Barenaked Ladies’ Ed Robertson Reveals the Band’s Secret to Success

Barenaked Ladies’ Ed Robertson has a simple explanation for the band’s successful 35-year career: “I think the secret recipe is giving a s–t,” he tells Billboard’s Behind the Setlist podcast.

Of course, there’s more to Barenaked Ladies than that. The Canadian four-piece has earned a reputation for crafting witty, offbeat and melodic music with such songs as “One Week” and “If I Had $1,000,000.” And humor, too — that definitely comes across in both the music and the conversation with Robertson. But there’s a reason the band still plays to packed amphitheaters and arenas throughout North America three and a half decades after its first performance — “a fundraiser for a local food bank,” according to Robertson.

“I think every show we’ve ever done, the audience has never questioned that we want to be there, that we know where we are, that we know who we’re playing for and that the show isn’t going to be like the night before and it’s not going to be like the next day,” says Robertson. “There’s so much spontaneity and improv in the show. I know the songs are going to be great, you know? We’re a good band. We’ve played together for a long time. We’ve rehearsed a lot. Every soundcheck every day is a 90-minute rehearsal where we work on anything that we think needs work.”

Trending on Billboard

Putting on a great live show has given the band license to play with their shows’ set lists. Last summer, says Robertson, the band played eight songs from its 14th studio album, In Flight, that was released Sept. 15 on Raisin’ Records. As long as the band plays the songs people want to hear most — including “If I Had $1,000,000,” “The Old Apartment,” “It’s All Been Done,” “Theme From Big Bang Theory” and “Pinch Me” — the audience is receptive of newer material.

“My countryman [musician] Kim Mitchell always used to say what he does is rock n’ roll and customer service,” Robertson says with a chuckle. “I believe firmly that you owe your audience a certain number of the songs they came expecting to hear. Now, I think we’re also really lucky because we have a really good relationship with our hits. There’s nothing that was a hit for the band that we were reluctant about, or it wasn’t a song written by somebody else that was forced upon us by the record company. So we have, we have decades of songs that were popular that we still really like. So it’s really easy for us to build a setlist and go, ‘You know what, if we give them these 10 songs, we can kind of do anything.’

“And we also remind ourselves that this band broke in America playing two-hour shows where people knew no songs,” he continues. “We just had a strong enough live show, and a good enough understanding of how to entertain people, that I think we can get away with a lot.”

Shenseea On Her Second Album, Real Life Inspiration Behind Her Songs & More | Billboard News

Jamaican artist Shenseea talks about her second album, the real inspiration behind her songs, why the dragon is an important symbol to her, her son and how she loves to dress him, writing music to help and relate to other women, her previous big collaborations with Major Lazer, Kanye West, Christina Aguilera and more!

Shenseea
It’s just like me coming back stronger than ever because I’ve been through a lot for the past two years. I’m going to be riding a dragon, don’t tell nobody. Hey guys, it’s your girl Shenseea and you’re watching Billboard News.

Tetris Kelly
Hey it’s Tetris with Billboard News, I am being blinded by the star power today from my girl, Shenseea.

Tetris Kelly
You picked the great time to come by.

Shenseea
Yes!

Tetris Kelly
Your new album is about to come out very soon, ‘Never Gets Late Here.’ How are you feeling?

Shenseea
I’m feeling really good. You know, I’m excited. It’s my second project. So a little bit nervous. But you know, because you know, you set a tone with the first one. And you should always try to beat the first one. So it’s a little bit pressuring. But I’m still excited and just going with it nonetheless,

Tetris Kelly
Well, let’s talk about the title first ‘Never Gets Late Here.’ What does that referencing, it means?

Shenseea
It means to me, timeless music you can put on this album, and it just never gets old. You know, it’s pretty deep. And I love timeless music. That’s the type of music that I grew up on. And that’s the type of music I think that lasts and really inspires great artists to come. And I want to be able to do that as well, because I’ve been inspired by many great artists.

Tetris Kelly
That’s a great goal to set out on.

Shenseea
Yes.

Karol G Accepts Woman of the Year Award | Billboard Women in Music 2024

Karol G accepts the Woman of the Year award at Billboard’s Women in Music 2024.

Karol G:
First of all, it’s an amazing surprise that Sofía Vergara is giving me this award, I love it. Buenas noches a todos. I’m super honored to be here today. Oh my God, [this] might be the most significant and important recognition of all my career, this is super special. This is Woman of the Year, but this is the first time ever a Latina is named the Woman of the Year. So, I have to give my speech in Spanish, of course.

Well, this is Women in Music so I’m going to talk about us. I have to start first by telling you that for years and years, I lived very disappointed with the fact of being a woman. I found myself on the road with so many rejections and so many lost opportunities. Because of that, I wondered why I was not born a man to exploit all this love, this desire and passion I felt for music. Where would all this desire I had to eat the world have gone if it was assumed that, as a woman, I could not achieve it? For a long time, I believed that story. I believed that this was not for me. So many times I was told that I could not make it and I always think of the number of people who leave their dreams behind and leave their dreams aside for that reason, for the perception of others but not for the real dream they have and the desire they have inside. In the midst of my desire, in the midst of wanting to make music even if it was just for me, I decided that if my environment did not change, I was the one who had to change and I was the one who was going to do it. And that I wasn’t going to let being a woman be an obstacle or define my capabilities, but that it was going to be my strength, it was going to be my motive and my reason. And every time I was told no, I found the strength and the desire and everything I needed to say: yes I can. In my mind I changed the “a woman can’t do it” to “look at this woman how she does it, look how a woman does it.”

Karol G Performs ‘Amargura’ | Billboard Women In Music 2024

Karol G performs “Amargura” at Billboard Women In Music 2024.

Read the lyrics below and stay tuned for more Karol G news.

Karol G’s “Amargura” lyrics

(Si te dicen que yo me estoy curando, es la verdad)

(Ey)
Ayer te vi
Aparentemente, estabas contento, estabas feliz

Ey
Esta canción
Que no me la pongan borracha, hijueputa
(O-O-Ovy On The Drums)
(Y aunque yo hago como si nada)

Sofía Vergara Presents Karol G With Woman of the Year | Billboard Women In Music 2024

Sofía Vergara presents Karol G with Woman of the Year at Billboard Women In Music 2024.

Sofía Vergara:
Good evening! I’m here tonight to present the Billboard Woman of the Year Award to La Bitchota, Karol G! Well, Karol G and I became very good friends while we were filming the TV series Griselda. Griselda was Karol G’s first acting role, and she would show up on set every day, ready to just dive in and to learn. And here’s the thing: She was so humble and she was so easy on the set that if you weren’t already a fan of her music, you would have no idea that she’s actually a world-famous mega music star with devoted fans all over the planet.

Billboard has recognized Karol with multiple awards over the years, including the Billboard Woman In Music Rulebreaker award in 2021. And since then, her career has skyrocketed. Just in the last year, Karol became the first woman and second artist ever to top the Billboard 200 with an all-Spanish language album, Mañana Será Bonito, she was also the top Woman Latin Artist on Billboard‘s year-end charts.

And let’s talk about the Grammys. Karol recently won album of the year at the Latin Grammys, and then she became the very first woman to win urban album of the year at the Grammy Awards a few weeks ago. She’s the first Latina and still one of only a few women to headline a global stadium tour, and was the highest grossing Latin touring artist of 2023. I was lucky enough to see her in concert and get to experience her soulful mix of reggaeton, pop, R&B. It was an experience that I’m never gonna forget, like tonight.

Our Woman of the Year! Give it up to the magnificent Woman of the Year.
