Lil Pump Taps Into the ‘Grand Theft Auto’ Metaverse

After dropping his EP Tesla just last week (Feb. 24), 22-year-old rapper Lil Pump is already gearing up for his next project, LP2, by tapping into the metaverse.

By way of Grand Theft Auto, the “Gucci Gang” artist created his own virtual world that encompass all facets of Lil Pump, including a strip club called “Pump Playhouse,” an underground gambling-themed game zone, mansions, and an impressive collection of cars.

“We built this server with the strategy in mind to bring Pump’s core fans and consumers into his world through the lens of gaming culture,” Rich Foster, head of digital marketing at SoundCloud, said in a statement. “We were intentional that we not only use GTA as a launchpad, but to migrate unique easter eggs throughout the experience.”

A collection of Lil Pump’s songs and videos play throughout the metaverse, including his Ty Dolla $ign-assisted “She Know.”

The Miami-born rapper has made recent headlines for his body transformation, $25,000 porcelain veneers and latest single “Tesla” alongside Smokepurpp, accumulating over a million YouTube views in three days.

“As we continue to see, dropping music alone isn’t enough anymore, it’s about creating moments around the music, all the better if those moments can engage fans and different communities,” adds Jory Carver, director of artist services at SoundCloud.

Fans who tuned in via livestream for the finale got a chance to watch it all go down at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. During the event, each of the finalists’ mentorship documents premiered, showing how contenders got a chance to meet with a special mentor –– each of whom was responsible for announcing a new challenge at some point in the competition. Julian King was paired up with Mariah Angeliq, Kyn Rose spoke with BIBI, and Nyla XO flew out to see Flo Milli.

All throughout the competition, the contestants have relied on their Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4, Galaxy Buds2 Pro, and their Galaxy Watch5 to help them complete their challenges, and meeting up with their mentors proved no exception.

Scroll on to check out some highlights from each of the finalists’ mentor sessions.

Nyla XO x Flo Milli

Before flying to Atlanta to meet up with rapper Flo Milli, Nyla XO expressed her concerns about performing as a solo artist, saying, “I’ve performed on some stages, but it’s been in the background playing keys or background vocals, so I think there’s a different element of pressure and also responsibility as an artist to what you are going to give the people.”

But Flo Milli –– who studied her mentee’s video before the two met –– assured Nyla she had nothing to worry about.

“I can already tell, you are a GOAT,” she said. “You’re about to go on the stage and do what you need to do.”

After taking some selfies together with Nyla’s Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4, Flo Milli also told Nyla to never let anyone make her feel small, no matter where she is in her career: “You’re gonna have some cities that don’t know who you are. It’s all about not letting that affect you and keeping the same energy you started with. Never let them see whatever you’re thinking. Don’t let nobody make you feel inferior.”

Congratulations again to Samsung NXT 2.0 winner, Nyla XO, who is going to land on the cover of a special digital issue of Billboard, a meeting with a record label, funding for a music video, and tickets to the 2023 Billboard Music Awards.

Julian King x Mariah Angeliq

Julian King flew down to Miami to get some one-on-one coaching from his mentor, reggaeton star Mariah Angeliq. But before meeting up with her, the Philadelphia-based artist reflected on his journey thus far and the impact he’s made on others.

“I know that me being me has been an inspiration to other people, especially within my communities,” he said. “And now I carry that with pride.”

After shooting a quick video on his Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4, Julian met up with his mentor, and the two hit it off, taking selfies poolside and speaking openly about the upcoming finale.

Angeliq advised the finalist to surround himself with support. “As long as you have the right energy around you, you’re always gonna feel good, and having that support is everything,” she said. “You need to be around those people that make you believe in yourself.”

“Just be you,” she told him. “The rest will fall into place.”

Kyn Rose x BIBI

Before jumping on a video call using his Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 with Kpop star BIBI, Kyn Rose opened up about the finale, and what he hopes to convey to those watching: “Samsung NXT 2.0 is such a huge opportunity that I mainly just want to send everyone home with the thought of, ‘That Kyn Rose dude is something else, and I’m really interested.’ It’s just a bunch of people in a room that I just want to capture and have a moment with, is really the big thing in my head.”

Moments later, BIBI expressed a similar feeling, telling Kyn she always wants fans to walk away from her performances still buzzing, well into the next morning: “I just go up there and I want to entertain everybody. I want them to wake up happily tomorrow and go to work and just talk about, ‘Oh yeah, I went to her concert. I went to the performance, it was fun, I had a lot of fun, I just want to listen to that.’ That’s my goal.”

BIBI also advised Kyn to give the grand finale performance his all, saying, “If you don’t rock the stage right now, you might have no chance anymore. I always have that in my mind.”

Travis Barker Getting Surgery on Broken Ring Finger Ahead of Blink-182 Tour

After injuring his ring finger two times this month, Travis Barker revealed Monday (Feb. 27) on Instagram that he’s getting surgery.

“Surgery tomorrow,” Barker captioned an Instagram carousel of his injury, with the fingers-crossed emoji.

