FKA Twigs ‘Calvins or Nothing’ Calvin Klein Ad Ban Partially Reversed

A British advertising standards authority has partially reversed a controversial decision banning a Calvin Klein advertisement featuring singer/dancer FKA Twigs. According to the BBC, after the performer criticized the Advertising Standards Authority for “double standards” in claiming the image of the partially nude artist presented her as a “stereotypical sexual object,” the agency announced that it had rolled back portions of the ban.

The statement from the ASA said that after a review the agency reversed the original decision, concluding that the image was not sexually explicit. In January, the ASA blocked the ad because, it said at the time, it “placed viewers focus on the model’s body rather than on the clothing being advertised.”

Trending on Billboard

Though the ASA walked back the total embargo, it remains banned from display in places where children might see it. The BBC reported that the ASA launched an investigation into the ad in response to two complaints about the poster, in which FKA Twigs posed wearing a shirt that only partially covered her body, exposing the side of one buttock and a small portion of one breast with the tagline “Calvins or nothing.”

The original ban came around the time when a viral CK underwear ad featuring The Bear star Jeremy Allen White drew worldwide attention for a nearly nude image of the actor in just a pair of tight white briefs. The BBC also reported at the time that the ASA said it had received three complaints about the Jeremy Allen White adds, one related to a magazine ad and two about a TV version, though those ads did not appear to be the subject of any restrictions.

At the time of the original ban, Twigs railed against what she said was a double-standard. “i do not see the ‘stereotypical sexual object’ that they have labelled me,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “i see a beautiful strong woman of colour whose incredible body has overcome more pain than you can imagine.”

She continued, “in light of reviewing other campaigns past and current of this nature, i can’t help but feel there are some double standards here,” in the post that featured the banned black-and-white photo. “i am proud of my physicality and hold the art i create with my vessel to the standards of women like josephine baker, eartha kitt and grace jones who broke down barriers of what it looks like to be empowered and harness a unique embodied sensuality.”

Kacey Musgraves Discusses Recording ‘Deeper Well’ at Electric Lady Studios: ‘Every Studio Has Its Own Energy’

Kacey Musgraves is taking fans farther into her Deeper Well.

Musgraves’ has an upcoming interview on Sunday TODAY With Willie Geist, and Billboard has an exclusive clip of the conversation. The chat took place at New York City’s iconic Electric Lady Studios, where Musgraves recorded her upcoming album, Deeper Well, out March 15 via Interscope Records/MCA Nashville.

Electric Lady Studios, in Greenwich Village, was commissioned by Jimi Hendrix in 1968. Though Hendrix spent only 10 weeks recording in the studio prior to his death in 1970, the studio has gone on to become a beloved creative and recording oasis for artists including Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Billy Idol, Questlove, Adele, Keith Richards, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift.

“This was the studio that we kind of inhabited for the few months that we spent working on this,” Musgraves tells Geist in the exclusive clip. “It was truly an amazing experience.”

Musgraves says of drawing inspiration from Electric Lady Studios, “Every studio has its own energy, but this one has such a storied past. This building — and it literally being Jimi Hendrix’s apartment — right here, that’s some seriously good mojo. I just know so many amazing creatives are drawn to creating here, and there’s a reason.

Geist comments that the colorful murals on the studio walls are from when Hendrix had the studio created, while Musgraves noted, “I don’t think it’s been touched. I think it’s pretty original … He commissioned these, which they still look amazing. They still look space-agey.”

She also discusses the studio’s location in the heart of Greenwich Village. “As you know there’s such a rich folk-music history, songwriter history, poets, activism — all of that happened here,” Musgraves said. “I was very drawn to getting out of Nashville and creating somewhere where there was a different energy, a different life kind of bubbling around you. I just think New York is one of the most unique cities in the world. It’s inspiring for sure.”

Musgraves recently released the album’s title track, and performed both “Deeper Well” and “Too Good to Be True” during an appearance on Saturday Night Live.

