Depeche Mode Becomes Second Act With Entries in Every Decade of Alternative Airplay Chart

Depeche Mode becomes one of just two acts to appear on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart in each decade of the list’s existence thanks to “Ghosts Again,” which debuts at No. 27 on the Feb. 25-dated survey.

The song is the act’s 21st appearance on Alternative Airplay, which began in 1988, and first since “Where’s the Revolution,” which hit No. 40 in 2017.

Depeche Mode has made at least one appearance on Alternative Airplay in the 1980s, ‘90s, 2000s, ‘10s and now the ‘20s, making it the second act to do so, following Red Hot Chili Peppers, which accomplished the feat last year.

The No. 27 entrance of “Ghosts” gives Depeche Mode its best-charting Alternative Airplay hit since “Soothe My Soul” reached No. 27 in 2013, as well as the band’s top debut since “Wrong” started at No. 27 in 2009.

Among its 21 entries, Depeche Mode boasts four No. 1s: 1990’s “Enjoy the Silence” and “Policy of Truth,” and 1993’s “I Feel You” and “Walking in My Shoes.”

Concurrently, “Ghosts” opens at No. 30 on Adult Alternative Airplay, where it’s Depeche Mode’s first song to chart since “Wrong” reached No. 15 in 2009.

On the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, “Ghosts” bows at No. 24 with 1.5 million audience impressions, according to Luminate. It’s the band’s best rank on the survey, which began in 2009.

“Ghosts” is the first single from Depeche Mode’s 15th studio album, Memento Mori, due March 24.

Keri Russell Reflects on ‘Mickey Mouse Club’ Days With Britney Spears & Justin Timberlake: ‘They Were Wildly Talented’

Keri Russell stopped by The Kelly Clarkson Show on Thursday (Feb. 23) to look back on her time on The All New Mickey Mouse Club.

After revealing that the actress learned how to drive while living in Florida and filming the Disney variety show — which aired from 1989 to 1994 — Clarkson jumped in to clarify that Russell, in fact, starred on the series alongside the likes of Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Ryan Gosling.

“That’s a lot of massively talented people all in one place,” the host marveled, to which The Americans star gamely replied, “They were all very talented. Like, Christina and Britney and Ryan Gosling and Justin, all those kids were 12 when I was 17. So I was a little older. I mean, I could drive, I was cool. But they were wildly talented.”

Of course, half a decade after she left The All New Mickey Mouse Club in 1993, Russell went on to land her breakout role as the titular protagonist on Felicity. And just months after the college drama premiered on The WB, Spears released her now-classic debut album …Baby One More Time in January 1999 followed by Aguilera’s self-titled debut the next August.

Meanwhile, Timberlake and fellow Mickey Mouse Club alum JC Chasez formed *NSYNC with their bandmates in 1995 and released their smash debut studio effort two years later, spawning hits such as “I Want U Back,” “Tearin’ Up My Heart” and “(God Must Have Spent) A Little More Time On You.”

Watch Russell reminisce over her Disney days with Clarkson below.

While Gomez is the most-followed woman on the platform, soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo is the most-followed person in general with 551 million followers. Another soccer superstar, Lionel Messi, follows with 432 million.

Gomez’s most recent post is a sultry snap posted on Wednesday (Feb. 22), in which the star is seen sipping on a cocktail at a restaurant. “I deleted this one time because I thought maybe it was too much but eh,” she captioned the photo.

The Only Murders in the Building actress returned to personally posting on her Instagram page in January, more than four years after she deleted the app from her phone and gave posting rights to a a member of her team due to her unhealthy relationship with the platform. “At one point Instagram became my whole world, and it was really dangerous. In my early 20s, I felt like I wasn’t pretty enough. There was a whole period in my life when I thought I needed makeup and never wanted to be seen without it,” she previously told InStyle.

