On the heels of dropping her eagerly anticipated Eternal Sunshine album, Ariana Grande also debuted the futuristic video for the collection’s new single, “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)” on Friday morning (March 8).
The singer teased the clip last week with an image from the waiting room in which she signs a consent form stating, “You have given extensive thought behind your decision and give ‘Brighter Days Inc.’ the exclusive permission to remove this person completely from your memory,” as her pen hovers over the box marked “No,” before the 30-year-old pop star opts for “Yes” at the last second and signing her name as “Peaches.”

That scene from the Christian Breslauer-directed visual is the opening act of a moody video that finds Grande — wearing a furry grey coat over a mini dress and knee-high boots and sporting some dramatic, tribal-like makeup around her left eye — sitting in the drab, wood-paneled lobby of the Brighter Days Inc. clinic awaiting an appointment with a doctor. When Peaches’ name is called, Grande grabs a white box filled with memories and enters a surgery arena, where she lays back on a chair as she begins to sing the ballad’s introspective lyrics.

“I didn’t think you’d understand me/ How could you ever even try,” she sings as a nurse takes a stuffed bear out of the box and a screen shows the teddy’s brain scan. “I don’t want to tip-toe, but I don’t want to hide/ But I don’t want to feed this monstrous fire,” she continues over the song’s bubbling beat while being fitted with a silver headband with glowing red contacts on her temples.

The scene then jumps to a 1980s-style video game arcade as the tempo builds and Grande and a boyfriend pluck the bear from a claw machine and she promises to “wait for your love.” The heartbreak ballad about vowing to pretend until a love is rekindled is a travelogue of good times — including a shout-out to the final iconic birthday cake scene in 1984 coming-of-age classic Sixteen Candles — mixed with the present-day footage of Grande receiving the love-erasing procedure.

The storyline of the video — which ends with Grande blithely passing her old love and his new girlfriend while strolling with her new man — should come as no surprise given Grande’s avowed love of Jim Carrey’s similarly themed 2004 love removal machine sci-fi drama Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which Grande tapped as an inspiration for the album’s title.

In that Michel Gondry-directed movie, Carrey and girlfriend Kate Winslet’s characters, Joel and Clementine, undergo brain surgery to wipe all the memories of their painful breakup. So, in the lead-up to the album’s release, Grande posted photos and videos in which she dressed up in outfits and hairstyles inspired by the film’s leading lady.

The midtempo track is the second single from Eternal Sunshine, following the January Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping hit “Yes, And?” Grande has previously said that she wouldn’t be issuing any more songs ahead of her seventh studio album’s release. Grande will be the musical guest on this weekend’s Saturday Night Live alongside Dune 2’s Josh Brolin.

Sexyy Red juggles her man and her sneaky link in the mischievous “I Might” music video, featuring Summer Walker, released Friday (March 1). Jennifer Lopez dropped the summer-ready video for her remix of “Can’t Get Enough” on Monday (Jan. 29). The new visual cooked up by JLo and director Tanu Muiño for the bouncy first single from the singer/actress’ upcoming This Is Me… Now album features a guest verse from Latto, with both women taking it to the street in the dance-heavy clip.
In keeping with the narrative arc about love addiction in Lopez’s upcoming This Is Me… Now: A Love Story Amazon original film, the new video opens with Lopez getting harassed by a group of sharply dressed reporters bombarding her with probing questions. “’What are you chasing?’,” one asks, while another wonders, “‘What’s it all about?,’” and a third inquiring mind shouts, “‘Jennifer, what really matters to you?’”

Lopez’s answer, of course, is “Love.”

Cue the track and Lopez writhing in a gauzy white robe on a bed — with a killer view of the city through her giant picture windows — as she stares lustily into a mirror. The camera then follows Lopez outside, where she walks confidently onto a city street, loses her tan jacket and struts through the middle of traffic. This, naturally, leads to a Jenny on the block dance routine, with Lopez and an impromptu group of male dancers busting moves in an intersection.

Lopez then slips under a dinner table on a night out with her man, crawling across the floor sensually while also walking toward Latto on a soundstage, with both women dressed in deep red, body-hugging dresses. “Call the doctor, I don’t see nobody but you/ Do I still love you? Baby, is the sky blue?/ Spoil a b–ch down and he faithful to me too/ You know you the reason why they hatin’ on me, boo,” Latto raps as Lopez rubs up on her.

