The 25 Best K-Pop Albums of 2023

TXT and aespa crafted career-best collections, (G)I-DLE, Suga and NCT DREAM discussed important topics and ATEEZ, ONEW and V created musical worlds.

Partly for the prolific volume of projects artists release each year and partly for the fluid definition of an album (running anywhere from three to 13 tracks), an annual ranking of K-pop albums is never easy. As South Korea continues to extend its global musical influence, certain projects transcend hit-song compilations, presenting larger visions and conceptual narratives.

In 2023, stars like V, WOODZ and ONEW used their latest solo projects to share the music that inspires them at their core as artists and let listeners settle into sonic worlds they’ve developed. Meanwhile, artists like IVE, SEVENTEEN, Kim Sejeong, TOMORROW X TOGETHER and BTS’ Suga as Agust D used their projects to show their range as artists whose inspirations run deep and varied, offering satisfying surprises for audiences. Meanwhile, the likes of JOOHONEY, (G)I-DLE, Stray Kids and NCT DREAM used their projects to speak to the topics most important to them and their fans.

While artists who have operated in the Korean entertainment system are typically lumped into an all-encompassing “K-pop” term, several projects that would have caught fans’ attention are challenging to deem as K-pop. A slew of top-notch projects like Jung Kook’s Golden, (G) I-DLE’s Heat, DPR IAN’s Dear Insanity, Mark Tuan’s Fallin’, Yerin Baek’s New Year, Eric Nam’s House on a Hill all deserve their rightful acclaim, but this K-pop list focuses on albums with Korean as the primary language.

In 2023, K-pop represents far more than music from idols as more artists dabble in new genres, soundscapes and inspirations to encompass burgeoning Korean sub-genres in this space. The albums that moved us this year speak to the continuing importance of full-length projects even in an increasingly single-focused global market. Oppa! Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ Video Hits 5 Billion Views on YouTube

Time to party like it’s 2012: Psy‘s culture-shifting “Gangnam Style” music video has officially topped 5 billion views on YouTube, 11 years after its initial release.

The K-pop hit made a massive splash in the summer of 2012, thanks in large part to a music video that saw Psy and a string of quirky co-stars doing the song’s signature galloping and lassoing dance moves. The song went No. 1 around the world, including on Billboard‘s Hot Rap Songs chart, and it peaked at No. 2 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. It also finished at No. 1 on Billboard‘s year-end World Digital Song Sales chart in both 2012 and 2013 and was chosen as one of the Billboard staff’s Songs That Defined the Decade in 2019.

In December 2012, “Gangnam Style” became the first video ever to hit 1 billion views on YouTube, just over 150 days after its debut. The video’s billion-views status remained untouched for more than a year until Justin Bieber’s breakout hit “Baby” — which hit the platform in February 2010 — reached 1 billion views by 2014. Today, “Gangnam Style” stands as the streaming platform’s 11th most popular video, with Pinkfong’s “Baby Shark Dance” coming in at No. 1 and creeping toward 14 billion views. It’s also the fifth most-viewed music video, following Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” (feat. Daddy Yankee), Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You,” Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” (feat. Charlie Puth) and Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” (feat. Bruno Mars).

In a 2017 interview with Billboard celebrating the fifth anniversary of “Gangnam Style,” Psy admitted he was still trying to crack the code of why the song went internationally viral.

“I still don’t know why it was so special,” he said at the time. “If I knew why, I could make it again and again. After five years later, I still have to talk about ‘Gangnam Style.’ If I did it intentionally, it wouldn’t work as strongly. Right now, these days, when I make music or music videos, I try my best to focus and to become [like] me from before ‘Gangnam Style.’ Not to do something intentionally. Doing it with intention takes a lot of effort for things to be natural, so that’s what I’ve felt for the last five years.”

In the spring of 2022, Psy scored a new Hot 100 hit when “That That,” produced by and featuring BTS’ Suga, peaked at No. 80 on the chart.

