Saint Levant & Gazan Rapper MC Abdul Celebrate the Culture of Palestine in ‘Deira’ Video

The culture of Palestine is celebrated in “Deira,” a new song and video from artists Saint Levant and MC Abdul released in the wake of Levant’s recent signing to Universal Arabic Music (UAM).

Levant is a singer, rapper and songwriter of Palestinian, Algerian, French and Serbian descent. MC Abdul is a 15-year-old rapper from Gaza whose 2021 viral hit, “Palestine,” brought him global prominence.

Done in the traditional Shaabi Arab musical style native to Algiers, “Deira” — which translates to “the Kasbah or “the old city” — is an homage to Levant’s lineage, with the video highlighting daily life, food, fashion, sports and more in the Middle East through a dreamy and nostalgic lens.

“Deira is the name of the hotel that my father Rashid, an architect, built with my mother in 2000 when they moved to Gaza,” Levant says in a statement. “He built this hotel with mud because it was impossible to import cement at the time. Located on the beach, this hotel was one of the most beautiful in Gaza, made up of 22 rooms. It was a true architectural marvel. On July 16, 2014, four children playing ball out front of the hotel were killed by Israeli rocket fire and most recently the hotel was totally destroyed by bombing three months ago.”

MC Abdul — who left Gaza for the United States a month before the war started — delivers a verse acknowledging the current conflict with the lyrics, “Big dreams, heavy nights/praying that my family can stay alive/imagine trying to fly with no wings/but I promise you the caged bird sings.”

Levant’s catalog includes a host of singles and two EPs, including 2023’s From Gaza, With Love. Based in Los Angeles, the artist recently signed to Universal Arabic Music (UAM) via a partnership with Republic Records and UMG launched by The Weeknd’s manager Wassim “Sal” Slaiby in 2021.

The Middle East has recently become a growth area for the music industry, with major labels like Universal setting up imprints and local offices there. Spotify launched in the Arab world in 2018, while Abu Dhabi-based streaming company Anghami received a $5 million investment from the venture capital arm of the Saudi Arabia media company SRMG last August. (SRMG is also behind the recently launched Billboard Arabia.) San Francisco-based distribution company EMPIRE has an operation covering the Middle East/North Africa, bringing on Spotify’s Suhel Nafar to oversee it in 2021.

The 2022 IFPI report notes that the Middle East and North African (MENA) region posted the world’s third-highest growth rate in 2022, seeing revenues from recorded music climb by 23.8%. Streaming accounted for the majority of the market, with those revenues making up a 95.5% share.

But the war in Gaza has disrupted that opportunity for many Palestinian acts, and increased attention around the conflict has not brought any significant streaming gains to Palestinian artists. MC Abdul’s global streaming numbers did, however, see a spike last fall in the weeks following the start of the war.

Travis Kelce Says He’d Marry Katy Perry, Kiss Taylor Swift in Resurfaced Clip

Travis Kelce had Taylor Swift on his mind even back in 2016!

In an old Afterbuzz TV interview clip that resurfaced this week on TMZ, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end is seen playing a game of “Marry, Kiss, Kill,” choosing between Swift, Katy Perry and Ariana Grande. As the title suggests, in the game, the player has to choose one of the options to marry, kill or kiss.

Kelce reluctantly chose to kill Grande, before ultimately deciding to kiss Swift and marry Perry. Little did he know that in seven years, he’d be dating the “Blank Space” superstar.

Funny enough, both Kelce and Perry were at Swift’s Eras tour stop in Sydney, Australia, on Friday night (Feb. 23). In fan-captured videos, the “Dark Horse” singer is spotted singing along and dancing at Accor Stadium to “Bad Blood,” which is widely believed to be about the two women’s since-squashed feud.

Kelce, meanwhile, watched from a VIP tent as his superstar girlfriend commanded the stage. Fan videos captured him exchanging friendship bracelets, interacting with the crowd and dancing along to Swift’s three-hour show. Toward the end of her performance, Kelce got a special shout-out from the 14-time Grammy winner. While singing “Karma,” Swift once again changed a lyric to say, “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs,” something she first did when the athlete attended her Buenos Aires show in November.

Dua Lipa’s ‘Houdini’ Makes Magical Move to No. 1 on Dance/Mix Show Airplay Chart

Dua Lipa’s “Houdini” hits No. 1 on Billboard’s Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart, escaping the No. 2 spot to appear atop the ranking dated March 2.

