Ed Sheeran Speaks Punjabi on New Song ‘Sapphire,’ His ‘Favorite’ Track on Upcoming Album ‘Play’

Ed Sheeran‘s love for India sparkles on his new song “Sapphire,” which dropped alongside an adventurous music video Thursday (June 5).

On the effervescent dance track, the British pop star mixes percussion elements of traditional Indian music with his signature absurdly catchy melodies, singing about never wanting to stop dancing with a lover whose aura shimmers just like the blue diamond for which the song is named.

“We are surrounded but I can only see/ The lights, your face, your eyes/ Exploding like fireworks in the sky,” Sheeran sings on the song.

Adding flair to the recording are vocals and sitar provided by Indian artist Arijit Singh, who also appears with the four-time Grammy winner in the “Sapphire” music video. Filmed across various locations in India during Sheeran’s tour through the country earlier this year, the visual keeps the English musician in the center of the frame as he walks through bustling streets, explores beaches, visits tourist spots, hangs out with locals and sings with a team of youth soccer players.

Trending on Billboard

His companion in those sites is often Singh, with whom Sheeran sings in Punjabi, “ਚਮ-ਚਮ ਚਮਕੇ ਸਿਤਾਰੇ ਵਰਗੀ” — which translates to “They sparkle just like stars,” according to YouTube’s captions.

“‘Sapphire’ was the first song I finished for Play that made me know where the album was heading,” wrote the “A Team” singer in a statement, referring to his September-slated LP. “It’s why I finished the recording process in Goa surrounded by some of the best musicians in India.”

“The final jigsaw piece for me was getting Arijit on the record,” he continued. “Me and him have done a full Punjabi version of the song that will come out in the next few weeks, which has a lot more of him on it. This is the album version of the song, and my favorite song on the album. Hope you guys love it.”

“Sapphire” follows previous Play singles “Azizam” and “Old Phone,” the latter of which dropped at the beginning of May. Arriving Sept. 12, the new album will serve as the first in Sheeran’s next series of LPs, marking a departure from his yearslong mathematics-themed saga.

“Play was an album that was made as a direct response to the darkest period of my life,” he recently wrote on Instagram. “Coming out of all of that I just wanted to create joy and technicolor, and explore cultures in the countries I was touring. It’s a real rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish, it encapsulates everything that I love about music, and the fun in it, but also where I am in life as a human, a partner, a father.”

Here’s Our Dream Setlist for Nine Inch Nails’ Peel It Back Tour

Hey, pigs! All of our dreams practically came true when Nine Inch Nails announced in January that the band was hitting the road for the Peel It Back world tour in 2025. (“Practically,” because some of us are still awaiting that new album announcement.)

It didn’t take long after the news arrived for fans to start speculating as to who might open for the Grammy-winning band, who hasn’t released a proper NIN album since March 2020’s surprise drops of the instrumentals Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts — and going farther back, to 2018’s Bad Witch, if we’re talking music with lyrics. Potential openers that were floated on forums such as Reddit have ranged from the industrial (Health, Youth Code) to synth-pop(Gary Numan) to dance/electronic (Boy Harsher). But it was electro-house veteran Boys Noize — Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ Challengers soundtrack collaborator — who NIN revealed in March had landed the coveted gig.

But what discussion of the Peel It Back Tour ahead of its June 15 launch in Dublin would be complete without a massive “Wish” list of tracks fans are hoping to hear live? With an impressive catalogue that includes 10 studio albums (plus three EPs, a live set and multiple film soundtracks) since 1989’s Pretty Hate Machine, that’s a heck of a lot of hits and fan-favorite deep cuts to consider fitting into a set.

That said, NIN might’ve offered some not-so-subtle hints about where the focus may be. After all, the critically lauded The Downward Spiral marked its 30th anniversary last year, and the name of this tour comes from the lyrics off the album’s lead single, “March of the Pigs,” so it wouldn’t be a surprise if the setlist was TDS heavy. (Perhaps the 14-track album will even be played front to back? It’s not exactly a pie-in-the-sky wish, since NIN performed the Broken EP from beginning to end at several shows during its 2018 tour, a year after the 1992 release marked its 25th anniversary.) Or maybe given Reznor’s harsh criticisms during the first Trump Administration, things will take a political bent, with a heavier-than-expected focus on 2007’s Year Zero. With the band’s penchant for regularly changing up the setlist from night to night, who knows what fans will be treated to!

