Tyla’s ‘Water’ Rises to No. 1 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Chart

Tyla takes over Billboard’s Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart as her breakthrough single, “Water” rises to No. 1 on the list dated Dec. 2. The track springs from No. 4 to crown the chart after a 14% surge in plays that made it the most played song on U.S. monitored mainstream R&B/hip-hop radio stations in the week ending Nov. 23, according to Luminate.

Through its double-digit gain, “Water” wins the Greatest Gainer honor, awarded each week to the song with the largest increase in plays among the chart’s 40 titles. As it reaches the summit, “Water” pushes Victoria Monet’s “On My Mama” to second place after two weeks in charge.

Thanks to “Water,” released on Fax Records/Epic Records, Epic Records returns to No. 1 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay for the first time in just over a year. Future’s “Wait for U,” featuring Drake and Tems, was the label’s last leader, completing a record 16th week at No. 1 on the chart dated Oct. 29, 2022.

As “Water” reigns on the plays-based Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, the radio smash repeats at a No. 5 high on the audience-based R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay list, which ranks songs by combined audience impression totals from adult R&B and mainstream R&B/hip-hop stations. There, “Water” added 14% in weekly audience to reach a new best of 15.8 million.

In addition to the R&B/hip-hop wins, “Water” flows 7-4 on Rhythmic Airplay, following a huge 27% increase in weekly plays at the format. Pop radio also has embraced the tune, with a 28-21 on the newest Pop Airplay list after a 41% hike in weekly plays. Armed with strong results from the R&B/hip-hop, rhythmic and pop sectors, “Water” is knocking on the door of the top 10 of the all-genre Radio Songs chart with a 17-11 ascent and 24% weekly improvement in audience to 38.4 million.

The rapid “Water” radio rise joins with the song’s growing sales and streaming profile to fuel the track’s high placements on several Billboard multimetric charts. Notably, the song wins a seventh week atop the sales and streaming-powered U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart, while also climbing the radio, sales and streaming-driven Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (5-4) and Billboard Hot 100 (15-10) charts.

Cardi B Jams Out to Lady Gaga’s ‘Beautiful, Dirty Rich’ While Dressed in Her Holiday Finest

Cardi B is getting into the holiday spirit. In a pair of videos uploaded on Tuesday (Nov. 28), the “Bongos” rapper showed off what she called her “two moods,” showing off a pair of clips in which she grooves to Lady Gaga’s 2008 The Fame song “Beautiful, Dirty Rich” while rocking a voluminous red gown that showed off her legs.

The promo shoot for Cardi’s Whipshots alcohol-infused whip cream novelty found Cardi holding up a cup of the creamy libation and striking a series of poses as a person off-camera shouts out encouragement and suggestions for different looks. In the second video, Cardi stripped down to a red bodysuit and matching fur coat while waving around two cans of Whipshots as she rapped along to Lil Boosie’s “Set It Off.”

The video post came after Whipshots posted an image from its holiday flavors campaign earlier this week, which includes a festive peppermint flavor. In an Instagram post promoting the new products, the Whipshots account wrote, “The holidays are all about coming together and getting lit – and we’re not just talking about the Christmas tree, Fam. Elevate your celebrations with Whipshots Peppermint vodka whipped cream – the perfect stocking stuffer to bring the bougie to your holiday bash. (Besides, bringing a bottle of wine for your friends and family is so been there, drank that!).”

Cardi partnered with Starco Brands on the boozy non-dairy whipped cream in December 2021, which sold its first million cans in just 10 months, selling another million cans over the next four months.

How to Find Your 2023 Spotify Wrapped

‘Tis the season to learn about your music habits throughout the year with Spotify Wrapped, the annual breakdown of how you’ve been listening to music.

While Spotify Wrapped is available for anyone with an account, sometimes, it can be hard to find. Don’t worry, though, Billboard‘s got your back. Unlike last year, the 2023 Spotify Wrapped is not limited to only the Spotify mobile app, which you can download at Spotify.com/Wrapped as usual, and to make sure you have the latest version, which you’ll need to access Wrapped. The platform this year is making Wrapped available via desktop and mobile, also at Spotify.com/Wrapped.

Once you’ve logged in, your personalized look back at 2023 should appear at the top of your home screen. After watching and learning about your listening habits, you’ll be able to share your Wrapped results to social media.

