Sombr Earns His First Radio Chart No. 1

Sombr scores his first No. 1 on a Billboard airplay chart, as “Back to Friends” completes a 10-week trip to the top of the Alternative Airplay list dated June 14.

By taking 10 weeks from debut to reign, “Back to Friends” marks the quickest Alternative Airplay coronation for an act making a maiden appearance on the tally in nearly a decade, following the eight-week rise for X Ambassadors’ “Renegade,” which hit No. 1 in June 2015.

(Of note: Måneskin’s “Beggin’” led in its seventh week in 2021; while it was the band’s first leader, it was the band’s second appearance, as “I Wanna Be Your Slave” debuted on the ranking three weeks earlier than “Beggin’.” It reached No. 21 just before “Beggin’ ” hit No. 1.)

Concurrently, “Back to Friends” leaps 13-8 on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart via 2.8 million audience impressions in the week ending June 5, up 43%, according to Luminate. In addition to its alternative radio support, the song is bubbling under Adult Alternative Airplay.

Sombr currently has two songs scaling Billboard airplay charts. “Undressed” leaps 23-19 on Adult Pop Airplay and 22-19 on Pop Airplay. “Back to Friends” is also bubbling under the latter.

On the most recently published multimetric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart (dated June 7, reflecting song consumption May 23-29), “Undressed” and “Back to Friends” rank at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. In addition to their radio airplay, “Undressed” earned 11.6 million official U.S. streams in that span, while “Back to Friends” racked up 11.7 million.

All Billboard charts dated June 14 will update Tuesday, June 10, on Billboard.com.

Lil Weezer Strikes Again: Lil Wayne Spins Weezer’s ‘Island In the Sun’ Into Breezy ‘Island Holiday’ on ‘Tha Carter VI’

Lil Wayne has long had a fascination with rock. The rapper even released a whole album devoted to his love of the genre back in 2010, Rebirth. He also appears to have a specific thing for Weezer, who prefaced his rock pivot in 2009 by inviting the legendary New Orleans MC to appear on their Polow da Don-produced single “Can’t Stop Partying” from the Raditude album.

Now, Weezer F. Baby is returning the favor on his just-released Tha Carter VI album on the song “Island Holiday,” a Wayne-ified remake of Weezer’s 2001 power pop single “Island in the Sun.” The track opens with an AutoTuned Wayne crooning the original song’s opening verse — “When you’re on a holiday/ You can’t find the word to say/ All the things that come to you/ And I wanna feel it too” — over a sample of the tune’s familiar strummy guitar before a skittery beat comes in and the MC takes off in his signature quirky direction.

In Wayne’s hands, the “hip-hip” refrain turns into “sip-sip” as he asks a woman what she’s drinking before getting down to business. “Just got paid/ Where’s my shades?/ I’m on demon time, am I late?/ Bad b–ch on my plate, fed my face/ Just got an acting coach to help me act my age,” Wayne raps woozily over a spare beat and hi-hat sizzles.

The rest of the song is a similar combo of original Wayne lyrics and his take on the Weezer lines, including a bit in the chorus where he sings, “On an island in the sun/ Breakin’ bread you can have the crumbs/ And it makes me feel so fire/ I can’t control my flame”; the original lyrics had Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo singing: “On an island in the sun/ We’ll be playing and having fun/ And it makes me feel so fine/ I can’t control my brain.”

The track ends with Wayne chanting the album’s name and bragging what sounds like “I got Weezer the band on this one” before a fiery guitar solo break, though at press time the song’s credits were not available on Spotify or Apple Music, so it was unclear if Cuomo or any other Weezer members actually appear on the song.

The Weezer connect isn’t the only rock team-up on the album, as U2 singer Bono pops in on the soaring ballad “The Days” and rapper/rocker MGK makes a hazy cameo on the album-ending “Alone in the Studio With My Gun.”

Wayne will kick off his Carter VI tour on Friday (June 6) at Madison Square Garden in his first solo headlining gig at the storied NYC arena.

Addison Rae hosted an exclusive, intimate album listening event at The Box in New York City on Thursday (June 5), giving fans a first listen to her self-titled debut, Addison, which officially arrived hours later. The event, hosted by Spotify, featured the live premiere of new songs, offering fans an opportunity to experience the music ahead of its release at midnight. 

The special event saw fans lining up hours in advance to get the chance to hear her sing live. Among the famous names who attended were Conan Gray, Julia Fox, Clairo and Jade.

She first appeared on Billboard’s charts in 2021, with her debut single “Obsessed” on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 tally. In August 2023, she released her debut EP, AR, featuring a collaboration with Charli XCX.

Her rising popularity led “Diet Pepsi” — her first major-label release under Columbia Records — to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 86 in September. Following this success, she released several more singles, including “Aquamarine,” “High Fashion” and “Headphones On,” each showcasing her evolving sound and artistic vision.

