NBC News Chronicles ’50 Years Fly: The Rise, Fall and Revolution of Hip-Hop Fashion’: Watch the Trailer

Coinciding with the double celebration of Black Music Month and hip-hop’s 50^th anniversary, the upcoming digital documentary from NBC News will premiere June 15.

Among the additional fashion industry executives, designers and experts featured in the documentary are Walker Wear CEO April Walker, The Cut editor-in-chief Lindsay Peoples, DTLR vp and divisional merchandise manager of apparel Antonio Gray, author Vikki Tobak (Contact High: A Visual History of Hip-Hop; Ice Cold: A Hip-Hop Jewelry History) and Tommy Hilfiger founder Tommy Hilfiger.

50 Years Fly: The Rise, Fall and Revolution of Hip-Hop Fashion debuts June 15 on NBC’s Peacock and will stream on NBC News NOW at 10:30 p.m. ET. NBC News Digital Docs, whose team includes executive producer Rachael Morehouse, has produced previous documentaries such as A Marriage on Trial: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, and the Truth in the Age of Social Media, Dear Noah: Pages from a Family Diary, #FillerNation and Boiling Point: A City’s Fight for Clean Water.

The 1975’s Matty Healy Opens For His Own Band, Responds to Noel Gallagher Diss With Even Spicier Shot

Matty Healy can do it all. In the span of one show in Dublin on Wednesday night (June 7) at St. Anne’s Park, the lead singer of The 1975 managed to play two sets in the same night, take a wild swing at a musical hero while also expressing his love for him and he capped it off with a subtle humble brag about nice gifts he got from two of the world’s biggest rock stars.

Let’s start with the diss, though. As you might recall, while promoting his band’s new album, Council Skies recently, High Flying Birds leader and former Oasis co-founder Noel Gallagher was asked about Healy’s comments earlier this year begging for a Gallagher brothers reunion. As with all talk of an Oasis rapprochement, this angered Noel, who referred to Matty as a “f–king slack-jawed f–kwit.”

So, after opening for his own band with a solo “Matty” set after Caroline Polachek unexpectedly pulled out of the Dublin show due to reported vocal issues with a set of stripped-down 1975 songs and a cover of former Men At Work singer Colin Hay’s “I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You,” Healy got to work.

Matty addressed the crowd by casually noting that he recently got some very nice gifts from U2 singer Bono and Coldplay’s Chris Martin. “Today — honestly, this is not a namedrop, this is a celebration of them as people — Chris Martin and Bono have sent us the most beautiful messages, packages, kind of good wishes,” he said, without explaining why his fellow frontmen had reached out. “In honestly such a genuine way and it made us feel so beautiful.”

The singer — who reportedly recently split with short-term girlfriend Taylor Swift after a brief dalliance — then turned his attention to the Gallaghers and gave the battling brothers a taste of their own acid-drenched medicine. “Noel Gallagher called me a ‘slack-jawed f–kwit’… I love Noel Gallagher,” Healy said, before he began turning the knife and dragging former Oasis singer Liam Gallagher into the muck as we;;. “We asked Liam to open up and he said he would have done it but he was busy.”

And then it got real.

“But I love Noel Gallagher… He’s just getting on,” Healy snarked. “The difference between me and Noel is that I do a series of interviews to promote an album, whereas he does an album to promote a series of interviews.”

And in the final twist of the knife, Healy tripled down on his call for a long-desired Oasis reunion, adding, “But we love you, Noel. Get Oasis back together!”

Chris Stapleton’s Outdoor New York Concert Canceled Due to Canadian Wildfire Smoke

Chris Stapleton has canceled his scheduled outdoor concert in Syracuse, New York, due to ongoing air-quality issues caused by smoke from Canadian wildfires. The upstate cancellation follows a series of called-off events throughout New York City on Wednesday night (June 7), including Broadway performances and sports games.

“Due to the ongoing air conditions in the greater Syracuse area, tomorrow night’s show at @StJosephsAmp will be rescheduled,” Stapleton’s Twitter account posted late Wednesday about his St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview show scheduled for Thursday night. “All previously purchased tickets for the original date will be honored for the new date. We expect to have an update by mid-day June 9th.”

In NYC, Broadway’s Hamilton called off its Wednesday show, as did the Camelot revival on Broadway. “The hazardous air quality in New York City has made it impossible for a number of our artists to perform this evening,” the Hamilton account tweeted. “Shows will resume as scheduled tomorrow.” New York’s Public Theater canceled the first two Hamlet performances set to kick off its Shakespeare in the Park series on Thursday and Friday.

Wednesday’s New York Yankees game vs. the Chicago White Sox was also canceled, along with the WNBA game between the New York Liberty and the Minnesota Lynx.

According to IQAir.com on Wednesday, New York City currently has the worst air quality in the world due to more than 400 wildfires burning across Canada and smoke blanketing much of the eastern U.S. The National Weather Service reports that “hazardous air quality levels will persist across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic through Thursday before shifting westward into Ohio Valley on Friday.”