In addition to being accessible via desktop and mobile, Spotify is rolling out a few new features for Wrapped this year, including:

  • Me in 2023 reveals what the platform calls the 12 “characters that best describe the way you listened to Spotify this year.” For example, the “Alchemist” is someone who created more playlists than others, while the “Shapeshifter” is a listener who jumps from artist to artist. Depending on listening habits, users will be revealed to be one of the characters.
  • Sound Town matches listeners to a city according to their “listening and shared artist affinity.”
  • Wrapped is getting a refresh, including how Top 5 Genres will appear “with a new sandwich-inspired design, while Top 5 Artists will show when “your listening peaked for each artist.”
  • Your Artist Messages in Wrapped is where users will find a video message from one of their top artists. (Listeners can also check out the Wrapped feed, where 40,000 artists — from Swift to Peso Pluma and SZA — will have video messages for fans.)

SEVENTEEN, NewJeans Are Top Winners at 2023 MAMA Awards

SEVENTEEN was the top winner at the 2023 MAMA Awards, which were held over two nights, Nov. 28 and 29, at Tokyo Dome, Japan. The group won five awards – album of the year for FML; best male group and best dance performance male group, both for “Super”; bibigo culture & style and worldwide fans’ choice.

SEVENTEEN was one of 10 winners in the latter category, along with ATEEZ, BTS, ENHYPEN, Lim Young Woong, NCT DREAM, Stray Kids, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, TWICE and ZEROBASEONE.

NewJeans was a close runner-up in total number of awards, with four – artist of the year and three awards for their hit “Ditto” – song of the year, best female group and best dance performance female group.

BTS, JISOO and ZEROBASEONE each won three awards. ATEEZ, Jung Kook and TREASURE each won two.

Jung Kook won both of his awards – best dance performance male solo and best collaboration – for “Seven” featuring Latto. The track was a global hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Awards were presented in more than 20 categories. There are the usual five or six nominees in most categories, but in the big four categories – artist, song and album of the year and worldwide fans’ choice – there are dozens of entries. All artists who were nominated in one of the subordinate categories were automatically nominated there — an unusual approach for an award show to take.

In the worldwide fans’ choice category, winners were determined by global fan votes. There were two rounds of voting on the K-culture platform Mnet Plus and on Spotify, which is also one of the sponsors for this year’s awards.

Jimin and Tomorrow X Together were the leading nominees for the 2023 MAMA Awards, which were announced Oct. 19. Each received eight nominations.

Jimin won best male artist, beating two fellow members of BTS – Jung Kook and V. The other nominees in the category were Lim Young Woong, Parc Jae Jung and TAEYANG.

The nominees for album of the year included three albums that topped the Billboard 200 in 2023: Tomorrow X Together’s The Name Chapter: Temptation, Stray Kids’ 5-STAR and NewJeans’ Get Up.

While many Western awards shows are moving toward gender-neutral categories, fully half of the 20 categories here are gendered. There are separate male and female categories for best artist, best group, best new artist, best dance performance solo and best dance performance group.

First-night performers included &TEAM, Dynamicduo, ENHYPEN, INI, JO1, JUST B, Kep1er, Lee Young Ji, STREET WOMAN FIGHTER 2, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, TVXQ!, xikers and Yoshiki.

In addition, JAEHYUN of BOYNEXTDOOR, HONG EUNCHAE of LE SSERAFIM, ANTON of RIIZE, CHOI HYUN SUK, YOSHI, HARUTO of TREASURE and ZHANG HAO of ZEROBASEONE appeared for special collaborations.

Second-night performers included ATEEZ, BOYNEXTDOOR, EL7Z UP, (G)I-DLE, LE SSERAFIM, Monika, NiziU, RIIZE, SEVENTEEN, TREASURE and ZEROBASEONE.

Also, XIAOTING of Kep1er and Bada Lee from STREET WOMAN FIGHTER 2 appeared on stage.

Videos of the performance can be watched on the official YouTube channel, Mnet K-POP.

The MAMA Awards, which bills itself as the world’s foremost K-pop awards, is presented by entertainment company CJ ENM. This year’s eligibility period ran from Oct. 22, 2022, through Sept. 30, 2023. The show aired live on various global platforms, including CJ ENM’s music channel Mnet.

Taylor Swift Drops ‘You’re Losing Me’ on Streaming to Celebrate Being Spotify’s Most Streamed Artist

There’s no more blank space anymore for this song! Taylor Swift was named Spotify‘s most streamed artist on Wednesday (Nov. 29), and to thank fans for the honor, she gave them what they’ve been asking for: “You’re Losing Me (From the Vault)” on streaming services.

