BLACKPINK Members Split With YG Entertainment for Solo Endeavors

The members of BLACKPINK are closing out the year with some bombshell newsJennie, Jisoo, Rosé and Lisa have split with YG Entertainment for all solo endeavors.

On Friday (Dec. 29), YG issued a statement announcing the decision. “YG recently signed an extension contract for BLACKPINK’s group activities and agreed not to proceed with a separate additional contract for individual activities,” read a translated statement provided to Billboard by representatives for YG Entertainment. “We will do our best to support BLACKPINK’s activities and will cheer for the individual activities of the members with a warm heart.”

Earlier this month (Dec. 6), via a regulatory filing, YG Entertainment confirmed that BLACKPINK had renewed its contract with the company for all group activities. Details regarding the new contracts were not immediately available upon filing.

Just this week (Dec. 24), Jennie shared that she will be launching a new record label and company called OA. A caption of a photoset posted to the official OA Instagram page reads: “OA, which stands for ODD ATELIER, is a space that aims to create new things that attract attention in a different way from what is usual or expected. It is a label founded by artist JENNIE in November 2023.”

To date, all four members of BLACKPINK have begun their respective solo journeys. In 2021, both Rosé and Lisa unleashed their debut solo albums. Rosé’s -R- contained the single “On the Ground,” which debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. US charts — the first song by a Korean solo artist to do so. With her LaLisa album — which housed a pair of Billboard Hot 100 hits in the title track (No. 84) and “Money” (No. 90) — Lisa became the first soloist to win the MTV Video Music Award for best K-pop.

This spring (Mar. 31), Jisoo released Me, her debut single album. The two-track project was led by “Flower,” which reached No. 2 on the Global 200. Although Jennie was the first BLACKPINK member to go solo back in 2018 (her aptly titled “Solo” peaked atop US World Digital Song Sales), she finally made her Hot 100 debut on the chart dated Dec. 30, 2023, with her Idol hit “One of the Girls” alongside The Weeknd & Lily-Rose Depp. In June, Jennie starred in the controversial Weeknd-produced HBO drama The Idol.

BLACKPINK is, to date, the most successful K-pop girl group in U.S. history. In 2023, the group headlined Coachella and wrapped their blockbuster Born Pink World Tour (which helped them take home top K-pop touring artist at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards) in support of their Billboard 200-topping Born Pink album.

Representatives for BLACKPINK did not immediately respond to Billboard’s request for comment.

Lil Uzi Vert Says They Want to Have All Their Tattoos Removed

Lil Uzi Vert has more tattoos than you can count, but there isn’t a single one that brings a smile to the rapper’s face.

In a recent interview, LA Weekly asked Uzi, “What’s your favorite tattoo?” The 28-year-old musician’s reply? “None of them.”

“I’m trying to get them removed,” they deadpanned. “All of them… I want to go corporate.”

It’s not fully clear whether Uzi was joking or being serious about removing the ink, which is known to be an excruciatingly painful procedure even when the tattoos aren’t on your face, hands and everywhere in between. Last month, however, Uzi gave fans a taste of what they might look like without their signature tats. Without giving any explanation, the “XO Tour Llif3” hitmaker shared a selfie with heavy makeup covering all of their facial ink a couple days after Halloween — see it here.

Billboard has reached out to the musician’s reps for clarification.

Uzi’s tattoos are some of their most defining features (for now). In addition to several words and symbols on their face, as well as a detailed portrait of a Japanese Oni mask and samurai helmet that covers their entire chest and back, the “Just Wanna Rock” artist also shares matching tattoos with Kanye West and Steve Lacy. The trio got the phrase “We here forever technically” etched on their arms in August 2022 and posed for a picture together with their new ink.

The rapper is fresh off the release of their new single “Red Moon,” which dropped on Christmas Day along with a music video. “Red moon out now? ??,” Uzi simply wrote on Instagram upon the project’s debut. “Thank you ♥️.”

Barack Obama Shares His Favorite Songs of 2023

Barack Obama is taking the aux. With just three days left of 2023, the former president of the United States revealed which tunes he was grooving to the most over the past year, featuring pop music, country, R&B and more.

The annual list comes on the heels of Obama’s yearly book and movie favorites, which the ex-POTUS shared earlier this week. In 2023, he had exactly 28 tracks on repeat, with highlights including “TQG” by Karol G and Shakira, “I Remember Everything” by Zach Bryan feat. Kacey Musgraves, “Sprinter” by Dave and Central Cee and “America Has a Problem” by Beyoncé feat. Kendrick Lamar.