The video also featured a rendering of the Dove Center, with plans including the Dove Awards Theater, a timeline of the history of the gospel music industry, exhibits highlighting artists’ stories, a Hall of Fame area spotlighting plaques for each member of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame’s approximately 200 members, and exhibits allowing visitors to create and mix their own song. The center will feature exhibit areas with titles including Lift Your Voice, Moving Up The Charts and Created to Worship.

The Gospel Music Association, which puts on the annual GMA Dove Awards, was founded in 1964. The Dove Awards were conceptualized by singer-songwriter Bill Gaither in 1968. The inaugural Dove Awards were held in 1969 in Memphis, Tennessee, before the awards moved to Nashville in 1971. The Awards were held in Atlanta in 2011 and 2012, before returning to Nashville in 2013.

The building that will house the Dove Center is also home to Lipscomb University’s Spark Center. Since 2013, the Gospel Music Association and Lipscomb University have had a partnership, where the annual GMA Dove Awards have been held at Lipscomb University’s Allen Arena, while the Gospel Music Association operates from its headquarters at 4012 Granny White Pike in Nashville, on Lipscomb University’s campus.

This 54th annual GMA Dove Awards winners this year included artist of the year winner Brandon Lake (who picked up four total awards during the evening), while Tasha Cobbs LeonardToby Mac, Blessing Offor and Jeff Pardo each won two awards.

The Dove Center will join several other music-focused museums in Music City, including the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum, the National Museum of African American Music, the Johnny Cash Museum, the Patsy Cline Museum, and the Willie Nelson and Friends museum.

Ariana Grande Says She Felt ‘Deeply Misunderstood’ Amid Public Scrutiny in 2023

Ariana Grande has remained tight-lipped in the face of heightened gossip and public scrutiny surrounding her personal life this past year. But in a recent message shared to Instagram Stories before the new year, she seemed to address how she was affected by the 2023 rumor mill.

“One of the most transformative, most challenging, and yet happiest and most special years of my life,” Grande wrote in her Friday (Dec. 29) post, black text layered over a photo of a Glinda the Good Witch illustration. “There were so many beautiful and yet polarized feelings.”

“I’ve never felt more at the mercy of and in acceptance of what life was screaming to teach me,” she continued. “I have never felt more pride or joy or love while simultaneously feeling so deeply misunderstood by people who don’t know me, who piece whispers together and make what they want out of me and their assumptions of my life.”

The “Positions” singer didn’t specify what instances she was referring to, but there was objectively no greater peak in gossip surrounding Grande this year than when reports of her romance with Wicked costar Ethan Slater surfaced. This was partially due to how closely the news followed the vocalist’s reported split from ex-husband Dalton Gomez, as well as Slater’s own separation from wife Lilly Jay, with whom he shares a young son.

Both TMZ and People, however, reported at the time that the Broadway actor and Grande had started dating after both of their prior relationships were over. The seven-time Billboard Hot 100 topper has since been spotted with Slater only a handful of times, most recently in New York City on a Dec. 23 dinner date with Grande’s father.

“i am reacting to things that deserve my energy only and removing and protecting myself from things that do not,” the “POV” hitmaker continued in her post. “i feel more human than ever. i feel more deeply than ever. i feel softer and stronger, all at once.”

“if you ever feel misunderstood of alone, just remember that it will pass and you are not,” she continued. “take a deep breath and know that you are so incredibly loved.”

This year saw Ariana Grande feature on a remix of The Weeknd’s “Die for You,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100. She has confirmed her highly anticipated seventh album is set for a 2024 release. In 2023, she primarily focused on filming the upcoming live adaptations of Wicked — in which she costars as Glinda opposite Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba — as well as her R.E.M. Beauty business.

The song was originally recorded by Kahan solo, while Hozier joined as a featured artist on the collaborative version released Nov. 10.

The new No. 1 marks two in a row for Kahan, after “Dial Drunk” reigned for two weeks in September, becoming his first leader.

Hozier now boasts five total Adult Alternative Airplay No. 1s, dating to 2014’s “Take Me to Church.” Previously in 2023, he led with “Eat Your Young” in May and “Francesca” in September. He also reached the summit with “Nina Cried Power,” featuring Mavis Staples, in 2018.