Annie Lennox, Jackson Browne & More Sign Open Letter Warning of Nuclear Threat Ahead of Expected ‘Oppenheimer’ Oscar Sweep

In the run-up to the Oscars on Sunday (March 10), a coalition of actors, musicians and activists will issue an open letter to Hollywood on the significance of Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer and the real-life threats of nuclear war.

The coalition includes members of Oppenheimer‘s cast and crew, as well as such bold-faced names as Annie Lennox, Graham Nash, Jackson Browne, Emma Thompson, Jane Fonda, Julianne Moore, Lily Tomlin, Michael Douglas, Rosanna Arquette and Viggo Mortensen. J. Robert Oppenheimer’s grandson, activist Charles Oppenheimer, also joined this call-to-action. The letter will be posted on MakeNukesHistory.org Wednesday (March 6), and will be printed in a full page ad in Thursday’s Los Angeles Times

Under the headline “An Open Letter to Hollywood on Oppenheimer and Nuclear War,” the ad says, in part:

Trending on Billboard

“Oppenheimer depicts the origin story of nuclear weapons, the history of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Oppenheimer’s subsequent warnings against an arms race and the development of even more powerful weapons. Oppenheimer was right to warn us.

“Today, 13,000 nuclear weapons are held by nine countries. Some are 80 times more powerful than the ones that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

“As artists and advocates, we want to raise our voices to remind people that while Oppenheimer is history, nuclear weapons are not.

“At a time of great uncertainty, even one nuclear weapon — on land, under the sea, in the air, or in space — is too many. To protect our families, our communities, and our world, we must demand that global leaders work to make nuclear weapons history — and build a brighter future. Please join us — before our luck runs out.”

This is part of a multipronged “Make Nukes History” campaign launching this week, leveraging the attention on Oppenheimer to elevate the conversation about the nuclear threat.

This week, billboards, murals and wheatpastes are popping up around Hollywood, calling attention to the risks of nukes. In the coming days, there will be an art installation at the Original Farmers Market near The Grove in Los Angeles. Backed by the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit, the campaign aims to raise awareness about the risks posed by today’s nuclear arsenals.

The campaign is taking place across Los Angeles and includes, in addition to billboards, a mural in West Hollywood and more than 1,000 street posters, proclaiming “Oppenheimer Started It, We Can End It” and “13 Oppenheimer Nominations; 13,000 Nuclear Weapons.”

For more information on the campaign and to read the open letter, visit MakeNukesHistory.org

Some of these signees to the open letter have been anti-nuclear activists for decades. Nash and Browne were among the organizers of No Nukes/The MUSE Concerts for a Non-Nuclear Future, which were held in September 1979 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Fonda also participated in that event. A triple-disk live album from the concerts was released in late 1979 and made the top 20 on the Billboard 200.

Douglas and Fonda starred in the 1979 thriller The China Syndrome, about a fictional accident at a nuclear power plant. The film, which Douglas produced, was released theatrically on March 16, 1979, 12 days before the Three Mile Island nuclear accident proved that the film’s premise was not far-fetched.

Camila Cabello Is ‘Seeing Stars’ in Breezy Single Tease

Camila Cabello is teasing new music to go with her new hairstyle. The singer who recently debuted a complete hair makeover from brunette to bright blonde posted a 30-second clip of what appears to be her upcoming untitled single on Tuesday night (March 5), accompanied by the caption “coming soon(er than you think).”

In the brief clip, Cabello is riding in the passenger seat of a car, her blonde tresses whipped by the wind, as she sings an exuberant, summery pop ditty. “I’m seeing stars/ Oh my God/ I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it,” she joyfully exhales in her breathy voice, adding, “I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it,” while making a hand heart.

Many more “I love it”‘s follow, as Cabello hits seductive poses in the moving vehicle while wearing a light blue tank top and black satin pants. At press time there was no additional information on the single or Cabello’s follow-up to her 2022 album Familia, which featured her No. 21-charting Billboard Hot 100 hit “Bam Bam.”