She added, “Taking a break from social media was the best decision that I’ve ever made for my mental health. I created a system where I still don’t have my passwords. And the unnecessary hate and comparisons went away once I put my phone down. I’ll have moments where that weird feeling will come back, but now I have a much better relationship with myself.”

Cordae Talks Friendship With Anderson .Paak & His New PUMA Collaboration

Cordae’s 2023 is off to a superb start as the DMV upstart has already released new music and as of Thursday (Feb. 23), launched a new clothing collaboration with PUMA. In a recent interview with Billboard before his debut at the 2023 Ruffles NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, Cordae shared insight about the PUMA collab and his latest release, “Two Tens,” featuring Anderson .Paak. Produced by J. Cole, “Two Tens” marks the duo’s second collaboration in nearly four years after the success of their RIAA gold single “RNP.””

“We did that song like a year or two ago. That’s just my man’s in real life. That’s just my friend, and I don’t use that word loosely, especially in entertainment. That’s my man’s for real,” Cordae said about his friendship with Anderson. “We’re just always creating and making music.” When asked about J. Cole’s talents as a producer, Cordae expressed his admiration, saying, “He’s literally like a top-tier producer. He produced all his own records. He’s a legend. He produced “RNP” and made a joint for Mac Miller. He’s a cold-ass producer.”

Cordae released his first eight-piece collection with PUMA on Thursday — dubbed the PUMA X Cordae HI-LEVEL collection, fans can enjoy an array of streetwear ranging from sneakers to sweatpants to t-shirts and a jacket. Retailing from $40-$120, the apparel pieces are available for purchase now. “It’s something that’s been in the works for a while now,” says Cordae about his newly-minted collection. “I’ve partnered with PUMA since early 2019, so this is just a manifestation of a seed that’s been planted. And it made sense timing-wise for both parties.”

This collaboration is also a step in the right direction for the burgeoning entrepreneur as he hopes to fortify his HI-LEVEL imprint. “The next move for HI-LEVEL is to obviously sign some artists,” he relays. “We have a couple in the developmental stage, but they are still blossoming. So that’s the next immediate step. In the long term, we’re doing a bunch of dope partnerships, community outreach, and just planting seeds in different areas and avenues. From music to tech, to fashion, to real estate. But obviously, above all comes the music. So that’s what we’re focusing on. That’s the engine that drives all and makes everything else possible.”

Cordae will embark on a 28-city tour with Lil Wayne called Welcome to Tha Carter this spring after their successful collaboration on “Sinister,” featured on Cordae’s 2022 album From A Bird’s Eye View.

P!nk Says She’s ‘Always Felt Like a Big Sister’ to Britney Spears: ‘I’m Very Protective of Her’

P!nk opened up about her decades-long connection with Britney Spears in a new interview on Wednesday (Feb. 22).

Speaking to People as the magazine’s latest cover star, the “So What” singer dispelled any notion of bad blood between herself and her fellow pop star. “People think I was picking on Britney on ‘Don’t Let Me Get Me,’ but I’ve always felt like a big sister to her,” she said. (Memorably, P!nk sang, “Tired of being compared to/ Damn Britney Spears/ She’s so pretty/ That just ain’t me” on the self-loathing second single off her 2001 album Misundaztood.)

“I’m very protective of her, and she’s the sweetest person in the world,” P!nk continued, though later added she’s not currently in touch with the Princess of Pop. “I wish her well. I cover her in light all day long.”

Famously, the two teamed up with Beyoncé for Pepsi’s 2004 Super Bowl commercial, during which they appeared as gladiators ready to lead a caffeinated uprising against Roman emperor Enrique Iglesias set to a cover of Queen’s “We Will Rock You.”

“What a weird deal that was. What the hell? Like, ‘What are we doing?’” P!nk reflected during the interview about the iconic ad. “Also, you’re Pepsi. You’re flying us to Rome to shoot in a fake coliseum down the street from the real Coliseum. Why are we here? We could have gone to Canada. I don’t understand. That’s Pepsi money. For a while, everything I saw that was really fancy, I was like, ‘That’s Pepsi money.’ It was bizarre.”