The A Promised Land author also included Megan Thee Stallion’s “Cobra,” Tyla’s “Water,” Mitski’s “My Love Mine All Mine” and Victoria Monét’s “On My Mama.” “Here are some of my favorite songs from this year,” he wrote on Instagram Friday (Dec. 29). “Let me know if there are any artists or songs I should check out.”

Mr. Obama’s music taste has long been known to be diverse, as documented by his song lists over the past few years. In 2022, he shouted out music from artists such as Lizzo, Rosalía, Ari Lennox, Ethel Cain, Steve Lacy and Omar Apollo. A few — Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Zach Bryan — were featured on both his 2022 and 2023 playlists.

The 44th prez also typically shares his favorite songs of the summer every year, with his seasonal jams of 2023 including Boygenius, Ice Spice, Luke Bryan, Nicki Minaj and Leonard Cohen.

Conan O’Brien Lands First Billboard Chart Appearance, Thanks to New Vinyl Album

Conan O’Brien has already had plenty of success in his career, but now he has one more reason to celebrate: he’s officially a Billboard-charting artist for the first time.

His new limited-edition vinyl release Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend: Quinquennial Celebration debuts at No. 3 on the latest Comedy Albums chart (dated Dec. 30) with 1,000 copies sold in the U.S. in the Dec. 15-21 tracking week, according to Luminate, becoming his first-ever Billboard chart entry.

The album is a compendium to his hit podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. The collection was curated by O’Brien and his trusty co-hosts Matt Gourley and Sona Movsesian in honor of the podcast’s fifth anniversary. According to a press release, the set finds the trio “reflecting on the last five years of recording their hit podcast,” including never-before-heard backstories and original comedy surprises.

SiriusXM, which acquired the podcast and the Team Coco digital media business in May, announced the news of the release on Nov. 7. “This is a historic achievement — listening to a podcast on vinyl will tear a hole in the hipster spacetime continuum,” O’Brien said in a statement. The project was produced by SiriusXM’s Team Coco in collaboration with New England-based comic/music retailer Newbury Comics.

O’Brien launched his Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast in November 2018 after retiring from his Conan late-night show on TBS. In addition to chatting with callers from around the globe on the spin-off Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan, the show has featured a wide variety of guests, including Will Ferrell, Malcolm Gladwell, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Barack and Michelle Obama, Adam Sandler, David Sedaris, Bruce Springsteen, Howard Stern and Neil Young, plus a recent special-event interview with former Nirvana bandmates Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic.

O’Brien, a four-time Primetime Emmy Award winner, hosted NBC’s Late Night With Conan O’Brien from 1993-2009 and The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien from 2009-10. Before that, the Brookline, Mass., native was a writer for Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons.

O’Brien isn’t the first late-night host to chart a song or album on BIllboard. Jimmy Fallon’s Blow Your Pants Off spent three weeks at No. 1 on Comedy Albums in 2012. His album The Bathroom Wall also reached No. 47 on the Billboard 200 in 2002, while his song “Ew!” featuring will.i.am peaked at No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2014 — his new holiday song with Meghan Trainor, “Wrap Me Up” also rises to No. 2 on the current Adult Contemporary chart (dated Dec. 30). Craig Ferguson has charted two entries on Comedy Albums: A Wee Bit O’ Revolution (No. 6 peak in 2009) and I’m Here To Help (No. 6, 2013). Jimmy Kimmel reached No. 27 on Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and No. 83 on the Holiday 100 in 2014, thanks to his featured appearance on the Killers’ holiday song “Joel the Lump of Coal.” Trevor Noah’s African American LP peaked at No. 6 on Comedy Albums in 2015. Arsenio Hall — as alter ego Chunky A — hit No. 26 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and No. 77 on the Hot 100 in 1989 with his novelty rap track “Owww!” His comedy rap album Large and in Charge also reached No. 71 on the Billboard 200 in 1990. And Steve Allen, the inaugural host of The Tonight Show in 1954-57, charted on the Hot 100 in 1963 with his song “Gravy Waltz” (No. 64 peak).

The song, released in June via HBO/XO/Republic Records, debuts at No. 100 with 6 million U.S. streams and 1.5 million radio audience impressions Dec. 15-21, according to Luminate.

