This year’s MTV Video Music Awards will take place Sept. 11, a full four decades since the first VMAs helped the nascent cable network make a place for itself, as well as the music video format. Back then, some executives already had a crystal-clear picture of its possibilities, while others just saw static. Video eventually migrated from TV screen to mobile phone, cable to Internet. Billboard has been binge-watching the entire time.

Monkee Business

Groups from ABBA to Queen had made videos since the 1970s, but it took one of The Monkees to see the future. A full year before MTV went live, the March 1, 1980, issue of Billboard reported on Mike Nesmith’s Nickelodeon TV series, Popclips. “The concept is to feature video images with songs separated by a videodisk jockey,” an article explained. Nesmith predicted that “every professional musician” would soon have to adapt. Was this “MTV see, Monkee do”?

Full Speed Ahead

Then came the new wave flood. Elektra chairman Bob Krasnow told Billboard in an Aug. 25, 1984, article that “MTV exposure for the accompanying videos” fueled The Cars’ Heartbeat City album. Others hit the brakes. “I think those people who are out spending, trying to cash in on new technology, will get their fingers burned,” predicted another executive in the same issue. A Sept. 1, 1984, op-ed shared a fear that video would kill the radio star: “How many of the superstars of yesterday… would be denied contracts in 1984 because of a perceived ‘lack of viability’ as video artists?”

Ride the Wave

Fans wanted their MTV. “Our research shows that young record buyers are greatly affected by the channel’s airplay and promotional efforts,” reported the Sept. 8, 1984, Billboard, and “40.1% of those influenced by MTV” preferred new wave. That was reflected by the winners at the first VMAs, which took place Sept. 14, 1984, including The Cars, Cyndi Lauper and Eurythmics. But the big winner was the channel itself. “When MTV signed on in August 1981,” declared the Oct. 13, 1984, issue, “music videos changed the face of rock in the blink of an eye.”

Computer Love

With the new millennium came a new frontier. In the Sept. 4, 2004, issue, Billboard predicted that “two new mobile platforms hitting the market this year” — the Palm and Pocket PC — “represent what will become a powerful new way to distribute and consume music and music videos.” Handheld devices, it predicted, would “become a key part of the modern lifestyle.”

YouTube-ular

By the mid-2000s, industry executives longed for reruns of the days “when music videos, not longform reality and lifestyle programs, ruled the roost at MTV,” reported the Feb. 12, 2005, issue. “My biggest disappointment is that there’s no longer an ‘M’ for music in MTV,” said Clive Davis. And as the airwaves dried up, data streams began to flow. The Oct. 14, 2006, issue reported that “online sites such as MySpace, YouTube and Yahoo are pursuing [MTV’s] audience” for music videos. Seven years later, the Billboard Hot 100 began blending YouTube streams into its data pool.

This story appears in the Aug. 31, 2024, issue of Billboard.

Guess we know what Tyla‘s go-to karaoke song is, according to her new “Breathe Me” music video that dropped Tuesday (Sept. 3). Picking up where her “Truth or Dare” music video left off seven months ago and featuring the same love interest, the “Breathe Me” visual takes place on a random late night in Osaka, […]

Flau’jae [Johnson], who’s about to start her junior season as an LSU Tiger and currently has the most lucrative NIL deals in women’s college basketball, just dropped a video with both her head coach and Lil Wayne. If you told us 10 years ago that a current college basketball player would be doing songs with Weezy and had her coach all up in her music videos, we’d call you crazy, but that’s the landscape for today’s NCAA athlete.

Directed by Terrius Mykel, the video starts off with LSU women’s basketball head coach Kim Mulkey drawing up a play for Flau’jae and her LSU teammates in a huddle. She proceeds to go off and even shouts out her pops, late rapper Camoflauge while holding her 2023 National Championship trophy as Wayne stands next to her. “And I just won a natty, did it for my daddy/ They seein’ my face, man, I’m in the paper/ Man, I’m one of them ones, you see thе trophy/ You don’t gotta respond if you really know me,” she raps.

The track appeared on her Best of Both Worlds EP that she released earlier this month in June and she greatly appreciated that Wayne, her teammates, and her coach were able to show up for the video. In a press release, she had nice things to say about them all.