Ed Sheeran, “Sapphire” 

Ed Sheeran continues to explore different musical cultures on “Sapphire,” a free-spirited new anthem that, like recent single “Azizam,” looks east for inspiration: with backing vocals and sitar from Indian superstar Arijit Singh, the song doubles down on the growing trend of South Asian production reaching Europe and North America, in the name of a type of love without geographical boundaries.

KATSEYE feat. Ice Spice, “Gnarly (Remix)”

Billy Joel Details Two Suicide Attempts After Affair With Bandmate’s Wife in ‘And So It Goes’ Documentary

The first part of the new Billy Joel documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes, premiered at the Tribeca Festival in New York on Wednesday and it featured a section about one of the most difficult periods in the 76-year-old singer’s life. According to People, the film co-directed by Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin delves into a dark incident early in Joel’s career when he attempted suicide two times after having an affair with a former bandmate’s wife.

“Bill and I spent a lot of time together,” Elizabeth Weber says in the documentary about the affair she had with Joel when he was in his 20s and she was married to the singer’s best friend and Atila bandmate drummer Jon Small. She says in the film that the affair was a “slow build” until Small, who had a son with Weber, suspected something was going on and Joel fessed up to the affair, telling him, “I’m in love with your wife.”

Joel — who did not attend the premiere after cancelling a summer run of shows due to a recent diagnosis of the brain condition normal pressure hydrocephalus — says in the film that he felt “very, very guilty about it. They had a child. I felt like a homewrecker. I was just in love with a woman and I got punched in the nose which I deserved. Jon was very upset. I was very upset.”

The brawl marked the end of Atila and the pair’s friendship, with Weber leaving Small — and later reconnecting with Joel, to whom she was married from 1973-1982 — and the singer spiraling into a dark period of drink and depression. “I had no place to live. I was sleeping in laundromats and I was depressed I think to the point of almost being psychotic,” Joel says in the film. “So I figured, ‘That’s it. I don’t want to live anymore.’ I was just in a lot of pain and it was sort of like why hang out, tomorrow is going to be just like today is and today sucks. So, I just thought I’d end it all.”

Joel’s sister, Judy Molinari, was a medical assistant at the time and she gave him some sleeping pills to help him get some rest. “But Billy decided that he was going to take all of them… he was in a coma for days and days and days,” she says: “I went to go see him in the hospital, and he was laying there white as a sheet. I thought that I’d killed him.”

The singer said he was “very selfish” at the time and recalled waking up in the hospital determined to end his life again. Molinari said her brother drank a bottle of the furniture cleaner Lemon Pledge, with Small driving him to the hospital after that attempt. “Even though our friendship was blowing up, John saved my life,” he says of his former bandmate.

“He never really said anything to me, the only practical answer I can give as to why Billy took it so hard was because he loved me that much and that it killed him to hurt me that much. Eventually I forgave him,” Small says in the movie. Joel later wrote the song “Tomorrow Is Today” for his 1971 Cold Spring Harbor album, in which he delves into his despondent feelings at the time. “Oh my I’m goin’ to the river/ Gonna take a ride and the lord will deliver me/ Made my bed, I’m gonna lie in it/ If you don’t come, sure gonna die in it,” he sings on the track.

At Wednesday’s premiere, Lacy shared a message with the audience from Joel in which she said “He will be back. Billy wishes he were here tonight, and he asked us to convey his greetings to you all. He said ‘getting old sucks, but it’s still preferable to getting cremated.’” Billy Joel: And So It Goes will stream on HBO in July.

Sabrina Carpenter Pokes Fun at ‘Stupid, Slow & Useless’ Men in Western ‘Manchild’ Music Video

Take it from Sabrina Carpenter, dating can be like the Wild West — especially when so many eligible prospects turn out to be stupid, slow and useless. Or, in other words: a “Manchild.”

Following her new single’s release the day prior, the pop star dropped the hilarious music video for “Manchild” Friday morning (June 6). In the Vania Heymann and Gal Muggia-directed visual, Carpenter travels all over the American West by hitching rides with a diverse crop of men, whose only similarities are their propensities for odd modes of transportation and their inability to get the Grammy winner where she needs to go.

Barreling down the highway on the back of a jet ski, in a shopping cart attached to a motorcycle and on the arm of a motorized recliner chair, Carpenter repeatedly rolls her eyes and sings, “Stupid, or is it slow/ Maybe it’s useless/ But there’s a cuter word for it, I know/ Manchild/ Why you always come a-running to me?/ F–k my life/ Won’t you let an innocent woman be?”

“it’s exactly what i pictured in my head,” the Girl Meets World alum wrote of the video on Instagram shortly after it dropped. “no animals were harmed in the making but some men were.”

Released Thursday (June 5), “Manchild” marks Carpenter’s first piece of new music since the Short n’ Sweet deluxe album brought forth bonus tracks “15 Minutes,” “Couldn’t Make It Any Harder,” “Busy Woman” and “Bad Reviews.” The original LP arrived in August and spent four weeks atop the Billboard 200, marking the musician’s first-ever No. 1 album on the chart.