While the song earns JENNIE her first solo entry on the Hot 100, she’s made nine trips to the chart as a member of BLACKPINK. Here’s a recap of the group’s history on the ranking, listed by peak position:

BLACKPINK’s Hot 100 Chart Hits:
“Ice Cream,” with Selena Gomez, No. 13 peak, 2020
“Pink Venom,” No. 22, 2022
“Shut Down,” No. 25, 2022
“How You Like That,” No. 33, 2020
“Sour Candy,” with Lady Gaga, No. 33, 2020
“Kill This Love,” No. 41, 2019
“DDU-DU DDU-DU,” No. 55, 2018
“Lovesick Girls,” No. 59, 2020
“Kiss and Make Up,” with Dua Lipa, No. 93, 2018

BLACKPINK has also charted four albums on the Billboard 200, including two top 10s: The Album (No. 2 peak in 2020) and Born Pink (No. 1, 2022).

Outside of BLACKPINK, JENNIE has charted two other solo songs on Billboard’s charts. “Solo” spent a week at No. 1 on the World Digital Song Sales chart in 2018 and “You & Me” crowned Billboard Global Excl. U.S. for week this October. The latter also peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Global 200.

As for Lily-Rose Depp, “One of the Girls” became her first overall chart hit in July when it debuted at No. 14 on the Hot R&B Songs chart—it now ranks at No. 7 on the latest list, after reaching No. 6.

The song is featured in the fourth episode of The Idol and was released after the episode premiered June 23. Depp starred in the series as the Jocelyn, an up-and-coming pop star, while The Weeknd (credited under his real name, Abel Tesfaye) starred as Tedros, a nightclub owner and talent scout. JENNIE portrayed Dyanne, a backup dancer and friend of Jocelyn. The series aired five episodes on HBO and Max this June and July and was canceled in August after one season.

Despite the show’s cancellation, the song has continued to surge thanks in part to growing popularity on TikTok. The track has soundtracked over 80,000 clips on the platform, while another version has been used in over 90,000. On Dec. 8, the trio released four additional mixes of the song: sped-up, slowed, instrumental and a cappella versions.

Prior to starring in The Idol, Depp starred in the films The King, Silent Night and Voyagers, among others. This isn’t her first foray into music; she sang three songs for the soundtrack of the 2016 Kevin Smith comedy-horror film Yoga Hosers, in which she starred with Harley Quinn Smith. Depp’s parents – Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis – also star in the movie.

Hot 100 First-Timers: George Birge’s ‘Mind on You’ Debuts Amid Country Chart Climb

After scaling Billboard‘s charts for over a year, George Birge’s breakthrough single “Mind on You” finally arrives on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song, released in 2021 on RECORDS Nashville, debuts at No. 88 on the Dec. 30-dated Hot 100 with 31.6 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 14%) and 1.1 million U.S. streams in the Dec. 15-21 tracking week, according to Luminate.

“Mind on You” first reached Billboard’s charts on Aug. 13, 2022, when it debuted at No. 56 on Country Airplay. The song is still climbing in its 56th week on the survey, reaching a new No. 3 high on the latest chart. It also rises 20-19 on the all-format Radio Songs chart. The song is Birge’s first solo chart entry to date.

The track appears on Birge’s debut full-length studio album, George Birge: Mind On You, released in May. Recent gains can partly be attributed to a new remix featuring Kidd G and charlieonnafriday, released Dec. 15.

Birge was previously a member of country duo Waterloo Revival, alongside Cody Cooper. The pair was signed to Big Machine Records and Toby Keith’s Show Dog Nashville and was active in 2013-21. It released two EPs in that span: Little Lightning in 2013 and Front Row in 2016. The tandem also charted two songs on Country Airplay in 2015: “Hit the Road” (No. 51 peak) and “Bad for You” (No. 52).

Birge, from Austin, Texas, will be a supporting act on Parker McCollum’s forthcoming tour beginning in February. He previously opened for Brantley Gilbert, Scotty McCreery and Jake Owen, among others.

Hot 100 First-Timers: The Red Clay Strays Arrive With Viral Single ‘Wondering Why’

The Red Clay Strays are officially Billboard Hot 100-charting artists, thanks to the group’s breakthrough single “Wondering Why.”

The song, which the band self-released in 2022 ahead of its debut full-length LP Moment of Truth (released that April), debuts on the Dec. 30-dated ranking at No. 93, becoming its first entry on the chart. It enters with 5.7 million U.S. streams (up 5%), 418,000 radio airplay audience impressions and 1,000 downloads sold in the Dec. 15-21 tracking week, according to Luminate.

The song has also become a hit on several other Billboard charts. It holds at its highs on Hot Rock Songs (No. 7) and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs (No. 10) and rises 19-18 on Hot Country Songs. Radio-wise, it jumps 33-26 in its second week on Adult Alternative Airplay.