Earlier this month, P!nk released her ninth studio album, TRUSTFALL, via RCA Records and revealed her plans for a fall arena tour in support of the LP. Read her full People cover story here.

Afrobeats Fresh Picks of the Month: Pheelz, Asake, BNXN & More

To kick off 2023, Billboard launched a new, monthly Afrobeats column to keep you up to speed with the fast-rising stars coming out of the African continent and soaring across the globe. Burna Boy, Tems and Rema performing at the 2023 NBA All-Star Game halftime show in Salt Lake City, Utah this past weekend is proof that African artists will only continue to expand beyond their borders and push beyond Afrobeats’ traditional boundaries — incorporating hip-hop, amapiano, R&B, jazz, soul and just about everything else into a melting pot that, for lack of a better overarching term, we’ll still refer to as Afrobeats.

We’ve highlighted 10 of our favorite new Afrobeats (and related) songs that’ve come out within the last month. Love’s certainly in the air this season, from Pheelz’s feel-good, romantic jam “Pheelz Like Summer” to Khaid’s sweet ode “Jolie,” and decisions on what to include or not have been particularly tough — Rema, for example, just dropped two new tracks, though neither made the list here. Check out our Fresh Picks, and don’t forget to tap into our Spotify playlist below so you can catch a vibe with us.

Tyla, “Been Thinking”

Epic’s latest signee Tyla clearly has love on the brain, as evidenced by her latest single “Been Thinking.” The 21-year-old singer’s otherworldly pop and R&B sensibilities blend with her native South African amapiano in this slinky earworm that’ll have you wishing you were grinding on the love of your life in the middle of the dance floor before going home with them. “I’m just praying that [African music] keeps going the way it’s going. I feel like all eyes are on us right now,” Tyla told Billboard earlier at the Recording Academy Honors Black Music Collective event. “It’s a huge opportunity for us to now take it and run with it. We’ve been wanting this for a long time, so it’s about time.”

Pheelz, “Pheelz Like Summer”

Fresh off the success of his single “Finesse,” Pheelz delivers his Warner Records debut EP Pheelz Good, which is precisely how it makes you pheel. On the highlight track “Pheelz Like Summer,” the award-winning Nigerian producer-turned-singer gushes over a girl whose radiant smile makes him feel so warm inside that it reminds him of summer – even if it’s still only February. The sensual sax intro and buoyant beats evoke the warmer season, while Pheelz ushers in a season of love every time he coos, “Ooh-ooh-ooh/ Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh.”

Stonebwoy, “More Of You”

Def Jam’s latest signee Stonebwoy begs his girl to give him “More of You” in his sultry latest single. The Ghanaian Afropop/reggae artist clearly can’t get enough of her, pleading with her to dance with him to a spellbinding rhythm – courtesy of Grammy-nominated producer Supa Dups – that we can’t get enough of. Ultimately, Stonebwoy becomes so mesmerized by her beauty in the animated visual that he succumbs to her like the Biblical forbidden fruit and ends up naked in a garden like Eden.

Tayc, “Success”

The Cameroonian-French crooner makes listeners swoon with dreamy scenarios and explicit rendezvous details that just roll off the tip of his French mother tongue with his latest album, ROOM 96. On the highlight “Success,” Tayc reflects on a woman who can’t handle his success and its side effects (like extra eyes on her), continuing to assuage her with sweet nothings that’ll make anyone’s ears tingle. Yet the ultra-sexy production of “Success” glosses over Tayc’s biting outro: “You’re just not ready for this, you should let me know/ ‘Cause, um, basically my life ain’t gonna change for you/ I, I love my life/ I love my place and I’m not gonna move anything for anybody.”

