The scene at the Chipotle on Ventura Boulevard in the San Fernando Valley at first looked much like any other Friday evening. Six good-looking guys in their early 20s sat around a table eating burritos, laughing and ribbing one another. They had landed at LAX that morning after a 16-hour flight, but despite their jet lag, the vibe was lively.

Then an emergency alert lit up one of their cellphones. Seconds later, a warning buzzed on another device. And then another, and another, and another, and yet one more. It was Oct. 6 — already Oct. 7 on the other side of the world in Israel — and the moment things got very real for as1one, the first-ever boy band comprising Israeli and Palestinian musicians.

The guys had arrived in Los Angeles from Tel Aviv, Israel, to lay down tracks for their forthcoming debut album — a trek made following months of visa coordination and more than a year since the group officially formed, after first being conceived in the United States years prior. The team behind as1one, led by longtime music executives Ken Levitan and James Diener, envisioned a Middle Eastern version of BTS, and in the effort to create it, Israeli and Palestinian casting directors had held auditions in major cities and tiny villages throughout Israel in 2021. (Auditions could not be held in the West Bank or Gaza due to logistical challenges.) A thousand young men auditioned; the six who were glued to their phones at the Sherman Oaks Chipotle had made it in.

Taylor Swift Kicked It ‘Barbie’-Style at Rio Show After Boot Heel Breakdown

Taylor Swift didn’t let an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction throw her off during a third sold-out show at Estádio Nilton Santos in Rio de Janiero on Monday night (Nov. 20). According to videos posted by fans, Swift soldiered on after the heel broke off of one of her glittery Christian Louboutin boots. Welcoming the fans to the international Eras Tour date — in Portuguese no less — Swift pulled a real-life Barbie act by holding the back of her right foot up as if her feet were in permanent high-heel position before diving into “Lover.”

According to EW, it was not clear how or when the heel broke, but it seemed to be missing during her run through “The Man” in an earlier portion of the Lover set. In another video, Swift appears to pull the busted heel off and toss it to the side before getting back to business.

The Monday night gig was a make-up for Saturday’s show at the same venue, which was postponed due to a brutal heatwave hanging over the nation. The rescheduled gig meant that Swift could not be on hand to watch beau Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs face off against the tight end’s brother, Jason Kelce and his Philadelphia Eagles in their eagerly anticipated Monday Night Football showdown.

Saturday night’s show was postponed due to safety concerns over “extreme temperatures” in Rio that topped 100 degrees Fahrenheit. “I’m writing this from my dressing room in the stadium,” Swift shared in a handwritten note on her Instagram Story Saturday. “The decision has been made to postpone tonight’s show due to the extreme temperatures in Rio. The safety and well-being of my fans, fellow performers, and crew has to and always will come first.”

The night before, Swift expressed her sorrow in a post over the loss of 23-year-old fan Ana Clara Benevides Machado, who died after attending the opening night of the singer’s Eras Tour in Rio. The woman was treated by paramedics after she reported not feeling well and was later taken to a hospital, where she died, according to an Instagram post by T4T; Machado’s cause of death has not yet been revealed.

“I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show,” Swift wrote on Instagram. “I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this. There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young.”

How Dolly Parton, Jack Harlow & Steve Aoki Ended Up Playing Halftime at NFL Thanksgiving Games

When it comes to the marriage of football and music, all eyes are generally focused on the Super Bowl, but in recent years, Thanksgiving has become a spectacular ratings feast of its own for the NFL as it combines two of America’s favorite pastimes.

Last year, the three football games played on Thanksgiving drew a total audience of 138 million viewers (defined by Nielsen as the number of people who watched for at least 1 minute of the games). That’s not only a record high for the holiday games, but it makes the NFL’s three halftime shows the most watched music events on television other than the Super Bowl, easily surpassing all major awards shows.