Recent gains for the song can be partially attributed to TikTok, where it has soundtracked over 60,000 clips on the platform to date. One video on the group’s profile, posted Dec. 1, has garnered over 500,000 views. Another — of the group performing a live version that was posted on the @_realcountrymusic account on Sept. 3 — has generated nearly 2 million views. The song’s newfound popularity has also resulted in many singers posting their own covers of the track on the platform.

The Red Clays Strays, from Mobile, Ala., are new to Billboard’s charts. “Wondering Why” became their first overall chart entry when it debuted on two rock tallies in November.

The band is currently on the road on its headlining The Way Too Long Tour, which runs through March 2024. The act has previously opened for Dierks Bentley, Brothers Osborne, Eric Church, Elle King and Old Crow Medicine Show, among others. In May, the group made its debut at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. The quintet comprises Brandon Coleman (lead vocals/guitar), Drew Nix (vocals/electric guitar/harmonica), Zach Rishel (electric guitar), Andrew Bishop (bass) and John Hall (drums).

Taylor Swift Has the Top Four on the Album Sales Chart for the First Time

Taylor Swift dominates Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated Dec. 30), as she holds the entire top four titles. That marks the first time any act has claimed the entire top four at the same time, since the chart bowed in May of 1991. For good measure, Swift has five of the top six titles, and six out of the top 10, as her titles populate Nos. 1-4, 6 and 10. Swift tops the list with 1989 (Taylor’s Version), which rises 2-1 for a third nonconsecutive week on top.

Swift leads a busy Top Album Sales chart, as the latest tally reflects the tracking week of Dec. 15-21 — capturing pre-Christmas Day shopping activity. Many titles see increases thanks to general holiday purchases, retailer promotions and sale pricing. On the 50-position chart, of the 49 non-debuts, a total of 44 titles boast weekly sales gains. Only five titles see weekly declines.

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

The Swift parade in the top 10 of the chart is led by 1989 (Taylor’s Version), which climbs 2-1 for its third nonconsecutive week at No. 1 (95,000 copies sold; up 47%). Swift’s Midnights rises 5-2 (43,000; up 79%), Lover ascends 8-3 (30,000; up 55%) and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) steps 6-4 (29,000; up 32%). The latter three are also former No. 1s.

Swift is also found in the top 10 at No. 6 with her chart-topping Folklore (falling two spots with 25,000; though up 4%) and at No. 10 with former leader Fearless (Taylor’s Version) (up from No. 16 with 19,000; up 70%).

Rounding out the non-Swift titles in the top 10 are these former No. 1s: Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts (9-5 with 26,000; up 37%), Stray KidsROCK-STAR (holding at No. 7 with 24,000; up 20%), ATEEZ’s The World EP.Fin: Will (down 3-8 with 22,000; down 29%) and Dolly Parton’s Rockstar (10-9 with 19,000; up 8%).

In the week ending Dec. 21, there were 3.553 million albums sold in the U.S. (up 15.6% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 3.219 million (up 18.7%) and digital albums comprised 334,000 (down 7.6%).

There were 1.150 million CD albums sold in the week ending Dec. 21 (up 8.7% week-over-week) and 2.055 million vinyl albums sold (up 25.3%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 36.072 million (up 2.8% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 48.203 million (up 15.1%).

Overall year-to-date album sales total 102.809 million (up 5.6% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 84.823 million (up 9.4%) and digital album sales total 17.986 million (down 9.3%).

Gen Hoshino Talks New ‘SPY x FAMILY CODE: White’ Ending Theme ‘Why’: Interview

SPY x FAMILY CODE: White, an animated film featuring the beloved characters of the popular manga and anime series, has quickly become a box office smash in Japan after hitting theaters Dec. 22. Japanese hitmaker Gen Hoshino wrote the ending theme for this movie, as he did for the TV series, and this new song “Why” is the title track of his latest single.

The 42-year-old artist’s new project also features “Life” — the theme song for this year’s World Athletics Championships and the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China — as the other title track, and includes “Odd Couple” a song written for the popular Japanese comedy duo Audrey for their event at Tokyo Dome, and the instrumental track “Beyond the Sequence” featured in a TV commercial that he appears in. The J-pop superstar sat down with Billboard Japan and looked back on his headspace in 2023 while breaking down the production process of the tracks on this new single.

“Why” is the ending theme song for SPY x FAMILY CODE: White. How did you feel when you were tapped to write this song?

