Beyoncé Helps Kamala Harris Get Into Presidential Formation With Permission to Use ‘Freedom’ At Rallies

Kamala Harris kicked off the first official day of her 2024 presidential run in epic fashion on Monday (July 22), raising more than $81 million in the first 24 hours after the nation’s current Vice President was endorsed by President Biden following the commander-in-chief’s announcement ending his bid for a second term.

The historic fundraising haul — which was boosted by 62% of donors making their first contribution to a campaign — was matched by an equally gaudy number of sign-ups for new volunteers in key swing states topping more than 28,000 as enthusiasm for Harris re-energized a democratic base that had grown pensive about Biden’s chances of defeating former President Donald Trump.

But perhaps the biggest bump of approval of all came from an unlikely source: Beyoncé. According to CNN, when Harris walked into her campaign headquarters on Monday night (July 22) night for her first official visit she did it to Bey’s 2016 Lemonade track “Freedom.” A source told CNN that Harris’ team got approval from the singer’s reps to use the song throughout her surprise second presidential bid.

Trending on Billboard

At press time spokespeople for Harris and Beyoncé had not returned Billboard‘s request for comment.

The Grammy-nominated song featuring Kendrick Lamar became the soundtrack for many of the street demonstrations around the nation following the May 2020 murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers. “Freedom, Freedom/ Where are you?/ ‘Cause I need freedom, too/ I break chains all by myself/ Won’t let my freedom rot in hell/ Hey! I’ma keep running/ ‘Cause a winner don’t quit on themselves,” Beyoncé sings on the track’s soaring chorus.

The network noted the Bey is notorious for being very guarded about licensing her music, but that she gave “quick approval” to the Harris campaign when they reached out to ask for permission to use “Freedom” on Monday, just a few hours before the campaign HQ entrance. At press time Beyoncé had not officially endorsed Harris, though CNN speculated that the permission to use “Freedom” suggested that the fledgling campaign has the singer’s support. Though Bey has not given Harris her official thumbs up, her mother, Tina Knowles, joined a group of stars giving the veep’s run their stamp of approval.

“New, Youthful, Sharp , , energy !!!!” Knowles wrote on Instagram alongside a pic of her with Harris. “Putting personal Ego , power and fame aside . That is the definition of a great leader, . Thank you, President Biden for your service and your leadership . Go Vice President Kamala Harris for President. Let’s Go”

Beyoncé has been a supporter of democratic candidates in the past, singing the National Anthem at Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2013, headlining a pre-election show for Hillary Clinton along with husband Jay-Z in 2016 and endorsing the Biden-Harris ticket in 2020.

Former prosecutor Harris wasted no time during her first public appearance in taking it to twice-impeached convicted felon Trump, who is making his third run at the White House after Biden sent him packing in 2020 after a single term; Trump continues to falsely claim that Biden did not win the election.

“I took on perpetrators of all kinds: Predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own game,” Harris told the crowd at her Wilmington, DE campaign HQ. “So hear me when I say I know Donald Trump’s type. And in this campaign, I will proudly put my record against his.” Once her 20-minute speech ended, Harris walked off stage to “Freedom” again.

The reported Beyoncé approval is in stark contrast to the long list of musicians who have repeatedly asked Trump to cease and desist from using their music during his campaign events. Similarly, a long list of A-list musicians have quickly leapt to support Harris’ bid — including Cardi B, Ariana Grande, Charli XCX, Katy Perry, Lil Nas X and many more — while the Trump-topped Republican National Convention last weekend featured appearances from a mixture of stars such as Kid Rock, Jason Aldean, Lee Greenwood and Chris Janson, as well as former wrestler Hulk Hogan, fired Fox News host Tucker Carlson, Russell Brand and Amber Rose.

“Get ready to own some of the most coveted pieces of art by one of the biggest music icons in the world,” reads a description from auction house Kings Auctions. “These one of a kind pieces of art aren’t just an investment, they are your chance to own a piece of music history.”

