Música popular colombiana — or “popular Colombian music” — made its debut with a big bang at the 2024 Billboard Latin Music awards with a performance by Luis Alfonso opening the show.
The Colombian star kicked off the awards with a boisterous rendition of his hit “Tequila Con Cerveza,” originally recorded with urban star Blessd, followed by current hit “Chismofilia.” Dressed in leather pants and boots, Luis Alfonso sported his signature cowboy hat and performed backed by both banda and norteño instrumentation.
The Mexican influence is clear in both look and arrangements, but Luis Alfonso’s “popular Colombian” sound was unmistakable in the colloquial lyrics and traditional Colombian vibe.

Luis Alfonso’s “Chismofilia,” which has become a runaway hit in Colombia and is also rising in the U.S. charts (this week, it’s No. 19 on Billboard’s Latin Pop airplay chart), featured a troupe of country dancers doing the singer’s signature (and irresistible) head bop.
It was enough to get the audience on its feet and setting the tone for the evening.
Earlier in the week, Luis Alfonso spoke about música popular colombiana at a panel during Latin Music Week that also featured country-mates Paola Jara, Yeison Jiménez and Pipe Bueno.
“It’s an honor to represent my country, Colombia, but also the heritage of popular Colombian music,” said Luis Alfonso in an interview.
The Billboard Latin Music Awards recognize the impact of Latin music on the global scene, being the only awards based directly on the performance of albums, songs and artists on Billboard’s weekly charts. This year, awards will be presented in 49 categories, spanning the genres of Latin pop, tropical, Latin rhythm and regional Mexican.
Finalists, and the eventual winners, reflect performance of new recordings on Billboard’s albums and songs charts for the period covering rankings dated Aug. 19, 2023 through the Sept. 7, 2024, charts. Determinations are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay and touring, tracked by Billboard and its data partner, Luminate.
Produced by Telemundo in collaboration with American Country Broadcast Inc., the awards can be seen on Telemundo, the Telemundo app, streaming service Peacock and in Latin America and the Caribbean through Telemundo Internacional.
This year, the list of finalists is led by Karol G, who has 17 mentions in key categories such as Artist of the Year, Tour of the Year, and Global 200 Latin Artist of the Year. Bad Bunny and Peso Pluma follow closely behind with 15 mentions each. Other notable finalists include Feid, with 11 mentions, and regional Mexican stars Fuerza Regida and Junior H, both with 8 mentions, including Artist of the Year. The evening was hosted by Venezuelan comedian George Harris, who entertained the packed Fillmore Miami Beach with relevant music jokes, and even had a salsa karaoke sesh with the crowd.
Shortly after, Spanish artist Ana Mena kicked off the Billboard Latin Music Week 35th Anniversary Celebration with her sugary pop-dance tunes that included her viral hit “Madrid City” — and yes, a handful of people were spotted doing the ponytail trend during her performance.

Straight from Chile, Floyymenor then took center stage to perform three of his tracks that are creating all the buzz on social media: “Peligrosa,” “Apaga El Cel,” and “Gata Only.” The latter of the three — which spent 14 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart — is a three-time finalist at the 2024 Billboard Latin Music Awards airing Sunday (Oct. 20) on Telemundo.
Belinda, who earlier in the week formed part of the women’s panel at Latin Music Week, arrived wearing a baby blue satin dress and white knee-high boots. And while she oozed pop princess, the Mexican artist flaunted her fierce bélica era on stage, performing “Cactus,” “300 Noches” (her collab with Natanael Cano), and “La Mala.”
With just an acoustic guitar, Tito Double P (who earlier in the week sat down with Peso Pluma for a panel on the new Mexican music movement) helmed an intimate stripped-down performance that left the crowd wanting more. During his set, the corridos breakthrough star sung a couple of his hits, including “Escápate,” part of his debut album, Incómodo, which bowed at No. 2 on the Top Latin Albums and Regional Mexican Albums charts, and No. 20 on the all-genre Billboard 200.
The evening continued with the highly-anticipated performance by Young Miko, who pumped up the crowd with bangers such as “offline,” “Classy 101” and “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 58.” The Puerto Rican rapper and artist formed part of a Superstar Q&A at Latin Music Week, where she discussed her rising success. “In reality, if you think about it, social media growth is so abrupt, fast, and global that it can definitely seem like an overnight thing, social media-wise. But indeed, we have been making music since 2018, 2019, and about three years ago is when Young Miko really started to gain a lot of momentum,” she said at the panel.
Closing off the 35th anniversary celebration was global merengue star Elvis Crespo, who, joined by a live band and group of dancers, had the entire venue of all ages on their feet. Crespo performed timeless tropical tunes such as “Luna Llena,” “Nuestra Cancion” and “Tu Sonrisa.”
“I want to thank Billboard because in February of 1998, the people at Sony presented me for the first time at this conference. I’m enjoying this moment to the max, 26 years later. It’s an incredible path where through my dream and my passion for music, I have managed to develop stories of many people I meet on the street,” Crespo said, also thanking Billboard’s Leila Cobo for all the support, before finalizing with the all-time party classic “Suavemente.”

Shakira‘s fans will have to wait a bit longer to see her perform live again, but the good news is that many more will be able to do so.
The Colombian superstar announced on Friday (Oct. 18) that the North American leg of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour will move from arenas to stadiums due to high demand. Instead of starting in November, it will be postponed to May 2025.
“The demand for tickets and more shows has reached the point that our tour now requires stadiums in the USA and more dates so I can see as many of you as possible,” Shakira wrote in a statement posted on her Instagram stories. “As a result, we’re elevating my North America run from arenas to stadiums and the dates will be shifted to May 2025, right after my Latin American tour”.
Shakira announced in April that the Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour would begin on Nov. 2 in Palm Desert, California. Earlier this month, she announced dates for Latin America, starting February in Brazil and making stops in Mexico, Chile, Argentina and more countries.
The new dates for North America will be announced on Monday.

Shakira’s Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour is in support of her LP of the same name that dropped in March, marking her first new album in seven years. Following its release, the set landed at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Top Latin Albums and Latin Pop Albums chart, a feat that made her the first woman to secure No. 1 albums in four different decades. It also scored a Latin Grammy nomination for album of the year.

My dear fans,
Your incredible support since my tour announcement has truly been extraordinary, and it’s already making this the biggest tour of my career.
As Live Nation communicated earlier, the demand for tickets and more shows has reached the point that our tour now requires stadiums in the USA and more dates so I can see as many of you as possible.
The production of my show is now also so much larger and unlike anything I’ve done before. As a result, we’re elevating my North America run from arenas to stadiums and the dates will be shifted to May 2025, right after my Latin American tour. Get ready — cities and states will be announced on Monday!
I know many of you have made big efforts to be a part of these shows. Thank you so much for supporting me through this. Your understanding and love means the world to me and helps me to continue breaking barriers.
I’ll be waiting for you with great anticipation. I promise to make it worth the wait and deliver the best show of my life!
With all my love and gratitude,
Shakira