Lipa earns her fifth leader on Dance/Mix Show Airplay (which ranks titles by weekly plays on a panel of core 24/7 dance stations augmented with mix show hours on pop stations, as monitored by Mediabase and provided to Billboard by Luminate).

Here’s a rundown of Lipa’s Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart No. 1s:

Trending on Billboard

  • “Houdini,” for one week (to date), March 2, 2024
  • “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix),” with Elton John, 14 weeks, beginning Oct. 30, 2021
  • “Don’t Start Now,” 16 weeks, beginning Dec. 28, 2019
  • “One Kiss,” with Calvin Harris, 10 weeks, beginning June 2, 2018
  • “New Rules,” four weeks, beginning Feb. 3, 2018

“Houdini,” whose title is an ode to legendary illusionist Harry Houdini, became Lipa’s second No. 1 on Billboard’s multimetric Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. The single, on Warner Records, launched atop the list in November and added its 10th week at the summit on the most recently published, Feb. 24-dated tally.

Following his death in 1926, Houdini has been the subject of other chart hits. Walter Brennan spent a week at No. 100 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962 with “Houdini”; Kon Kan hit No. 33 on Dance Singles Sales in 1989 with “Harry Houdini”; and Foster the People’s “Houdini” reached No. 37 on Alternative Airplay in 2012.

Meanwhile, researching Billboard’s archives pulls this rabbit out of a hat: Houdini’s widow, Bess, drew ink in the Dec. 29, 1934, issue, which celebrated Billboard’s 40th anniversary (dating to the Nov. 1, 1894-dated inaugural edition). “The Billboard and I started in show business the same year,” an ad on page 219 read. “My! My! How you have grown, Billyboy. Congratulations – Mrs. Harry Houdini.”

French Montana Releases ‘Mac & Cheese 5’ Mixtape Feat. Kanye West, Lil Wayne & More: Stream It Now

It’s been an arduous-yet-fruitful journey for French Montana navigating the turbulent music industry since 2009’s Mac Wit Da Cheese.

Fifteen years later, The Bronx-bred rapper has returned to serve up the fifth installment of his famed mixtape series as Mac & Cheese 5 hit streaming services on Friday (Feb. 23).

French brought along an all-star cast of talented artists to join him in executing his vision for the 21-track project.

Guests making appearances include Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Lil Durk, Lil Baby, Meek Mill, JID, Westside Gunn, 41, Jeremih, Bryson Tiller and more.

The Moroccan rapper detailed his inspiration behind Mac & Cheese 5 and how he wants to see more artists attack mixtape series rather than just recording albums.

“I feel like I needed to get everything out the way then go back to the mixtape vibes. I always try to go where the puck is going, not where the puck is at. I feel like the game needs mixtapes,” he told The Breakfast Club on Friday.

“That feeling isn’t there anymore. Albums is dope everybody’s getting used to it, but I want to hear [Lil] Wayne mixtapes, Rick Ross Rich Forever mixtapes, Wiz Khalifa [Kush & Orange Juice] mixtapes. I just want to get back to that vibe and I want to lead the way with the mixtapes.”

Prior to unleashing Mac & Cheese 5, the “Unforgettable” rapper got back to his roots for a Coke Boys meets Gangsta Grillz project with DJ Drama. Coke Boys 6 arrived in Jan. 2023 and featured assists from A$AP Rocky, Rob49 and Benny The Butcher among others.

Here’s How Amy Schumer Ended Up Getting a Lap Dance Onstage With Madonna: ‘I Thought It Was a Joke!’

Have you even really lived until you’ve gotten a lap dance from Madonna? Just ask Amy Schumer.

In a new interview with The Associated Press, the comedian hilariously recounts getting onstage with the Queen of Pop during her ongoing Celebration Tour.

“I did not know I was going up on stage, that is the truth,” she told the interviewer and Life & Beth co-star Michael Cera. “An hour before the show, I was backstage hanging with some of her team and a choreographer approached me and… I thought it was a joke! And then I realized, ‘Oh, I’m getting onstage with her and I’m getting a lap dance.’”

