Cuban artist José Manuel Carbajal Zaldívar, best known as El Taiger, has died. He was 37 years old. The urbano singer passed away on Thursday (Oct. 10) a week after being shot in the head, his family confirmed in an official statement posted on El Taiger’s Instagram Stories.
“On the morning of Friday, October 4, 2024, Jose Manuel Carvajal, known as ‘El Taiger,’ was the victim of a senseless violent crime. He was found near Jackson Memorial Hospital and immediately transported to the Emergency Intensive Care Unit,” the statement reads. “From the moment of his arrival, a team of physicians at Jackson Memorial worked tirelessly to provide him with the care he needed. We are extremely grateful. During this incredibly difficult time, family, friends and supporters joined together in prayer, hope and support, seeking a miracle. To all who offered their prayers, we thank you. Sadly, this afternoon, El Taiger was pronounced dead and is now reunited with his beloved mother in heaven.”
One of the most popular Cubaton artists (a genre that fuses reggaeton with traditional Cuban rhythms), El Taiger is known for his Cuban-rooted urban sound heard in songs such as “La Historia,” “El Papelito” and “Habla Matador.” His debut album, Taiger, was released in 2016 on Puerto Rican hip-hop artist Cosculluela’s label Rottboyz, and in 2017, he was featured on the Fate of the Furious movie soundtrack on producer Pinto “Wahin” and DJ Ricky Luna’s track “La Habana.” His most recent production, “Rulay,” in collaboration with Ecuadorian newcomer Niko G, came out this summer.

According to a press conference offered by the chief of the Miami Police Department last week, officers responded to a call just after 7 a.m. on Oct. 3, where they found a man inside a black vehicle who had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. El Taiger was then transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery and remained in critical condition until his passing. Billboard reached out to the Miami PD to get an update on the investigation, but did not hear back at press time.
“While this news is both shocking and heartbreaking, we encourage fans of El Taiger to honor his memory by celebrating the joy he brought to so many,” the family’s statement continues. “Turn up your music, dance and celebrate his life. El Taiger was the sentiment of the people, and now we must keep that sentiment alive through his music and his legacy.”

A Great Day With J Balvin sheds light on how Balvin (real name José Álvaro Osorio Balvin) — one of the first major Latin artists to publicly speak about his struggles with mental health — finds his balance.
“That’s why I said before, in the darkest moments, I didn’t lose control. But I take my pills daily,” he told Billboard in his cover story interview. “It’s perfectly normal, as if someone had an issue with high [blood] pressure. But there’s also meditation — I’ve been meditating since I was 19 years old — daily exercise, eating habits and the people you surround yourself with. The fact that I don’t do drugs or anything like that has also been part of having that mental, spiritual balance.”
Additionally, the “Mi Gente” singer is confirmed for a Superstar Q&A at the 2024 Billboard Latin Music Week, returning to Miami Beach on Oct. 14-18, with other confirmed artists including Feid, Young Miko, Gloria Estefan, Alejandro Sanz, Maria Becerra, and Peso Pluma, among many others. Latin music revenue hit a record high of $685 million in the first half of 2024, according to the RIAA’s mid-year Latin music report released Thursday (Oct. 10). According to the analysis, Latin increased 7% compared to the first half of 2023, led by paid streaming subscriptions, which account for two-thirds of U.S. Latin revenue. Furthermore, Latin music revenues in the first half of the year once again grew faster than the overall recorded music market.
While the report doesn’t specify which artists or genres are directly driving this mid-year record high, Latin music’s bump can be a contributed to a number of artists who are fueling a movement. From Karol G to Peso Pluma, who are still riding high from a historic 2023, and newcomers like Xavi, it’s safe to say that a diverse collective of acts have helped usher another record year for Latin music.
“Latin music keeps soaring to new heights — setting US revenue records as we report today and driving the culture forward across the globe,” Michele Ballantyne, RIAA president & chief operating officer, said in a statement. “There’s a reason Latin is the fastest-growing genre on US streaming services. Fans just can’t get enough of its undeniable energy, emotion, power and joy.”
Trending on Billboard
The RIAA’s mid-year report explains that paid streaming subscriptions contributed more than two-thirds of total revenues. Overall, U.S. paid subscriptions reached a record average of 99 million in 2024 and delivered 68% of total revenues for US Latin music. Combined revenues from ad-supported, on-demand streaming services (including YouTube, Vevo, the free version of Spotify and social media platforms) provide nearly 25% of the total value of Latin music, compared to 10% for overall recorded music revenues.
Meanwhile, digital services (including paid and ad-supported streaming, online radio options, and digital downloads) provided 98% of total Latin music revenues in the first half of 2024. Physical revenues experienced a growth, up 21% compared to the same period in 2022.
“Latin music in the US continues to break through and reach new heights, now providing nearly 8% of total recorded music revenues in the country. Strong growth across all major formats — including a doubling of physical revenues — has enabled Latin music’s diverse mix of new and established artists’ innovative styles to fuel sustained momentum for over a decade,” added Matt Bass, RIAA vice president, research.
In April, the RIAA reported that, for a second year in a row, Latin music revenues in the U.S. had exceeded the $1 billion mark on the wings of 16% growth that outpaced the overall market.