“Um ok this is unreal?? I just wanted to say to anyone who listened to my music this year, anywhere in the world, thank you. Getting named Spotify’s Global Top Artist in 2023 is truly the best birthday/holiday gift you could’ve given me. We’ve seriously had THE MOST fun this year out there on tour and now this. Are you serious,” she wrote. “So I was trying to think of a way to thank you, and a lot of you have been asking me to put “You’re Losing Me (From the Vault)” on streaming… so here you go! You can finally listen EVERYWHERE now [kiss emoji]”

The track is off Midnights (The Late Night Edition), which is a special edition of the 2022 album released first to Swifties who attended the May 26, 2023, Eras Tour concert held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Then later that night, Swift’s webstore released the digital download, which was available for 24 hours only.

“You’re Losing Me” is an emotional ballad set to a heartbeat, and details a slow, painful ending of a long romance. Fans surmised that the track is about Swift’s split from Joe Alwyn, her partner of six years; their breakup made headlines in April.

In the first verse, the 12-time Grammy winner sings, “You say, ‘I don’t understand’ and I say, ‘I know you don’t’/ We thought a cure would come through in time, now, I fear it won’t/ Remember lookin’ at this room, we loved it ’cause of the light/ Now, I just sit in the dark and wonder if it’s time.”

In the heart-wrenching bridge, Swift croons, “And I wouldn’t marry me either/ A pathological people pleaser/ Who only wanted you to see her/ And I’m fading, thinkin’/ Do something, babe, say something/ Lose something, babe, risk something/ Choose something, babe, I got nothing/ To believe, unless you’re choosing me.”

Inside Latin Music’s Year-End Charts: Can Karol G Help More Women Cut Through?

Women ruled the recent 2023 Latin Grammy awards, with Karol G, Shakira and Natalia Lafourcade sweeping in the main categories (Album, Record and Song of the year, respectively) and a fourth woman, Joaquina, winning Best New Artist. It was the first time in Latin Grammy history that women won in all the general categories.

See latest videos, charts and news

Despite that heady moment, Billboard’s year-end charts tell a different story. There, women are as scarce as ever, with only three of — Karol G (at No. 3), Shakira (at No. 14) and Rosalía (No. 17) — landing among the top 20 of the year-end Top Latin Artists Chart.

On the Hot Latin Songs year-end chart, the situation is better — though a bit misleading. Among the top 50 tracks, 11 are led by women. But of those, six are by Karol G and three by Shakira (including their collaboration “TQG”). The list also includes Becky G’s “Chanel” alongside Peso Pluma and Rosalía’s “Beso” alongside Rauw Alejandro.

The narrative continues on the year-end Top Latin Albums chart, where only five albums by women are in the top 20. Three are by Karol G, one is Selena’s perennially popular Ones and the fifth is Rosalía with last year’s Motomami.

In other words, without Karol G, representation for women on the year-end Latin charts would be even more bleak. And it’s nothing new. Save for less than a handful of names like Selena, Shakira and now, Karol G, women have maintained a very limited presence on the Latin charts. Through the years, that absence has been attributed to a multitude of factors including: lack of women executives championing women acts; lack of label support; the rise of male-dominated reggaetón; and now, the rise of male-dominated regional Mexican.

The situation is even more maddening considering that the past few years have been rife with successful new Latin artists, yet most of whom are men, including the top five new artists of the year: Peso Pluma, Grupo Frontera, Yng Lvcas, Bizarrap and Chino Pacas.

So what more do these five newcomers all have in common? They collaborate incessantly and have all had initial, visible support from established artists. Peso Pluma, for example, got an early boost from Luis R. Conríquez, who invited him to collaborate on a couple of singles; Peso Pluma then returned the favor with Yng Lvcas on “La bebe.” Bad Bunny famously collaborated with Grupo Frontera on “Un X100to” when the Texan band was just starting; Chino Pacas is a protégé of Fuerza Regida and its frontman, JOP; and even Bizarrap got his start by collaborating with his peers in Argentina.

While all-women collaborations abound, it’s still unusual to see a major, established woman artist bring other rising women acts to the fray. The major exceptions include iconic pop star Thalia, who for years has been collaborating with rising artists of every stripe. And, more recently, Karol G, who has been steadily generous in inviting artists who are less established to collaborate.

