Clio Music is renowned for celebrating creativity in the use of music in commercials, as selected by a jury of industry professionals. But for this, we’re asking you to weigh in on what you think was the most creative and culturally impactful use of music in a 2023 commercial.

There’s a lot to choose from.

ONE OK ROCK’s “Make It Out Alive” was a monster success for Niantic; Lainey Wilson’s “Heart Like a Truck” revved up Ram; Charli XCX’s “Speed Drive” put Chevrolet into overdrive; OneRepublic’s “RUNAWAY” went the extra mile for Jeep; Portugal. The Man’s “Dummy” was a smart pick from Taco Bell; Lil Baby and Gunna’s “Drip Too Hard” freshened up AXE; BLACKPINK’s “Shut Down” brightened up Walmart; Bad Bunny’s “Where She Goes” helped Pepsi pop; Kelis’ “Milkshake” brought everyone to Uber One’s yard; Mötley Crüe’s “Live Wire” electrified Acura; Anitta’s “Envolver” chipped in for Lay’s; and Latto’s “Big Energy” made noise for Sonic.

But which was your favorite? Vote for what you think was the most creative use of music in a 2023 commercial below. Voting will close at noon ET on Jan. 28. The winner will be unveiled during the 2024 Clio Music Awards on Jan. 31 at the NeueHouse Hollywood in Los Angeles.

Travis Barker Makes Out With Kourtney Kardashian on Emmys Red Carpet: See the Photo

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker aren’t about to let photographers, video cameras and A-list party guests stop them from packing on the PDA. At this year’s Emmys Monday (Jan. 15) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, the couple did a bit of French kissing while walking the red carpet, their first since welcoming their 3-month-old son, Rocky Thirteen.

The pair matched in dark sunglasses and black suits, with the Lemme founder sporting leathery gloves. Kardashian and the Blink-182 drummer have earned a reputation for getting physical in public settings, so those in attendance probably weren’t all that surprised when the couple started touching tongues while posing for pictures at the event.

Later, Barker helped open the ceremony by performing Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” on the drums during host Anthony Anderson‘s opening monologue, which paid tribute to Miami Vice. “I’ve been waiting for this moment all my life….,” he tweeted afterward. “I just played the most famous drum fill of all time at The Emmy’s. I love you Phil Collins ?”

Barker and Kardashian have had a lot to celebrate recently. In November, the couple welcomed Rocky into their blended family after documenting their fertility journey on Hulu’s The Kardashians. The little boy is their first child together, with both stars having children from past relationships.

“Neta Que No” crowns the chart after a 17% surge in radio airplay audience impressions, to 7.3 million earned in the U.S. in the Jan. 5-11 tracking week, according to Luminate. The track takes home the chart’s Greatest Gainer trophy, awarded to the song with the largest gain in audience impressions among the chart’s 40 titles.

The track succeeds Julión Álvarez y Su Norteño Banda’s “Buscandole A La Suerte,” which drops to No. 2 after one week in charge.

“Neta Que No,” released Aug. 11 via Azteca/Fonovisa/UMLE, was written by Cesar Morquecho and Eduardo Anguiano, and produced by Humberto Novoa and Mauricio Palma.

The single earns Azteca its fifth No. 1 at the format, after “La Luna de Miel” (2022) and three leaders by La Maquinaria Norteña: “50 y Cincuenta” (2022), “Eres Ese Algo” (2023) and “Te Quiero Ver” (2023).

La Fiera De Ojinaga has charted 16 songs at the Regional Mexican Airplay format. Of those, seven have reached the top 10. Here’s a recap, listed chronologically:

Jack Harlow’s ‘Lovin on Me’ & Tate McRae’s ‘Greedy’ Continue Atop Global Charts

Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me” logs a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 chart, while Tate McRae’s “Greedy” tallies a third week atop the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. survey.

Plus, two songs are new to the Global 200’s top 10: Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control,” which leaps 22-9, and The Weeknd, Jennie and Lily-Rose Depp’s “One of the Girls” (15-10). On Global Excl. U.S., “One of the Girls” also reaches the top 10 (12-7), as does Feid and ATL Jacob’s “Luna” (23-10).

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by Luminate. The Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the United States.

Chart ranks are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the charts’ calculations.