Mexican superstar Luis Miguel will close his international tour in Mexico City at the GNP Seguros Stadium on Nov. 30, Mexican promoter Ocesa announced on Tuesday (Oct. 8).
Known as “El Sol de México,” which loosely translates to “México’s sun,” Luis Miguel has chosen the Mexican capital as the stage for one of the most important moments of his career to make a spectacular closing of his Luis Miguel Tour 2023-2024, which grossed $318.2 million and sold 2.2 million tickets in its first 146 concerts, according to figures reported in September to Billboard Boxscore. This made it the highest grossing tour of all time among Latin artists.

The singer of “La Incondicional,” “Culpable o No” and “Suave” returns to Mexico City, where he began a series of concerts at the Arena Ciudad de Mexico on Tuesday that will end on Oct. 24, with which he will set a new record as the artist who has had the most number of concerts at that venue, with 18 presentations, according to the promoter Zignia Live.
Luis Miguel’s current tour began last summer, with 10 concerts at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and then another 10 at the venue of the same name in Santiago, Chile. Those 20 initial dates grossed a total of $28.1 million and sold 227,000 tickets, establishing it as the third highest grossing tour of his remarkable career. After that, he toured the U.S., Mexico and Latin America, returned to the U.S., traveled to Spain and, most recently, returned to Latin America.
Luis Miguel’s U.S. stint was fruitful, grossing $49.8 million, but his return to Mexico — his native country — was even more successful, generating $57.5 million from 20 concerts. By the end of 2023, he had earned $141 million, still far from the all-time record, but enough to easily surpass his own 2018-2019 Mexico Por Siempre tour, which grossed $101.4 million, making it his most successful tour to date.
Luis Miguel has captivated generations with his unmatched voice, unique style and stage presence, which continues to establish him as the most beloved Latin artists of all time. He has been honored with multiple awards, including Billboard Latin Music Awards, Grammys and Latin Grammys. His discography is one of the most acclaimed in the industry, selling more than 15 million copies of his album Romance. He holds the record for the longest tour by a Latin artist, and is also the singer with the most performances at the Auditorio Nacional, one of the most important cultural venues in Mexico and Latin America.

Thanks to the rise, “Mi Eterno Amor Secreto” wins the weekly Greatest Gainer award among the 40 songs on Regional Mexican Airplay. It also evicts Banda MS’ “Tengo Claro,” featuring Alfredo Olivas, after the latter’s one week in charge.
“Mi Eterno Amor Secreto” becomes Yuridia’s first ruler during a Billboard chart career that dates to 2005, when the Mexican singer-songwriter reached a No. 16 high on Top Latin Albums through her debut album La Voz de Un Ángel (March 2006). The set also took her to her first top 10 on any chart, peaking at No. 6 on Latin Pop Albums.
The song’s coronation on Regional Mexican Airplay arrives after Yuridia came close to the summit with the No. 3-peaking “Que Agonía,” with Angela Aguilar, in March 2023.
Muñoz secures his fifth champ, previously topping the list with the one-week ruler “Como En Los Viejos Tiempos” in January.
The pair previously collaborated on “Me Hace Tanto Bien,” one of 14 tracks on Yuridia’s album Pa’ Luego Es Tarde, her first foray with a regional Mexican Album, which reached a No. 7 high on Regional Mexican Albums in 2022; the song did not land on a radio ranking.
“Mi Eterno Amor Secreto” also flies 13-2 on the overall Latin Airplay chart, for both artists’ highest charting entry to date. While “Que Agonía” took Yuridia to a No. 3 high in March 2023, Muñoz locked a No. 4 high with “Como En Los Viejos Tiempos” in January.
The latest on Yuridia and Muñoz becomes the fourth female-male soloist team-up to land in the top three on Latin Airplay in 2024. Peso Pluma did it twice through collabs with Karol G and Kali Uchis. Here are those combined gender hits on the overall radio tally thus far:
Artists, Title, Peak Position, Peak Date
Karol G & Peso Pluma, “Qlona,” No. 1, March 2
Kali Uchis & Peso Pluma, “Igual Que Un Ángel,” No. 1, June 29
Alejandro Fernández & Anitta, “La Tóxica,” No. 2, Sept. 21
Yuridia & Eden Muñoz, “Mi Eterno Amor Secreto,” No. 3, Oct. 12
