The Glorious Sons, TALK & More to Perform During NHL All-Star Weekend Skills Competition

The National Hockey League revealed on Thursday (Jan. 18) that rock band The Glorious Sons and multi-instrumentalist TALK will be headlining this year’s NHL All-Star Skills presented by DraftKings Sportsbook.

The event, which will take over Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada, on Feb. 2 during the 2024 All-Star weekend, will also feature Dinah Jane and Chxrry22 performing the U.S. and Canadian national anthems, respectively. The Glorious Sons and TALK performances will be televised as part of the broadcasts on Sportsnet and TVA Sports in Canada and on ESPN and ESPN+ in the United States.

The weekend will kick off with NHL All-Star Thursday on Feb. 1, before NHL All-Star Skills presented by DraftKings Sportsbook will take place on Friday, Feb. 2, and the Honda (U.S.) / Rogers (Canada) NHL All-Star Game wraps up the weekend on Saturday, Feb. 3. 

This year’s NHL All-Star Skills will introduce a revamped format with 12 NHL All-Stars competing for points in eight events, with the all-star who accumulates the most points taking home a prize of $1 million. Additional news around NHL All-Star Weekend will be announced in the coming weeks.

Alanis Morissette, Corinne Bailey Rae & More to Be Honored at Inaugural Resonator Awards: Full List

Alanis Morissette, Corinne Bailey Rae, Caroline Polachek, Catherine Marks, Laura Sisk and Jennifer Decilveo will be honored at the inaugural Resonator Awards on Jan. 30 at Beauty & Essex in Hollywood. The invite-only event is presented by We Are Moving the Needle, a non-profit organization that is working to advance gender equity for producers and engineers.

Resonator Impact Awards will also be presented to music executives Michael Goldstone of Mom+Pop Music and Christine Thomas of Dolby Labs for their commitment to advancing gender equity across the music industry. SiriusXM on-air personality and music journalist Jenny Eliscu will host the Resonator Awards, which are empowered by EqualizeHer.

The awards dinner will also recognize the first inductees to the Resonator Hall of Fame, which honors legendary producers and engineers who “paved the way.” Six of the honorees have won a combined total of 34 Grammys – Alicia Keys, Leslie Ann Jones, Darcy Proper, Trina Shoemaker, Ann Mincieli and Claudia Brant.

Other Hall of Fame inductees include Linda Perry, the most recent woman to receive a Grammy nomination for producer of the year, non-classical (five years ago) and Sylvia Robinson, the late singer, record producer and label executive who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (in the non-performer category) in 2022.

More Hall of Fame inductees are Marcella Araica, Lenise Bent, Lynne Earls, Angela Piva, Susan Rogers, Trina Shoemaker, Pat Sullivan and Terri Winston.

“This inaugural Resonator Awards invites the music community to come together and connect in a profound commitment to advancing gender inclusivity in the studio,” said Emily Lazar, a Grammy-winning mastering engineer and founder of We Are Moving the Needle. “This is more than a celebration, this is an historic moment where we will shine a light on a set of phenomenal creators—not because they are women, but because they are powerful producers, engineers, and artists whose work from behind the console has inspired us all. Actions speak louder than words, and this moment not only increases visibility, access, and representation, it inspires the next generation of talent to break barriers and reinvent the future of the industry.”

Lazar made history in 2019 as the first female mastering engineer to win the Grammy for best engineered album, non-classical for Beck’s Colors. She founded We Are Moving the Needle in 2021 to help close the gender gap in the recording studio.

Since it was established, We Are Moving the Needle has awarded more than $425,000 in scholarships to women and non-binary talent to attend audio education programs globally. Taylor Swift Leads 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards Nods, With Jelly Roll, 21 Savage & SZA Close Behind: Full List

Taylor Swift is the leading nominee for the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards, which are set to air live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 1 on Fox. Swift received nine nods. Jelly Roll, 21 Savage and SZA are close behind with eight nods. Olivia Rodrigo received seven.

The nominations show the degree to which women dominated pop radio in 2023. All five nominees for pop artist of the year are women: Doja Cat, Miley Cyrus, Rodrigo, SZA and Swift.

By contrast, all five nominees for hip-hop artist of the year are men: 21 Savage, Drake, Future, Gunna and Lil Durk.