‘Lovin on Me’ Leads Global 200 for Second Week

Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me” tops the Global 200 for a second week, with 52.7 million streams (up 1%) and 10,000 sold (down 6%) worldwide in the Jan. 5-11 tracking week. A week earlier, the song became the rapper’s second No. 1 on the chart, and his first on his own, after his and Jung Kook’s “3D” ruled in its debut week in October.

Tate McRae’s “Greedy” holds at No. 2 on the Global 200, after two weeks at No. 1 beginning in November; Xavi’s “La Diabla” lifts 4-3 for a new high; Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” slips 3-4, following a week on top in November; and Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season” becomes his first top five hit, jumping 8-5 with 34 million streams (up 16%) and 3,000 sold (up 11%) worldwide.

Teddy Swims scores his first Global 200 top 10, as “Lose Control” roars 22-9 with 28.3 million streams (up 22%) and 11,000 sold (up 23%) worldwide. The song concurrently becomes the Conyers, Ga., native’s first top 10 on the U.S.-based Billboard Hot 100.

The Weeknd, Jennie and Lily-Rose Depp’s “One of the Girls” also hits the Global 200’s top 10, rising 15-10, led by 40.6 million streams (up 11%) worldwide. The song was featured in the fourth episode of HBO’s The Idol and was released after the episode premiered June 23, 2023. Depp starred in the series as rising pop star Jocelyn; The Weeknd (credited under his real name, Abel Tesfaye) played nightclub owner and talent scout Tedros; and Jennie portrayed Dyanne, a backup dancer and friend of Jocelyn. The series aired five episodes on HBO and Max in June-July and, although the show was canceled in August after one season, the song has continued to surge thanks in part to popularity on TikTok.

The Weeknd adds his 11th Global 200 top 10; Jennie, her second; and Depp, her first. Notably, with Jennie as a member, BLACKPINK has posted four top 10s as a group, including the No. 1s “Pink Venom” and “Shut Down” in 2022. All four members of the South Korean group have hit the top 10 solo, totaling six top 10s: previously, Jennie reached No. 7 last October with “You & Me”; Lisa has also logged two solo top 10s, “Lalisa” and “Money,” which hit Nos. 2 and 10, respectively, in 2021; Rosé has earned one top 10, and the first solo leader among the four members, as “On the Ground” began at No. 1 in March 2021; and Jisoo has likewise landed one top 10, “Flower,” which reached No. 2 last April.

McRae Gets ‘Greedy’ Third Week Atop Global Excl. U.S.

Tate McRae’s “Greedy” rules the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart for a third week, with 39.1 million streams (up 1%) and 1,000 sold (down 9%) outside the U.S. Jan. 5-11. The track became McRae’s first leader on the list in early December.

Xavi’s “La Diabla” holds at its No. 2 Global Excl. U.S. high; Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me” ascends 5-3 for a new best; Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” slides to No. 4 from its No. 3 high; and Jung Kook’s “Seven,” featuring Latto, falls 4-5, after it ruled for nine weeks starting upon its debut last July.

The Weeknd, Jennie and Lily-Rose Depp’s “One of the Girls” bounds 12-7 on Global Excl. U.S., with 33.6 million streams (up 10%) outside the U.S. The Weeknd achieves his ninth top 10; Jennie, her second; and Depp, her first. With Jennie as a member, BLACKPINK has banked four top 10s as a group, including the No. 1s “Lovesick Girls” in 2020 and “Pink Venom” and “Shut Down.” All four members of BLACKPINK’s have hit the top 10 as soloists, totaling six top 10s: previously, Jennie launched at No. 1 last October with “You & Me”; Lisa has claimed two top 10s, “Lalisa” and “Money,” which hit Nos. 2 and 7, respectively; Rosé has scored one top 10, the No. 1 “On the Ground”; and Jisoo has also tallied one top 10, “Flower,” which reached No. 2.

Elsewhere, Feid and ATL Jacob’s “Luna” soars 23-10 on Global Excl. U.S., with 30 million streams (up 20%) outside the U.S. Feid, from Colombia, adds his third top 10 on the chart and Atlanta’s ATL Jacob posts his first.