The sale will take place at an as-yet-undisclosed location in Los Angeles next month. “He was influenced by many art genres, from classical and architectural to pop art and even formal portraiture. He also had a great fondness for London and British customs,” the auction house added of the sketches, all of which are signed and some of which are double-sided.

The unique auction will feature one mega-lot, Lot #1, which requires an opening bid of $1 million for the entire collection. If a bidder meets that price then the auction will be over right away; otherwise each piece will be sold separately.

“Deemed ‘The Museum Collection’ because of its rare nature, these artworks by Jackson are as intimate as you can get. His inspirations are clearly communicated in each piece, each unique and reflective of the various times in the artists life,” Kings said in describing the works created by the singer who died in 2009 at age 50. “The featured piece will likely be the sketch of Martin Luther King which is a generous 36″ x 48″ in size. It is of course worthy of museum status. Other drawings include portraits of presidents and celebrities, himself, as well as Disney characters, abstracts, and more.”

In describing Jackson’s lifelong obsession with sketching, Kings said, “Jackson’s love for drawing started at an early age. When he was older he sought guidance from world renowned artists to fine tune his talent resulting in these rare pieces of art.  Despite being known for his talent in music and dance, it is clear that Jackson had an innate talent for visual art as well.”

Browse the collection here to see images Jackson sketched of shoes, doors, chairs, keys, bi-planes, the gates of his Neverland Ranch and flowers. The auction will be co-hosted by Selling Sunset‘s Bre Tiesi and an as-yet-unnamed special surprise host.

On Eve of Olympics Cardi B Gets Emotional Hyping Team USA Sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson: ‘I’m Really, Really Proud of You’

Like the rest of us, Cardi B is getting hyped for the kick-off of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris on Friday (July 26). But unlike the rest of us, the “Bongos” rapper actually got to sit down with one of the most exciting members of Team USA recently to get her nails done and share some positive affirmations.

“You stand out, because the fastest woman in the world? She’s a real lit girl,” Cardi said to sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson as the two had their nails tended to for an NBC segment hyping the network’s coverage of the games. “You’re like a girl that I could really hang out with, really chill with, really be cool with, really be like… GIRL!”

Cardi said Richardson — the Team USA sprinter who is a gold medal favorite to win the coveted 100 meter crown in Paris after losing her spot in the 2021 Tokyo Games over a positive marijuana test — is “one of us,” a compliment that seemed to really touch her new friend.

Trending on Billboard

“I’m really, really proud of you, seriously, because you came back stronger than ever with your talent,” said Cardi, who may have been projecting just a bit as she continues to tease out the long-awaited follow-up to her smash 2018 debut album, Invasion of Privacy. “You have, like, evolved.”

Blushing at all the compliments, Richardson said “enough about me” noting, “you are Miss Cardi B and I feel like the same way you’re sitting here saying the inspiration or the way that I touch people, I feel like you have that same impact. Just being yourself inspires so many people.”

That last bit almost brought Cardi to tears, as the rapper once again told Richardson how proud she is of her achievements on the track and the women exchanged more praise for each other’s strength and determination. “You almost walked away, but this is what you love,” Cardi said. “And rapping is what I love and I cannot walk away from what I love because of how other people make me feel.”

Richardson then said the quite part out loud, imploring Cardi to get back to work on her as-yet-untitled, unscheduled sophomore album so she can have new tunes to train to. “I need my race day album,” Richardson said. “I need some new songs!”

And while Cardi didn’t offer up any news, she said after agreeing to sit down just to talk, she was walking away “inspired” and “warm” from Richardson’s beaming positive vibes. “The energy… I feel it girl,” Cardi said tearing up. “You’re so special. Like you’re really more than just like an athlete, you’re really special.” The two women then hugged it out.

Cardi posted the clip on X and added another inspirational message, writing, “Wishing @itsshacarri sooooo much luck!! You bought so much emotion out of me because your words and your spirit is so powerful. Seeing your growth after people tried to turn their back on you is so inspirational to me.. You are more than just a athlete, you are a SUPERHERO and I can’t wait to see where the next 10 years take you because you already a legend.”