Three artists showed their versatility by being nominated as artist of the year in two genres. Jelly Roll is nominated for both country artist of the year and rock artist of the year; SZA for both pop and R&B artist of the year; and Foo Fighters for both rock and alternative artist of the year.

Jack Antonoff is the only creative who is nominated for both producer of the year and songwriter of the year.

This year’s show will include five new categories focused on pop and K-pop: pop artist of the year, pop song of the year, K-pop artist of the year, K-pop song of the year and best new artist (K-pop).

Fan voting will determine this year’s best lyrics, best music video, best fan army, social star award, favorite tour photographer, TikTok bop of the year, favorite on screen, favorite tour style and favorite debut album.

Social voting begins Thursday (Jan. 18) and will close March 25 at 11:59 p.m. PT. Fans can vote by visiting iHeartRadio.com/awards.

The 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards will air live on Monday, April 1, from 8-10 p.m. ET live/PT tape-delayed on Fox. The event will also be heard on iHeartRadio stations nationwide and on the iHeartRadio app.

The 12th annual iHeartRadio Music Awards will celebrate the most-played artists and songs on iHeartRadio stations and the iHeartRadio app throughout 2023, while also offering a preview of upcoming hits of 2024.

“The iHeartRadio Music Awards is a night where we celebrate the biggest artists and songs fans loved listening to on the radio all year long,” John Sykes, president of Entertainment Enterprises for iHeartMedia, said in a statement. “We’ll also share stories from the artists themselves about their hard-fought journeys to the top of the charts.”

Ray Charles Foundation Donates $2 Million to the Grammy Museum

The Ray Charles Foundation has donated $2 million to the Grammy Museum Foundation to fund the museum’s Campaign for Music Education.

The Campaign, launched in October 2022, will expand access to the museum’s educational programs, including the Grammy in the Schools programming. Its co-chairs include Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Bruno Mars, Shawn Mendes, and Rosalía. 

“As the Grammy Museum celebrates our 15th Anniversary, more than ever we are leaning into expanding music education and access to our renowned programs,” said Michael Sticka, president/CEO of the Grammy Museum in a statement. “We are incredibly grateful to our partners, The Ray Charles Foundation, for their generosity and investment towards the Museum’s Campaign for Music Education, which will help us further our educational mission. It’s an honor to deepen that longstanding partnership.”

“The Grammy  Museum embodies the spirit of our mission to empower young people through education,” added Valerie Ervin, president of The Ray Charles Foundation. “We are thrilled to be able to continue our partnership with the Museum and help them achieve their goal of expanding music education and fostering a love of music in our next generation.”  

The Ray Charles Foundation provides funding in the area of hearing disorders and in empowering young people through educational institutions and non-profit education programs. 

In honor of the donation, the Grammy Museum is renaming its rooftop terrace The Ray Charles Terrace at the Grammy Museum. The renaming will take place as an official Grammy week event on Jan. 29 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by Jimmy Jam, with music curation by DJ Khalil and a performance by Aloe Blacc. The terrace, which offers views of downtown LA and the Hollywood sign and hosts more than 150 events each year.

Post Malone, Reba McEntire and Andra Day to Headline Super Bowl LVIII Pregame

The NFL unveiled the lineup for the pregame entertainment for Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas on Thursday morning (Jan. 18). Before Usher takes the stage for the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime show, country icon Reba McEntire will sing the National Anthem, while Post Malone will tackle “America the Beautiful” and Andra Day will sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

The National Anthem and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” will be produced and arranged by Emmy-winning musical director/producer Adam Blackstone. Both the pregame and halftime shows will feature American Sign Language performances, with Coda actress Daniel Durant performing the National Anthem in ASL, actress/model/singer Anjel Piñero signing “America the Beautiful” and actor/choreographer Shaheem Sanchez signing “Lift Every Voice and Sing”; Sanchez will also perform the ASL rendition of the halftime show.

In a new interview with Vogue, Usher said he has been in intense rehearsals for his Apple Music halftime show, saying the 13-minute trip through his career “has to be perfect.” The “Yeah!” singer explained, “I’ve been doing this for 30 years. I want people who have been a part of that journey to feel like it’s a celebration for everybody, for all of us, from the beginning up until this point.”