Michaël Brun feat. Oxlade, “Clueless”

Haitian DJ/producer Michaël Brun teams up with the “KU LO SA” Nigerian singer on the infectious Carribbean-Afro-fusion collaboration “Clueless.” Oxlade delivers a chant-worthy chorus with his enunciation of the track’s title, while he toys with the idea of loving a girl who’s equally his “antidote and poison” over Brun’s laidback beats. “Working with Oxlade was such an honor,” Brun says in a press release. “The operatic elements of his voice and the ways in which he uses harmonies and layers are what make Oxlade who he is — a true legend.”

Asake, “Yoga”

Asake has been on a heater for almost a year now, peaking with his debut album Mr. Money With the Vibe last September — and he hasn’t slowed down his output since, with “Yoga” his latest single to make waves. There’s a comfortable, soothing vibe to the track that comes across in his vocals and belies the lyrics, which stress the need to protect against things that will disrupt your peace — and the hook is a balm to alleviate such stresses. “Yoga” is the calm in the midst of a firestorm, a perfect song for imperfect times.

Khaid, “Jolie”

More than a simple love song, “Jolie” has melodies that pile on top of each other to get stuck in the mind and get stronger as the track goes on. Relatively new to the game — his first project of any kind was a six-song EP from last year, titled DIVERSITY — Khaid is still a teenager, and still developing as an artist, but “Jolie” shows there’s a lot of promise and talent that’s already there, with a world of possibility ahead of him.

Spinall feat. BNXN & Stefflon Don, “Oshey”

First things first — this DJ Spinall album has been spinning out phenomenal singles for about a year now, including his collaborations with Adekunle Gold (“Cloud 9”) and Asake (“Palazzo”), both of which initially came out last year. Now that the full project, titled Top Boy, was released Feb. 17, there’s more to dig into, with this collaboration with BNXN and Stefflon Don a particular highlight, showcasing all the different styles that weld together this diverse and compelling project. (But seriously, listen to “Cloud 9” and thank us later.)

BNXN, Kizz Daniel & Seyi Vibez, “GWAGWALADA”

A reference to an area of Nigeria, “GWAGWALADA” brings together three of the most intriguing Afrobeats artists from the country in BNXN, Kizz Daniel and Seyi Vibez, each bringing their distinctive vocals and styles to mesh seamlessly over the laid back, feel-good production by Sarz. BNXN has thrived in the last few years via collaborations with the likes of Wizkid, Burna Boy and Pheelz, and “GWAGWALADA” adds another flawless team-up to his growing discography.

Young Jonn feat. Olamide, “Currency”

Young Jonn has stepped beyond his producer title and has been dropping a series of infectious singles of late; “Xtra Cool,” released last October, probably should have been in this column last month, but “Currency” is another worthy entry. Longtime collaborator Olamide comes through to switch up the vibe, but it’s all additive, making this another insistent earworm of a record.

Nicki Minaj Announces New Single ‘Red Ruby Da Sleeze,’ Unveils Sizzling Cover Art

Make way for the Queen of Rap. Nicki Minaj is returning with her first solo single of 2023, a track called “Red Ruby Da Sleeze” coming March 3.

The rapper announced the track Thursday (Feb. 23) with behind-the-scenes clips from a music video shoot, afterward posting the single’s official artwork on Instagram. In the photo, she poses next to a chef hard at work in a restaurant kitchen, staring down the camera as she stirs a frying pan. As usual, Minaj is the most colorful thing in the room, wearing a brightly patterned vintage Jean Paul Gaultier dress, yellow heels and split-dyed hair, half red and half pink.

In the behind-the-scenes clips for the “Red Ruby Da Sleeze” music video, the Queen Radio host raps along to her unreleased lyrics as a darkly-lit dance party unfolds behind her. Minaj later revealed the video was filmed in her home island of Trinidad and Tobago, where she’s been spending time this week amid the island’s 2023 Carnival.

“Hunnit rounds on dat gratata,” she raps as women twerk on each side of her.

