In partnership with distribution company UnitedMasters, the Pepsi Music Lab — which took place in New York City on Oct. 25 to Oct. 27 — offered 12 rising artists mentorship and coaching from music industry professionals, brand building workshops, performance camps and more to help hone their craft and allow them to continue on the path to rising stardom.

“Pepsi is a brand that has a proven global track record for minting music superstars and shaping some of the most iconic moments in music and pop culture. Now, we are excited to shine a spotlight on the next generation of artists with our new Pepsi Music Lab platform,” says Todd Kaplan, chief marketing officer at Pepsi. “By removing barriers within the music industry, we can provide these talented artists with the resources, knowledge, exposure, and connections to help accelerate their growth as musicians and further enable their success – it will truly make a positive impact on the futures of the artists we believe will push the industry forward.”

The Artists
Pepsi Music Lab’s class of ’22-’23 features 12 independent musicians across genres handpicked by UnitedMasters. The list includes:

  • AKINYEMI, Rap – New York, N.Y.
  • Amira Unplugged, Multi-genre – Stone Mountain, Ga.
  • Brian V., Pop – New York, N.Y.
  • Cain Lofton, Multi-genre – Chicago, Ill.
  • GODBY, Rap – Washington, D.C.
  • Kbthesinger, Hip-Hop – St. Louis, Miss.
  • Lexie Hayden, Country – Nashville, Tenn.
  • Lynnea M, Pop – Los Angeles, Calif.

  • Oompa, Hip-Hop – Boston, Mass.
  • SERGIO, Pop/Latino – Redwood City, Calif.
  • Tarik, Hip-Hop – Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Mentors and Workshops

The artists arrived to Pepsi Music Lab’s location at 10 Jay Street on Oct. 25 for an opening ceremony and gathering at the location. On Oct. 26, the industry hopefuls were treated to a series of workshops, first from independent rapper LaRussellwho advised the singer-songwriters on how to build their personal brand-building through social media and marketing tools.

In the afternoon, the artists had the opportunity to speak with Director X — known for his work on videos for Jay-Z, Rihanna, Drake, Fifth Harmony, One Direction and more — who mentored the rising stars on how they could make visual content that has a lasting impact in their careers going forward.

Sandwiched in between a press training workshop, Roc Nation senior vice president Lenny S spoke to the selected artists about the importance of developing and maintaining their connections, while choreographer Laurieann Gibson gave performance coaching and choreography lessons to help improve their stage presence.

The third day of the training camp (Oct. 27) saw the artists taking headshots with Lenny S, setting up sizzle reels with Director X and recording sample radio spots with Dwayne Crawford, engineer and editor of Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club.

The Feedback

“I’ve been in Nashville for seven years creating country music so being part of this program exposes me to artists from all genres of music and it’s allowed me to be able to create and collaborate with others, in the future,” Hayden told Billboard of the experience. “One of the biggest takeaways I got was from LaRussell… he said, ‘Don’t set goals, work hard — and they’ll come to you and it will happen if you work hard.’”

“I’ve been following LaRussell for a while, and his drive and the way he approaches his social content and holds himself in interviews is really inspiring. It constantly gives me the motivation and redefined my purpose and an artist,” Queens native AKINYEMI added of the the rapper’s Oct. 26 workshop.

Nohemy focused on the choreography workshop in the three day lab, and shared that Gibson’s class was the most helpful to her: “Performing is a very big thing for me, so getting tips from Laurieann is going to make a huge difference in my stage presence and will help me be more in time with my moves and more in control of my energy. For people that know me, I’m very energetic on stage, so being able to know when and how to channel that energy throughout an hour show I think is really important.”

And while getting to sit in on all of the workshops was a great experience for Lynnea M., the connections she was able to cement was her biggest takeaway, saying, “Meeting other artists is going to help us because we have those extra connections — not just with the artists, but with the people in the industry that we met as well.”

At the end of the three-day program, all artists who participated received individual plaques commemorating the time they spent in Pepsi Music Lab’s class of 2022-2023.

“Pepsi has a long history of helping great artists break through, reshaping pop culture and leaving an unforgettable impression on all of us,” says Steve Stoute, ceo and founder of UnitedMasters. “Now in partnership with UnitedMasters, Pepsi is empowering the next generation of creators, helping them hone their craft and develop their talent so that they can generate the next big moment. Connecting independent artists to a brand with this rich legacy is the formula for creating a new future of music.”

