Taylor Swift Set to Reclaim U.K. Chart Title with ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’

With Christmas out of the way, Taylor Swift is eying a return to the U.K. chart throne by week’s end.

Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) (via EMI) leads the midweek U.K. chart, up 2-1, and is on track for a fourth non-consecutive stint at No. 1.

It’s not just at the pointy end of the midweek chart where Swift marks her territory. 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is one of seven Taylor LPs projected to impact the top 40, the Official Charts Company reports, including 2017’s reputation (at No. 9), 2022’s Midnights (No. 10), 2019’s Lover (No. 11), 2020’s folklore (No. 14) and evermore (No. 26), and the original, 2014 release of 1989 (No. 39).

Meanwhile, ABBA’s juggernaut, Gold: Greatest Hits, could rebound to No. 3, its highest chart position since 2008. The career retrospective has already logged a record 1,130 weeks – and counting – on the Official Chart.

Also on the rise is Noah Kahan’s Stick Season (Island), which is set to lift 8-6, for a new peak, as its title track has a shot at No. 1 on the national singles chart.

Also on the way up, based on midweek sales and streaming data published by the OCC, are collections from Fleetwood Mac (50 Years – Don’t Stop, up 13-7 via Rhino), Michael Jackson (The Essential up 26-18 via Epic), Post Malone’s (The Diamond Collection, up 27-19 via Republic Records) and Elvis Presley (ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits, up 48-35 via RCA).

Festive records should begin their annual pilgrimage down and out of the chart, including Michael Bublé’s Christmas (Reprise), the leader on the most recent tally, published Friday, Dec. 29.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Albums Chart is published this Friday, Jan. 5.

Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flowers’ Stands Tall on Year-End U.K. Singles Chart

Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” bloomed in a big way, as her pop hit ended 2023 as the U.K.’s biggest single.

The lead track from Cyrus’ chart-leading eight studio LP Endless Summer Vacation (Columbia), “Flowers” captured 198 million combined audio and video streams in the U.K., according to data published by the Official Charts Company — good enough for the most-streamed song and music video for the year.

Along the way, “Flowers” logged 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, raking in some 1.7 million U.K. chart units since its release in January 2023. Also, its 91,000 downloads led all tracks in 2023.

Coming in at No. 2 on the OCC’s tally of biggest tracks for 2023 is Dave and Central Cee’s “Sprinter” (via Live Yours/Neighbourhood), a different type of athlete that spent 10 consecutive weeks at No. 1 and collected 161 million audio and video streams in the territory. “Sprinter” ends 2023 with 1.2 million U.K. chart units. Following its release last June, “Sprinter” set a new record for the biggest streaming week for a rap single in U.K. (13.4 million streams and 108,200 chart units in its first tracking week). By the end of its run, another record for a rap track.

Completing the year-end singles podium is Raye and 070 Shake’s “Escapism” (Human Re Sources), with 1.2 million total U.K. chart units, a sum that includes 142 million audio and video streams.

Taylor Swift appears twice on the tally, with Midnights cut “Anti-Hero” (at No. 4 via EMI) and 2019 Lover album track “Cruel Summer,” which was finally issued as a single in 2023, for a No. 2 peak on the weekly chart and No. 11 appearance on the year-end list.

Christmas only comes once a year, though two festive classics make the year-end cut. Wham’s “Last Christmas” (Epic) which set a new record for endurance when it became the U.K.’s coveted Christmas No. 1 single for 2023, 39 years after release, comes in at No. 18 on the year-end list, which Mariah Carey‘s “All I Want for Christmas is You” (Columbia) is at No. 29.

Kid Cudi Slams Troll Who Said His 2021 ‘SNL’ Performance Was an ‘Illuminati Humiliation Ritual’

Kid Cudi has “got time” to shut down the haters.

The star took to X (formerly known as Twitter) on Tuesday (Jan. 2) to clap back at a user named Isaac, who claimed Cudi’s 2021 Saturday Night Live performance, in which he’s seen performing “Sad People” in a floral print dress, is “an illuminati humiliation ritual.”

“Dear Issac u silly stupid lil person and all people under this post. Its the start of a new year and I got time for muthaf—as like u today,” Cudi began his response. “This post is mad f—in lame of u and sad. He added, “This moment was a proud moment for me, a shinin moment for all people who express themselves in their art. I felt free and alive, it inspired people and nothing u stupid simple a–es say can take that away from me. Happy New Year u f—in simps.”

Cudi has said on many occasions that the floral print dress was in honor of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who wore similar dresses onstage in the 1990s. The rapper shared at the time of his performance that the dress was designed by the late Off-White founder and Louis Vuitton artistic director Virgil Abloh. “I told him I wanted to show love to Kurt w a floral print sundress and this man made a masterpiece,” the rapper wrote. “Thank You @virgilabloh ur a f—in genius!! Love you man we did it!!!”

During his second SNL performance of “Tequila Shots,” Cudi also rocked a fuzzy olive-green cardigan similar to the one Cobain famously wore during Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged in New York live performance, which aired months before his 1994 death. Underneath, Cudi sported a shirt with a headshot of late SNL great Chris Farley.

Gomez recalled that she got into singing after snagging the lead role on her Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place. “Disney is, it’s safe to say, a machine and, in a way, forcefully require that I know how to sing so I could sing the theme song [of a show]. They know how to package someone and make it a whole triple threat thing,” she said. After she recorded the theme song for Wizards, Disney asked if Gomez would like to record an album, which she “thought it would be fun.”

She added, “I wanted to be an actress, I never really intended on being a singer full-time but apparently that hobby turned into something else.”

Gomez’s acting career is skyrocketing even more lately, as her role in Hulu’s Only Murders has snagged her two Golden Globes nominations in 2023 and 2024 for best performance by an actress in a television series – musical or comedy.