Just before New Year’s, Cabello wrote on Instagram Stories that 2023 had been “mostly the year of this” over a picture of what appeared to be her recording vocals in front of a microphone. “see you next year b-tches,” she added alongside a mouth-zipped-shut emoji. She also posted a carousel of photos from a recording studio at the time, featuring her posing in front of a soundboard. “is it butterflies or acid reflux ?”

The single tease of the former Fifth Harmony member’s next solo era came a few days after Cabello celebrated her 27th birthday on Sunday by posting a series of bikini pics, including one in which she ate a cupcake in bed while wearing a tiara.

Shania Twain on Becoming a Barbie Doll and How She Became Confident in Her Own Skin: ‘I Was Very Self-Conscious Before That’

Shania Twain has been a role model to her fans for nearly 30 years — but now Barbie has made it official.

The musical superstar is a 2024 Barbie role model, selected by Mattel to receive her own one-of-a-kind Barbie doll to honor her work breaking down barriers and inspiring women to accomplish their dreams. Not available at retail, Mattel has been creating the one-of-a-kind Barbies annually since 2018 in conjunction with March 8’s International Women’s Day. Also among the eight honorees this year are actresses Helen Mirren and Viola Davis, as well as pop icon Kylie Minogue.

The role models are part of Barbie’s 65th anniversary, to be celebrated on Mar. 9, which also includes introducing a retail collection that celebrates the most popular Barbie career dolls over the past 65 years, and bows new dolls inspired by classic Barbie looks.

Twain, speaking from Los Angeles via Zoom with her Barbie by her side, says she was so flattered to be selected: “I take being a role model, seriously because I know the impact one can have on somebody else’s life can be negative or positive. I choose to aim for the positive.”

Trending on Billboard

But that doesn’t mean sugarcoating things, the country legend stresses. “I want to make people feel good and happy, even if that means sometimes sharing difficult or unhappy things about my own life to make others feel that they’re not alone,” she says. Key to being a role model is also Twain’s belief in self-empowerment, “because those times when you feel alone or are genuinely alone, you’ve got yourself — so you better know how to self-empower. It’s such an important vital tool and skill to have.”

Her Barbie sports Twain’s signature top hat, long black coat and thigh high boots from 1999’s classic “Man! I Look Like a Woman!” video. Twain picked that era, because of the message she felt the song and the look imparted. “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” is “a fun party song” for a lot of people, she says, but there’s a deeper meaning behind the tune.

“That is the joy of getting in touch with your self courage, and saying, ‘I’m not afraid to be myself.’ That’s why I wrote the song in the first place,” she explains. “I was really starting to come into my own, not as a confident female, but I was just starting to feel confident in my female body. I was very self-conscious before that in all of my youth.”

The video was a way of embracing her femininity and her strength. “I’m going, ‘OK, I have a lot to say. I want to be taken seriously. But I’m also a woman and I have curves and I don’t want to have to hide behind them,” she continues. “I want to enjoy fashion as a woman. I want to be able to dress up. I wasn’t thinking Barbie — I couldn’t have imagined that — but it’s such a perfect fit, because it’s a manifestation of dreams and imagination.”

Her Barbie comes with a modern update that meant the world to her, the singer says, as she removes the hat to reveal cascading pink hair she sometimes sported during last year’s The Queen of Me tour— as opposed to the brunette locks in the video.

“The video and styling for ‘Man! I Feel Like a Woman!’ was all about peeling off layers and the structure and letting lose and sharing what is also underneath all of that. On The Queen of Me tour, I went crazy with all the hair on the tour,” she says. She praises Barbie team for combining the old and new. “They allowed my new contemporary take on myself to enter the world of Barbie and I just am really flattered by that,” she says.

More than 25 years since the video’s release, Twain sees shared themes between the “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” clip and this summer’s Barbie movie. “What I love most about [the movie], which is also what I did with the song and video, was, ‘OK, let’s not diminish the aesthetics. Let’s be true to our Barbie beauty, our beauty aesthetics, the attention to detail in all its Barbie glory and still say something meaningful.’”

