Disney Music Group and AudioShake, an AI stem separation company, are teaming up. As part of their partnership, AudioShake will help Disney separate the individual instrument tracks (“stems”) for some of its classic back catalog and provide AI lyric transcription.
According to a press release, Disney says that it hopes this will “unlock new listening and fan engagement experiences” for the legendary catalog, which includes everything from the earliest recordings of Steamboat Willie (which is now in the public domain), to Cinderella, to The Lion King, to contemporary hits like High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

Given so many of Disney’s greatest hits were made decades ago with now-out-of-date recording technology, this new partnership will allow the company to use the music in new ways for the first time. Stem separation, for instance, can help with re-mixing and mastering old audio for classic Disney films. It could also allow Disney to isolate the vocals or the instrumentals on old hits.

Trending on Billboard

Disney’s partnership with AudioShake began when the tech start-up was selected for the 2024 Disney Accelerator, a business development program designed to accelerate the growth of new companies around the world. Other participants included AI voice company Eleven Labs and autonomous vehicle company Nuro.

At the accelerator’s Demo Day 2024, on May 23, AudioShake gave a hint at what could be to come in their partnership with Disney when AudioShake CEO, Jessica Powell, showed how stem separation could be used to fix muffled dialog and music in the opening scene of Peter Pan.

Disney explained at the Demo Day that many of their earlier recordings are missing their original stems and that has limited their ability to use older hits in sync licensing, remastering, and emerging formats like immersive audio and lyric videos.

“We were deeply impressed by AudioShake’s sound separation technology, and were among its early adopters,” says David Abdo, SVP and General Manager of Disney Music Group. “We’re excited to expand our existing stem separation work as well as integrate AudioShake’s lyric transcription system. AudioShake is a great example of cutting-edge technology that can benefit our artists and songwriters, and the team at AudioShake have been fantastic partners.”

“Stems and lyrics are crucial assets that labels and artists can use to open up recordings to new music experiences,” says Powell. “We’re thrilled to deepen our partnership with Disney Music Group, and honored to work with their extensive and iconic catalog.”

It’s no secret that Disney fame often leads to mainstream success, and over the course of the Billboard Hot 100 chart’s history, we’ve seen actors and musicians from Disney Channel movies and shows turn into some of today’s biggest stars.

Most recently, Sabrina Carpenter scored her first Hot 100 chart topping song with “Please Please Please,” which made its way to the top of the tally on the chart dated June 29, 2024. With the achievement, Carpenter joins a number of fellow Disney musicians to earn a No. 1 hit, including Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, Selena Gomez, Justin Timberlake and more.

Besides the chart toppers, there are a number of former Disney darlings that have Hot 100 hits under their belts, even though they didn’t reach the summit. For example, Vanessa Hudgens, Zac Efron and Drew Seeley‘s “Breaking Free” from High School Musical reached No. 4 on the chart dated February 11, 2006. Fellow HSM alums, Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel, got a No. 35 hit with “What I’ve Been Looking For” during the same week. Raven Symoné entered the chart way back in 1993 with “That’s What Little Girls Are Made Of” (No. 68) and reappeared in 2006 with “Strut” (No. 53), alongside fellow Cheetah Girls stars Adrienne Bailon, Sabrina Bryan and Kiely Williams. Hilary Duff‘s 2007 hit, “With Love,” meanwhile, peaked at No. 24 in 2007.

In the 2010s, Ross Lynch entered the chart alongside Grace Phipps and Jason Evigan with “Cruisin’ for a Bruisin’,” which peaked at No. 82 in 2013. Meanwhile, Demi Lovato notched their biggest chart hit with “Sorry Not Sorry,” which reached No. 6 on the tally dated Nov. 11, 2017.

Ryan Gosling — who was in The All-New Mickey Mouse Club in the 1990s, scored his first appearance on the Hot 100 when “I’m Just Ken,” from 2023 Barbie movie, debuted at No. 87.

In celebration of former Disney stars’ success on the charts, see below for a list of nine former Disney stars who have topped the Billboard Hot 100.

A California judge is refusing — for now — to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the Village People against Disney that claims the Hollywood giant blackballed the legendary disco band from performing at Walt Disney World.
In a ruling issued Friday (June 21), San Diego County Superior Judge Katherine Bacal ruled that the Village People could move forward with the case, which accuses Disney of violating state laws and committing fraud by placing a “do not book edict” on the group.

Disney had argued that it has a First Amendment right to hire — or to not hire — any band it chooses, citing a special California law designed to protect free speech. But in her ruling last week, the judge said the company had failed to prove that the statute applied to the case.

Trending on Billboard

Importantly, the decision does not mean the Village People will win the lawsuit. Instead, Bacal merely rejected Disney’s request to dismiss the case at the earliest stage. The two sides will now proceed to discovery and an eventual trial, where the band will need to fully prove its claims.

A spokesperson for Disney did not immediately return a request for comment.

Karen Willis, the wife of Village People lead singer Victor Willis, filed the case in September, claiming that Disney had broken the law by “outright refusing to seriously consider the group” for bookings at the Orlando, Fla., theme park: “This unfair business practice by Disney denied Village People an opportunity to fairly compete for a slot to perform at Disney,” the complaint read.

Though the case targets Disney, the lawsuit appears to be rooted in a dispute between members of the original Village People lineup over who gets to perform under the iconic name.

According to court filings, Willis returned to the group in 2017 and formed a “re-vamped version” of the Village People — in the process, replacing an existing lineup that had been touring under the name for years. The case claims that the earlier iteration, featuring two other original members, “did not go away quietly,” and that they “took offense” when Willis’ Village People took over their existing slot at Disney World for a series of 2018 performances.