Lap dances — and similar sensual choreography — are a key element of Madonna’s latest tour, as are onstage celebrity appearances. Before Schumer, the Queen of Pop trotted out stars such as Diplo, Donatella Versace and FKA twigs during the ballroom segment of the show. Madonna invited Schumer onstage during her show at Madison Square Garden in New York on Jan. 23. The two stars judged Madge’s backup dancers as they strutted to “Vogue”; eventually, the strutting turned into grinding as Madonna wrapped her legs around one dancer while Schumer’s face was temporarily frozen in shock.

Trending on Billboard

Amused and intrigued by Schumer’s story, Cera quipped, “You needed a choreographer for that?” In response, Schumer replied, “They just want to make sure that, first of all, there’s consent. And also that you’re not gonna, like, freak out because you’re onstage at The Garden, you know?”

Of course, this isn’t Madonna’s time in lap-dance territory — who can forget her sultry shimmy for Maluma back in 2022? — but Amy Schumer can now join her in that arena. “Two times, not a big deal!” she teased. “But it was amazing, and God I just love her so much. Everybody needs to see this show.”

The Celebration Tour — which has hit a steady pace after a particularly rocky start that saw the production postponed due to the “Hung Up” singer’s hospitalization — is set to continue through the next two months, stopping in major cities such as Las Vegas (March 1-2), Los Angeles (March 4-11) and Houston (March 28-29) before concluding with five shows at Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City (April 20-26).

Gen and the Degenerates Dance in the Face of Dystopia on Debut Album ‘Anti-Fun Propaganda’

Genevieve Glynn-Reeves, the 22-year-old British singer and lead for Gen and the Degenerates, is not looking for sympathy from older generations. Just cutting back on the constant invective and contrived concerns will more than suffice.

“There’s so much criticism of like Gen Z and millennials from older generations about how we’re spending our time and the kind of things we value,” says Glynn-Reeves, who with her four bandmates — guitarists Sean Sloan and Jake Jones, bass player Jay Humphreys and drummer Evan Reeves — turn the tables on the naysayers on their debut album Anti-Fun Propaganda, out Friday (Feb. 23) on Marshall Records.

Through tracks like “Kids Wanna Dance” and “That’s Enough Internet for Today,” Gen and the Degenerates dissect the youth experience under the Internet bubble, where every momentary mistake and mishap is fed into an algorithm and archived in the cloud somewhere.

Trending on Billboard

That’s disconcerting for Glynn-Reeves, who notes her dislike for permeance: “I don’t even write the lyrics for my songs down. If they aren’t good enough to be remembered, they probably should be forgotten.”

A native of Cambridge, Glynn-Reeves met her bandmates at Liverpool John Moore’s University in 2019 and has been honing the band’s sound ever since, landing on a punky ’80s UK-meets-Manhattan’s Lower East Side style with fast-paced lyrical delivery and dancy themes reminiscent of Blondie, The Eurythmics and Duran Duran.

As part of the album release, the band is featuring their newest single “Girls,” a cheeky anthem skewering the TikTok talking heads who criticize “girly behavior.”

“I asked women on TikTok and femme-presenting people for weird misogynistic complaints that their ex-boyfriends have had about them,” Glynn-Reeves says. “It turned out to be all these stupid things like, ‘Oh my ex would complain when I wore heels that made me taller than him,’ so I made the lyric ‘I love it when their shoes make them taller than me.’ Because it’s so ridiculous for men who claim to want to date women to then just have all of these stipulations and criticisms about women.”

“And they say this while having no standards for themselves,” Jones added.

“We should celebrate those things and put them in a positive light and see them as desirable,” Glynn-Reeve added. “As a queer person, I would love to date a woman like that; that sounds brilliant.”

Anti-Fun Propaganda is available in Spatial Audio via supported streaming platforms. The album can be found on Spotify here. Fans can purchase limited-edition vinyl bundles of the album here. The band is currently on the road with legendary Celtic punks Flogging Molly across the U.S. The complete list of dates can be found below.

Watch ‘The Voice’ Coaches Feel the ‘Love’ With Soulful Group Cover to Kick Off Season 25

The Voice coaches are bringing a little church to the singing competition’s set ahead of Monday’s season 25 premiere.

For the show’s traditional season-opener group performance, John Legend, Reba McEntire, Chance the Rapper and Dan + Shay got together to sing a soulful rendition of Jackie DeShannon’s “Put a Little Love in Your Heart.” With the country duo’s Dan Smyers on guitar, all five of the coaches took turns singing lines from the song as a huge gospel choir surrounding the stage provided ethereal harmonies.