Twain returns to her Come On Over residency at Planet Hollywood’s Bakkt Theater in Las Vegas on May 10. It follows the Queen of Me tour, which grossed more than $110 million dollars and was the fifth biggest country tour of 2023, according to Billboard Boxscore.

Doobie Brothers’ 50th Anniversary Reunion Tour Spawns New Album With ‘Some Ferocious Tracks’

The Doobie Brothers‘ 50th anniversary reunion, which is heading into its third year of touring, is yielding some new music as well.

Co-founders Patrick Simmons and Tom Johnston tell Billboard they’re both stoked about the band’s next album, which it’s finishing work on with Michael McDonald. The singer/keyboardist was with the Doobies from 1975-1982 and has been back in the fold since anniversary tour was first announced in 2019 and then delayed by the pandemic.

Produced by John Shanks — who also handled 2021’s Liberte, the band’s first set of new material in 11 years — it will be the Doobies’ first album with McDonald since One Step Closer in 1980 and the first Doobies album to include McDonald, guitarists Patrick Simmons and Tom Johnston since Takin’ It to the Streets in 1975. McDonald also sang backing vocals on the Doobies’ 2014 album Southbound

“We probably kicked (a new album) around a little bit, but not a lot,” Johnston says. “Those things just start. They just sorta happen. This whole band has been like that; things just happen through the years — songs, albums.”

Trending on Billboard

Simmons, the lone Doobie Brother to be part of the band’s entire 54-year career, shared the news with fans via a social media post.  “It’s very exciting,” he tells Billboard. “At one point I said, ‘Hey, we’re doing all these dates… As long as we’re doing this it would make sense to do a record. I think people would really get a kick out of that.’” With a chuckle he adds that, “We have yet to find out whether they’ll get a kick out of it or whether we’ll get kicked for it.”

The latter is unlikely, of course. McDonald’s tenure with the band — coming after he worked with Steely Dan — was among its most successful. Brought in to help the Doobies while Johnston was suffering burn-out, McDonald contributed hits such as “Takin’ It to the Streets,” “It Keeps You Runnin’,” “You Belong to Me” (co-written with Carly Simon) and “Real Love.” The triple-platinum Minute By Minute album in 1978, meanwhile, was the Doobies’ sole No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and won three Grammy Awards including Record of the Year for the hit “What a Fool Believes.”

Simmons says he’s particularly happy to have himself, Johnston and McDonald — as well as fourth Doobies principal guitarist John McFee — fully engaged together on the new album. “It’s nice that Tom has an opportunity to interact with Mike musically because they have so much in common as far as their love of R&B and the people they admire,” he explains. “They never really got a chance to interact in this way before, so it makes me happy to see that happening. It’s more than the sum of our parts, I think.”

Each of the main Doobies, collaborating with Shanks, have contributed several songs to the set, which has no announced title and release date yet — although Simmons says the goal is to finish recording before the summer tour begins June 15 in Seattle. “I would put it half, maybe 60 percent where we’re at now as far as completion,” Simmons says. “The songs are done. The arrangements are pretty close.”

He’s particularly stoked about a gospel-flavored track called “Walk This Road” that features lead vocals by both McDonald and Johnston as well as guest Mavis Staples. “John Shanks had assumed I knew Mavis was singing on it, and I had no idea,” Simmons says with a laugh. “I hear this voice and I’m going, ‘What the…? Tommy is really killing it;’ it didn’t’ really sound like him but he has that quality to his voice. But it was Mavis, and… the three of them singing, I’m telling ya it just floored me. And there’s a bunch of other great tracks, just some killer — for me, anyway — great songs on this record, some ferocious tracks.”

Johnston, meanwhile, predicts that, “This one’s probably a little moreso diverse because Michael is involved in all the tunes, but that’s fine, man. It’s an extension of what we’re doing on the road.”