The rest of the video appears to compile footage from the short film, much of it consisting of Lopez in various thong-baring outfits, including a sure-to-be-GIFFed sequence in which she takes an outdoor shower in a black string bikini for an audience of shirtless hunks floating in a reflecting pool.

The original version of “Can’t Get Enough” dropped on Jan. 10 as the first taste of Lopez’s long-awaited ninth studio album, which will be released on Feb. 16. An accompanying film directed by Dave Meyers will hit Amazon Prime Video the same day.

Paula Abdul is loving Ariana Grande’s “Yes, And?” music video. In the new clip, released on Friday (Jan. 12), Grande wears a ballet-inspired outfit with a hat that pays homage to legends like Janet Jackson and Abdul — and the nod doesn’t end there. The clip, directed by Christian Breslauer, seems to take inspiration from […]

At midnight, Ariana Grande made her grand return to music with the assertive new single “Yes, And?”
Released as the lead track for her forthcoming seventh album, the boundary-setting song makes clear that the pop star is too busy living her “authentic life,” as she sings, to be concerned with what others are saying.

In the just-released music video, Grande doubles down. As shown in the teaser clip, a handful of critics are seen entering an industrial-looking warehouse — and with plenty of opinions in hand. “You know, I think I liked her better when her ponytail was a few centimeters higher,” says one. “I mean, who cares if she’s happy? I don’t want happy. I want Ari,” quips another.

As they’re about to walk into the room in which they will see what Ariana has to present, an earlier group is seen walking out sweaty and in awe. As the next group takes their seats (under a heat lamp, no less, perhaps a nod to the kind of heated spotlight Grande lives under), the camera pans to a series of stone sculptures before landing on one of the pop star front and center.

And much to viewers’ satisfaction, as the music begins, the immobile figures shatter — and out struts Ari.

Wearing a ballet-inspired outfit and character shoes, she completes her look with a hat that pays homage to legends like Janet Jackson and Paula Abdul — and the nod doesn’t end there. The clip, directed by Christian Breslauer, seems to take inspiration from Abdul’s visual for her own “Cold Hearted Snake,” leaning deeper into the late-’80s energy of the song itself.

By the video’s end, Grande assumes the position her statue was in at the start — and just as she hits the exact pose, she’s turned back to stone. The potential takeaways are plentiful: Is it a commentary on fragility or strength? Is it a reminder that rough exteriors are built upon hardship as a means of protection?

There’s really only one certainty: No matter how the message is perceived, Grande doesn’t really care. She knows what it means to her.

Following the release of Sabrina Carpenter’s blood-filled “Feather” music video on Halloween, a Catholic priest who allowed a scene from the clip to be filmed inside a Brooklyn church has been relieved of his administrative duties, according to the New York Times.

In the video, the 24-year-old pop star facilitates the death of a series of obnoxious men, who relentlessly hit on her throughout the video. The cat-callers meet their karma by getting run over by a truck; fighting each other to death; and getting choked by the tie in an elevator shaft. At the end of the clip, Carpenter dances around a church at the men’s funerals, wearing a short black tulle dress and veil and posing with religious items at the alter, including a coffin that reads “RIP B—-.”

That last scene was filmed at Our Lady of Mount Carmel-Annunciation Parish in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Following the music video’s release, Bishop Robert J. Brennan told the Catholic News Agency he is “appalled at what was filmed at Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Brooklyn,” noting that “The parish did not follow diocesan policy regarding the filming on Church property, which includes a review of the scenes and script.”

The pastor, Msgr. Jamie J. Gigantiello, was subsequently relieved of his administrative duties overseeing the church, per New York Times. In an apology posted to the church’s Facebook page, Gigantiello revealed that he approved the filming in September after not finding anything negative about Carpenter online in an “effort to further strengthen the bonds between the young creative artists who make up a large part of this community.” He also told NYT that he was presented the video shoot idea as a funeral scene, but the result in the music video was “not what was initially presented to me.”

Billboard has reached out to Carpenter’s team for comment.

“Feather” is the latest song off Carpenter’s July 2022 album Emails I Can’t Send to get the music video treatment, following “Nonsense,” “Because I Liked a Boy,” “Fast Times” and “Skinny Dipping.” Upon its release, the album debuted at No. 23 on the Billboard 200, marking the rising pop star’s highest peak on the chart to date.