But for the sake of discussion, let’s assume TDS will not be played in full. So what will make it to the stage while other worthy songs are set aside to fit into the allotted time for what could be a best-of trek? With the tour kickoff quickly approaching, nothing can stop us now from coming up with our dream setlist.

Travis Scott’s First-Ever Barcelona Performance Is Now a Streamable Concert Film

A day ahead of El Clásico, Travis Scott made his debut in Barcelona with a thrilling concert on May 10, which Spotify has now turned into a short film.

Spotify Presents: Travis Scott Live From Barcelona arrived on the streaming service’s platform on Thursday (June 5) about a month after Scott hit the Spanish stage at Parc de les Tres Xemeneies.

La Flame brought the rage to the intimate show, which saw him perform a pair of unreleased JACKBOYS 2 tracks as well as catalog staples such as “FE!N,” “Goosebumps,” “Highest in the Room,” “4×4,” “Butterfly Effect” and “SICKO MODE.”

Trending on Billboard

“This film is a piece of the energy we created in Barcelona,” Scott said in a statement. “The fans showed up for my first performance there and it was a wild, real moment. Now fans around the world can tap in and feel that same vibe.”

The 18-minute performance film will remain a Spotify exclusive until Friday (June 6) when it comes to YouTube.

Scott and Spotify have enjoyed a lucrative partnership, as they previously teamed up for the 10th anniversary show of Days Before Rodeo in August 2024 in Atlanta.

“This partnership with Travis is a perfect example of how Spotify is deepening the connection between artists and fans,” said Marc Hazan, who serves as the vice president of partnerships and marketing at Spotify, in a statement. “Bringing a global icon like Travis Scott to perform in Barcelona created a once-in-a-lifetime moment for fans on the ground — and capturing it on film, exclusively for Spotify, allows us to share that with fans around the world. It’s about offering new ways to experience video, and to feel closer to the artists they love.”

The Houston native designed Cactus Jack jerseys for Barcelona’s soccer team to wear at El Clásico, which Barce won 4-3 over rival Real Madrid on May 11. The rare jersey collaboration saw a public release and sold out within minutes.

One Direction’s ‘Night Changes’ Music Video Hits 1 Billion Views on YouTube

1D has hit 1B — again. More than a decade after its release, the music video for One Direction‘s “Night Changes” has surpassed a billion views on YouTube, marking the band’s fourth visual to reach the milestone.

Directed by Ben Winston and posted in November 2014, the “Night Changes” music video gave fans the chance to experience what it would be like to do something many of them had long dreamed of: go on a date with one (or all) of the members of the band. Shot in a first-person POV, viewers were made to feel like they were sitting down at a fancy restaurant with Zayn Malik, ice skating with Harry Styles, riding shotgun next to Louis Tomlinson, sitting by a cozy fire with Niall Horan and walking around a carnival with Liam Payne.

As the guys sing the mellow lyrics to the hit song in the video, things hilariously start to go wrong on each of their “dates.” A disgruntled ex dumps spaghetti on Malik’s head, Styles injures himself and his love interest in a misguided move on the ice, Tomlinson is pulled over and arrested by a road cop, Horan accidentally sets his sweater sleeve on fire and Payne vomits in his date’s hat after getting too dizzy on a spinning fair ride.

Trending on Billboard

“We’re only gettin’ older, baby/ And I’ve been thinking about it lately/ Does it ever drive you crazy/ Just how fast the night changes?” the quintet sings in unison as the video’s vibes quickly turn from romantic to catastrophic.

Released as a single from 1D’s fourth studio album, Four, “Night Changes” is considered a staple in the boy band’s catalog. The track reached No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100, one of numerous top 40 hits One Direction achieved between the group’s debut in 2010 and dissolution in 2016.

Following Payne’s death last October, many of the guys’ songs experienced a streaming boost as grieving Directioners revisited their discography while processing the news — but “Night Changes” was the song fans flocked to the most. The track’s playback saw a 416% increase in the days that followed the “Strip That Down” singer’s fatal fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, re-entering both the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart at No. 95 and the Billboard Global 200 at No. 117.