In addition to the album, McDonald is publishing What a Fool Believes: A Memoir, co-written with Paul Reiser, on May 21. He also contributed to 2022’s Long Train Runnin’: Our Story of the Doobie Brothers, which Simmons and Johnston helmed.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Simmons says of the continuing Doobies reunion. “We’re having a good time. It’s kind of continuing what we’ve been doing for the last 50 years and we still do things the same way for the most part, but having Mike on board again is great. I think it’s just having great artists, great creative people and talented guys that write the material… and then we have a great band. We’ve always had really great musicians, great singers. I think that really helps with how people perceive the band at any given time. It’s as strong now as it ever was.”

Siblings Angela and Leonardo Aguilar Score First No. 1 on Latin Airplay With Becky G Collab ‘Por El Contrario’

The track, released via Kemosabe/RCA/Sony Music Latin, is one of 13 songs from Becky G’s Esquinas album, which debuted and peaked at No. 7 on Top Latin Albums in Oct. 2023. (The tune is credited to Becky G with Leonardo Aguilar and Angela Aguilar.)

Trending on Billboard

In the tracking week of Feb. 23-29, “Por El Contrario” logged 9.3 million audience impressions, a 44% gain from the week prior, according to Luminate. The sum sends Karol G and Peso Pluma’s “Qlona” to No. 2 after one week in charge (with an 11% dip in impressions, to 8.5 million).

As “Contrario” lands at the summit on the overall Latin Airplay ranking, Becky G captures her sixth champ there among 22 showings. It arrives after over two years of her last ruler, “Bailé Con Mi Ex,” for one week atop in Sept. 2022.

“Contrario” becomes Angela Aguilar’s best showing on Latin Airplay, overtaking the No. 3 peak of “Que Agonía,” with Yuridia (chart dated March 4).

Leonardo, meanwhile, nabs his first champ with first visit on the overall radio list.

The tripartite collab concurrently gifts Becky G and Leonardo their first No. 1 on Regional Mexican Airplay, where the song rises from No. 5 to become the Greatest Gainer of the week. Angela adds a third career No. 1 there, after the five-week ruler “Dime Como Quieres,” with Christian Nodal (2021) and “Ahí Donde Me Ven” (one week in charge, 2022).

Jamie Foxx Ready to Talk About Health Scare ‘In a Funny Way’ On Stage

It’s been nearly a year since Jamie Foxx was hospitalized with an undisclosed “medical complication.” And while the singer/actor has been mostly off the radar since then, on Sunday Foxx, 56, told the audience at the African American Film Critic’s Association Special Achievement Awards luncheon that he is finally ready to open up about the health scare that he’s previously described as a situation he wasn’t sure he was “gonna make it through.”

According to Variety, while accepting the AAFCA’s Producers Award the Oscar and Grammy-winner Foxx promised that he will finally open up about the mystery ailment, with his signature wit and on his schedule.

“Everybody wants to know what happened, and I’m going to tell you what happened. But I’ve gotta do it in my way,” Foxx told the audience. “I’m gonna do it in a funny way. We’re gonna be on the stage. We’re gonna get back to the standup sort of roots.” Foxx teased that the show would be called “What Had Happened Was” and that it will feature “all the things that happened, especially on our side of our community.”

The latter was reportedly a joke about the online rumors of phony post-hospitalization “Jamie Foxx” sightings. “I dove out of a car to save this Black woman’s purse,” he joked. “That ain’t no damn Jamie, that’s a clone.” That last one, by the way, was true, according to Variety.

Last July, Foxx posted an emotional video giving an update on his recovery after his April 2023 hospitalization. “I went through something that I thought I would never, ever go through. I know a lot of people were waiting or wanting to hear updates, but to be honest with you, I just didn’t want you to see me like that,” Foxx said. “I want you to see me laughing, having a good time partying, cracking a joke, doing a movie, television show. I didn’t want you to see me with tubes running out of me and trying to figure out if I was gonna make it through.”

