Unplugging from your phone can be a challenge — especially if you’re prone to FOMO, but Kim Petras has found an easy yet stylish way to disconnect (and it doesn’t require shutting off your phone). The Motorola razr has become one of the “Alone” singer’s favorite accessories, as it not only features the retro flip phone look, but has been modernized with a touchscreen giving you the ability to go on social media, create content and now, use new the Moto Unplugged feature.

If you ever feel like taking a break from technology, the new feature allows you to customize your experience for specific situations, whether it’s going to the gym or just needing some time to focus on music lessons or school work. Petras especially has taken advantage of the new feature to focus her time and energy on other activities such as yoga.
“I get a lot of messages and calls all the time, so it’s really nice to be able to set your time and be doing yoga, or practicing meditation or putting down lyrics and just have no one bother you,” she tells Billboard. “And I love social media, I love my fans, but there’s definitely times where I just need to be focused on songwriting, need to be focused on details with the show — so it really helps to be able to just set yourself a time and a window [that] you’re not available.”
Motorola
The new Motorola razr doesn’t just feature Moto Unplugged, but comes in a variety of vibrant shades including a Summer Lilac and Sage Green. Its foldable design and Flex View capabilities allow you to customize your user experience, and it also has a camera-mirroring ability where people can see themselves while you snap a picture of them — or take a selfie.
And if you want additional savings, you can snag the Motoroloa razr+ in hot pink (Petras’ favorite shade) for 20% off on Amazon for Prime Big Deal Days.
Besides learning about the 33-year-old’s love for the brand, Billboard also had a chance to learn what she does in her off time, her Feed the Beast world tour and any must-have touring essentials.
What drew you to Motorola?
Well, I used to have the iconic pink Motorola razr, so I love the feeling of hanging up on people and just slapping it — it’s my favorite feeling in the entire world. But I just love this revamp, and when I saw that they had come out with the iconic pink color again, I was really into it. You know, I’m a ’90s baby, and I grew up with 2000s phones, and I love that you can use it as an accessory and clip it to your bag and clip it to things. I don’t necessarily always carry big bags, so like I clip it to my jeans or my T-shirt or things like that, which is really great because usually all I need is my phone and my cards, and that’s it.
Mario Schmolka
Any other favorite Motorola razr features?
I personally really love the outside camera that you can take pictures [of people with], and they can see themselves. I very often have to take so many pictures of people because, you know, it’s like back and forth, like they’re going to check if the pictures are good and all of that. It just makes it so much easier for me to find a pose, and find a good angle and find the lighting immediately when I can see myself on the camera on the outside of the phone.
How do you like to unplug from your phone?
I try to meditate — I love meditation. I think it’s kind of necessary if you have a job that’s really intense at times and really, really busy at times. I definitely listen to a lot of music, I make music, I write down little song ideas. That’s usually what relaxes me and keeps me unplugged from everything.
I have three dogs, so I make sure I get outside with them every day, which really helps. I love nature, I love planning trips with my friends and just being in nature, and around mountains, and beautiful things and I think that really kind of reminds me how kind of small my problems are and you know that I’m a person and not just a work machine, but I really, truly enjoy my work.
Looking at your Feed the Beast tour, what can we expect, and any song you’re looking forward to performing the most?
I’m very excited to sing songs from the newest project [Problématique]. I’m excited for honestly all the songs. I always have different kind of sections in my shows because I have many, you know, EPs and different projects that are very specific, different versions of myself — like “Turn Off the Light” is a very dark version of myself and then “Slut Pop,” which is a very over-sexualized version of myself, and I love kind of switching it up during the show.
I’m most excited honestly for people to see the stage. I worked really hard on the stage and it has kind of its own character and movement, and the technology on this tour is really, really sick. There’s a lot of surprises and the stage just kind of can transform and has a mind of its own, which is really cool and kind of makes everything a little eerie and haunted mansion feeling.
That’s perfect, just in time for spooky season.
Yes, totally, and spooky season is definitely my favorite. I’m such a fall person — I dread summer, to be honest. I’m so excited that I’m getting to go tour during this time because it’s beautiful everywhere during this time and I love being on a bus, I love looking out into the world and seeing different places.
Do you have any must-haves that you take on tour?
My Motorola razr, of course. I need a humidifier, that’s really, really important — the air is so dry traveling a lot [and] it’s just for my voice. Then I just like to bring cards. I like to play with my friends, my dancers with the crew. I play video games in my kind of little room on the bus and invite my friends to do the same thing and watch movies. My little teddy bear, his name is Teddy, who I take everywhere because I won’t have my dogs on tour — I’ve had him since birth and I take him everywhere with me, helps me sleep. And of course speakers, music all the time — there’s so many things, It’s very unfortunate. But, yeah, I just need to make my little room my own, hang up some pictures of my dogs, bring some things that remind me of them.