This fall, for example, the Colombian star had Young Miko open up several of her stadium shows, and each of her past three albums has featured at least one up-and-coming woman: Young Miko guests on Bichota Season (2023), Bad Gyal on Mañana será bonito (2023) and Mariah Angelique on KG0516.

“I understand how hard it is [for women to break through] because of how hard it was for me,” Karol said in a recent Billboard interview. For her, the early support of more established stars at the time, like Nicky Jam, J Balvin and Ozuna was crucial. “Each day is a challenge,” she adds. “There’s so much music, so many artists and platforms, so, so much, that standing out is harder than before.”

In all fairness, women’s standing on other genre year-end charts is similar: There are four women in the top 20 of the year-end R&B/Hip-Hop chart and three on the year-end Country chart. On the all genre year-end tally, there are a total of five women, including Taylor Swift at No. 1.

But for women in Latin, numbers have remained stubbornly low for over a decade, and actually declined during that time. In the 2000s, 23 albums by women reached No. 1 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart. In the 2010s, the number dipped to 19. So far this decade, only three women-led albums have reached No. 1 and two of them are by, you guessed it, Karol G.

On Hot Latin Songs, 39 women-led tracks topped the chart in the 2000s; in the 2010s, the number went down to 14; so far this decade, there have been eight.

There is indeed room for improvement over the remaining six years of the 2020s, both on the charts and beyond. Already, there is a concerted effort afoot within labels and music companies to increase the number of Latina executives in senior ranks.

At Sony Latin Iberia, COO María Fernández has articulated a plan to help prepare the next generation of executives, “especially women,” she says. “I’ve dedicated a lot of time to that and I feel very proud of the accomplishments in terms of getting them ready to be promoted, changing jobs, doing new things in the organization.”

Having another woman in the room, of course, is no guarantee of success, but having someone else in the room who can emphatize with certain situations — pregnancy, maternity leave, touring with children, body image and more — is important.

Another major point of contention has long been the lack of women producers and songwriters in the Latin world, though the latter is growing. And there’s a clear increase of women credits on major hits.

So the question is, when will this trickle down into concrete representation not just on paper, but on the charts?

It’s not just about what receives promotion, but also, what connects with fans. It’s heartening to see that many of the rising artists like Young Miko, Gale and Joaquina are eschewing the overplayed trope of the over-sexualized Latina artist in favor of honest songwriting and originality.

Which is exactly what the women artists currently on the charts have managed to do so well.

The five-hour broadcast will cross multiple time zones, with the traditional countdown at midnight ET, culminating with the Nashville music note drop and fireworks at midnight CT.

In addition to her hosting duties, King joins the performance lineup this year and will perform her hits from Nashville’s Bicentennial Mall stage.

“New Year’s Eve is the one party we celebrate all over the world,” King said in a statement. “I wouldn’t want to spend it any other place than Music City! I’m so excited to get to host another beautiful night of music, friends, love, and joy. I can’t wait to celebrate an incredible year and welcome a new one together.”

“Being back in Nashville co-hosting with my girl Elle is something I look forward to every year,” Smith added. “We’re gonna put on one heck of a show from Music City, and Nashville’s Big Bash will be the perfect soundtrack to ring in another year with family and friends.”

New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash is executive produced by Robert Deaton and Mary Hilliard Harrington in partnership with the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp. The special will be directed by Sandra Restrepo.

Hilliard Harrington said in a statement, “Nashville has quickly become one of the hottest destinations for New Year’s Eve, and we get to throw a huge party with the best artists and fans of any genre of music. We are thrilled to be in business with CBS and look forward to working with them for years to come.”

Olivia Rodrigo Says Writing ‘GUTS’ Album ‘Tested My Confidence and Patience’

Olivia Rodrigo says she learned a very important lesson when writing the songs for her sophomore album GUTS: you can’t try to please all the people all the time. “The experience tested my confidence and patience. It taught me some important lessons about songwriting in terms of focusing on your craft rather than just waiting for inspiration to strike,” she told Variety magazine.

Most importantly, though, Rodrigo, 20, said the sessions for the LP taught her how to zero in on the mindset that is most important to writing good songs. “You can never sit down at the piano and try to write something that everyone will like; that always results in a really bad song. It taught me that I write songs that I want to hear,” she said.