What’s Your Favorite Prince Hot 100 No. 1 Hit? Vote!

Happy birthday, Prince! Today (June 7) would have been the late icon’s 64th birthday.

In honor of the superstar, we’re looking back on some of his biggest hits. Over the course of his illustrious career, Prince had an impressive 47 hits on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. Of those 47, he had 19 top 10 hits and five chart toppers.

Among his No. 1 classic’s include his first, “When Doves Cry,” which led the tally for five weeks in 1984. He also reached the summit with 1984’s “Let’s Go Crazy,” 1986’s “Kiss,” 1989’s “Batdance (From Batman)” and 1991’s “Cream.”

Summer Songs 1958-2022: The Top 10 Tunes of Each Summer

Time-travel through every year since the Hot 100 began with the top 10 hits each summer.

Hot weather and nostalgia make for a potent mix(tape). In order to aid your festive flashbacks, we analyzed the Billboard Hot 100 chart each year dating back to the survey’s August 1958 launch. Here’s the definitive list of the top 10 jams each summer that pumped out of your speakers most between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Beginning with the survey’s inception, summer songs have made for some of the most memorable hits in the Hot 100’s history, while many prominent artists have scored the top song of the summer, including Stevie Wonder, the Supremes and the Rolling Stones in the ‘60s; Bee Gees, Eagles and Donna Summer (naturally) in the ‘70s; Prince and Madonna in the ‘80s; Mariah Carey and TLC in the ‘90s; Usher and Beyoncé in the 2000s; and Katy Perry, Drake and more since.

Meanwhile, the right song at the right time has connected, regardless of the scope of an artist’s history. OMI, for example, has charted one Hot 100 hit, but it was a big one: his sunny “Cheerleader” soundtracked the summer of 2015 and wrapped as that season’s biggest hit.

Time-travel below through every year since the Hot 100 began with the top 10 hits each summer.

These hot tunes are ranked based on each track’s performance on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the summer. For the period through 1991, prior to the advent of Luminate radio monitoring and point-of-sales data, the rankings are based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at lower ranks earning less. For the years corresponding with Luminate data tabulation from 1992 onward, rankings are based on accumulated radio and sales points, and points from other data sets, including streaming, included in the Hot 100 during those years.

Blueface has been arrested in Las Vegas, Clark County Detention Center records showed on Wednesday (June 7).

According to records, the rapper born Johnathan Jamall Porter faces a felony robbery charge, though no specific details about what led to the arrest have been provided. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, Blueface was allegedly taken into custody while entering the Regional Justice Center. Billboard has reached out to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for more information.

His initial court appearance is set for 9 a.m. on Thursday (June 8).

Blueface was arrested in Vegas again less than a year ago, in November 2022, after the 26-year-old rapper had attempted murder with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm at/into an occupied structure warrants out for his arrest following a shooting that took place Oct. 8, according to a statement from Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Based in Los Angeles, Blueface had a commercial breakout in 2018 with “Thotiana,” which peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Thotiana” remains his only top 40 entry, and is one of three appearances on the chart, including “Daddy,” with Rich The Kid (peaking at No. 78); and “Slide,” with French Montana and Lil Tjay (No. 90), both from 2019.

Tupac Shakur Honored With Hollywood Walk of Fame Star 27 Years After His Death

Tupac Shakur finally received the ultimate Hollywood honor on Wednesday (June 7), 27 years after his tragic death: a star on the Walk of Fame.

The ceremony, hosted by radio personality Big Boy, paid homage to the beloved West Coast rapper’s laundry list of achievements, within music and beyond. “Though his career lasted just five years, Tupac Shakur remains one of the most complex and prolific artists of his generation, with over 75 million records sold worldwide,” Big Boy said.

Speakers at the ceremony included Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur director Allen Hughes, Shakur’s sister Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, chairman of the board of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Matt Fritch, writer and former Black Panther Party member Jamal Joseph and more.

“When we talk about that global influence, we think of Tupac Amaru Shakur,” Joseph said during his speech. “And yes, that impactful time of the world knowing who Tupac was, was a five- or six-year period. But for everybody who knew Tupac, everybody who was here, we knew he was a star from the time he was a little boy.”

Special ceremony guests included Mike Epps, YG, Tupac’s stepbrother and fellow rapper Mopreme Shakur, Money-B and others.

Shakur’s star marks the 2,758th to grace Hollywood Boulevard. While the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce unanimously selected Tupac for star in 2013, it took a decade for it to come into fruition.

“How fitting in the year of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary that the art form’s most transcendent star is finally being placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame?” Hughes asked the crowd during his speech.

In addition to Wednesday’s honor, Tupac was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in April 2017. In 2015, the Grammy Museum unveiled an “All Eyez on Me” exhibit and recently, in 2022, The Canvas @ L.A. Live hosted a “Wake Me When I’m Free” immersive experience, honoring the late rapper, poet, actor and activist.

“Today, we aren’t just honoring a star on the sidewalk; we are honoring the very essence of a person who fearlessly pursued his dreams and fought to turn them into reality,” said his sister, Sekyiwa. “This is Tupac’s moment — the culmination of years of dedication and passion.