And are there any upcoming projects you can hint or tease?
My fans are always asking for more, they’re never satisfied, which I love about them — they keep me on my toes. I have an exciting collaboration coming up that I’m super excited about, which might be happening pretty soon. I have some pretty cool performances at some pretty cool televised things that I’m excited about, but mostly I’m just focused on this tour. I’m working on whatever’s next. Right after tour I’m going back to the studio — I’m writing on the tour, which I hope I come back from this tour with my next album, you know.

Billboard spoke with professional guitarist and educator Alex Mak — who has performed as a musical guest on Late Night With Seth Meyers, served as the guitar chair and programmer for the hit Off-Broadway show Titanique and has recorded guitar for instructional guides such as Yamaha’s Arranging for Contemporary Music — to get insight into the most praise-worthy gifts for the musicians in your life. While his go-to choices included David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars on vinyl or a subscription to Logic Pro, he also listed out a few other picks that are perfect for gifting year-round.
Whether they’re a professional in the industry or just starting out, these gifts are sure wow your loved ones. Keep reading to shop Mak’s picks below.
Best Gifts for Musicians
Amazon
For a budget-friendly gift, Mak recommends this guitar tuner that’s under $25 but is useful for any string instrument.
“For any stringed instrument, a nice clip-on tuner will sort you out no matter where you are or how loud it is,” he says. “The Eclipse is long-lasting, easy to see in bright sunlight and because it’s rechargeable, you won’t have to worry about carrying batteries.”
Best Buy
If they play shows nightly, then help them protect their ears with some quality earplugs that’ll muffle loud sounds as they play their favorite songs. Mak especially likes Sennheiser’s design are “they’re tuned to sound natural, but at a much safer listening level.”
Amazon
Nowadays using a tablet or smartdevice has made things easier for musicians to do everything from record music or even turning the page on sheet music. Help them save time turning the page with this musician-approved digital page turner. Mak even says “Once you get used to this pedal for hands free page turns, you’ll wonder how you survived doing things the old fashioned way!”
Add some style to your loved one’s instrument with a basic yet stylish leather guitar strap. Mak prefers this one as it’s wide width “spreads out your instrument’s weight on your shoulder. It [also] has a nifty lock mechanism to prevent accidents, which I promise will happen otherwise.”
Amazon
Help keep their instrument reamin in-tune with a Shubb Capo that’ll attach to their instrument and keep audio in sounding as pristine as possible. Mak makes sure he keeps one close by when he’s working with vocalists or is in the creative zone.
“They’re one of the simplest ways to get some inspiration and create complementary parts in a recording session,” he tells. “Shubb capos are durable, fast to put on, and they keep things in tune.”
No matter what stage of their career they’re in, this music book will help provide them advice and guidance — especially for those who enjoy picking up a good book when they’re not playing their instrument. The book comes out on Oct. 24, but you can preorder the book now to ensure you get a copy.
This copy is one of Mak’s favorite picks as it has helped to educate professionals and is the most updated version.
“An updated version of the manual that’s educated the likes of Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan, the Passman book is a great read for artists at any stage in their careers. Advice in this industry has a quick expiration date, and with all the changes happening as we speak, current knowledge is your greatest asset.”
You can never go wrong with basics and for artists that would be storage spaces for everything from sheet music to recorded audio. That’s where this portable USB comes in — and it’s on sale! For Mak, he finds that “SSDs are loads faster than hard drives, making them perfect for transferring large files. The T7 Shield is fast and IP65 rated for water and dust resistance.”
Amazon
They can track their performances, practices and more using a portable recorder that Mak describes as “worth their weight in gold.” This design by Portacapture comes with a touchscreen to customize your recording experiences and is compact enough to slip in your bag or purse.
“They’re a huge step up in quality from recording audio with your phone,” he tells. “I use one daily to record practices, performances, videos, lessons — you name it! The Portacapture’s touch screen gives you intuitive access to a full-featured audio interface, no matter where you are.”
Amazon
For friends who record music videos or content for social media, the musician finds that lighting can have an even greater impact than the type of camera you use, which is where this LED light comes in.
“Lighting makes a huge difference in video quality, in my opinion even more than a new camera,” Mak says. “This LED light is perfect for recording videos for social media (and remote meetings). It offers warm and cool lighting tones, and an app for quick adjustments.”

Geri Halliwell-Horner is adding some spice to our reading lists this year, but instead of publishing a musician memoir, she’s taken over the young adult sphere.
But you don’t need to be a young adult to pick up the book. In fact, the former Spice Girl wrote it with the intention that anyone could buy the book titled Rosie Frost & the Falcon Queen.