The tightly-held specifics of the show have not yet been revealed, but Usher did promise that he would show off some of his signature dance moves and roller skating skills and that there would be a costume change and special guests.

“I’m literally speaking to every woman. I want to make it feel like that,” the singer said of his goal to make provide an intimate, steamy show in the 65,000-capacity stadium. “I want the world to smile when they look at me. I want them to feel something, and feel my passion, my love, feel like I was the right person to sit in this position, and I was the right person to bring this kind of energy and love and connection to the entire world.”

Super Bowl LVIII will take place on Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Natasha Bedingfield’s ‘Unwritten’ on Track For U.K. Top 20, Thanks to ‘Anyone But You’

Natasha Bedingfield is writing another chapter to her U.K. chart story, thanks to a sync in Will Gluck’s rom-com Anyone But You.

The British pop singer and songwriter’s “Unwritten” (via Phonogenic) could return to the U.K. top 20 for the first time in 19 years.

Based on a late chart blast published by the Official Charts Company, “Unwritten” is predicted to climb 24-20, for its first appearance in the top 20.

“Unwritten” peaked at No. 6 following its release back in 2004, and is one of Bedingfield’s five U.K. top 10 hits, a tally that includes a No. 1 with “These Words” (both appeared on her debut album from that year, Unwritten).

In the Shakespeare-inspired Anyone But You, “Unwritten” plays a pivotal role in the narrative of Glen Powell’s character, and is played and sung by multiple characters throughout the film.

It’s not the only British pop single from the early noughts enjoying a resurgence, powered by a feature film.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor‘s “Murder on the Dancefloor” (Polydor) lifted to No. 2 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart last week, following its memorable spot late in Emerald Fennell’s dark-as-coal movie Saltburn — equaling its peak set back in 2001.

The Saltburn bump is real, and it’s happening around the globe. In the United States, “Murder on the Dancefloor” belatedly entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 98, and now rises to No. 58 in its second week. And in Australia, “Murder on the Dancefloor” reenters the ARIA Chart at No. 25.

As previously reported, Noah Kahan‘s “Stick Season” (Republic Records) is on track for a third successive week at No. 1 on the U.K. chart, while Ariana Grande’s “Yes, And?” (Republic Records) should be the week’s top debut, bowing at No. 2 on the midweek tally. “Murder on the Dancefloor” is forecast to complete the U.K. podium, at No. 3.

The next Official U.K. Singles Chart is published late Friday, Jan. 19.

Green Day Will Play ‘Dookie’ And ‘American Idiot’ Each Night on ‘The Saviors Tour’

Green Day will welcome fans to paradise on their forthcoming The Saviors Tour, by playing Dookie and American Idiot in full each night.

Just days out from the release of Saviors, the pop-punk veterans confirm they’ll perform the classic albums on each and every date of the stadium tour, along with “a bunch of your other favorites, new and old, all summer long.”

Hints have been flying left and right, though Rock Hall inductees announced details for the first time this week.

Timing is everything. Dookie this year celebrates its 30th anniversary with the release of a deluxe edition and a surprise club show in Las Vegas last October, where the trio performed the 1994 LP in full, from “Burnout” to “F.O.D.,” and, of course, the hidden track “All By Myself”.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told the crowd at Fremont Country Club that 2024 would be a massive year for the band and its fans. “We are doing a big tour next year,” explained on the night. “It is going to be Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid and Linda Lindas.”

American Idiot is enjoying its own milestone, its 20th anniversary. The band threw a lyrical grenade during their set Dec. 31 on ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest, when they tweaked the politically charged lyrics to the title track, for a swipe at Donald Trump and the MAGA movement.

Released in 2004, American Idiot was the first of the band’s three No. 1 albums, logging three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and, for a time, allowing Armstrong, Tré Cool and Mike Dirnt to authoritatively boast at being the world’s biggest rock band.

The North America leg is slated to start July 29 at Nationals Park, Washington, DC. Before that, a tour of the U.K. and Europe is locked-in with Nothing but Thieves, the Hives, Donots, the Interrupters, and Maid of Ace, kicking off May 30 at O Son Do Camiño in Monto Do Gozo, Spain.