“Even before the world recognized his name, he dreamed of having a star on the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame,” Sekyiwa added. “And today, the unveiling of Tupac’s star not only pays tribute to his contributions to the entertainment industry but also speaks volumes about his lasting impact, even after 25 years. I couldn’t be prouder of my brother to watch his star now shine even brighter.”

Taylor Swift Earns First Rock & Alternative Airplay Chart Appearance

Taylor Swift makes her first visit to Billboard’s Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, as The National’s “The Alcott,” on which she’s featured, debuts at No. 45 on the June 10-dated ranking.

The song reaches the list with 636,000 radio audience impressions on rock radio formats, up 12%, May 26-June 1, according to Luminate.

It’s not Swift’s first appearance on any rock radio chart, however. She has notched four entries on Adult Alternative Airplay, beginning with the No. 9-peaking “Exile,” featuring Bon Iver, in November 2020. She followed with “Coney Island,” featuring The National (No. 18, March 2021), and “Snow on the Beach,” featuring Lana Del Rey (No. 30, this January).

“The Alcott” concurrently lifts 18-15 on the latest Adult Alternative Airplay survey, driving its Rock & Alternative Airplay debut.

“The Alcott” is The National’s sixth song to reach Rock & Alternative Airplay. Its highest charter is “Tropic Morning News,” which reached No. 25 in March.

With her maiden Rock & Alternative Airplay showing, Swift has now reached the following radio tallies: Adult Alternative Airplay, Adult Contemporary, Adult Pop Airplay, Country Airplay, Dance/Mix Show Airplay, Holiday Airplay, Latin Airplay, Latin Pop Airplay, Pop Airplay, all-format Radio Songs, Rock & Alternative Airplay and Rhythmic Airplay.

Swift concurrently appears on three pop/adult charts. On Adult Pop Airplay, “Anti-Hero” is at No. 3 (after a personal-best nine weeks at No. 1) and “Karma,” featuring Ice Spice, rises to No. 11. “Karma” also ascends to No. 8 on Pop Airplay. On Adult Contemporary, “Anti-Hero” places at No. 2, following a three-week reign.

Swift has charted three titles on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums ranking: the No. 1s Folklore and Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions and the No. 3-peaking Evermore.

“The Alcott” is The National’s second single from First Two Pages of Frankenstein, the band’s ninth studio album, following “Tropic Morning News.” The set debuted at No. 1 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums survey dated May 13 and has earned 59,000 equivalent album units to date.

President Joe Biden Announces Juneteenth Concert at White House: Exclusive

The White House announced on Wednesday (June 7) that President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden will be hosting a Juneteenth concert on the South Lawn on June 13.

The event comes two years after Biden signed a bipartisan legislation establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19 annually, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. “Juneteenth marks both the long, hard night of slavery and subjugation, and a promise of a brighter morning to come. This is a day of profound — in my view — profound weight and profound power,” Biden said at the time of signing the bill. “A day in which we remember the moral stain, the terrible toll that slavery took on the country and continues to take — what I’ve long called ‘America’s original sin.’”

The Juneteenth concert event is supported by National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, Pernod Ricard USA, Starz, The Recording Academy of the United States and #TaketheLead. It feature Jennifer Hudson, Audra McDonald, Method Man, Colman Domingo, Ledisi, Patina Miller, Step Afrika! and more.

The Juneteenth concert will take place during Black Music Month. Also known as African-American Music Appreciation Month, Black Music Month was formally recognized as a national monthlong observance in 2000. “I call upon public officials, educators, and all the people of the United States to observe this month by honoring Black musicians and raising awareness and appreciation of Black music,” Biden wrote in a briefing officially declaring June 2023 as Black Music Month.

Jimin Surprises Fans With Sweet ‘Dear ARMY’ Music Video

BTS is celebrating 10 years since their debut, and Jimin took some time on Wednesday (June 7) to show his appreciation for fans with a sweet live performance of “Dear ARMY.”

The track is a hidden song found on the CD version of Jimin’s solo debut album, FACE, inside the English version of “Like Crazy.” In the corresponding clip, the 27-year-old star is seen amid a lush green landscape as he croons the lyrics into a microphone.

The surprise video comes just a week before BTS 10th Anniversary FESTA is set to take place on June 17 in Seoul, South Korea. The event at Yeouido, Seoul, will be open to the public, and more information about the FESTA will arrive at a later date.

Jimin’s six-track FACE arrived back in March and entered the Billboard 200 albums chart upon its release at No. 2, with its breakout single “Like Crazy” topping the Hot 100 songs chart. The debut made Jimin the first South Korean solo artist to top the Hot 100 in the chart’s nearly 65-year history.

The star admitted to Consequence ahead of the release that he was nervous for his solo debut before its grand unveiling, explaining, “I don’t want to be an embarrassment to my members. I want to be a proud member of BTS” before hinting that the album will explore “how I overcame… If people understand the emotions I’m trying to express, I’ll consider the album a success.”