According to Carpenter, she penned the track with songwriter Amy Allen and producer Jack Antonoff shortly after finishing Short n’ Sweet. “it ended up being the best random tuesday of my life,” the “Espresso” artist wrote on Instagram Thursday. “this song became to me something I can look back on that will score the mental montage to the very confusing and fun young adult years of life.”

Carpenter is currently on a short break from her Short n’ Sweet Tour, which kicked off last fall with a North American leg in September. This spring, she traveled across Europe on a run of dates that will pick back up with two performances at London’s Hyde Park in July, followed by another round of shows in the United States and Canada.

Chappell Roan Did the Viral ‘Apple’ Dance During Charli xcx’s Primavera Sound Set: ‘Love You B–ch!’

Charli xcx had a very special guest for her Primavera Sound set in Barcelona at the Parc del Fòrum on Thursday night (June 5). On opening night of the festival, Chappell Roan shocked the crowd when she showed up to expertly do the viral “Apple” dance during Charli’s set (watch the moment below).

Chappell, wearing a grey skirt and black top covered by a cut-up sweatshirt, slapped on a pair of oversized bug-eye glasses as she joyously bounced along to the song from Charli’x Brat album along with a handful of other fans from what looked like a balcony. Roan lip synched along to the lyrics “I think the apple’s rotten right to the core/ From all the things passed down/ From all the apples coming before” while doing the dance’s signature hand jive.

The footage was shared on the big screens flanking the stage, which made the crowd go wild. Roan appeared to be loving it and Charli also seemed elated by the A-list pop in, shouting, “Make some f–king noise right now! Chappell I f–kin’ love you b–ch!” as Roan shook her butt for the camera. Roan will get her chance on stage at Primavera when she headlines on Saturday night (June 7).

The special moment came 20 songs into Charli’s 31-song setlist as part of a tradition during the singer’s Brat-era shows when the camera finds someone in the crowd to do the dance. Roan isn’t the only fellow star to take on the challenge, either. New Jersey Man Arrested For Allegedly Stealing Heart Instruments

A New Jersey man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a pair of instruments from Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Heart. Just days after the band offered a reward for the return of a custom guitar and mandolin they said were stolen from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City on the night before they kicked off their An Evening With Heart summer tour on Saturday (May 31), the Associated Press reported on Thursday (June 5) that a Pleasantville, N.J. man has been taken into custody.

Atlantic City police said surveillance video first led them to the 57-year-old suspect, who was allegedly seen on video walking through the city trying to sell the instruments. Authorities said that the man eventually succeeded in selling one, while the other is currently unaccounted for — at press time it was unclear which instrument was sold and which one was still missing.

According to NBC 10 Philadelphia, investigators obtained video footage of the theft, which they said took place around 2 a.m. on May 30. They identified the suspect as Garfield Bennett and charged him with theft and burglary on Wednesday (June 4). Officials reported that Bennett has a long criminal record and was previously arrested in April for a prior burglary.

Prior to the arrest, Heart described the missing items as a “custom-built, one-of-a-kind purple sparkle baritone Telecaster with a hand-painted headstock, crafted specifically for [guitarist] Nancy Wilson,” as well as a “vintage 1966 Gibson EM-50 mandolin” that band member Paul Moak has played for over 25 years.

In a statement, band co-founder Wilson, said, “These instruments are more than just tools of our trade — they’re extensions of our musical souls. The baritone Tele was made uniquely for me, and Paul’s mandolin has been with him for decades. We’re heartbroken, and we’re asking for their safe return — no questions asked. Their value to us is immeasurable.”

Police told NBC 10 that they are not sure where Bennett sold the instrument and are asking anyone in possession of the other one to alert Atlantic City Police to return it, warning anyone in possession of the stolen item that they will be arrested and charged with receiving stolen property if they don’t hand it over. “If you’ve got the guitars, bring them back. Turn them in. No questions asked,” Atlantic City Director of Public Safety Sean Riggin told the channel. “If we continue looking and we have to find them, there are absolutely going to be serious criminal charges.”

The country superstar took time out on Thursday night (June 5) to thank tour mate Post Malone for taking him out on this summer’s Big Ass stadium tour. Following the pair’s Wednesday night show at New York’s Citi Field, Jelly posted a long, loving tribute to Posty and praising the rapper-turned-country-crooner for inspiring him every night.

“Dear Austin, I say this on stage in some way every night, but man, being on this tour with you has been unreal. I have never had more fun in my life,” wrote Jelly Roll. “The energy of the people is incredible. You can feel the love reverberate around the stadium every night. And that’s a testament to the spirit you embody and what you’ve done,” he added in a post that included a series of pics of the pair on stage, hugging, laughing and clearly reveling in the moment on the massive outing that will continued hitting stadiums across the U.S. through July 1 before jumping over to Europe.