Produced by Live Nation, this will be the band’s first major tour since the 120-date 2016–17 Revolution Radio tour and the 29-date, 2021–22 Hella Mega Tour alongside Weezer and Fall Out Boy.

The trek is announced ahead of the release of Saviors this Friday, Jan. 19. The band’s 14th studio album, Saviors is the followup to 2020’s Father of All Motherf—ers, which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Breaking Down All the Comebacks & Reunions Booked for Coachella 2024 

Coachella has always flexed its muscle as one of the world’s most influential music festivals by booking big-name reunions and comeback shows that fans can’t see anywhere else. The desert fest hosted the reunion of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg (and the now-fabled 2Pac hologram) in 2012 and the return of Outkast in 2014. Prince melted faces off in 2008 when he was a last-minute add to the lineup, which also included Roger Waters and Kraftwerk.  

Around 2017, promoter Goldenvoice began moving away from these kinds of mega-watt reunions and glitzy legacy acts — a long-established part of the Coachella brand — in favor for global pop stars with bookings like Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Ariana Grande and Harry Styles. An attempt at a classic Coachella reunion had a false start with the attempted Rage Against the Machine headlining set in 2020 canceled (along with the rest of the festival) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Other legacy artists, meanwhile, were re-allocated to 2016’s Desert Trip and 2023’s Power Trip, which Goldenvoice also hosted at the Empire Polo Club and targeted older demographics with artists including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, Metallica and Tool — any of whom in previous years could have been Coachella headliners.

But Coachella has never completely abandoned this booking strategy, and the 2024 lineup suggests a renewed interest to lean that way.  

This lineup, announced Wednesday, features a healthy dose of ‘90s alt-rock alums with No Doubt, Sublime and Deftones, who this year feel newly minted as legacy acts with the prestige brought by a splashy Coachella appearance. (Even if in some cases, they have been consistently touring and/or recording for decades.)

As Coachella ages — now with 25 years of experience under its belt — so too has nostalgia for newer eras of music ready to be mined for bookings. This year’s embrace of ‘90s/Y2K artists had a successful test case in 2023, when Coachella added a reunited classic-lineup Blink-182 to the bill the day before the festival began. The success of that booking — the trio, which hadn’t played together since 2015 and which packed the massive Sahara Tent and then became the weekend two Sunday night headliners after Frank Ocean dropped out — demonstrated an appetitive for millennial nostalgia among attendees.

As Goldenvoice has done deftly in years past, with this through line Coachella has delivered on a demand that only recently taken form. The recent re-mainstreaming of alt-rock and guitar music in general through crossover artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Machine Gun Kelly likely played a part. And with generally fewer proven modern acts of their size to assemble lineups from, the allure of recognizable past hitmakers is greater than it has been in a long time.

Justin Timberlake Posts Cryptic ‘EITIW’ Teaser: What Does It All Mean?

Justin Timberlake had fans buzzing on Wednesday (Jan. 17) when he posted what appears to be a taste of an upcoming musical era.

“EITIW,” he captioned a series of photos on Instagram from what looks like a music video set, with fans theorizing that the single will be called “Everything I Thought It Was.” Redditors even tracked down a trademark application filed by a mysterious LLC early last year for that phrase, as well as for “Everything I Thought It Was…A Sonic Film.”

A poster featured in the Instagram carousel says “MISSING” at the top and “HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MAN?” The tongue-in-cheek details include: “Age: Infinity; Height: Feels like 10′ tall; Weight: Up; Eyes: Precision; Hair: Depends.”

On Jan. 8, fans noticed that all the posts on the “SexyBack” singer’s Instagram account were wiped clean. The only thing that remained was a profile photo of Timberlake, which featured his eyes sending a piercing look to a car’s rearview mirror.

Should Timberlake release a new album, it would mark his sixth album and first since 2018’s Man of the Woods. That project marked his fourth consecutive No. 1 on the Billboard 200, where it charted for a total of 19 weeks. Just days after the album’s Feb. 2 release, he performed at the Super Bowl LII halftime show in Minneapolis.

In September, Timberlake reunited with *NSYNC to release “Better Place” for the Trolls Band Together soundtrack, marking the group’s first musical release since 2002 (when the Neptunes remix of “Girlfriend,” featuring Nelly, arrived).