This year could topple that record, as Dolly Parton performs the halftime show at the Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Commanders game, Jack Harlow at the Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers game and Steve Aoki at the Seattle Seahawks vs. the San Francisco 49ers game.

The Lions have hosted a Thanksgiving Day game every year since 1934, and the Cowboys since 1966. In 2006, the NFL added a third Thanksgiving game in prime time, with the match-up changing annually.

Like the Super Bowl, conversations about potential Thanksgiving halftime entertainment begins months in advance, often as early as the spring. “All three teams came to me at the outset to discuss options,” says Seth Dudowsky, the NFL’s head of music. “We collectively brainstorm, and I provide feedback on artist opportunities based on conversations across the industry throughout the offseason. From there, we align on best options and move forward with an offer coming from the team.”

Though the league’s 32 teams have their own dedicated staffs to lead their franchise’s entertainment efforts, Dudowsky’s role is to “be a bridge to the artist and larger music community, while helping teams strategize on artist selection, production execution, media planning, music clearances, and ultimately help the teams and artists tap into the vast NFL ecosystem.”

For this year’s Thanksgiving halftime shows, Dudowsky helped facilitated the introductions between the artists’ teams and Detroit’s senior vp of marketing and brand Emily Griffin and Seattle’s manager of game entertainment and special events Daniel Hardina to help them secure Harlow and Aoki. The Cowboys’ executive vp/chief brand officer Charlotte Jones and vp of brand and marketing Meredith Counce met with Parton’s team when the superstar was in Frisco, Texas, in May to host the Academy of Country Awards after ACM executive director Damon Whiteside made the introductions.

Similarly to the Super Bowl, which will feature Usher at next year’s Feb. 11 game, the goal is to book acts with a broad audience. “We’re looking to feature artists who can appeal to all ages, are culturally relevant, are great performers and ultimately can help us create amazing memories for the fans in attendance and at home,” Dudowksy says. “For us, that isn’t confined to one genre or any specific metric.”

Like the Super Bowl, the acts play for free — though as viewership has risen, the slots have become more competitive. “Certainly as the platform and the game ratings continues to grow, the music community has taken note,” Dudowsky says. “In a media landscape where cutting through the noise is the hardest thing to do, these games provide an unprecedented platform for artist exposure.”

Past halftime performers at Thanksgiving games have included Jonas Brothers, Luke Combs, Pitbull, Destiny’s Child, Big Sean, Bebe Rexha, Mariah Carey and Enrique Iglesias.

NFL Thanksgiving

Landing a superstar like Parton “only further cements the NFL Thanksgiving halftime shows as a platform worthy of the biggest superstars in music,” Dudowsky says.

Each artist performs for roughly six minutes. Fox will air Harlow’s halftime show in full, as will CBS with Parton. NBC will show clips of Aoki’s DJ set interspersed with other footage. The NFL owns the performances and will post Parton’s and Harlow’s sets on their socials following the games.

Parton’s manager, Danny Nozell, says her appearance will feature the biggest production the Cowboys have ever done for a halftime show. Because the time constraints are so precise — Nozell says Parton will perform for exactly six minutes and 15 seconds — they designed a stage on wheels in Nashville for her to practice. “Dolly rehearsed [the halftime show] for a full week here because I didn’t want her going into Dallas and having her going on to the stage for the first time.” Plus, since going over cuts into advertising time, Nozell says, “Dolly is all over me to make sure that she is on that stage and off that stage so we don’t cause anybody heartache and then we are not losing anyone money.”

For Aoki, it was an immediate yes after the DJ’s agent at WME approached him with the offer. “We see sports events are a great unifier,” says his manager Matt Colon. “Performing at a top tier event like F1 last weekend, where Steve performed for the opening, or the NFL game this Thursday allows Steve to not only to play to a larger in person audience but also to a huge swath of demographics that wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to his music or come to his show, and then amplified to a broadcast audience often in the millions or more.”