Foxx’s daughter, Corinne Foxx, announced on April 12 that her dad had been hospitalized for an undisclosed “medical complication” while filming the Netflix movie Back in Action in Atlanta; to date the actor has not provided any additional information about his illness or recovery.

In January, Foxx re-joined Cameron Diaz on the set of the film Back in Action and is getting ready to re-team with his daughter on Fox’s Beat Shazam game show.

“I’m so thankful. And I just get emotional. Because it was really… it’s beyond the scope. Cherish life,” Foxx said on Sunday. “I have some people in my life that really made sure I was here because it was dire straits,” Foxx said, then joking about his daughter thinks he’s a bit too thankful for some things these days. “I was drinking some water, like ‘Wow, you taste this water? It’s so wet. This is the wettest water’ [and she replied,] ‘Dad, you’ve gotta chill out.’”

Jisoo Is the First Musician to Be the Face of This London Fashion House: See the Photos

Adding to an arsenal of fashion partnerships such as Dior and Cartier, Jisoo is the new face of Self-Portrait, marking several firsts for the BLACKPINK superstar and the London-based fashion house.

Following previous Self-Portrait muses such as Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Gigi Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, Irina Shayk, Bella Hadid, Kate Moss and Phoebe Dynevor, the news not only marks the brand’s first time having a musician front the accessible line since its 2013 founding, but also serves as Jisoo’s first contemporary fashion campaign following the February announcement of her own label and agency, Blissoo.

Billboard has a look at the Spring/Summer 2024 collection, including an exclusive photo of Jisoo in a blue dress from the campaign. Captured in South Korea by photographer Yoon JiYong (who shot the artwork for Jisoo’s ME solo album, her 2023 ELLE Korea cover, as well as lensed her bandmates Rosé, Lisa and other top K-pop stars), Self-Portrait founder and creative director Han Chong describes Jisoo’s campaign in a press release as showcasing “her beauty, both inside and out, to be front and center of this first series of portraits we shot together in Seoul.”

Chong notes that the collaboration is a natural step after first connecting with Jisoo around BLACKPINK’s debut in 2016.

“We first started dressing Jisoo over seven years ago, sparking a relationship that we hope will continue for many more years to come,” he tells Billboard. “Aside from the pieces she has worn on and off stage, my favorite moment has to be when we were together on set for this shoot — Jisoo gravitated towards her favorite pieces immediately, and so we let her choose what she wanted to wear for the campaign. It needed to feel real and authentic to where Jisoo is in her life right now, and for me, knowing that she felt like the best version of herself brought me such satisfaction and joy.”

Citing Jisoo’s “Flower” and BLACKPINK’s “Pink Venom” and “Shut Down” as favorites, Chong adds that the goal is “wanting to capture Jisoo in an honest and authentic way — it’s our take on modern portraiture. She is evolving into her next chapter as an independent artist, and there is something so empowering about that. I hoped to shine a light on Jisoo on this important moment in her life and career.”

Chong says Jisoo’s indie move — which includes a renewed contract for BLACKPINK under YG Entertainment — influenced the timing to officially team with Jisoo for the accessibly priced fashion line, which has been worn by musicians including Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Rosalía, Olivia Rodrigo and BLACKPINK.

“When it comes to our campaign casting, I’m always inspired by women who inspire our audience and women who are truly themselves,” says the Penang, Malaysia–born creative. “It’s something which has become a constant thread running through our campaigns. We then look to tailor each campaign or creative to the face of that moment, making it a celebration of the personality which we hope shines through in the images. With Jisoo, I was really interested in where she is on her journey, stepping into solo projects and celebrating her transition into independence. The first set of images captured through a series of portraits bring to life her journey into womanhood.”

The items Jisoo showcases — including the pale-pink sequin minidress with black trim, the orange and pink rhinestone embellished minidress and the blue minidress with the very appropriate flower embellishments — are all available online, in Self-Portrait stores globally and through its international network of retailers as part of the new collection.