John Michael Montgomery is saying goodbye to life on the road.

The “Life’s a Dance” hitmaker revealed via his official Facebook page on Monday (Jan. 1), that his 2024-2025 tour dates will serve as his farewell tour as he winds down his touring career.

“It’s been a wonderful run for me from the beginning over 30 years ago in 1992 when my first song ‘Life’s a Dance’ was released to radio I think either as a 45 vinyl or on a cassette tape, CDs had not quite taken over the market yet and the internet was still in its infancy,” Montgomery recalled in his Facebook post.

“It amazes me where it is today,” he added. “I’ve been fortunate and blessed to be able to do what I love for so many years so please join me on my journey as I say goodbye to the road life. And thanks so much for your support for the last 3 decades, it’s meant so much me.”

Montgomery’s post did not state a specific reason for his decision to wind down his touring. A representative for Montgomery did not respond to a request for comment. Currently, Montgomery has concerts slated for 2024 in January, March, April, May and October.

The Kentucky native made his breakthrough with the 1993 top 5 Hot Country Songs hit “Life’s a Dance,” and won the Country Music Association’s Horizon Award in 1994.

He would go on to add seven No. 1 Hot Country Songs hits to his resume, starting with the three-week No. 1 “I Love the Way You Love Me.” His romantic ballad, “I Swear,” became a four-week Hot Country Songs hit No. 1 in 1994 and crossed over onto the all-genre Hot 100, reaching No. 42. The song won a CMA Award for single of the year, and nabbed Montgomery a Grammy nomination for best male country vocal performance. R&B group All-4-One recorded a version of the song, taking it to No. 1 on the Hot 100.

Montgomery’s hits have also included “Be My Baby Tonight,” “The Little Girl,” “I Can Love You Like That,” and “Sold (The Grundy County Auction).” His highest-charting Hot 100 crossover song was the 2004 military-inspired hit “Letters From Home.”

Additionally, musical talent runs in the Montgomery family. As a child, Montgomery and his brother, Eddie Montgomery, played music together. Eddie would go on to also find massive country music success as half of the duo Montgomery Gentry. John Michael recently celebrated the next generation of familial country music success, watching as his son, Walker Montgomery, recently made his debut on the Grand Ole Opry.

Playboi Carti Reunites With Travis Scott for ‘BACKR00MS’ Collab

Playboi Carti is already taking over 2024 with new music. To kick off the new year Monday (Jan. 1), he dropped “BACKR00MS,” featuring Travis Scott, exclusively on YouTube.

The nearly three-minute visual is already No. 1 on Trending, with 4.4 million views in 17 hours at the time this article was published. It’s the second video the rapper has dropped on his YouTube channel, following “2024,” which has nearly 21 million views in two weeks and is No. 7 on Trending for music. “2024” is produced by Kanye West, Earl on the Beat and Ojivolta.

“BACKR00MS” arrives six months after Carti and Scott linked up on “FE!N” from the latter’s Grammy-nominated album Utopia. They performed it together during Scott’s Utopia – Circus Maximus Tour stop at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium. During his pit stop at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Scott explained why he performed “FE!N” 10 times during his Barclays Center show. “Man, I have the best fans in the world and I go off the energy they give me, and they were wild that night, and so I just got even wilder,” he said. “BACKR00MS” is Carti and Scott’s fourth collaboration, following “Green and Purple” (2017), “Love Hurts” (2018) and “FE!N” (2022).

Last month, Carti began surprise dropping songs exclusively as music videos either on the @opium_00pium account, including “Different Day” and “H00DBYAIR,” or on his YouTube channel. At press time, all four songs are currently unavailable on DSPs.

The songs seem to be a part of his upcoming third studio album, which is tentatively titled Music or I Am Music. It’s been three years since Carti dropped his last album, Whole Lotta Red, via AWGE and Interscope Records. Released on Christmas Day 2020, the 24-track project debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Shawn Mendes Reflects on 2023 Lessons & Welcoming the ‘Lows of Life’

Shawn Mendes has grown immensely throughout 2023.

The “In My Blood” singer took to Instagram on Tuesday (Jan. 2) to reflect on the past year, alongside a video of himself freely singing along to a harmonium. “Over the last year i spent a lot of time singing like this.. I found that in moments of extreme anxiety or fear if i sat down with my harmonium and allowed myself with full trust to sing whatever came out it would often ease the pain,” he wrote in the caption. “It felt so difficult at first to let myself sing without needing perfection but after a while i actually started to fall in love with the dance between the ‘right’ and the ‘wrong’ notes … i realized there were only moments of bliss and euphoria from the ‘right’ notes BECAUSE of the ‘wrong’ notes. The only reason i can sing in key is because i’ve learned to listen.”

He continued, “The biggest lesson for me this year has been to accept and welcome the lows of life… not to constantly need to change or fix something in order to feel high again, because i know if i really slow down and listen when i’m low there’s always something to hear.”

See his post here.

Mendes has been a longtime advocate for mental health, and has opened up many times over the years about his struggles with anxiety. In his 2020 Netflix documentary In Wonder, the singer was as vulnerable as ever. “It’s pretty intense all the time,” he says at one point in the film. “I really think about that a lot. If I tell the world that I’m just a normal human, are they going to stop coming to the shows and listening to the music and is all the craziness going to stop? Then you’re like, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t tell them. I should keep the trick up. Maybe I should pretend I’m Superman for a little bit longer.”

In July 2022, Mendes canceled his Wonder tour as he continued to work on healing his mental health. “After speaking more with my team and working with an incredible group of health professionals, it has become more cler that I need to take the time I’ve never taken personally, to ground myself and come back stronger,” he wrote in his statement.