Aoki’s performance will incorporate an LED light show with fans handed light-up wristbands upon entry, according to a Seahawks press release.

Additionally, the artists are taking advantage of the games for some additional promotion. Harlow has posted fun TikToks, including one with the Lions’ social media manager, as well as appeared on Monday Night Football on Oct. 30 to announce his Thanksgiving appearance, both of which have also helped boost awareness around his new single “Lovin’ on Me.”

Parton, who released Rockstar on Nov. 17, is selling a 2-CD Dallas Cowboys limited edition of the album on her website for $24.95. The exclusive, according to the website, can only be sold at the game and online to certain areas of Texas and across Oklahoma, per NFL rules. A Dolly/Dallas Cowboys T-shirt is available via the Cowboys’ website.

Appearing in the Thanksgiving halftime is a “steppingstone” to potentially playing the Super Bowl, Nozell says. “It’s moving in that direction,” he says. “Dolly and I have talked about it several different times and we thought, ‘Let’s do this first because it really is the second largest viewership to the Super Bowl.’”

Grammy best new artist nominee The War and Treaty will perform the national anthem at the Detroit game; Dallas will feature trumpeter Freddie Jones, who has played the anthem before every Dallas home game since 2013; and Tinashe will handle the honors in Seattle.

For the first time, the NFL will air a game on Black Friday via its deal with Amazon, which began streaming Thursday Night Football games this season. Coordinated through Amazon Music Live, Black Friday’s game between the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets will feature a halftime interview with Garth Brooks promoting his concert from his Nashville bar, Friends in Low Places, that will stream on Amazon Prime and Twitch later that night.

As for Dudowsky, he’ll be watching the Thanksgiving games from his couch, although likely not in a post-turkey, tryptophan-induced coma like millions of Americans. He’ll have his phone and laptop at hand, “ready to react to any last minute (or in-show) issues and how we’re posting afterwards,” he says. “We have incredible production teams at all three games handling the performances on the ground, so if everything goes according to plan, it’s a great day of football, food and music I get to enjoy from home.”

Post Malone Hops on Stage at New Zealand Bar For Impromptu Proclaimers, Sublime Covers Set

Post Malone is spending his Thanksgiving down under. The rap crooner is in the midst of a swing through New Zealand and Australia through early next week, but on a recent night off he did what any global superstar would do: pop into a local Irish pub and sing some favorite tunes while hanging with friends and fans for four hours.

According to TMZ, Posty showed up unexpectedly at tiny Danny Doolan’s Irish Pub in Auckland, New Zealand on Sunday night and sat in with the house band to play a couple covers, including a country-fied ramble through Sublime’s “What I Got.” Dressed in a trucker hat and plaid shirt, the site noted that Malone showed up with a couple friends and stayed all night, hanging and partying with fans who encouraged him to get on the mic and sing with the house band.

He eventually did and in addition to the Sublime nugget, in video posted by TMZ he also tackled beloved Scottish rock duo The Proclaimers’ 1988 single, “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles),” rocking the song up as the crowd shouted along to the “da-da-da-da” chorus.

Posty — who just snagged his first hit on Billboard’s Country Airplay Chart thanks to his duet with the late Joe Diffie on the latter’s 1990s classic “Pickup Man” — will join Alanis Morissette, John Legend, Kacey Musgraves, Kane Brown, Lainey Wilson, Lana Del Rey and The War And Treaty in NBC’s celebration of Elvis Presley on the live music special Christmas at Graceland.

All the artists will pay tribute to the late King of Rock and Roll with performances at the Graceland estate on the special executive produced by Elvis’ granddaughter, Riley Keough.

Ludacris Teases Return to Music After Eight-Year Hiatus: ‘Sometimes You Gotta Step Back and Live Some Life’

Ludacris has done a lot of living in the past eight years. But the one thing he hasn’t done during that time is release any new music. But in a new interview with BET, Luda said it’s time to get back into the game.