However, Cardi B wasn’t the only star who took on the role of Marge Simpson this spooky season. Over the weekend, Lizzo covered her whole body in yellow makeup and slipped on Marge’s signature towering blue hair for an equally perfect look. “I AM HIM — HIMMY NEUTRON — MARGE HIMPSON,” the “Better in Color” singer captioned a series of pics in which she posed as Marge, complete with red heels and a matching strand of pearls accenting a shimmery green dress as she perfected a meme in which Simpson covered her face with her hands.

HARDY Marries Caleigh Ryan in Nashville Ceremony

Singer-songwriter HARDY ain’t her boyfriend anymore! The newly minted ACM songwriter of the year — known for penning “Boyfriend,” “One Beer,” and “Sand in My Boots” — wed Caleigh Ryan on Saturday, Oct. 29, in a ceremony in front of approximately 350 people at Diamond Creek Farms in Nashville.

People shared exclusive photos and details from the event, noting that Ryan kept certain wedding traditions, with her wedding dress serving as “something new,” HARDY’s baby bonnet as “something old,” her grandmother’s lucky penny as “something borrowed” and her aunt’s ring as “something blue.”

Of the couple’s vows, HARDY told People, “We’re going to write our own vows and do them privately. We want the ceremony to be like 30 seconds long. We just want to have a big party for everybody. I’m trying to avoid having a complete meltdown in front of everyone, and I don’t think I could get through vows at the altar, and she’s the same. The vows will be for us. It doesn’t have to be for everybody else.”

Several of HARDY’s fellow country artists took part in the festivities, including Lauren Alaina, Dierks Bentley, Travis Denning, Lindsay Ell, Ernest and Morgan Wallen.

RaeLynn proudly showed off her time taking part in one of the wedding’s activities, “Hardy’s Tattoo Shop,” where guests could get inked. Additionally, Ryan shared photos on her Instagram account of the “beer burros” at their reception, which carried baskets filled with beer around to guests in attendance.

Ryan also posted a series of photos of herself with a donkey on Instagram. “Kate is one of our adorable beer burros who will be joining us for our cocktail hour and serving beer to all of our guests ? HOW CUTE IS THIS?! Like WHAT?!” she captioned the carousel. “This was literally the first non-negotiable wedding planning decision I made when we started. I knew I wanted to incorporate animals somehow, so when I saw this I think I had a little mini heart attack.”

Alaina also shared a sweet moment from the reception: Ryan’s bouquet toss, as Alaina chased down the bouquet and happily ran, holding the bouquet over her head and shouting “Yes!” for the camera.

HARDY and Ryan began dating in 2018, and became engaged in August 2021, with HARDY proposing at The Lyric Theater in Oxford, Miss.

The wedding came just weeks after HARDY and members of his crew weathered a harrowing tour bus crash on their return trip to Nashville after performing at Country Thunder Bristol in Tennessee.

Nina Dobrev and Shaun White Are ‘Running Up That Hill’ in Halloween Recreation of ‘Stranger Things’

Still running up that hill! Nina Dobrev and Shaun White treated their fans to a spooky surprise by dressing up as Vecna and Max Mayfield of Stranger Things for Halloween.

“Happy halloween,” the Vampire Diaries actress captioned the video on Instagram, which depicted the lovebirds reenacting the now-famous scene set to Kate Bush‘s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” from season four of the Netflix sci-fi hit.

In the clip, the Olympic snowboarder steps into Sadie Sink’s character with help from a long red ponytail, ’80s-style windbreaker, Walkman and fake blood running from his eyes. Meanwhile, Dobrev goes all-out as Jamie Campbell Bower’s big bad from the Upside Down in a head-to-toe costume rendering her completely unrecognizable.

Thanks to its inclusion in Stranger Things, Bush’s defining single from 1985 earned a massive second life more than 35 years after its initial release, becoming one of the biggest radio hits of the summer and roaring all the way to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The new wave anthem also blew up into a 21st century hit all over the world, reigning atop the charts in Bush’s native U.K., Australia and beyond.

The resurrected success of the song even led to the famously reclusive Bush giving a rare interview to the BBC back in June, during which she said, “It’s so exciting. It’s quite shocking really, isn’t it? The whole world’s gone mad.”

After Max escaped Vecna’s clutches, “Running Up That Hill” was also remixed for the trailer teasing the final episodes of season four in July.

Patrick Haggerty, Country Pioneer Behind Cult Favorites Lavender Country, Dies at 78

Patrick Haggerty, the frontman for acclaimed country outfit Lavender Country, died Monday morning (Oct. 31). The news was announced on the group’s Facebook page, in a post that also explained that Haggerty had suffered a stroke weeks earlier. He was 78.

