Lada Gaga

Lady Gaga was spotted rocking a Harley Quinn outfit while filming scenes for the upcoming Joker sequel.

On Saturday (March 26), the 36-year-old actress and pop star was photographed in full costume and makeup while filming scenes in New York City for filmmaker Tod Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux, the follow-up to his Oscar-winning 2019 movie starring Joaquin Phoenix.

In the set photos, Gaga is surrounded by a large crowd while being escorted down court building steps by Gotham City police officers. Her outfit included a red coat, white blouse with black diamonds, and a short black skirt. Onlookers are seen holding signs with messages like “Free Joker” and “Joker Marry Me.”

Although it has not yet been confirmed, Gaga is widely believed to be portraying DC character Harley Quinn in the Joker sequel.

On Feb. 14, Phillips shared a close-up photo on his Instagram of Phoenix face-to-face with Gaga‘s character. In the snapshot, Gaga holds Phoenix’s face in her hands, her eyes open wildly, with evidence on both of their red-paint-smeared faces that they’ve just kissed.

The pop star and actress confirmed her starring role in the Joker sequel in August 2022 by posting a teaser clip on her Instagram, featuring Phoenix and Gaga’s silhouettes dancing together to the song “Cheek to Cheek,” which Gaga famously covered alongside Tony Bennett.

Folie à Deux, which is currently in production, will also star Zazie Beetz, who returns as Sophie, as well as new castmembers Catherine Keener and Brendan Gleeson in yet-unknown roles.

Joker: Folie à Deux is slated to open Oct. 4, 2024.

Lady Gaga will not perform at the 2023 Oscars on Sunday, Glenn Weiss — one of the show’s executive producers and showrunners — said in a Zoom call with entertainment journalists on Wednesday (March 8).
Weiss explained that Gaga is busy making a movie and felt that she couldn’t give a performance the time and commitment it would need to meet her expectations. Gaga is nominated for best original song with “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick.

“We invited all five nominees,” Weiss said on the Zoom. “We have a great relationship with Lady Gaga and her camp. She is in the middle of shooting a movie right now. Here, we are honoring the movie industry and what it takes to make a movie after a bunch of back and forth…It didn’t feel like she can get a performance to the caliber that we’re used to with her and that she is used to. So, she is not going to perform on the show.”

As a result, this will be the second Oscar telecast in a row in which one of the five nominated songs was not performed on the show. Last year, Van Morrison declined to perform “Down to Joy” from Belfast.

Gaga is in the midst of filming director Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux. She is playing Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Oscar for best actor for playing the title character in The Joker. Warner Bros. plans to release the film Oct. 9, 2024 — five years to the day after the release of the first film.

Gaga has performed on the Oscars three times. In 2015, she performed a medley of four songs from The Sound of Music to honor that film on its 50th anniversary. In a memorable Oscar moment, Julie Andrews came out at the end of Gaga’s performance and the two stars embraced.

In 2016, Gaga sang the nominated song “Til It Happens to You” from The Hunting Ground. In 2019, she and Bradley Cooper sang “Shallow” from A Star Is Born, which went on to win the award. The staging of “Shallow” was memorable, with Gaga and Cooper stepping up from their front-row seats to take the stage.

Two weeks ago, the Academy announced that Rihanna will perform “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The following day, they announced that actress and singer Sofia Carson, accompanied by songwriter Diane Warren, will perform “Applause” from Tell It like a Woman.

Last week, the Academy announced that Stephanie Hsu, an Oscar nominee for best supporting actress for Everything Everywhere All at Once, will join David Byrne and Son Lux to perform that film’s “This Is a Life.” They also announced that Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava will perform “Naatu Naatu” from RRR.

“Hold My Hand,” which Gaga co-wrote with BloodPop, peaked at No. 49 on the Billboard Hot 100 (in June). The song might well have reached a new peak following the Oscars. Both of Gaga’s previous Oscar-nominated songs reached new peaks following the telecast. “Shallow” shot from No. 21 to No. 1 on the Hot 100 the week following the Oscars. It had previously peaked at No. 5. “Til It Happens to You” had failed to make the Hot 100 when it was first released, but entered the chart at No. 95 following the Oscars.

Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the 95th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 12, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, and will be televised live on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide.

Oscar show production talent who participated in the Zoom call were Weiss and Ricky Kirshner, executive producers and showrunners; Molly McNearney, executive producer; Sarah Levine Hall, producer; Rickey Minor, musical director; and Dave Boone,  Agathe Panaretos and Nefetari Spencer, writers. The session was moderated by Jacqueline Coley.

It looks like Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is getting a love story in Joker: Folie à Deux, the upcoming sequel to the 2019 DC film.

Late Tuesday (Feb. 14), Todd Phillips — who directs and writes the Joker films — shared a close-up photo on his Instagram of Phoenix face-to-face with Lady Gaga‘s character, widely believed (but not yet confirmed) to be Harley Quinn. Gaga holds Phoenix’s face in her hands, her eyes open wildly, with evidence on both of their red-paint-smeared faces that they’ve just kissed.

“Happy Valentines Day.,” Phillips captioned the unorthodoxly romantic image.

The pop star/actress confirmed her starring role in the Joker sequel back in August by posting a teaser clip on her Instagram, featuring Phoenix and Gaga’s silhouettes dancing together to the song “Cheek to Cheek,” which Gaga famously covered alongside Tony Bennett.