Concurrently, “Northern Attitude” jumps 27-22 on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart with 1.4 million audience impressions, according to Luminate. Both acts have earned top 10s on the chart in 2023: Kahan with “Dial Drunk” (No. 3, September) and Hozier with “Eat Your Young” (No. 7, June).

“Northern Attitude” is the latest single from Stick Season, Kahan’s third studio album, which was released in October 2022, followed by a deluxe version this June. The title-track lead single peaked at No. 2 on Adult Alternative Airplay in November 2022, followed by “Homesick” (No. 7, May) and the aforementioned “Dial Drunk.”

On the most recently published, Dec. 30-dated Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, which incorporates streaming, radio airplay and sales data, “Northern Attitude” ranked at No. 12 (after reaching No. 7 in November following the new version’s release). In addition to its radio airplay, the song earned 4.7 million official U.S. streams and sold 1,000 downloads Dec. 15-21.

Stick Season has led the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart for two weeks to date and earned 1.3 million equivalent album units through Dec. 21.

All Billboard charts dated Jan. 6, 2024, will update on Billboard.com on Tuesday, Jan. 2.

Israeli Soldier Killed in Gaza Weeks After Auditioning For Israel’s Eurovision Slot

Shaul Greenglick, an Israeli soldier and Eurovision Song Contest hopeful, has died in combat amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The 26-year-old singer was one of three soldiers recently reported dead by the Israel Defense Forces, per The Times of Israel, following Israel’s intensified ground operations in Palestine.

The country has been in active war with Hamas since the terrorist group attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,139 people — including at least 350 concertgoers at the Nova Music Festival in Re’im, Israel — and taking around 250 people hostage.

Weeks prior to his death, Greenglick auditioned for Israel’s The Next Star, a singing competition series through which the country’s Eurovision contestant is selected, while on furlough. His emotional performance of a song by Israeli singer-songwriter Hanan Ben Ari on Dec. 3 earned him a place in the show’s next round; however, he reportedly dropped out of the contest in order to return to his military duties.

On Friday (Dec. 29), the IDF stated that it will be “extending operations” in the area of Khan Younis in southern Gaza amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region. The United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization has warned that 2.2 million people who live in the war zone are facing acute hunger; meanwhile, the UN Relief and Works Agency has said that over 150,000 civilians “have nowhere to go” to escape the IDF’s military offensives.

At the time of publication, CNN counts the number of people killed in Gaza since October at 21,507. An additional 55,915 people have been injured, although the outlet notes that it is not able to independently verify the numbers provided by the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Eurovision is moving forward. The annual broadcast finds each country in the European Broadcasting Union sending one artist to represent its citizens in an original song and performance contest. All three live Eurovision 2024 programs, both semifinals and the grand final, will air on BBC One on May 7, 9 and 11.

Kim Loaiza Scores First Entry on a Billboard Album Chart With ‘X Amor’

Mexican social media superstar and singer Kim Loaiza earns her first entry on a Billboard album chart as her debut set, X Amor, opens at No. 9 on the Latin Pop Albums chart (dated Dec. 30).

X Amor released Dec. 14 via Warner Latina, debuts in the top 10 with 2,000 equivalent units earned in the U.S. during the Dec. 15-21 tracking week, according to Luminate. Most of the set’s opening sum stems from streaming equivalent album units. That figure equates to 2.82 million on-demand official streams of the album’s tracks for its debut week.

X Amor‘s arrival on the chart follows Loaiza’s first record deal with a major label, however, it bows amidst controversy.

X Amor debuts on the charts a week after Loaiza announced she was walking away from the internet and quitting music following a number of controversies that broke out on Monday, Dec. 18. Those included accusations of plagiarizing Karol G (which she denied on X) and sabotaging Mexican singer-songwriter Kenia Os’ Mazatlán performance (she has not addressed the latter) and admitting on YouTube to lying about a break-up with her decade-long partner and artist JD Pantoja in order to generate publicity.

The 16-track album includes collaborations with Lit Killah, Noriel, Andy Rivera, Omar Montes, Julianno Sosa, Elvis de Yongol, and Pailita; the songs have yet to enter a Billboard chart. Ahead of X Amor on the Dec. 30-dated Latin Pop Albums chart are titles from Luis Fonsi, Becky G, Juan Gabriel, Rosalía, Enrique Iglesias, Kali Uchis, Mana and the late Selena.