The first video in the carousel shows a medical professional trying to get the joint back in place. The next three photos show his swollen knuckle and a brace holding the ring finger in place.

Barker first injured the finger on Feb. 7 during rehearsals for Blink-182‘s upcoming reunion tour. “I was playing the drums at rehearsals yesterday and I smashed my finger so hard I dislocated it and tore the ligaments,” Barker tweeted on Feb. 8. Then, on Feb. 20, Barker shared an Instagram Story in which he showed off his swollen, bruised knuckle, captioning the image “again.”

Blink-182’s world tour — the first with reunited co-frontman Tom DeLonge back in the picture since 2014 — is set to kick off March 11 in Tijuana, Mexico. There’s no word yet how long Barker’s surgery recovery will take, but given how public the drummer has been with his injury journey, he’ll likely keep fans posted.

Mark Hoppus, Barker and DeLonge announced back in October that they were reuniting the band’s classic lineup for the 2023-24 world tour and the new single “Edging,” which was released late last year. On Christmas Eve, DeLonge teased that the trio were working on “the best album we’ve ever made.”

“I’m personally tripping and so proud of what we have created TOGETHER,” he wrote on Instagram. “As one unified force of fun, eternal youth, and most of all- close friends.”

In a recent interview with GQ magazine, Usher shared what he enjoys about the residency. “I like the idea of what I’ve found in Las Vegas,” explained the father of four. “It gives me an opportunity to settle. I have children now. I got a life, so [I like] being able to have a few days in certain places and being able to celebrate those places and enjoy them. At this age, you try to hold on to the moments.”

On the heels of teasing his return to Las Vegas, Usher debuted in a new campaign for Uber Reserve on Monday (Feb. 27). From photoshoots and interviews to being a dad, the video campaign takes fans through a chaotic day in the life of Usher and shows how Uber Reserve helps him get to destinations on time.

Usher is the latest singer to appear in an Uber commercial after Diddy’s Super Bowl commercial for Uber One featuring Kelis and Montell Jordan. The service includes discounted Uber rides and discounts on Uber Eats deliveries.

Shawn Mendes & Sabrina Carpenter Photos Start a Twitter Frenzy: ‘If They Are Dating, The Internet Will Be Broken’

New photos of Shawn Mendes and Sabrina Carpenter walking together in Los Angeles had fans of both pop stars buzzing Monday (Feb. 27) on Twitter.

The pics are completely casual — with the pair walking down the street side-by-side, Mendes’ hands tucked into the pockets of his jean jacket and Carpenter wearing an oversize black sweatsuit — but they follow rumors from gossip Instagram account deuxmoi that they’ve been quietly dating.

As some tweets have pointed out, Mendes and Carpenter have known each other and crossed paths in the industry for years, but the timing of the photos following the deuxmoi rumors and with both stars reportedly single after high-profile relationships, fans are having a field day.

“If they are dating the Internet will be broken,” one fan tweeted alongside a series of mind-blown emojis. “WAKE UP ITS CONFIRMED,” another account tweeted in all-caps, referencing the rumors.

Mendes previously dated Camila Cabello for two-plus years before they announced their breakup in late 2021. “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” read a joint statement on their Instagram Stories signed “Camila and Shawn.” “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”

Carpenter was previously linked to High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star Joshua Bassett. Dating speculation reached a fever pitch due to Olivia Rodrigo’s breakout hit “Drivers License” in early 2021 allegedly addressing Carpenter and Bassett’s relationship.

During the showdown, fans were treated to two rounds from the contestants: the Covers Round and Original Song Round. For the batch of performances, the trio nodded to their challenge creatives by putting their own spin on three Billboard Hot 100 hits: “Golden Hour” by JVKE (Nyla), “Kill Bill” by SZA (King) and “Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy (Rose). Each performance was preceded by the premiere of an intimate mentorship documentary that the contestants filmed with their celebrity mentor: Flo Milli (Nyla), Mariah Angeliq (King) and BIBI (Rose). After a cumulative vote from the judges, in-theater attendees using the Samsung Galazy Z Flip 4 at voting stations and a Twitter poll, Kyn was eliminated from the competition. From there, Nyla and King brought their best as individual acts, performing two original songs, “Perfect View” and “Can We Go Back?” respectively.

To help crown the winner, inaugural Samsung NXT champ Bronze Avery returned to the stage to help our host and the judges crown the NXT 2.0 winner. Using the same voting mechanism, Kelly pulled out Samsung’s newest Galaxy S23 Ultra to reveal Nyla as the victorious champ of the competition. And it wouldn’t be a grand finale event, without a celebratory selfie at the end of the end of the show.

“I feel so seen in this moment,”  Nyla said in a statement about her win. “I’ve walked away with the validation that people see me, the hard work I’ve put in over the years, my heart when I perform, and how my music makes them feel. To be recognized in this way as an artist is incredible!

Congratulations to Samsung NXT 2.0 winner Nyla XO, who is going to land on the cover of a special digital issue of Billboard, a meeting with a record label, funding for a music video, and tickets to the 2023 Billboard Music Awards.