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts (dated Jan. 20, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, Jan. 17 (a day later than usual due to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday Jan. 15). SXSW 2024: The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney Are Keynotes

The Black Keys are heading to South by Southwest 2024.

Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, founding members of the chart-topping blues-rock outfit, will take their positions on stage as keynote speakers, organizers announce today (Jan. 16).

Auerbach, the band’s singer and guitarist, and Carney, the Black Keys’ drummer, will lend their support to the new documentary, This is a Film About The Black Keys, which enjoys its world premiere at the SXSW Film & TV Festival. Directed by Jeff Dupre, the feature-length film is said to trace the band’s journey, which began nearly a quarter century ago as kids jamming in a basement in Akron, OH, and has seen the rockers complete the journey to the biggest stages on the planet.

Along the way, they’ve soaked up commercial and critical success, including six top 10 titles landed on the Billboard 200 chart, with a No. 1 for 2014’s Turn Blue, and six Grammy Awards.

“The impact of artists has made music the foundation of SXSW,” comments Hugh Forrest, chief programming officer and co-president. “For this reason, we’re especially excited to welcome Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, one of the most compelling rock bands around, to the Keynote Speaker lineup for a discussion on their prolific career.”

The rockers are among the big names in the fourth round of featured speakers, a list that includes legendary actress and activist Jane Fonda; three-time NBA champion and Basketball Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade; Twitch CEO Dan Clancy; and Lord of the Rings actor and co-founder of indie production company  SpectreVision, Elijah Wood.

Conference sessions include the panel, “The Transformation of Music Sync: When the Songwriter Becomes the Screenwriter,” and “Death of the Follower & the Future of Creativity on the Web.”

Additional keynote speakers and featured sessions will be unveiled in the coming weeks, reps say.

Founded in 1987 in Austin, TX, SXSW has grown to encompass tech, film and TV, music, education and culture. The entirety of the 2024 conference and festival will run from March 8-16.

In April 2021, it was announced that SXSW signed a “lifeline” deal with P-MRC, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and MRC, making P-MRC a stakeholder and long-term partner with the Austin festival. P-MRC is the parent company of Billboard.

One of Every 15 Vinyl Albums Sold in the U.S. in 2023 Was by Taylor Swift

In 2023, Taylor Swift loomed so large in the world of vinyl albums, that one of every 15 vinyl albums sold in the U.S. was by the superstar.

Comparatively, in 2022, she accounted for one of every 25 vinyl albums sold.

Swift was the year’s top-selling act on vinyl for a third straight year, with 3.484 million copies sold across her catalog of albums, according to data tracking firm Luminate. The industry’s total vinyl album sales for 2023, across all artists in the U.S., finished at 49.61 million – up 14.2% from 43.46 million in 2022. 2023 marked the 18th consecutive year vinyl album sales grew in the U.S., and the largest year for vinyl album sales since Luminate began tracking data in 1991.

In 2023, Swift’s vinyl sales accounted for 7% of the industry’s total vinyl album sales.

Read more about the year-end numbers in the U.S. 2023 Luminate Year-End Music Report.

Swift’s vinyl sales were so big in 2023 that she sold more than the next seven-biggest-selling acts on vinyl last year. Lana Del Rey was the year’s No. 2-seller on vinyl, with 646,000 copies sold, followed by Tyler, the Creator (552,000), Travis Scott (474,000), Olivia Rodrigo (408,000), Kendrick Lamar (382,000), Metallica (378,000) and The Beatles (373,000). (To round out the top 10-selling acts on vinyl last year, Fleetwood Mac was No. 9, with 357,000, and Mac Miller was No. 10 with 354,000.)

The top-selling vinyl album of 2023 was Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) with 1.014 million sold. That marks the largest yearly sales total for a vinyl album, and the first vinyl set to sell a million in a calendar year, since Luminate began tracking sales in 1991. The set also scored the largest sales week for a vinyl set since 1991 when it debuted with 693,000 copies sold in its first week.

Swift has five of the top 10-selling vinyl albums of 2023, and the entire top three. (See list, below.)

