Jeymes Samuel , the director of The Book of Clarence, stopped by Billboard News to talk with Billboard‘s Executive Director of Hip-Hop and R&B, Gail Mitchell, about creating the movie, casting LaKeith Stanfield, working with Jay-Z, creating music for movies and more!Jeymes Samuel:When I open my eyes in the morning, the Lord says, “Action.” And the movie of my of my life begins.

Hey, everyone. I’m Jeymes Samuel, and this is Billboard News.

Gail Mitchell:This is Gail Mitchell, executive director of R&B and hip-hop for Billboard magazine, and I’m here to chat with the director of the upcoming film The Book of Clarence, Jeymes Samuel.

Biblical epic, this one is. Before it was a Western epic with The Harder They Fall, your earlier film. So what is it about the word “epic” and “bold” that catches your attention and you go with it?

Jeymes Samuel: I think for me, “epic” and “bold” are two of the words that define cinema. You know, it’s not often you know, in this day when every other movie is a superhero movie, you know, and I love those movies, but it’s really quite rare we get original storytelling in a cinematic experience, right? It’s usually with an IP we’re familiar with and or a sequel or something. I just love original storytelling like I love cinema. I love film. I love music and I love originality. So who better to bring those things than moi?

Gail Mitchell:Exactly! So talk about the cast. You’ve got some great cast members. You’re working with LaKeith again.

Jeymes Samuel:Yeah.

Gail Mitchell:So talk about him. How was he? How does he define Clarence for you? What is it? What instincts did you see in him making The Harder They Fall that clicked with you and said, “This is my Clarence”?Watch the full video above!

Sexyy Red is Billboard’s latest cover star! Ice Spice has teamed up with Pepsi’s lemon-lime soda STARRY for a commercial that will air during the Super Bowl. We all saw when Destiny’s Child reunited for ‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé’ but it looks like they were back together once more for a very special reason. […]

With Donald Glover’s Atlanta officially off the air (damn it!), fans of LaKeith Stanfield have been missing his comedic antics as he’s since been taking on more serious roles since he blew up when the series debuted back in 2016.

Luckily for us, the man is once again returning to his funnier side as he will be turning the biblical era on its head in Jeymes Samuel’s upcoming comedy film, The Book of Clarence. Set in the time of Jesus Christ, The Book of Clarence stars Stanfield as the titular character who witnesses the rise of the son of God in Nazareth and decides he needs to get in on that miraculous action and make some bank to help his family. But instead of becoming a disciple of Christ, Clarence goes about copying his style and “performing” miracles of his own with the help of his trusty “followers.”

Unfortunately for him, Clarence learns that the Roman Empire isn’t too keen on messiahs giving the oppressed people any sort of hope. In order to save his own hide, Clarence must give up Jesus Christ to the Roman authorities. For his betrayal, he would be rewarded handsomely. This is Judas and The Black Messiah all over again!
How far will Clarence take his fraudulent ways? We don’t know, but we do know that Atlanta‘s Darius Epps wouldn’t give up anybody.
Check out the trailer for The Book of Clarence below, and let us know if you’ll be checking for this when it hits theaters Jan. 12, 2024.

Jay-Z is back on Instagram. The “Politics As Usual” rapper has returned to the social media platform to promote The Book Of Clarence movie.

As spotted on Vulture the Brooklyn, New York native has come back to IG. But in signature fashion his most recent post was not in vain but to push Black art even further. “The Book Of Clarence January 2024” the caption read. The post was the official trailer to the film starring LaKeith Stanfield which is being billed as a clever take of the biblical times. This project is directed by Jeymes Samuel. “A down on his luck Jerusalemite embarks on a misguided attempt to capitalize on the rise of celebrity and influence the Messiah for his own personal gain. The journey leads him on an exploration of faith and an unexpected path,” reads the film’s official synopsis.

“Clarence is a person that doesn’t believe in anything outside of what’s in front of him, what he can see and hear,” Samuel recently told Vanity Fair. “Clarence has a lot of inside belief—he has a lot of inside confidence. This man is sure he could fly. He reminds me of me growing up, but unlike me, he has no outside faith. I think it’s just a really interesting vantage point to explore living in that particular time and place, where most everyone around him is speaking about the Messiah.”
The Book Of Clarence will also feature music from Jay-Z. It is slated for a 2024 release. You can view the trailer below.

Actor LaKeith Stanfield is kicking off the new year with a heaping helping of baby mama drama. A woman claims the engaged Atlanta star is the father of her new baby daughter, Apollo.

The woman scorned is Tylor Hurd, and she made her claims of Stanfield being a deadbeat in the court of social media.
Reports Page Six:

On Saturday, artist Tylor Hurd posted an Instagram reel of her baby girl and the “Sorry to Bother You” actor, 31, sharing sweet moments together. In one part of the clip, Stanfield could be seen dancing in front of the newborn as she sat in a chair watching him.
The “Atlanta” actor was also photographed holding Apollo for a photo shoot and at a family entertainment center.
“decided to leave being someone’s secret family in 2022 ❤️ meet Apollo Stanfield,” Hurd, 24, captioned the post.
In now-deleted comments captured by The Neighborhood Talk, Stanfield seemingly took an issue with Hurd posting their daughter.
Welp, it seems like Stanfield is claiming the kid, but Hurd feels he’s not been putting in enough time as father.

Not so coincidentally, the actor had just announced his engagement to someone else—his girlfriend Kasmerre Trice—before Hurd went nuclear on the Internets.
Stanfield also has a child, who was reportedly born in June 2017, with ex-girlfriend Xosha Roquemore.