Folie à Deux, which is currently in production, will also star Zazie Beetz, who returns as Sophie, as well as new castmembers Catherine Keener and Brendan Gleeson in yet-unknown roles.

Lady Gaga is nominated for her fourth Oscar at the upcoming ceremony on March 12, nabbing a best original song nod for co-writing the Top Gun: Maverick power ballad “Hold My Hand.” “Thank you so much to the Academy for nominating my song ‘Hold My Hand’ for an Oscar this year!” Gaga wrote on Instagram last month after nominations were revealed. “Writing this song for the film Top Gun: Maverick was a deep and powerful experience that I will never forget. So grateful for the magic of music and cinema. Love you my co-writer @bloodpop I’m on set filming now big love to little monsters!”

Joker: Folie à Deux is slated to open Oct. 4, 2024.

After the 2023 Academy Awards nominations were revealed on Tuesday (Jan. 24), Lady Gaga officially became a four-time Oscar nominee.

While the “Bloody Mary” singer has yet to share her feelings about being a contender at this year’s ceremony, former Love for Sale and Cheek to Cheek collaborator Tony Bennett extended his congrats to his dear friend.

“Congratulations to the amazingly talented @ladygaga on her 4th Oscar nomination!” the 96-year-old wrote via Twitter. “Today, Lady Gaga makes history as the first artist to receive three nominations in the Best Original Song category at the #Oscars. So proud of you!”

As Bennett mentioned, Gaga is nominated in the best original song category for “Hold My Hand,” from the Tom Cruise-starring Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack. The track, which was written and produced by the pop star alongside BloodPop, peaked at No. 49 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Gaga was previously nominated in the best original song category at the Oscars in 2016 for “Til It Happens to You,” co-written with Diane Warren, from The Hunting Ground documentary. In 2019, she earned a best original song nom for “Shallow” from A Star Is Born — and won in the category — and made it into the best actress category for starring in the movie as Ally Maine.

“Hold My Hand” is currently nominated at the Grammy Awards for best song written for visual media; Gaga is also nominated for her work on the soundtrack in the best compilation soundtrack for visual media category.

In 2022, the singer was nominated alongside Bennett for their joint album, Love for Sale, which was up for album of the year and best traditional pop vocal album, the latter of which they won. The album’s track “I Get a Kick Out of You” was also nominated for best music video, best pop duo/group performance and record of the year. Their 2014 album, Cheek to Cheek, also won in the best traditional pop vocal album category.

Lady Gaga’s 2011 Born This Way track “Bloody Mary” enters at No. 68 on the latest Billboard Hot 100 (dated Jan. 14).
The song debuts over a decade after its release thanks, initially, to hype on TikTok sparked by the new Netflix Addams Family spin-off series Wednesday, despite the fact that the song isn’t actually featured in the show. (TikTok does not presently contribute directly to Billboard‘s charts.)

In the series, the titular character appears in a dance sequence soundtracked by The Cramps’ 1981 single “Goo Goo Muck.” Fans took the clip to TikTok but replaced “Goo Goo Muck” with a sped-up version of “Bloody Mary,” which then went viral. The song has been used in nearly 4 million videos on the platform to date. Lady Gaga herself participated in the trend, in which she re-created the dance, garnering more than 12 million views.

The song’s renewed attention has helped it steadily gain in recent weeks, leading to its Hot 100 arrival (also aided by the post-Christmas drop-off of holiday songs) with 6.1 million U.S. streams (up 13%), 4.3 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 28%) and 2,000 downloads sold in the Dec. 30-Jan. 5 tracking week, according to Luminate.

The track is now also being promoted by Interscope Records to pop radio. As such, it rises 36-32 on the Pop Airplay chart, becoming Lady Gaga’s 23rd entry at the format upon its debut two weeks earlier. Born This Way generated five Pop Airplay hits during its original run: “Born This Way” (No. 1 for a week in April 2011), “Judas” (No. 15), “The Edge of Glory” (No. 3), “You and I” (No. 7) and then “Marry the Night” (No. 14).

Born This Way debuted at No. 1 on the June 11, 2011-dated Billboard 200 and spent two weeks on top, marking Lady Gaga’s first of six No. 1 albums. It went on to receive Grammy nominations for album of the year and best pop vocal album.

“Bloody Mary” earns Lady Gaga her 36th career entry on the Hot 100, and first since last year’s Top Gun: Maverick anthem “Hold My Hand,” which reached No. 49. She has banked five No. 1s: “Just Dance,” featuring Colby O’Donis (2009), “Poker Face” (2009), “Born This Way” (2011), “Shallow, with Bradley Cooper (2019), and “Rain on Me,” with Ariana Grande (2020).

Wednesday premiered on Netflix on Nov. 23, and its effect on “Bloody Mary” was almost immediate. In the Nov. 25-Dec. 1 tracking week, the song surged 424% in official on-demand U.S. streams, from 526,000 to 2.7 million, and 955% in digital song sales.

Further, “Bloody Mary” hits new highs on the Jan. 14-dated Billboard Global Excl. U.S. (No. 28) and Billboard Global 200 (No. 31) charts, after it first reached the former tally’s top 40 in December.