BLACKPINK Members Split With YG Entertainment for Solo Endeavors

The members of BLACKPINK are closing out the year with some bombshell newsJennie, Jisoo, Rosé and Lisa have split with YG Entertainment for all solo endeavors.

On Friday (Dec. 29), YG issued a statement announcing the decision. “YG recently signed an extension contract for BLACKPINK’s group activities and agreed not to proceed with a separate additional contract for individual activities,” read a translated statement provided to Billboard by representatives for YG Entertainment. “We will do our best to support BLACKPINK’s activities and will cheer for the individual activities of the members with a warm heart.”

Earlier this month (Dec. 6), via a regulatory filing, YG Entertainment confirmed that BLACKPINK had renewed its contract with the company for all group activities. Details regarding the new contracts were not immediately available upon filing.

Just this week (Dec. 24), Jennie shared that she will be launching a new record label and company called OA. A caption of a photoset posted to the official OA Instagram page reads: “OA, which stands for ODD ATELIER, is a space that aims to create new things that attract attention in a different way from what is usual or expected. It is a label founded by artist JENNIE in November 2023.”

To date, all four members of BLACKPINK have begun their respective solo journeys. In 2021, both Rosé and Lisa unleashed their debut solo albums. Rosé’s -R- contained the single “On the Ground,” which debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. US charts — the first song by a Korean solo artist to do so. With her LaLisa album — which housed a pair of Billboard Hot 100 hits in the title track (No. 84) and “Money” (No. 90) — Lisa became the first soloist to win the MTV Video Music Award for best K-pop.

This spring (Mar. 31), Jisoo released Me, her debut single album. The two-track project was led by “Flower,” which reached No. 2 on the Global 200. Although Jennie was the first BLACKPINK member to go solo back in 2018 (her aptly titled “Solo” peaked atop US World Digital Song Sales), she finally made her Hot 100 debut on the chart dated Dec. 30, 2023, with her Idol hit “One of the Girls” alongside The Weeknd & Lily-Rose Depp. In June, Jennie starred in the controversial Weeknd-produced HBO drama The Idol.

BLACKPINK is, to date, the most successful K-pop girl group in U.S. history. In 2023, the group headlined Coachella and wrapped their blockbuster Born Pink World Tour (which helped them take home top K-pop touring artist at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards) in support of their Billboard 200-topping Born Pink album.

Representatives for BLACKPINK did not immediately respond to Billboard’s request for comment.

Lil Uzi Vert Says They Want to Have All Their Tattoos Removed

Lil Uzi Vert has more tattoos than you can count, but there isn’t a single one that brings a smile to the rapper’s face.

In a recent interview, LA Weekly asked Uzi, “What’s your favorite tattoo?” The 28-year-old musician’s reply? “None of them.”

“I’m trying to get them removed,” they deadpanned. “All of them… I want to go corporate.”

It’s not fully clear whether Uzi was joking or being serious about removing the ink, which is known to be an excruciatingly painful procedure even when the tattoos aren’t on your face, hands and everywhere in between. Last month, however, Uzi gave fans a taste of what they might look like without their signature tats. Without giving any explanation, the “XO Tour Llif3” hitmaker shared a selfie with heavy makeup covering all of their facial ink a couple days after Halloween — see it here.

Billboard has reached out to the musician’s reps for clarification.

Uzi’s tattoos are some of their most defining features (for now). In addition to several words and symbols on their face, as well as a detailed portrait of a Japanese Oni mask and samurai helmet that covers their entire chest and back, the “Just Wanna Rock” artist also shares matching tattoos with Kanye West and Steve Lacy. The trio got the phrase “We here forever technically” etched on their arms in August 2022 and posed for a picture together with their new ink.

The rapper is fresh off the release of their new single “Red Moon,” which dropped on Christmas Day along with a music video. “Red moon out now? ??,” Uzi simply wrote on Instagram upon the project’s debut. “Thank you ♥️.”