Of Wayne, she said:“Working with Lil Wayne on the ‘Came Out A Beast’ video was a dream come true. He’s a legend in the game, and being able to collaborate with him on this track was surreal. The energy on set was incredible, and we both brought that fire to the video. This is just the beginning, and I’m excited for everyone to see what we’ve created.”

Of her LSU women’s basketball teammates, she said:“Having my teammates in the ‘Came Out A Beast’ video was a real moment for me. We’re all grinding together on and off the court, so bringing them into this part of my life felt natural. It’s cool to show that connection in a different way, outside of basketball. I’m really thankful they were a part of this moment with me.”

Of her head coach Kim Mulke, she said:“Having Coach Mulkey in the ‘Came Out A Beast’ video was special. She’s always been in my corner, both on and off the court, pushing me to be my best. Her support means everything to me, so it was amazing to have her be part of this moment. It just shows how much she believes in all of us, not just as players, but as individuals with our own dreams.”

Flau’jae can make the case that she’s the best athlete rapper out right now.

Big Sean has a had a hard time on the Internet over the last couple of years (something he’s touched on in the past), and his latest song and video show that rap fans aren’t letting up.
If you noticed that Baby Keem was trending on X earlier Wednesday, that’s because some fans on social media are claiming that Sean is using his flow, while others are pointing out that he’s channeling his older stuff like “Paradise.” There isn’t a consensus, as fans on social media seem to be split. We think he’s just trying something different and folks are letting his rocky relationship with Keem’s older cousin Kendrick Lamar get in the way.

The Detroit rapper talked to Charlamagne tha God earlier this month, where they talked about a leaked version of Lamar’s song “Element” where he dissed Sean. “That song came out and he changed that bar, it wasn’t on the song anymore, it was a leaked verse,” Sean said. “I had to keep that in mind because I was pissed when I heard it. He changed that on his own. He probably came to the conclusion it was nothing.”

He then revealed that he and Kendrick talked and they hashed things out. “He apologized in a sense for going that far to that sh—t coming out,” Sean told Charlamagne. “When that sh—t leaks, people are like, ‘Oh, you heard what he said about you?’ I’m not a clout-chasing a– n—a, I’m solid and I stand on mine. We already talked about it, I already got an apology for it.”

The Detroit rapper has been on fire and he continues his hot streak with a new song and video that arrived Tuesday (Aug. 20). Directed by Diamond Visuals and presented by Lyrical Lemonade, “Yes” shows the artist at his most confident. He’s playing around with flows and rapping like his rent is due.

“New s—t might get spooky, had to bring the ways back/ Stupid lil’ b—-h wan’ reminisce about some s—t from way back/ When you slackin’ on the job, that’s when they try and take that,” he spits.

Sean has been extremely active this year.

This is his fourth single already this year as he gears up to drop his highly anticipated sixth album. He’s started the year off with “Precision” in March, then he dropped “Yes” in July (which makes this Keem “controversy” all the more confusing,) and in August he followed up with “On Up” about his newborn and the Alchemist-assisted “Together Forever.”

He’s also featured on “Shut Up” with Jessie Reyez, “Tobey” with Eminem and BabyTron, and DJ Premier with Lil Wayne and Rick Ross. And let us not forget about his impressive On the Radar freestyle over Aaliyah‘s “If Your Girl Only Knew.”

Better Me Than You was originally supposed to be released on Aug. 9, but Big Sean decided to push it back due to scheduling conflicts. There’s still no word on an official release date.

Check out a few fan reactions to Sean’s “Yes” video below:

Big Sean originally teased a clip of this song and video on social media last month, and it’s finally here: Sean and The Alchemist released “Together Forever” on Friday (Aug. 16). Fans were especially excited to hear the Detroit rapper over Alchemist production and were stoked to see the legendary producer supporting Sean in the […]

Laila!, the talented viral sensation out of Brooklyn (and Yasiin Bey‘s daughter), just dropped the official video for her single “Not My Problem.” And not only is this coming off the heels of the Cash Cobain posse cut remix that features 14 (count ’em) rappers, she’s also announcing the release date of her debut album […]

If there is a single image that pops to mind in many fan’s brains when they think of late MC Juice WRLD it’s likely of the rapper’s laconic face sticking up from a hole in the floor in the video for his breakthrough 2018 hit “Lucid Dreams.” That might explain why it’s the first one […]