Her second collaboration with producer/co-writer Dan Nigro has spawned the hit “Vampire” and recently racked up six Grammy nominations, including her first nod in the best rock song category for the grunge pop rager “ballad of a homeschooled girl.” While there was pressure to deliver a smash follow-up to her Grammy-winning 2021 debut, Sour, Rodrigo said she Rwas once again laser-focused on being as real as possible.

“Honest songwriting. It’s what I’ve gravitated towards my whole life — music that helps you process what you’re feeling or comforts you when you’re feeling these big feelings,” she said of what she hopes audiences take away from her songs. “It’s just nice to know that someone else is experiencing them. It makes you feel less alone.”

Rodrigo is slated to kick off her GUTS world tour on Feb. 23 with a show in Palm Springs, CA on an outing that is currently slated to keep her on the road through an Aug. 13 show in Los Angeles.

Those messages will show up in top fans’ Wrapped data stories, in the Wrapped feed on the Spotify homescreen and elsewhere.

Additionally this year, artists in the United States and Canada were given the opportunity to reward their top fans in those markets with discounts on select merch items, which will be promoted through the Wrapped experience on Spotify, via email and more. Fans across the globe will also receive concert recommendations from their top artists in the Wrapped feed, the Live Events feed and other off-platform promotion.

One new feature in 2023 is Wrapped listening parties, described as digital live audio experiences that will allow artists to speak directly to their fans and thank them for their support, stream their top tracks of 2023, answer fan questions, sell merch and more. These listening parties will be available to top fans of a select group of artists, including Ava Max, JVKE, Chelsea Culter and Lauren Daigle.

Also available to artists this year is a series of data stories with the following stats: the number of listeners who heard an artist for the first time in 2023, the top three places where touring artists saw the highest ticket sales and the average time spent listening by each of an artist’s top 0.001% of fans. Artists will additionally receive a summary share card highlighting fan engagement, including the number of new listeners, saves and playlists as well as the number of fans who had them as a top artist.

Last but not least, Spotify brought back Songwriter Wrapped for a second straight year. Once again, songwriters and producers with an active songwriter page and “Written By” playlist on the platform will receive an exclusive Songwriter Wrapped experience and share card recapping how the songs they wrote performed on Spotify in 2023. This year, songwriters can also fill out customizable social share forms that will allow them to call out their fellow creators and favorite songwriting or production moments with categories like “My Favorite Songwriter of 2023,” “My Pick for Best Lyrics of 2023,” “My Favorite Producer of 2023,” “My Pick for Best Beat of 2023,” “My Favorite Mixing Engineer of 2023” and “Thank you to my 2023 collaborators.” All are accessible on Spotify’s @SpotifySongwriter Instagram page and here.

Taylor Swift Is Spotify’s Most Streamed Artist of 2023

Are you ready for it? Spotify unveiled its 2023 Wrapped campaign on Wednesday (Nov. 29) and revealed the most streamed artists, songs, albums and podcasts of the year. Taylor Swift, who’s already had a banner year with her massive Eras Tour and the release of two re-recordings, reigned as the streaming platform’s overall top artist, replacing Bad Bunny, who was No. 1 the three previous years.

The 12-time Grammy winner — who nabbed 10 Billboard Music Awards on Nov. 19 — ruled with a massive 26.1 billion streams since Jan. 1. Her 2022 album Midnights was the second most streamed album around the world and her resurgent 2019 album Lover was the seventh. On the song side of things, “Cruel Summer” and “Anti-Hero” were the sixth and 10th most streamed songs globally.

To celebrate the singer/songwriter’s success on the platform, Spotify shared clues around the world 48 hours before revealing Swift to be its top artist of the year, with puzzle pieces on billboards featuring Easter eggs that were capped off with a video and more.

Bad Bunny was the second most streamed global artist of the year; his 2022 hit album Un Verano Sin Ti was the platform’s most streamed album around the world, with 4.5 billion listens. (Spotify confirmed to Billboard in July that the Puerto Rican star’s set had overtaken Ed Sheeran’s Divide as the most streamed album in the platform’s history.) As for the most streamed song globally? That would be Miley Cyrus’ eight-week Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Flowers,” which snagged 1.6 billion streams.

On the podcast side of things, The Joe Rogan Experience was tops for the fourth year in a row, with Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy coming in at No. 2.

Also as part of Spotify Wrapped’s Wednesday reveal, the platform rolled out its popular annual Wrapped feature, which lets users review and share their listening habits of 2023.