While, like the rest of us, Richardson waits for Cardi to drop that new music, she’s well on her way to making her own headlines after winning the world championship in the 100 last year and scoring a world season-best 10.71 to win the 100 at the U.S. trials last month.

Sabrina Carpenter Set to Replace Herself at No. 1 In U.K.

Sabrina Carpenter’s summer isn’t coming to an end just yet.

Based on midweek U.K. sales and streaming data captured by the Official Charts Company, Carpenter’s hit “Please Please Please” (via Island) should return to the summit for a seventh-non-consecutive week.

“Please Please Please” is the followup to “Espresso,” which has reigned over the national singles chart for 14 weeks, and is predicted to tumble 1-9.

Carpenter last Friday, July 19 entered the record books (again) by locking-up joint-leadership as the artist to spend the most consecutive weeks occupying both the top 2 chart positions concurrently, a record she holds with Ed Sheeran at five weeks.

If the midweek chart is a good indication, Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather” (Interscope) and Chappell Roan’s rising hit “Good Luck Babe” (Island) will complete the podium.

The top new debut should belong to Little Mix’s Jade, with her first solo single “Angel Of My Dreams” (RCA). It’s new at No. 5 on the chart blast.

As it stands, the Little Mix bandmate with the top-charting solo effort is Jesy Nelson, whose “Boyz” featuring Nicki Minaj debuted and peaked at No. 4. “Angel” will need to spread its chart wings in the second half of the week if Jade is to claim that title.

Also eyeing a top 10 debut is BTS’ JIMIN, with “Who” (Big Hit Entertainment). It’s new at No. 8 on the chart blast, and should benefit from the K-pop star’s performance of the song Monday night (July 22) on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Charts are published Friday, July 26.

According to Deadline, Jimin is “currently participating in his mandatory military service in South Korea, having enlisted in December 2023. His appearance was filmed before his enlistment.”

The high-energy performance aired on Fallon features Jimin and a group of dancers in an artfully staged abandoned building. It begins with Jimin’s emotive vocals, accompanied by intricate choreography that complemented the song’s longing lyrics.

Trending on Billboard

“We never met, but she’s all I see at night/Never mеt but she’s always on my mind,” confessed Jimin in the video, before singing: “Wanna give her thе world and so much more/Who is my heart waiting for?”

It’s not the first time Jimin has appeared on the late night show. In March last year, he made his U.S. solo debut performance of his ’80s-inspired song “Like Crazy.” He also sat down with Fallon to discuss a range of topics, including meeting President Joe Biden and keeping in touch with his BTS bandmates.

Jimin first announced his second solo album Muse back in June, with BigHit Music writing in a statement that the album would showcase his “expanded musical spectrum.”

“Following his first solo album, Face, where he sought to explore his true identity, ‘Muse’ documents his journey in search of the source of his inspiration,” the release continued.

The album also features collaborations with Loco and Sofia Carson.

Earlier this week, Jimin‘s Muse topped this week’s new music poll that features artists in various genres of music. Music fans voted in a poll published Friday (July 19) on Billboard, choosing the BTS star’s second solo album as their favorite new music release of the past week.

Muse brought in 68% of the vote on the poll, securing a notable edge ahead of new releases from Stray Kids (Ate), Joe Jonas (“Work It Out”), JADE (“Angel of My Dreams”), Childish Gambino (Bando Stone & The New World), and others.

Following 2023’s Face, which hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200, Muse continues Jimin’s experimentation. Jimin debuted solo in 2018 with “Promise” and became the first South Korean soloist to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Like Crazy” in 2023. He’s also set to release a docu-series, Are You Sure?!, with Jung Kook, chronicling their travels.

However, at the midweek point, Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS is challenging for the top spot, trailing by fewer than 200 chart units.

The boost for GUTS comes from the physical release of its deluxe version, GUTS (spilled), which has pushed the album back into the Top 10. GUTS initially debuted at No. 1 last year, securing one week at the top.

