Spotify Launches ‘Women of Iran’ Playlist Amidst Continued Women-Led Revolution in Iran

Spotify has launched a new playlist to amplify the voices of Iranian women, who have for the last four months have led the fight towards human rights in Iran.

The playlist, titled “Women of Iran,” includes songs by iconic Iranian singers, including Googoosh, Mahasti and Hayedeh, alongside artists like Shervin Hajipour and Toomaj Salehi, who were both arrested and imprisoned after sharing music in support of the fight against the Islamic Republic’s injustices. Hajipour, who received a whopping 95,000 submissions for The Grammys’ new best song for social change award, was released following international pressure back in October.

“The Academy is deeply moved by the overwhelming volume of submissions,” said Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr in a statement. “While we cannot predict who might win the award, we are humbled by the knowledge that the Academy is a platform for people who want to show support for the idea that music is a powerful catalyst for change.”

After his October arrest, 32-year-old rapper Salehi has remained in police custody and is at risk of receiving the death penalty, according to BBC.

As a part of the playlist launch, Spotify is utilizing their playlist clips feature, which are likened to “stories” connected to a playlist, providing a platform for Iranian musicians, comedians, designers, producers and more to speak on topics like culture, art, creative process and the importance of freedom of expression. The playlist also includes diasporic Iranian artists, including Rana Mansour, Snoh Aalegra, and Iranian-Dutch singer Sevdaliza, who has released a number of songs in support of the ongoing revolution in Iran.

Stemming from the death of Mahsa Amini at the hands of Iran’s “morality police” but rooted in over 40 years of oppression, the current Iranian revolution begun in late September and has resulted in over 500 deaths officially, although some human rights groups estimate the number to be over 5,000. The number of individuals arrested spans beyond 20,000, while four known executions have taken place, with many more estimated to come.

International uproar has ensued since the start of the protests, with government officials and global stars alike speaking out on the brutal injustices taking place under the authority of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian, Samuel L. Jackson, Jason Momoa, Britney Spears and Bella Hadid are among the celebrities who have used their platforms to bring awareness to the ongoing fight, while a massive show of international solidarity led to a vote in the United Nations to remove Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women.

In Iran, kissing and hugging in public, women singing and dancing in public, among other basic acts, are illegal. Women also face discrimination in matters regarding marriage, divorce, inheritance and decisions relating to children. Members of a number of religious groups, including Baha’is are heavily persecuted in Iran, considering that Zoroastrians, Jews and Christians are the only recognized religious minorities. These human rights violations, along with income inequality and lack of freedom of expression has brought the Iranian public to their boiling point time and time again.

While there is no end in sight, the playlist’s creator Leila Kashfi emphasizes the importance of keeping the voices of Iranians alive, writing on Instagram, “For decades, the Islamic Republic has forced Iranians to suppress the beauty of Persian culture – a culture founded thousands of years ago in music, dance, romance, & tolerance. The [Islamic Republic] targets artists because music fuels revolution.”

Joshua Bassett Assures He’s ‘Better Than I Have Ever Been’ After Sparking Concern With Religious Posts

Joshua Bassett has a message for fans who are worried about his well-being: Don’t be. In a series of posts on his Instagram Story, the 22-year-old singer-songwriter addressed concerns over some of his previous tweets — in which he abruptly professed his Christian beliefs — and stated that he’s better than ever since finding peace in religion.

“For those concerned about me be sure of this: i’m better than i have ever been,” he wrote Sunday night (Jan. 29). “The peace i feel is far beyond what i thought possible.”

The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star also shared anecdotes form his spiritual journey, including one where he asked God to “send someone to touch my back” while praying at church. “Moments later, two people came up behind me saying that God put it on their heart to put their hands on me and pray,” Bassett wrote. “His love is great, and my faith is certain. praise be to God forever and ever in Jesus name.”

“I have also first hand encountered Jesus twice,” the actor added. “The experience’s [sic] were richer and more vivid than anything in my entire life… i look forward to speaking about it soon.”