Self-described as a “screaming Marxist b—h singer,” the openly gay Haggerty joined up with the rest of Lavender Country in Seattle in the early ’70s. The group released just one album with their original lineup, an eponymous 1973 effort, making little commercial impact at the time — and the group eventually fell apart due to a lack of mainstream interest and disenchantment with their own community. (“The Stonewall Movement morphed into a Democratic Party machine,” Haggerty offered to Billboard earlier this year.)

However, the album endured as an underground favorite, thanks in large part to Haggerty’s biting wit and vivid, sometimes explicit lyrics. The set was reissued multiple times in the 21st century to a new audience, and the group reunited sporadically for live shows and re-recordings. In 2019, with a new lineup, they self-released an original album, Blackberry Rose and Other Songs and Sorrows, which was reissued with a new tracklist by the indie label Don Giovanni earlier this year, drawing strong reviews.

Haggerty continued through the decades to rail against the oppressive systems that marginalized his and other voices within the country music industry. “For every notable country star in Nashville there’s a thousand other artists who are just as good or better, frequently better, who go unsung and unacknowledged and have to jerk lattes just to pay the rent so they can continue to do music,” he lamented to Billboard in 2021. “That’s the star system — and darling, that’s really f–ked up … The corporate Nashville folks are purporting to be the music of the working class, but you can’t sing about union organizing, or the anti-racist struggle, or class struggle.”

However, he also appreciated that society had evolved enough to make him something of a cult hero later in his life — allowing him a platform, however modest, from which he could preach his brand of gospel without compromise to his image or message. “I get to use Lavender Country — unfettered and uncompromised — for the very reason I made it in the first place: To be a conduit for social change,” he raved to Billboard in the same interview. “I can put on bedazzled shirts and strut my beauty like anybody else on stage, but my real beauty is the way I chose to live my life.”

Haggerty’s loss was mourned on Twitter Monday by his Don Giovanni label, referring to him as “one of the funniest, kindest, bravest, and smartest people I ever met. He never gave up fighting for what he believed in, and those around him who he loved and took care of will continue that fight.”

While Joe’s outfit was on point for the spookiest day of the year, another one of the Jonas crew took his costume a step further. The youngest Jonas, Frankie, cooked up the perfect sibling troll when he and girlfriend Anna Olson dressed up as Joe and his ex, Taylor Swift. Swift and Joe briefly dated from summer to fall 2008 before breaking up in what Taylor described as a 27-second phone call.

Frankie posted a pic of the pair recreating a scene from the former couple performing the Swift song “Should Have Said No” from the 2008 concert movie Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience. They even showed off their version of the infamous Jonas Brothers’ “purity rings” with a pair of hands with intricate bling and the message, “Matching Purity rings XOXO.”

Frankie and Anna continued the fun on TikTok, where they posted another video spiked with video game battle noises and the message, “Fighting off the horny celibate teens as joe and taylor from the 3d movie.”

‘Glee’s Mr. Schuester Was Originally Written for Justin Timberlake & Not Matthew Morrison, Ryan Murphy Says

Justin Timberlake fans might just cry Ryan Murphy a river when they find out which Glee character the show creator had in mind for the pop star. In a revealing Monday (Oct. 31) appearance on a new podcast called And That’s What You REALLY Missed, the show’s creator dropped a bombshell on Gleeks everywhere: The character of choir director Will Schuester was originally written for JT, not Matthew Morrison.

“When we were writing the pilot — I’ve never really talked about this — that pilot was written for Justin Timberlake,” Murphy told the podcast’s hosts Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz, who starred on Glee as Artie Abrams and Tina Cohen-Chang, respectively. “Mr. Schue was written for Justin.”

That was all Murphy could divulge before the episode ended. However, more of McHale and Ushkowitz’s interview with the Emmy Award-winning screenwriter will be shared in a second episode next week.

The Timberlake tease wasn’t the only revelation Murphy shared before the episode wrapped, though. The American Horror Story creator also revealed that Glee was originally imagined as being much darker, and that Mr. Schue was first written as a drug addict.

The first ever script that would eventually become Glee was written by the show’s co-creator Ian Brennan, whose friend presented the script to Murphy at a gym. “Like serendipity, I went to the gym and I was in a towel and a guy went up and handed me a script and he said, ‘I had a feeling you were in show choir, am I right?’ And I was like ‘Yeah,’” Murphy shared with Ushkowitz and McHale, who brought up that Mr. Schue had also inappropriately touched his students in early imaginings of the show.

“Mr. Schue, I believe, was a crystal meth addict in Ian’s script,” Murphy added. “The NC-17 version of show choir with a weird protagonist who was unraveling.”