The punk duo SOFT PLAY, previously known as Slaves, are expected to achieve this week’s highest new entry with Heavy Jelly at No. 3. As Slaves, Isaac Holman and Laurie Vincent had three consecutive U.K. top 10 albums with Are You Satisfied?, Take Control, and Acts of Fear and Love.

Glass Animals’ fourth album, I Love You So F**ing Much, is on track to enter the charts at No. 4. This would be their second top 10 U.K. album following their breakout success with Dreamland, which peaked at No. 2 and featured the global hit “Heat Waves.”

Heavy metal legends Deep Purple might secure their 12th top 10 album and first in four years with their 23rd release, =1, currently projected to enter at No. 6. Indie rockers Los Campesinos! are aiming for their first Top 10 album with All Hell positioned at No. 10.

London-based rapper Morrisson is set to debut just outside the Top 10 with his first album British Trap Royalty at No. 11.

Meanwhile, BTS member JIMIN’s solo effort MUSE is aiming for a U.K. top 40 spot at No. 25, based on midweek data, while Childish Gambino’s final album, Bando Stone & The New World, is set to enter at No. 26.

Following their recent performance at BST Hyde Park, K-pop group STRAY KIDS could see their album ATE land at No. 30, marking their second top 40 entry on the Official Albums Chart.

All will be revealed when the Official Chart is published late Friday, July 26.

This marks the third time Farm Aid has been held in New York (and the second time in Saratoga Springs). In 2007, Farm Aid was held at Randall’s Island, New York, followed by Saratoga Springs in 2013. Farm Aid will feature not only music, but also homegrown food and agrarian experiences.

“We’re energized to be back in New York, said Farm Aid president and founder Nelson in a statement. “The farmers here have always found ways to innovate and contribute to their communities, even as they deal with uncertainties, extreme weather and policies that favor corporations over people. Farmers need us to stand with them as they work to grow our future.”

Over more than 35 years, Farm Aid has raised nearly $80 million to aid programs that help farmers survive and thrive. Farm Aid also promotes the acceleration of the Good Food Movement and family farms as well as works to shift the dominant system of industrial agriculture. Nelson, Young and Mellencamp organized the inaugural Farm Aid concert in 1985 to raise awareness and funds to combat the loss of family farms. Matthews joined the Farm Aid board of directors in 2001, while Margo Price joined the board in 2021.

A release for the 2024 Farm Aid noted that according to the 2022 U.S. Department of Agriculture Census, New York state lost 3,000 of its 33,000 farms between 2017 and 2022, as farms across the U.S. decline due to rising production and labor costs, consolidation and abnormal weather patterns. New York State has nearly 3,600 dairy farms that produce 15.7 billion pounds of milk annually, making New York the country’s fifth largest dairy state.

Tickets for Farm Aid 2024 will go on sale Friday, July 26, at 10 a.m. ET at livenation.com.

Per the film’s description, Deadpool & Wolverine follows Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), who has left his time as Deadpool behind before the Time Variance Authority, which monitors the timeline in which we exist, calls him in for a new mission and pairs him up with an even more reluctant Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) to save the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Reynolds recently opened up to SiriusXM about how he and Jackman were able to convince Madonna to approve the use of “Like a Prayer” in Deadpool & Wolverine. “It did involve a personal visit to Madonna, where we showed Madonna the sequence where ‘Like a Prayer’ would be used,” the film’s director Shawn Levy said.

Reynolds added, “Also, let’s preface it with the fact that they don’t license — that Madonna doesn’t just license the song, particularly that song. It was a big deal to ask for it and certainly a bigger deal to use it. We went over and met with her and and sort of showed her how it was being used, and where, and why.”

Madonna ended up granting them permission to use “Like a Prayer” and even provided some ideas on how to use the classic track in the film. “She gave a great note,” Reynolds recalled. “She watched it, and I’m not kidding, [she said], ‘You need to do this.’ And damn it, if she wasn’t like spot on.”

Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters on Friday (July 26).