Bassett’s posts come a few weeks after he startled some fans and delighted others with a religious Jan. 5 tweet that read, “Jesus Christ is the only way. His death and resurrection are historically documented. turn away form hate, seek forgiveness and come home to Him .”

The message polarized his audience, with some people leaving question marks and notes of concern in his comments section. Others praised Bassett for embracing Christianity.

A few days before that, however, the “Lie, Lie, Lie” musician had tweeted, “most people i know, including myself, are struggling right now.”

“Please be good to yourselves and others, reach out to support those you love, and dont be afraid to ask for help,” he’d noted in the tweet posted on Christmas Eve.

Billboard has reached out to Bassett’s rep for comment.

The young star has certainly had a turbulent past couple of years. In January 2021, he became the target of online harassment after his HMTMTS costar and rumored ex-girlfriend Olivia Rodrigo released her heartbreaking hit single “Drivers License,” which painted an ex in a not-so-positive light. That same month, he was hospitalized after experiencing septic shock and heart failure.

In a pair of GQ interviews, Bassett also opened up about coming to terms with his sexuality, going to therapy and healing from incidents of sexual abuse he experienced in his childhood.

“I just hope that this generation can feel comfortable, confident, and safe talking about sexuality without needing to be a box and without needing to have it all figured out,” he told the publication in June 2021. “I didn’t necessarily have that when I was younger … I’m growing so much. The year that I’ve had has been earth-shattering. I’m still landing on my feet.”

Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Oprah Winfrey Are All Smiles in Selfies Together

Kim Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez and more famous faces got together over the weekend to celebrate makeup mogul Anastasia Soare.

On Monday (Jan. 30), the SKIMS mogul posted selfies and more photos with the talk-show legend and former Super Bowl halftime performer from the bash, which marked the 25th anniversary of Soare’s massively popular makeup brand Anastasia Beverly Hills Cosmetics.

“Celebrating @anastasiasoare’s 25 year anniversary of her brand @anastasiabeverlyhills,” Kardashian captioned the carousel of pics. “The women who have been on this journey with you coming together to celebrate you was magical! You are the epitome of the American Dream and I couldn’t be more proud of you. I look up to you, you give the best advice and hearing everyone’s kind words about you just reminded me what I already knew.”

Amusingly, one fan commented, “Why does this look more like it was a party for Oprah” on Kardashian’s post, and they wouldn’t be wrong, considering the media personality happened to ring in her birthday on Sunday (Jan. 29).

According to another photo from Kardashian’s slideshow, the party was a veritable who’s who of women in Hollywood, with everyone from Cindy Crawford, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara and Kris Jenner to Jessica Alba, Rita Wilson, Maria Menounos and Ashley Tisdale also in attendance.

Lopez also shared the selfies and other snaps on her Instagram account. “Lovely dinner last night celebrating Anastasia’s 25th anniversary,” she captioned her carousel.

Soare’s get-together also coincided with the release of J. Lo’s latest rom-com, Shotgun Wedding, which is now streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. Earlier this month, the multihyphenate revealed that she was originally meant to participate in Madonna and Britney’s infamous kiss at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, but was replaced with Christina Aguilera as she was filming a movie at the time and couldn’t get away from set.

Madonna Celebrates Her Upcoming Tour With FKA Twigs, Kim Petras, Paris Hilton & More: See the Clip

Madonna‘s upcoming world tour is already poised to be quite the celebration. Now, all she needs are some people to celebrate with.

In a new video posted on her Twitter Sunday (Jan. 29), Madonna gets some help commemorating her career-spanning Celebration Tour from a host of special guests. Asking at the video’s start “I really want to know if you guys are excited that I’m going on tour,” the singer cedes the screen to a series of artists — including FKA Twigs, Kim Petras, Paris Hilton, Honey Dijon, Quavo, Ab-Soul, Bob the Drag Queen, Arca, Tokischa, Jozzy, Teezo Touchdown, Evan Mock and Jozzy — all offering emphatic yeses.