Gen Hoshino: First, I thought it was interesting that the ending theme would be revealed on the day of the movie’s release. I wrote “Comedy” (the ending theme for SPY x FAMILY Season 1) with the sound of 2000s hip-hop in mind, so when I was asked to do the theme for the movie, I wanted to make sure that the feel of the music was connected at the base. For “Why,” I went further back and combined the R&B/hip-hop beats of the early ’90s with the R&B medium ballads of the late ’80s as the track’s soundscape.

R&B and hip-hop from the late ’80s to early ’90s comprise your musical roots, don’t they?

They’re the music of my youth, to be exact. Oh, but I guess the late ’80s could be considered part of my roots. A lot of the songs featured as anime themes that I listened to growing up were heavily influenced by Western music, and I wanted to do something like that now. Take “Romantic Ageruyo” from Dragon Ball as an example. The opener is energetic and easy for kids to understand, but out of nowhere the ending theme is a grownup love song that suddenly throws you off. But that wistfulness stays with you and when you grow up, you get what the lyrics are saying. That sort of thing.

I grew up on jazz and R&B music of the same era because my parents liked to listen to them, so they’re stuck in my mind as the same kind of music. A lot of hip-hop tracks from the ‘90s sample R&B from the ’80s, and I wanted to make a song with that kind of connection in mind. That was how “Why” first came about.

The lyrics to “Why” lay out the premise that “people eventually disappear,” and ask the question of “why we still try to create more memories.” Could you elaborate on this theme?

The soundscape is a throwback to the ‘80s and ‘90s, and in the lyrics I decided to depict what happens after “Comedy” which was sonically inspired by the 2000s. Since the movie is about a trip, I actually went on a trip myself. I went to Kanazawa alone, and felt like I gained many things from the time I spent at the D.T. Suzuki Museum, and the time I spent walking around the city.

I was feeling pretty depressed this year. I didn’t feel any hope or have positive feelings at all. When I think about it, I think it might have been kind of a backlash, a reaction to the three years of the pandemic and how I’d worked so hard during that time.

Restrictions stemming from the pandemic have been lifted this year, so maybe the mental fatigue of the past three years set in.

I was in a state of “nothingness,” and no matter what I wrote, it didn’t feel right. After my trip to Kanazawa, I decided to write a song without thinking about the tie-in, and the first thing that came to me was the A-melo (first verse) of “Why.” That really felt right, and from that point on, my current situation — my own troubles and trials, the things I wanted to overcome — linked to the movie. People die eventually, and if you think about it on the level of thousands or tens of thousands of years, human society will surely collapse. When you consider it that way, it doesn’t matter what anyone leaves behind or what they do, it’s all meaningless. But why was I so moved by the sunset I saw in Kanazawa? Why did I find the ripples of water at the D.T. Suzuki Museum interesting? Why do people take pictures to preserve their memories when they travel? These thoughts led to the characters of SPY x FAMILY, three people and a dog, who each have their own traumas, being together as a family.

“Life” feels like it has the power to uplift the listener’s mind and body, and I also felt a connection with “Why.”

I didn’t intend to connect them at all, actually. [Laughs] I thought the lyrics to “Why” would be more light-hearted, but a lot of thoughts went in as I was writing it. I wasn’t originally planning to release these two songs as a single, so they just happened to connect when I completed them.

Music-wise, I heard you had gospel in mind. The song contains the fundamental power of human performance and singing, like the raw sounds of the drums and saxophone.

Sounds with physicality come across in a direct way. That, and I also really like music programming and editing. Up until my early thirties, I was more interested in physicality and used to think that it’s better to have people (performing the music), even with mistakes and errors. I started being drawn to programming and synthesizers later on. There’s definitely an energy that comes out of programmed music. For the drums, Shun Ishiwaka played what I’d programmed. There’s something moving about a human performance that tries to imitate and outdo machines. It’s a mixture of human and machine-like qualities.

The footage from your “so sad so happy” Curated by Gen Hoshino at SUMMER SONIC BEACH STAGE from this year’s SUMMER SONIC music festival will be streamed on the Amazon Music Japan channel on Twitch. Jacob Collier, Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest), Camilo and UMI performed at the event. Looking back now, what are you thought on this project?

The first half of this year, I spent all of my days at home doing stuff like write songs, then suddenly I was outside and it was crazy hot. [Laughs] I managed to get through it, and it’s a great memory of this summer. I couldn’t be more grateful to be able to do whatever I wanted on one of the stages at SUMMER SONIC. I’d met everyone before except for Camilo. I invited my friends, so the day’s performances were linked in that sense, and it must have looked different from a typical festival. And they all gave great performances, so that was really moving.