Monkees’ Micky Dolenz Reveals He Lost Out on ‘Happy Days’ Fonzie Role to Henry Winkler: ‘I Almost Got It’

Arthur Fonzarelli could have had a way different vibe if the team behind beloved 1970s/early ’80s sitcom Happy Days had gone with their second choice. At least according to The Monkees drummer Micky Dolenz, who told People magazine that back in the day he auditioned for the role of the jukebox-smacking, shark-jumping bad boy with a heart of gold.

After his run on The Monkees (1966-1968), the last surviving member of that American fab four said he was on the hunt for a role that would break him out of the mop top drummer cage, so in 1973 he auditioned for the role of Arthur “The Fonzie” Fonzarelli, the leather jacket-wearing greaser next door who became the break-out star of the show.

Trending on Billboard

“I almost got it,” Dolenz, 80, said. “Supposedly it was between me and Henry [Winkler]. He remembers it too. The story I heard is that he was in the waiting room, saw me come in, and thought, ‘Oh s–t, I’ll never get this — Micky Dolenz is here!’ So we laugh about it now. He’s a good friend and a brilliant talent.”

While Yale School of Drama grad Winkler came into his audition with plenty of stage experience and roles in the indie movies The Lords of Flatbush and Crazy Joe, Dolenz was already a seasoned TV pro by the time he auditioned for Happy Days. At 11, he got the lead role of Corky in the adventure series Circus Boy, which ran on NBC for one season before jumping to ABC for another short run in 1957. A young Dolenz then scored a few TV roles in the late 1950s and early 1960s — credited as Micky Braddock — before being cast as Micky on The Monkees alongside Michael Nesmith, Davy Jones and Peter Tork.

When that show ended, Dolenz decided to focus on directing and producing, realizing that his gig as the spacey, floppy-haired drummer would likely get him typecast like his father, George Dolenz, an actor he said got pegged as a “swashbuckling romantic lead in sword-fighting movies” such as The Purple Mask and Sign of the Pagan.

“After Circus Boy, I went to a few auditions as a 12-year-old, and the minute I walked in, they’d say, ‘Circus Boy’! That’s just typical in this business. I knew it was par for the course,” said Dolenz, who added that after the Monkees it was more of the same. “‘What are you doing here? We don’t need any drummers!’” he said casting directors would tell him.

Following his pivot to a number of small movie roles and voice work on dozens of cartoons in the 1970s, “I’m a Believer” singer Dolenz said he has no regrets about the one that got away. “Oh my God, he’s just so good,” he said of Winkler, who parlayed his iconic role into a fifty-plus year career on TV (Mork & Mindy, Arrested Development) and movies (Night Shift, The French Dispatch). “I was definitely not as good as he was. Come on — he was The Fonz! He had that New York, New Jersey thing down. I’m from Southern California. It wasn’t gonna happen!,” Dolenz said.

Dolenz is going on tour this summer with his Songs & Stories tour, which mixes his iconic hits with stories about fellow L.A. legends such as Joni Mitchell, David Crosby and Jim Morrison. The tour is slated to kick off on August 11 at the Ocean City Music Pier in Ocean City, NJ.

ESPN has been using numerous Wayne tracks to soundtrack NBA Playoffs ads this season, including “I Am Not a Human Being,” “Uproar” and the “Glory (Remix).”

“Lil Wayne brings the energy, edge and emotion that define the NBA Finals,” Curtis Friends, vice president of sports marketing at ESPN, said in a statement. “Integrating his music into our NBA Playoffs coverage has been a strategic brand flex — amplifying our storytelling and connecting with fans as we showcase today’s rising stars on the league’s biggest stage.”

Tiësto & Sexyy Red Get Slinky on New Collab ‘OMG!’: Stream It Now

Tiësto and Sexyy Red are revving their engines with the just-released collab “OMG!”

The slinky song, in which Sexyy Red opines about maxing out credit cards, breaking the rules and being “too high to be cool” over the Dutch producer’s woozy beat, comes from the forthcoming soundtrack to the Brad Pitt-starring racing film F1.

“Who would have thought that Tiësto would have a collab with Sexyy Red?” the producer recently told Billboard backstage at EDC Las Vegas. “No one, absolutely no one, but here it is, and it’s an amazing track. I think people will really like it. It’s super dance.”