“Yeah, some music projects will be coming out next year. I don’t wanna fake, I don’t wanna stutter-step,” Ludacris said. “It’s definitely some music coming next year, but I don’t know if it’s like an EP or an LP. We’re going to figure it out.”

Asked why he’s been off the radar since his ninth LP, 2015’s Ludaversal — which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and included features from Usher, Miguel and Monica — the rapper said his acting has definitely kept him out of the studio. Since his last album, he’s appeared in four Fast & Furious movies, as well as The Ride, End of the Road and the new holiday movie, Dashing Through the Snow.

“These movie projects like Fast & Furious and doing a lot of things like the Karma’s World project that’s on Netflix. You know, doing other art forms where I’m creative, where I’m putting my heart into that, I want to make sure that I leave a legacy on this earth,” said the MC who also got a honorary bachelor’s degree in music from Georgia State last summer. “So it was just taking a step back and getting hungry again, living some life. ‘Cause when you put out music, in order for it to be organic and real, you gotta talk about what goes on in your life. So if I had like nine consistent albums, sometimes you gotta take a step back and live some life so that you have a lot more to talk about and that’s what I was doing.”

As for what the new tunes will sound like, Luda said it’s a “little premature” to talk about it because he’s working on “a lot of stuff.” In the meantime, he’s been dropping freestyles on his social feeds, including a killer one on 4/20 and one last November in which he caught fans up on his prodigious career achievements.

Given his impressive movie resume, Ludacris said he still has some boxes he’d like to check on that side, including playing a villain on the big screen. “I definitely would love to be a part of the Marvel universe or DC universe, but I wouldn’t mind playing the villain that doesn’t die,” he said. “That’s what I’m looking for — one of those roles or like a Training Day villain-type role.”

Dua Lipa’s ‘Houdini’ Unlocks No. 1 Debut on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs Chart

Dua Lipa works her magic on multiple Billboard charts dated Nov. 25 with her new single, “Houdini.” Among other entrances, it begins as her first No. 1 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

The song drew 23.8 million airplay audience impressions and 12.4 million official streams and sold 7,000 sold downloads in the U.S. Nov. 10-16, according to Luminate, following its release at 6 p.m. ET Nov. 9.

Lipa earns her second No. 1 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs with the track, which previews her third studio album, expected in 2024. She spent 36 weeks at the summit with “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix),” with Elton John, beginning in October 2021.

The new song, whose title is an ode to famous late illusionist and escape artist Harry Houdini, also launches at No. 11 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, where it’s Lipa’s highest debut to date.

On the Radio Songs chart, “Houdini” starts at No. 25, likewise Lipa’s best beginning. It debuts at No. 16 on Pop Airplay, also a new personal first-week high, and No. 20 on Adult Pop Airplay.

As previously reported, “Houdini” enters at No. 3 on the Billboard Global 200, with 51 million streams and 13,000 sold worldwide. Lipa notches her fourth top 10 on the survey. The song also opens at No. 5 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart, where it’s her fifth top 10.

Lipa celebrated the song’s arrival with fans at the Houdini Estate in Los Angeles on Nov. 14, inviting them to navigate an escape room and, once safely free (if?), to dance.

Following his death nearly a century ago, Houdini has reappeared as the subject of other chart hits. Walter Brennan spent a week at No. 100 on the Hot 100 in 1962 with “Houdini”; Kon Kan hit No. 33 on Dance Singles Sales in 1989 with “Harry Houdini”; and Foster the People’s “Houdini” hit No. 37 on Alternative Airplay in 2012.

Kelly Clarkson Delivers a Frank Sinatra Classic on ‘Kellyoke’

Kelly Clarkson kicked off the week with a classic on Monday (Nov. 20), when she performed Frank Sinatra’s rendition of “I Get a Kick Out of You.”