“All the world will be a better place/ For you and me,” the collective sang, each star’s unique voice contrasting with the others. “You just wait and see, wait and see.”

DeShannon peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” in 1969.

This season of The Voice launches Monday (Feb. 26), with Legend, McEntire and Chance all returning form previous panels. It’ll mark Smyers and Shay Mooney’s first time as coaches — the pair have previously been involved with the show as guest advisors — and the two will share a spinning chair and button. And yes, they’re aware that the setup might pose some challenges.

“When we were flying out [to L.A.] for the first time, we looked over at each other’s like, ‘Should we come up with some kind of strategy, like two taps on the knee is a yes?’ We didn’t realize when they started taping that there’s cameras on you from every angle at all times, you’re miked up,” Mooney told Billboard Friday. “If one of us is really feeling it, we’ve given each other permission to go ahead and smash that button and turn that chair around. But the two chairs, one button [thing] is an interesting dynamic.”

Billie Eilish Earns Her First No. 1 on Adult Pop Airplay Chart With ‘What Was I Made For?’

Billie Eilish scores her first No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Pop Airplay chart, as “What Was I Made For?” ascends to the top of the list dated March 2.

With the ballad, from the soundtrack to the blockbuster film Barbie, Eilish rules Adult Pop Airplay after logging three prior top 10s: “Bad Guy” (No. 6 peak, 2019), “Everything I Wanted” (No. 5, 2020) and “Therefore I Am” (No. 5, 2021).

The coronation is the latest honor for “What Was I Made For?,” which Eilish co-wrote with her brother, Finneas. Previously this year, the single won Grammy Awards for song of the year and best song written for visual media, and the Golden Globe for best original song. Next, it’s up for best original song at the Academy Awards March 10.

Trending on Billboard

Upon accepting the Grammy for song of the year Feb. 4, when Eilish also performed it, with Finneas on piano, she praised Barbie director and co-writer Greta Gerwig for making “the best movie of the year.” The film is nominated for eight Oscars.

Barbie: The Album has topped Billboard’s Soundtracks chart for 22 weeks, between last August and earlier this month. Meanwhile, the set’s “Dance the Night” by Dua Lipa also led Adult Pop Airplay, for two weeks in September – making the soundtrack the first to generate multiple No. 1s on the chart since City of Angels, which yielded Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” and Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel” in 1998-99. (The latter was originally released on the singer-songwriter’s 1997 album Surfacing.)

The Barbie soundtrack was released on Mattel/WaterTower/Atlantic Records, with Interscope Records (Eilish’s home label) promoting “What Was I Made For?” to radio.

Elsewhere, “What Was I Made For?” hit No. 6 on the Pop Airplay chart in December, becoming Eilish’s fourth top 10 (a sum including two No. 1s), and No. 17 earlier in February on Adult Contemporary, a new best for her on the latter list. It has reached No. 14 on the all-genre, multimetric Billboard Hot 100.

All Billboard charts dated March 2 will update on Billboard.com Tuesday, Feb. 27.

Watch Travis Kelce Pass Out Guitar Picks to Fans at Taylor Swift’s Sydney Eras Tour Show

Travis Kelce: football star, podcaster and now, professional guitar pick distributor.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end was in attendance at Taylor Swift‘s Eras Tour show in Sydney on Friday (Feb. 23), and in between dancing along to his superstar girlfriend’s set and hanging out with friends in the VIP tent, he passed out guitar picks to fans at Accor Stadium.

In one fan video, Kelce puts his football skills to use by intercepting a friendship bracelet thrown at him from a Swiftie. In return, he takes out a pick and tosses it to a fan.

In another clip, the Ohio native — whose two wrists are visibly decked out with handmade beaded bracelets — walks up to a line of fans mid-show, seemingly pulls more picks out of his pocket and hands them out.

Trending on Billboard

The role of passing out guitar picks to fans at shows has traditionally been occupied for Swift’s entire career by her father, Scott. But clearly, Kelce is joining the family business.

Toward the end of the concert, No. 87 got a shout-out from the “Anti-Hero” singer, who once again changed her “Karma” lyrics to: “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs coming straight home to me.” Swift previously made the lyric change when Kelce attended her show in Buenos Aires.

Kelce has been in Australia with the 14-time Grammy winner since Wednesday. On Thursday, the couple went to the Sydney Zoo together and were spotted holding hands and taking selfies.