TOP 10-SELLING VINYL ALBUMS OF 2023 IN U.S.
1. Taylor Swift, 1989 (Taylor’s Version) (1.014 million)
2. Taylor Swift, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) (510,000)
3. Taylor Swift, Midnights (492,000)
4. Travis Scott, Utopia (373,000)
5. Taylor Swift, Folklore (308,000)
6. Olivia Rodrigo, Guts (267,000)
7. Taylor Swift, Lover (256,000)
8. Lana Del Rey, Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd (215,000)
9. Fleetwood Mac, Rumours (206,000)
10. Lana Del Rey, Born To Die (192,000)
Source: Luminate, for the tracking period Dec. 30, 2022, through Dec. 28, 2023.

Vinyl album sales comprised 47.1% of all album sales in the U.S. in 2023 (49.61 million of 105.32 million). Vinyl LPs accounted for 57% of all physical album sold last year (49.61 million of 87 million). Both sums are Luminate-era records for vinyl’s share of the album sales market in the U.S.

For the third consecutive year, and the third year since Luminate began tracking sales in 1991, vinyl albums outsold CD albums in the U.S. Vinyl once again is the leading configuration for album purchases for the third year in a row. (Vinyl was the top-selling album configuration in 2023, followed by CDs and then digital download albums.)

Vinyl was the dominant configuration for album purchases in the U.S. up until the early 1980s. After that, cassettes took hold until the early ‘90s, when the CD configuration blossomed and remained king until 2021, when vinyl retook the top slot.

Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991 when the company was known as SoundScan. Luminate’s sales, streaming and airplay data is used to compile Billboard’s weekly charts. Selena Gomez Brings Boyfriend Benny Blanco as Her Date to the Emmys

Benny Blanco is proving to be a reliable partner for Selena Gomez during this year’s awards season, most recently accompanying the singer-actress at the 2024 Primetime Emmys Sunday night (Jan. 16).

The couple remained at each other’s sides for much of the event, as documented in many photos and videos from the evening. Blanco didn’t join the Rare Beauty founder for photos on the red carpet, where she showed off her stunning Oscar de la Renta dress adorned with more than 450,000 pailletes. He did, however, blow her a kiss before splitting up before the line of cameras, the two later reuniting to take their seats for the ceremony.

In one clip, the pair scoots in with Gomez’s Only Murders in the Building costars Martin Short and Steve Martin in one of the front rows at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater.

Only Murders was in the running for best comedy series at this year’s Emmys, although the award ended up going to FX’s hit project The Bear. Short was also nominated for best actor in a comedy series thanks to his performance in the trio’s murder-mystery sitcom, but Jeremy Allen White took the prize.

The Emmys aren’t Gomez and Blanco’s first awards-show outing as a couple this season. A week prior, they were both in attendance at the Golden Globes. While the pair didn’t appear to sit next to each other during the main ceremony, the “Calm Down” singer did later post a sweet photo of her beau kissing her neck behind the scenes.

Gomez and the pop-music maestro first made their relationship public in December, with the former Disney Channel star confirming at the time that they’d been an item for about six months by then. After describing Blanco as “my absolute everything in my heart” in a series of comments on Instagram, Gomez went on to share photos with him and showed off her letter “B” ring on Instagram Stories.

Since then, the couple has celebrated New Year’s together and attended a Los Angeles Lakers game, where they cuddled up courtside.

Announced in November, It’s All A Blur Tour — Big as the What? included 22 dates and came on the heels of Drake and Cole’s Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 collaboration “First Person Shooter.” Fans got a taste of the tour when Cole and Drake headlined the Carolina rapper’s Dreamville Festival last year. The set included a barrage of hits and special guests, including Lil Wayne, GloRilla and Lil Uzi Vert.

Last year, Drake notched his 13th Billboard 200 No. 1 album with For All the Dogs. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the OVO commander earned 402,000 equivalent albums, courtesy of his Hot 100 chart-topper “Slime You Out” featuring SZA. The album had a bevy of guests ranging from Yeat to Lil Yachty and Sexyy Red.

Shortly after the release of FATD, Drake upped the ante with his For All the Dogs Scary Hours Edition. The six-song entry found a more punchy Drake, who also reeled in J. Cole for another feature on “Evil Ways.” The mini set also featured “You Broke My Heart,” which recently received the visual treatment and featured a cameo from Morgan Wallen. Subsequently, he added 10 more dates to the It’s All a Blur Tour — Big As the What? following the release of the deluxe effort.