Spice Girls’ Geri Halliwell-Horner Celebrates Girl Power in New Children’s Book: How…
10/07/2023
“I think the best books are for anyone,” she says in a new interview with Billboard. “You can be from [10-years-old] on upwards, but I would say that time is quite formative years of really working stuff out and we’re defining ourselves, we’re growing.”
The book follows 13-year-old Rosie, who suddenly becomes an orphan and is sent to a mysterious school for gifted teens. It’s there she must face bullies, a chilling deputy headmaster, and unraveling the mystery of who/or what killed her mother. All this on top of getting good grades and making friends — as if being a teen weren’t hard enough.
“The world needs a new hero, an ordinary hero that finds a power they never knew they had,” she says, and hopes that her character, Rosie, can do just that.

As an added bonus, anyone who orders the book will be able to scan a QR code, which features two original songs written and sung by the pop star titled “Ghost in My House” and “Beautiful Life.”
In an inspiring conversation with Billboard, Halliwell-Horner breaks down her writing process, what led her to become an author, partnering with the Barbara Bush Foundation, her favorite Halloween costumes and how it feels seeing people dress up as her decades later.
How did you get the idea to add music into your book?
I love things that are really interactive and immersive, and then I got the idea because I’ve got a younger son and he has children’s books that are obviously for much younger [ages]. They put in nursery rhymes. and I thought, well, why can’t you do that, but for older people? And then it feels like our club that we can all join into — that was the point.
The interactive element is so unique and really helps connect you to the story more.
Yeah, that’s what I feel. You just help that narrative and the first song, “Ghost in the House,” is when she gets locked in the Falcon Queen Gallery by Ottilie, and Ottilie is just such a — we can’t say the word — and it’s horrible. It’s 3 a.m. and she’s really scared, and this gallery is full of paintings of amazing women from history, from Queen Elizabeth I to Charlotte Brontë, Amelia Earhart … Frida Kahlo — all sorts of amazing women — but it’s 3 a.m., she’s locked in there and she comes face-to-face with the ghost of Anne Boleyn, who becomes her mentor.
How is the the songwriting process different from writing a book?
Totally different. I really like writing a song. I mean, I’m no Mariah Carey, but I like writing songs in the sense that I feel very happy and comfortable in the writing process. I feel that that’s my strongest contribution to music, is the writing process. But I would say comparing songwriting to book writing, songwriting is a bit more like an espresso coffee. Like, boom, off you go — you got three minutes to do it. Whereas a book is a whole meal. It’s a seven-course meal of taking you on a journey and holding your attention to keep you page-turning. So you’re invested. Why do you want to turn that page? Why do you want to do this? There’s an important feeling there, connection with that character, and hopefully I’m feeding you as a reader. I’m hoping that you go, “I want to know what happened to Rosie,” but I also want you, the reader, to find your own power through her.
Do you have any tools or things that help motivate you to write?
Yeah, totally. First of all, the phone’s got to be outside the room. Just creative killer. And then I read Stephen King’s book about writing, and this was further down the line. Go in a dark room, no distractions, with limited stimulants [and] visual stimulants as possible, so you’re in the zone.
You also partnered with the Barbara Bush Foundation. How did that come about?
It’s really instinctive. A lot of my decisions in life are instinctive. Reading has given me so much, you know, America has given me so much because all your American television, those movies that inspired me. The Barbara Bush Foundation I just heard about and I thought, “This is amazing.” You know, the power of reading changes your life.
What I love about it is, first of all, it’s partisan. It’s not about politics; it’s about people. And Barbara Bush, she’s a Falcon Queen. She used her platform wisely and well; she didn’t squander the moment. And she uplifted others. She said, start with the parents or the caregivers or the guardians, and if they’re reading, then the children read. It’s helping across multi-generations, and I just thought that’s such a lovely thing — and it’s Warren Buffett that inspired me. He was always sharing his money, sharing his profits. So I thought, you know what? I think it’s really healthy to do the same.
When did you know you wanted to be an author?
I studied English literature before music because I was doing theater. … D. H. Lawrence, Hamlet and I really loved it, and I was getting good marks for my essays. But then I went into music. But again, it was a natural part for me. I like the writing bit, but then I was [songwriting], so I always felt like a writer. You know, throughout my music career, I worked on the movie [Spice World], on the scripts. I always liked that sort of conceptual part of it — creating.
Now that Halloween is coming do you have a favorite costume? And how does it feel seeing people still dressing up as Ginger Spice?
It’s very flattering to see anyone dressed up as me. I love dressing up myself. So my favorite one you can see on my Instagram … and I actually think I won Halloween the year that I did it — I did the guy from Peaky Blinders.
Have you thought about who or what you’re going to be this year?
It involves — it’s quite a good character from an animation. Yeah, I’m not going to spoil it.