Ye shared a graphic photo of Emmett Till, who was tortured and lynched at just 14 years old after being accused of offending a white woman in 1955. He also posted a series of photos of Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel, who wrote in an op-ed for the Financial Times last week that West’s business partners, including companies that profit off his music — such as Apple, Spotify, Adidas and his touring partners — should stop working with the star.

Ye references Emanuel by name in his caption, writing, “Can you find a place for the Donda Academy kids to go to school that’s properly zoned for a school? I got about 60 children that have no place to be as they look to transfer.”

He also brought up the Donda Academy basketball team, which was removed by Scholastic Play-By-Play Classics from the season schedule following the rapper’s string of anti-Semitic and racist comments. “They tried to dismantle our basketball team. Those boys are being penalized without reason,” Ye wrote. “Even professional athletes were threatened by their owners to disassociate.”

Ye then referred to his recent repercussions as “what modern post social media #Blackmirror warfare looks like,” adding three bullet points that read “economic lynching,” “digital lynching” and “bankrupting my social credit score.”

“You tried to destroy my life after all the money I’ve made for the ‘business’ people,” he wrote. “At least as I burn to the stake in front of the whole world… // everyone now knows who they need to really be afraid of. And now eeeeveryone knows how much power you ‘Business’ people actually have.”

He continued, “To everyone in the world! // Take me as an example of what will happen if you show any frustration. Your frustration does not matter! We declare today the day when no human is allowed to be human. Please note that I have never physically hurt anyone.”

See Ye’s full post here.

The star’s Instagram account was restricted again on Monday (Oct. 31) following his latest reported violation of the platform’s policies. “We deleted content from @kanyewest for violating our policies and placed a restriction on the account,” a Meta spokesperson told Complex. “We may place restrictions on accounts that repeatedly break our rules, for example, we may temporarily restrict them from posting, commenting, or sending DMs.”

This latest locking of Ye’s account comes after Instagram and Twitter both placed temporary restrictions on his social media accounts after he posted antisemitic comments earlier in October

Kanye West’s Instagram Restricted Again Over Latest Standards Violation

Kanye West‘s Instagram account has been restricted again following the rapper’s latest reported violation of the platform’s policies. Instagram’s parent company, Meta, confirmed the restriction to Billboard on Monday (Oct. 31).

While the spokesperson did not highlight specific posts that led to the latest lock on West’s account, the rep said IG had deleted content from the rapper’s Instagram feed due to the unspecified posts violating the platform’s standards. The rep also noted that the social media platform can restrict accounts that repeatedly break its rules, with those restrictions including limiting a user’s ability to post, comment or send direct messages.

The Meta rep also confirmed that the rapper’s account has this time been locked for 30 days.

This latest lockdown comes after Instagram and Twitter both placed temporary restrictions on his social media accounts after he posted antisemitic comments earlier in October.

Billboard has not been able to reach a spokesperson for West.

Complex, who was first to report Instagram’s latest action against the rapper’s account, added that Ye appeared to address this new restriction on the right-leaning Parler social media site he recently said he plans to purchase.

According to the publication, a screenshot purported to be of that Parler post shared on Twitter found West reportedly writing, “Got kicked off Instagram for 30 days for telling Russel Simmons that I was going to make ‘you know who’ have better contracts and business practices. Jesus is king.”

West had just returned to Instagram days ago after the social media platform first restricted his account.

Selena Gomez Urges Fans to Vote for Stacey Abrams in Georgia Gubernatorial Election

Selena Gomez took to social media on Monday (Oct. 31) to encourage her followers to vote for Stacey Abrams in the race for Georgia governor.

“Hi, everyone in Georgia,” the singer says directly to the camera on her Instagram Story. “My friend Stacey Abrams is in an extremely close race to become governor. I’ve worked with Stacey personally, and her commitment to improving mental health access in Georgia is extremely important to me, as the state currently ranks 48th in the nation.”

“Please grab some friends and vote early,” she concluded in her message before directing fans to visit the Democratic candidate’s website and adding one final urge to “please vote!”

Abrams is running in the state’s gubernatorial race against Republican Brian Kemp. The two faced off in a heated final debate ahead of the Nov. 8 election on Sunday night (Oct. 30), covering everything from abortion access and crime to inflation and the economy.

Meanwhile, on a trip this weekend to New York City, Gomez made a pit stop to revisit her Wizards of Waverly Place roots after testing positive for COVID-19 and canceling her planned appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. (“A friendly reminder COVID is still out there. Get updated on your boosters,” she wrote on Instagram at the time.)

The superstar also dropped the trailer earlier this month for her upcoming mental health documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me, which will premiere Friday (Nov. 4) on Apple TV+.
