’s really beautiful.”

“Now And Then” has been named as Radio 1’s Hottest Record, and will be issued as a double A-side single with “Love Me Do,” through Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe.

Usher Says His Super Bowl Halftime Prep ‘Started 30 Years Ago’

While Usher‘s blockbuster Las Vegas residency is one reason he landed the 2024 Super Bowl halftime show, he makes it clear in a new interview that his preparation began long before his recent Vegas stint.

“When I got the call, I was like, ‘Man, I’ve been working really hard my entire career,’” he told Extra. “The preparation didn’t start within the last two years of performing in Las Vegas. It really started 30 years ago, and my commitment to it and the journey that I’ve taken musically is why I think I’m given that moment.”

He got that call from Jay-Z — the chairman and founder of Roc Nation, which has produced the Super Bowl halftime show since Jennifer Lopez and Shakira took the stage in Miami in 2020 — and Usher recalled Hov telling him: “It’s your magic moment. This is it. This is your Michael moment.”

“I was like, ‘That’s a lot of pressure, bro,’” Usher laughed. “But so many incredible artists that I respect played that stage, whether it was Beyoncé, Prince. … It’s like, ‘Wow, it’s the most compact 13 minutes of your life.’”

So what can fans expect from the halftime gig? “You’re going to get hit records,” he teased. “I do want to play the songs that people obviously recognize and the ones that I celebrate. I’ve been able to laugh, I have been able to cry, I have been vulnerable, I’ve been telling and honest. … I found really great ways to help us communicate better through my music and that celebration is inside this curation.”

He also hinted that some guests could possibly join him onstage at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium. “I’ve also collaborated with a lot of people in the process, so… there’s a celebration there. … I just gave it all to you. You gotta decode it.”

We’ll have to wait until Feb. 11 to fully decode what Usher has planned. “It doesn’t get any bigger,” Usher said of the Super Bowl spot.

Celine Dion Makes First Appearance in More Than 3 Years Amid Battling Stiff-Person Syndrome

Amid an ongoing battle with Stiff-Person Syndrome, Celine Dion has made her first public appearance in more than three years by attending an NHL game at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Monday night.

The “My Heart Will Go On” singer attended the game — a face-off between her hometown team, the Montreal Canadiens, and the Las Vegas Golden Knights — with her three sons, 22-year-old René-Charles and 13-year-old twins Eddy and Nelson. Following the game, the hitmaker spoke with the Canadiens team, giving them advice on how to persevere and maintain their health, in addition to shaking hands and posing for photos.

The team shared a video of them meeting with Dion to its Instagram page on Tuesday, along with the caption, “When Quebec emblems meet in Las Vegas…”

Fans in the comments section were delighted to see the 57-year-old looking lively and in good spirits. “God we missed her so so bad!! So glad to finally see you again Queen @celinedion!!” one fan wrote, while another user added, “Celine it’s a magic to see you again finally! Stay strong and healthy! We miss you so badly!!!”

The five-time Grammy winner’s appearance comes after she revealed in December 2022 her diagnosis of Stiff-Person Syndrome, a rare condition marked by uncontrolled and severe muscle spasms that affects one in a million individuals.

“As you know, I’ve always been an open book. And I wasn’t ready to say anything before,” she said a Dec. 8 video. “But I’m ready now… ’I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time, and it’s been really difficult for me to face these challenges and to talk about everything that I’ve been going through.”

After explaining her symptoms and how her team came to the conclusion of her diagnosis, Dion added, “Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life. Sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to. I have to admit it’s been a struggle. All I know is singing, it’s what I’ve done all my life.”

As a result, Dion’s 2023 tour dates were either canceled or pushed back to 2024.

See Dion chat with hockey players post-game in the video below.
