It’s her first Hot 100 No. 1 since — hey! — “Wrecking Ball” back in 2013, and on the latest Billboard Pop Shop Podcast, Katie & Keith are talking all about why the self-love anthem, the lead single from Cyrus’ upcoming eighth album Endless Summer Vacation, is the pop star’s biggest hit in a decade.
But wait, there’s more! It’s been a very active week in pop music, between Beyoncé playing a 75-minute private party in Dubai on Saturday night — where she duetted with daughter Blue Ivy on “Brown Skin Girl” and covered Etta James’ “At Last” — plus Rihanna scoring her first Oscar nomination (best original song for co-writing “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and Lady Gaga picking up her fourth (for “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick).

Miley Cyrus took to social media on Tuesday (Jan. 24) to react to her new song “Flowers” debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and beyond.
“Thankful that Flowers is Number 1 around the world,” she tweeted above a behind-the-scenes snippet from the set of the single’s music video. “This song is dedicated to my fans & the steadfast self love I wish for each of you. Forever grateful, Miley.”
“Flowers” launched at No. 1 on this week’s Hot 100 (chart dated Jan. 27), as well as on the Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts. The anthem is Cyrus’ second track to top the all-genre Hot 100 after “Wrecking Ball” spent three weeks at No. 1 back in 2013. It will appear as the lead single from Endless Summer Vacation, Cyrus’ upcoming eighth studio album, when it drops March 10 via Columbia Records.
To coincide with the chart-topping debut, Billboard broke down five reasons why the self-love groove has become the Hannah Montana star’s biggest hit in nearly a decade — from its close proximity to her latest New Year’s Eve special on NBC and finding in-demand hitmakers like Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson in the song’s credits to its explosion on TikTok and the litany of fan theories about the track’s lyrics being about her relationship with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.
The song, which broke Spotify’s single-week streaming record after its Jan. 12 rollout, has also found a number of famous fans with its independent message, including Gloria Gaynor, Diane Keaton, Kerry Washington and more.

Miley Cyrus broke the Spotify record for the most-streamed song in a single week thanks to her latest hit “Flowers,” her ode to loving and taking care of herself.
In addition to flipping Bruno Mars’ 2014 single “If I Was Your Man” on its head, part of the song’s appeal comes from the litany of potential Easter eggs about Cyrus’ relationship with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, from her choosing to release the track on his 33rd birthday to a reference to the Woolsey Fire that burned down the couple’s Malibu home back in 2019 tucked into the lyrics.

It’s safe to say Diane Keaton is a fan of Miley Cyrus‘ “Flowers.” On Friday (Jan. 20), the actress decided to take herself dancing to the anthem on social media.
“@mileycyrus YOUR INCREDIBLE SONG GAVE ME A REASON TO DANCE IN MY OWN BACKYARD!” the Academy Award winner captioned her Instagram post, which shows her jumping into the grass and getting down as Cyrus’ voice sings, “I can buy myself flowers, write my name in the sand/ Talk to myself for hours, say things you don’t understand/ I can take myself dancing and I can hold my own hand/ Yeah, I can love me better than you can.”
Of course, in her trademark fashion, Keaton just so happens to be wearing a wide-brimmed bowler hat, sunglasses, a long-sleeved black turtleneck and matching wide-leg pants for her jaunt in the backyard.
The Annie Hall star got plenty of support for her jubilant dance, with Kerry Washington commenting, “SAME!” followed by an appropriately bright string of flower emojis. Thalia also wrote, “You are the best” while Christy Carlson Romano playfully pleaded, “Adopt me,” after seeing Keaton’s moves.
Keaton isn’t the only famous face who’s become an instant Smiler thanks to Cyrus’ latest single. A few days prior, Gloria Gaynor expressed her own appreciation for the song in a separate Instagram post, writing, “Your new song carries the torch of empowerment and encourages everyone to find strength in themselves to persevere and thrive. Well done Miley!” upon hearing the song for the very first time.

Miley Cyrus took to social media on Monday (Jan. 9) to tease the chorus of her upcoming single “Flowers,” fully in the buff.
“I can buy myself flowers, write my name in the sand/ Talk to myself for hours, yeah, some things you don’t understand/ But I can take myself dancing, yeah/ I can hold my own hand/ Yeah, I can love me better than you can,” the superstar belted a cappella from privacy of her shower, her back turned to the camera as she ran her hands through her wet hair.
The sultry video isn’t the first time the Hannah Montana star has given fans a taste of the track, which she announced in the final days of 2022 and is due out Friday via new label home Columbia Records. (The release date also just so happens to be her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth’s 33rd birthday.) When “Flowers” does arrive, the independent-minded ballad will serve as the lead single from Cyrus’ eighth studio album Endless Summer Vacation, dropping March 10.
On the last day of the year, Cyrus celebrated her second stint co-hosting her eponymous New Year’s Eve special live from Miami on NBC — this time with godmother Dolly Parton. Over the course of the evening, the two performed everything from “Jolene” and “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll” to a medley of “Wrecking Ball” and “I Will Always Love You.” Cyrus also trotted out special guest stars like Paris Hilton and Sia, David Byrne and Fletcher to join her, respectively, on the former’s “Stars Are Blind,” David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” and her own “Midnight Sky.”

Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez are continuing to support each other, long after their Disney Channel days.
Cyrus took to Instagram on Thursday (Jan. 5) to announce that her eighth studio album, titled Endless Summer Vacation, will arrive on March 10. She also shared the steamy album cover, in which the 30-year-old star is seen in a black unitard, sunglasses and heels, swinging from a trapeze bar against a deep blue background.
Gomez took to the comments section, simply writing, “Damn.”

Both singers began their careers as Disney Channel stars, Miley on Hannah Montana — on which Gomez had a recurring role as Mikayla — and Selena on her series, Wizards of Waverly Place.
According to a press release, the Endless Summer Vacation album — which follows Cyrus’ 2020 LP Plastic Hearts — was recorded in Los Angeles with producers Kid Harpoon, Greg Kurstin, Mike WiLL Made-It and Tyler Johnson. The “Midnight Sky” singer describes Endless Summer Vacation as a love letter to L.A. that showcases the confidence she’s found since focusing on her mental and physical well-being.
On New Year’s Eve, during her NBC special Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party, the “Midnight Sky” singer revealed that “Flowers,” confirmed to be her next record’s lead single, would be dropping Jan. 13.