The new track is bound to be Minaj’s first solo release since last summer’s “Super Freaky Girl,” a reimagined version of Rick James “Super Freak” that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the “Super Bass” artist’s first ever solo song to top the chart, and the first No. 1 debut for a hip-hop song by a female artist with no accompanying acts since Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in 1998.

“You did it barbz,” Minaj thanked fans on social media after the track went No. 1. “You did it. I love you so much. like so so SO much. Thank you.”

Watch Ariana DeBose Excitedly Practice 2023 BAFTAs Rap Backstage

Ariana DeBose did her homework before taking the stage to open the 2023 BAFTA Awards on Sunday night. The Oscar-winning singer/actress faced an avalanche of snarky criticism and memes after she performed a bit that mixed a high-energy version of a 1985 Eurythmics/Aretha Franklin collaboration with an original rap ticking off some of the famous and nominated women in the room.

And though some commenters dinged DeBose for what they deemed clunky bars, ever the professional, Ariana definitely had the routine down before hitting the stage, as evidenced by a 35-second TikTok video shared by Broadway music director Benjamin Rauhala on Wednesday (Feb. 22).

In the clip, the actress smiled and shimmied in place as her received her final makeup touches, with the on-screen graphics reading, “We did the thing… backstage with Ariana getting ready to… do the thing… We had SO much fun celebrating the brilliant female nominees at the BAFTAs. It was an honour to give love to all these iconic women and to get the party started.”

In fact, DeBose was bristling with energy as she put some extra on certain names and lines, still at it just before going on stage as her team adjusted the tear-away sections of her voluminous magenta gown. And though DeBose has not made an official public statement about the blowback, Rauhala’s TikTok ended with a suggestion that all fair in love and memes.

“We are giggling at everyone who has our campy little number stuck in their head. Thank you for the love and hilarious memes,” read one of the final captions. “She did the thing.”

The producer of Sunday night’s show, Nick Bullen, told Variety magazine earlier this week that the pile-on was unwarranted. “We wanted to open the show with some energy, some fun, and also lay out straight away that this was hopefully going to feel like a different night, but with a familiarity as well, and what Ariana did was exactly that,” producer Bullen said the morning after the telecast. He said that DeBose and her team put the entire bit together in close consultation with the show’s musical director and choreographer and that he didn’t think she deserved the biting reaction.

The highly choreographed bit opened with DeBose singing “Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves” as a group of dancers pulled at her dress and removed long pieces of fabric. The performance then flipped into a solo rap in which DeBose did call-outs to a variety of actresses in the audience.

It was the latter bit — specifically her awkward Angela Bassett and Viola Davis shout-outs — that got the Twitterverse revved up. “Angela Bassett did the thing/ Viola Davis my ‘Woman King’/ Blanchett Cate you’re a genius/ Jamie Lee you are all of us,” rapped DeBose in a clip that quickly went viral after the show thanks to what looked like less-than-enthusiastic looks on the faces of some of the actresses she mentioned.

“I think it’s incredibly unfair, to be frank. I absolutely loved it,” Bullen told Variety of the criticism. “Everybody I’ve spoken to who was in the room absolutely loved it. She’s a huge star, she was amazing. The songs she was singing are very familiar songs, the room was clapping, and people were sort of dancing to the music. That rap section in the middle, mentioning the women in the room, was because it’s been a great year for women in film, and we wanted to celebrate that. And here is a woman of color who is at the absolute top of her game.”

DeBose deactivated her Twitter account after the online backlash.

R. Kelly Avoids Lengthy Add-On to 30-Year Prison Sentence

CHICAGO (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday handed singer R. Kelly a 20-year prison sentence for his convictions of child pornography and the enticement of minors for sex but said he will serve nearly all of the sentence simultaneously with a 30-year sentence imposed last year on racketeering charges.

U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber also ordered that Kelly serve one year in prison following his New York sentence.