“I get no kick from champagne / Mere alcohol doesn’t thrill me at all / So tell me why should it be true / That I get a kick out of you,” Clarkson muses in the chorus, dressed in a black off-the-shoulder top and leopard print maxi skirt.

“I Get a Kick Out of You” was originally written by Cole Porter and first performed in 1934 for the Broadway musical Anything Goes, before it was featured in the 1936 film. Over the years, the track has been covered by legends beyond Sinatra, including Dolly Parton, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga. The Bennett/Gaga rendition was nominated for three awards at the 2022 Grammy Awards, including record of the year.

There’s also a live version of “Mine” live from The Belasco.

Chemistry was initially released on June 23 via Atlantic Records and debuted at No. 6 on the July 8-dated Billboard 200, spending a total of three weeks on the chart following its release.

BTS launched their decade of success back in 2013 when they debuted with 2 Cool 4 Skool, featuring their first single, “No More Dream.” Since then, they’ve done it all, from releasing solo projects and smashing records (both as a group and in personal endeavors) to going on tour and fulfilling their civic duties.

The group is planning a reunion in 2025, and Jung Kook recently told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that he’s deeply looking forward to it. “Preparing as a solo artist and also working as a solo musician… there were times where I really missed [being in the group],” he admitted. “When I was in the waiting room or standing by  myself on stage or eating with the staff. We were always together for so many years that I felt the void of them not being next to me. You know, I miss them. And I was thinking about them. So I suppose that year could seem far away, but I don’t want to think that way. I think the synergy of BTS in 2025 will be incredible. I am so looking forward to it.”

BTS Monuments: Beyond The Star will be available exclusively on Disney+ starting on Dec. 20, with two new episodes released every Wednesday.

‘Mambo 23’ Takes Juan Luis Guerra Back to No. 1 on Tropical Airplay for First Time in Almost a Decade

Juan Luis Guerra mambos his way to the top of Billboard’s Tropical Airplay chart as “Mambo 23” advances 3-1 to lead the Nov. 25-dated list. The new champ arrives nine years after he last led through “Tus Besos” in 2014, for one week in charge.

“Mambo 23” climbs to No. 1 with a 9% gain in audience impressions, to 4.45 million, earned during the Nov. 10-16 tracking week, according to Luminate. The song, released Sept. 22 via Rimas, is the first single from Guerra’s recently released EP Radio Güira (Nov. 3).

With the new champ, Guerra collects his 12th No. 1 on Tropical Airplay and breaks a tie with India for the eighth-most, a score led by Marc Anthony with 35 champs since the ranking began in 1994. Here’s the scoreboard:

35, Marc Anthony
29, Victor Manuelle
23, Prince Royce
18, Romeo Santos
14, Elvis Crespo
14, Gilberto Santa Rosa
13, Jerry Rivera
12, Juan Luis Guerra 440
11, India

As mentioned, Guerra last landed at the summit with “Tus Besos” in 2014. (He notched seven hits between “Tus Besos” and “Mambo 23,” including six top 10s.) The nine-year span becomes the longest between No. 1s since Don Omar took an equal nine years (and eight months) to dominate Tropical Airplay with the one-week ruler “Dutty Love,” featuring Natti Natasha (April 2012) and “Se Menea,” with Nio García, (Dec. 2021).

“Mambo 23” rules the tropical ranking as it ejects Chayanne’s “Bailando Bachata” from its 14-week domination; along with Manuel Turizo’s “La Bachata,” the third-longest run this decade, both with 14 weeks atop. The pair trail Prince Royce’s “Carita de Inocente” with 29 weeks at No. 1, the most in the 2020’s decade, and Daddy Yankee and Marc Anthony’s “De Vuelta Pa’ La Vuelta” (22 weeks in charge).

Elsewhere, “Mambo 23” lifts 25-21 on the overall Latin Airplay, Guerra’s highest rank since “Muchachita Linda” reached No. 15 in Oct. 2015.