“OMG!” has been in the works for awhile, with Tiësto playing it during a huge performance in October at the annual dance gathering ADE. The track comes from the F1 the Album soundtrack, with the corresponding film hitting theaters on June 27, the same day the soundtrack will be released.

Tiësto, a known racing fan, also makes a cameo in the film, which stars Pitt as an aging F1 driver who returns to the sport after a long absence, along with Damson Idris, Kerry Condon and Javier Bardem. F1 The Movie was directed by Joseph Kosinski, who also directed the global blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick.

Lorde Says This NSFW ‘Virgin’ Song ‘Destroys’ Her: ‘I Can’t Even Really Listen to It’

Lorde revealed in a new interview that she has multiple favorite songs from her upcoming album, Virgin. But on the other side of the coin, there’s one that she can’t even listen to because of how raw it is — and it’s about a pretty NSFW topic.

Speaking to Jake Shane on an episode of his Therapuss podcast posted Wednesday (June 4), the New Zealand native shared that track seven — which is named after a popular pregnancy test brand — is particularly emotional for her. “There’s a song that I love so much called ‘Clearblue’ that is about unprotected sex,” she began, laughing.

“And just the experience of taking a pregnancy test, and like, this flood of emotions that goes through your body,” she continued, noting that the track is one of several “slammers” on the album. “Whatever you want to say — it’s such a moment.”

Trending on Billboard

“That whole song just destroys me,” Lorde added. “I can’t even really listen to it.”

According to the pop star, “Clearblue” is one of several songs on Virgin that features sexual content, despite the album’s contradicting name. She explained to Shane of the title, “It speaks to a sort of purity, but the album is quite sexual, so it wasn’t sexual purity … virgin steel, virgin hair, all of these things that denote purity, but I’m also kind of always trying to take me to my teen self.”

Arriving June 27, Virgin will mark Lorde’s first album in four years. In the weeks leading up to its release, she’s been open about how the confluence of stopping birth control, recovering from disordered eating habits and embracing her gender fluidity have shaped the project’s direction.

The album’s subject matter and percussive, electric sound are expected to mark a distinct shift from the Grammy winner’s last project, Solar Power, which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. That LP found Lorde singing about her gravitation toward a more peaceful, unplugged lifestyle after years of living the pop-star life following the successes of 2013 debut album Pure Heroine and 2017 follow-up Melodrama. But on Therapuss, she revealed that the concept of Solar Power doesn’t really resonate with who she is today.

“I love Solar Power so much, and I truly needed to make it,” she told Shane. “I wouldn’t be here with another album if I hadn’t made Solar Power, but I think it showed me that you sort of just have no choice but to be what you’re supposed to be. Me sort of disappearing and being all wafty and on the beach, I was just like, ‘Actually, I don’t think this is me.’ I just am this person that’s meant to make bangers that f–k us all up … I love to vibe out. That is me to my core.”

The EP opens with the midtempo tune “Flashover” and features the Justin Timberlake-like slow-burn beat ballad and first single “Bad Desire (With or Without You) — reprised later on the album in an English version. The group also released a sci-fi video for the song in which the members fall up into a fiery sky, where they pull off their signature choreo in a roundhouse, a smoldering hellscape and on a rainy plain as unseen forces float them above the chaotic fray, which also includes a giant flying rat-like creature.

The mini album as features the banging rap tune “Outside,” bouncy, doo wop-y “Loose” (in both Korean and English versions), as well as dark rocker “Helium” and jazzy ballad “Too Close.”

The follow-up to last year’s full-length album, Romance: Untold and reissue Romance: Untold – Daydream is described in a release as a raw exploration of “an all-consuming yearning to become an equal with the one they love, conveying both desire and restraint through ENHYPEN’s signature emotional lens.”

The group — HEESUNG, JAY, JAKE, SUNGHOON, SUNOO, JUNGWON AND NI-KI — are gearing up to launch their Walk the Line world tour later this summer with an Aug. 6 kick-off at UBS Arena in Belmont Park, NY, followed by gigs in Chicago, two nights in Houston and an Aug. 16 gig at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles before hoping over to Europe.