The central question going into the sentencing in Kelly’s hometown of Chicago was whether Leinenweber would order that the 56-year-old serve the sentence simultaneously with or only after he completes the New York term for 2021 racketeering and sex trafficking convictions. The latter would have been tantamount to a life sentence.

Prosecutors had acknowledged that a lengthy term served only after the New York sentence could have erased any chance of Kelly ever getting out of prison alive. It’s what they asked for, arguing his crimes against children and lack of remorse justified it.

With Thursday’s sentence, though, Kelly will serve no more than 31 years. That means he will be eligible for release at around age 80, providing him some hope of one day leaving prison alive.

Leinenweber said at the outset of the hearing that he did not accept the government’s contention that Kelly used fear to woo underage girls for sex.

“The (government’s) whole theory of grooming, was sort of the opposite of fear of bodily harm,” the judge told the court. “It was the fear of lost love, lost affections (from Kelly)’. … It just doesn’t seem to me that it rises to the fear of bodily harm.”

Prosecutors say Kelly’s crimes against children and his lack of remorse justify the stiffer sentence.

A calm Kelly spoke briefly at the start of the hearing, when the judge asked him if he had reviewed key presentencing documents for any inaccuracies.

“Your honor, I have gone over it with my attorney,” Kelly said. “I’m just relying on my attorney for that.”

Two of Kelly’s accusers asked the judge to punish him harshly.

In a statement read aloud in court, a woman who testified under the pseudonym “Jane” said she had lost her early aspirations to become a singer herself and her hopes for fulfilling relationships.

“I have lost my dreams to Robert Kelly,” the statement said. “I will never get back what I lost to Robert Kelly. … “I have been permanently scarred by Robert.”

The woman was a key witness for prosecutors during Kelly’s trial; four of his convictions are tied to her.

“When your virginity is taken by a pedophile at 14 … your life is never your own,” Jane’s statement read.

Another accuser, who used the pseudonym “Nia,” attended the hearing and addressed Kelly directly in court. Speaking forcefully as her voice quivered, Nia said Kelly would repeatedly pick at her supposed faults while he abused her.

“Now you are here … because there is something wrong with you,” she said. “No longer will you be able to harm children.”

Jurors in Chicago convicted Kelly last year on six of 13 counts: three counts of producing child porn and three of enticement of minors for sex.

Kelly rose from poverty in Chicago to become one of the world’s biggest R&B stars. Known for his smash hit “I Believe I Can Fly” and for sex-infused songs such as “Bump n’ Grind,” he sold millions of albums even after allegations about his abuse of girls began circulating publicly in the 1990s.

In presentencing filings, prosecutors described Kelly as “a serial sexual predator” who used his fame and wealth to reel in, sexually abuse and then discard star-struck fans.

U.S. Assistant Attorney Jeannice Appenteng on Thursday urged the judge to set a longer sentence and keep Kelly in prison “for the rest of his life.”

Kelly’s abuse of children was all the worse, she said, because he “memorialized” his abuse by filming victims, including Jane. She told the court Kelly “used Jane as a sex prop, a thing” for producing pornographic videos.

In prehearing filings, Kelly’s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, accused prosecutors of offering an “embellished narrative” in an attempt to get the judge to join what she called the government’s “bloodthirsty campaign to make Kelly a symbol of the #MeToo movement.”

Bonjean said Kelly has suffered enough, including financially. She said his worth once approached $1 billion, but that he “is now destitute.”

In court Thursday, Bonjean said Kelly will be lucky to survive his 30-year New York sentence alone. To give him a consecutive 25-year sentence on top of that “is overkill, it is symbolic,” she said. “Why? Because it is R. Kelly.”

She also argued that Kelly’s silence should not be viewed as a lack of remorse.

She said that while she advised Kelly not to speak because he continues to appeal his convictions and could face other legal action, “He would like to, he would like to very much.”