For at least one of those stars, the excitement is about more than just the prospect of seeing a new Madonna show. Bob the Drag Queen, the winner of season eight of RuPaul’s Drag Race, is set to appear as a special guest on the circuit. Celebrating the announcement two weeks back, the drag star tweeted a photo of herself dressed in a Madonna-inspired outfit on Drag Race next to a photo of the pair hanging out. “We’ve come a long way,” the queen wrote.

The tour has already sold out in multiple major cities, leading to Madonna adding 13 new dates to accommodate the demand from fans. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the icon took a moment to relish her recent achievements. “I’m about to create another show, and I’ve been working for several years on the screenplay about my life,” she said. “This is a good time for me — I’m gathering ideas, getting inspired, hanging out with creative people, watching films, seeing art, listening to music.”

While that screenplay was in the process of being transformed into a biopic of the singer’s life, Madonna’s representatives recently revealed that the production was officially being put on hold so that the singer could focus on her world tour.

NLE Choppa Leads Peaceful Protest in Memphis Honoring Tyre Nichols

Memphis continues to mourn the death of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols, who was brutally attacked and killed by five Black police officers after a Jan. 7 traffic stop. On Saturday (Jan. 28), rapper NLE Choppa took matters into his own hands when he led a peaceful protest to honor Nichols.

“Today, I felt it on my heart to turn a negative situation to a positive. I actually went to sleep dwelling on how I could wake up today and do that,” he said in a video posted to social media “I just want to skate for Tyre in respect to him and know that’s how he would have wanted everybody to act.”

The Memphis rapper began the protest at 4687 Cottonwood Road alongside adults and children with his skateboard. “No justice, no peace, we gon’ skate for Tyre,” he chanted. He later thanked his supporters for joining the protest and expressed gratitude for everyone’s involvement. “I know it’s hard for us to all come together, and it’s kinda sad it takes something tragic for us to do this,” he told the group. “But I’m grateful for it for everybody to be together, so I just want to thank y’all for being a part of this.”

Bodycam and surveillance footage of Nichols’ altercation with police was released on Jan. 27, and prompted responses from many celebrities. “My heart is crushed. I couldn’t watch the full video because it hurt so much to see something like that. I pray for those with hate in their hearts. I pray for the lost souls of people. There is no need to take anyone’s life. Rest In Peace Tyre. #JusticeForTyre,” said Ciara.

Former President Barack Obama shared similar sentiments on Instagram. “The vicious, unjustified beating of Tyre Nichols and his ultimate death at the hands of five Memphis police officers is just the latest, painful reminder of how far America still has to go in fixing how we police our streets,” he wrote. “Along with mourning Tyre and supporting his family, it’s up to all of us to mobilize for lasting change.”

Nichols’ injuries led to his hospitalization and death. Footage of the incident also showed him screaming out for his mother, crying, “I’m just trying to get home.” The five police officers have since been fired and charged with murder.

Just three months after dropping her fifth studio album, Takin’ It Back, Trainor stopped by the TODAY show Monday (Jan. 30) morning to share her exceptionally well-timed joint announcements. First, Dear Future Mamas‘ due date is April 25 this year, and second, her baby on the way is expected to arrive this summer.

“What a blessing,” the “Made You Look” singer also told People of her pregnancy news. “I’m just so grateful I can get pregnant. And I’m like, ‘I’m crushing it. This is amazing. This is my dreams.’ I’m halfway there — I want four kids!”

She also shared the baby announcement on Instagram with a photo of her sonogram. “BABY #2 COMING THIS SUMMER,” the singer captioned a snap of herself holding up the series of images.

Trainor, who’s four months pregnant, and Sabara first became parents in February 2021, when they welcomed their son, Riley. The “All About That Bass” musician’s experiences being pregnant with and giving birth to Riley will serve as the focus of Dear Future Mamas, which will also include “TMI real talk” about body image, the newborn days and insights from the artist’s own personal trainer, registered dietitian, husband and ob-gyn, according to a release.

“After feeling so overwhelmed and alone in my first pregnancy, I was inspired to write this book to make sure no other future mama ever felt like that,” Trainor said in a statement. “I want to give future mamas permission to find the right path for them — without the judgment of others. I want this book to feel like a hug from a bestie.”