After the spurned members allegedly contacted Disney to complain and “started a campaign” against the new band, the lawsuit claims that Disney “engaged in a series of outrageous and egregious conduct,” including failing to provide security and refusing to properly pay the act.

After Willis complained about being “treated very badly” during the new band’s 2018 run at the park, the lawsuit claims, Disney has since refused to rebook the group — imposing an effective ban on performing at the theme park. The lawsuit includes claims of breach of contract, unfair competition, fraud and conspiracy.

Ahead of last week’s ruling, Disney had argued that the case must be tossed out under California’s so-called anti-SLAPP provision — a law designed to quickly dismiss meritless lawsuits that threaten free speech. The studio argued that deciding which concerts to book was a form of constitutionally protected free speech rights and that it had the legal right to refuse to book the Village People.

Though Disney could very well still defeat the lawsuit, Bacal ruled on Friday that the company had failed to meet the specific legal requirements to use the anti-SLAPP law. In particular, the judge said Disney had failed to show that the dispute in the case was linked to the kind of “public conversation” that’s protected under the statute.

“There is no indication that defendants’ statements entered the public sphere,” Bacal wrote. “Defendants have not shown that the alleged statements contributed to or furthered the public conversation on an issue of public interest.”

The Descendants franchise returns next month, and in a music video premiering exclusively on Billboard below, the latest Villain Kid is caught red-handed.
Descendants: The Rise of Red — coming to Disney+ on July 12 before making its Disney Channel debut on Aug. 9 — introduces Kylie Cantrall (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) as Red, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts (Rita Ora) from Alice in Wonderland. The new video is for Cantrall’s signature song, simply titled “Red,” which sees her character evading the Wonderland soldiers (including Alex Boniello’s singing guard) protecting her queen mother as she skulks around in the shadows of the castle grounds.

“I’m on a path of destruction, this is gonna be fun,” Cantrall sings with a glint in her eye, wearing a bedazzled hood and red eye mask covered in hearts and throwing a red balloon filled with blood-red paint at a giant portrait of her tyrannical mom.

Trending on Billboard

“’Red’ is one of my favorite numbers in the film,” Cantrall tells Billboard of the original song. “It’s this explosive number – it’s bold and it’s fierce, kind of who Red is. It gives people a really cool look inside Wonderland and the trouble and mischief that Red gets up to when the lights go down and the village goes to sleep, she roams around the town and gets to be free and do her thing. The song shows who she is at her core and will give the audience a chance to really get to know her.”

In The Rise of Red — the fourth film in the Descendants franchise and the first since 2021’s The Royal Wedding — Cantrall’s Red teams up with Chloe (Malia Baker), the daughter of Cinderella (Brandy, reprising the role almost 30 years later), to travel back in time and try to prevent the Queen of Hearts’ evil reign.

In addition to the music video, fans can find “Red” on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and other digital platforms, and the film’s soundtrack is available for pre-order and pre-add via Walt Disney Records.

Descendants: The Rise of Red is directed by Jennifer Phang, with a script from Dan Frey and Russell Sommer, and executive-produced by Suzanne Todd and Gary Marsh. The movie is choreographed by Ashley Wallen (The Greatest Showman) with a score by Torin Borrowdale (Searching).

Set in the Caribbean-inspired fairytale kingdom of Atlantica, the series follows young Ariel (Mykal-Michelle Harris) as she embarks on underwater fun with her family and friends, including King Triton (Taye Diggs), Ursula (Amber Riley), Flounder (Gracen Newton) and mermaid friends Fernie (Cruz Flateau) and Lucia (Elizabeth Phoenix Caro).

[embedded content]

“I can’t even begin to tell you the enthusiasm in our workspace about putting this show together,” the series’ executive producer Lynne Southerland tells Billboard. “Everyone is really bringing their A-game. We all feel really honored to be moving the magic Ariel into a new space, a new way of seeing her and a new audience.”

Trending on Billboard

As to how this version of Ariel differs from the princess seen in the original 1989 film and the sub-sequent 2023 live-action film, Southerland says that the Disney Jr. mermaid is young but sure of herself. “It was very important to me that Ariel exudes a sense of personal agency, that she already kind of knows who she is at eight years old and we’re just watching her continue to grow and expand that sense of self,” she says. “We started with a core element of Ariel, which is her beautiful voice — but what are the many ways that voice expresses? How we communicate with others, how we express our dreams, how we can express ourselves when we make a mistake. To show her as a full character who is able to speak out rather than be closed up, that was really principal to this character.”

Harris, the 12-year-old actress who plays Ariel in the show, agrees, adding that she was encouraged to put her own spin on the character. “In this version, we’re seeing Ariel younger than we’ve ever seen her before, so it was important for me to add some qualities that she might have had when she was younger,” she explains. “A few qualities that I brought into this version of Ariel was her love of singing, of course, and also she was definitely an empath in the feature films. She is also just a really curious, excited person that always wants to explore the world around her.”

She continues, “It’s such a dream come true, playing the role of Ariel. It’s just so fulfilling, because I’ve always loved Disney princesses. I mean, who doesn’t? I always loved to watch Ariel, Elsa and Anna, Aladdin — all those classic Disney stories. I always wished to be Disney princess when I grow up, and now I actually am! My wish came true!”

Another crucial element of Disney Jr.’s Ariel is the protagonist’s relationship with her father, King Triton. “It’s not often that we get to see Black fathers in strong roles,” Southerland says. “There can be a perception of Black fathers as being stern. It was really important that Triton, despite being king, when he’s with his kids he’s just a dad who understands and loves his children and want the best for them.”

Diggs, a father himself who plays the underwater king, adds, “I love that he listens to his child. It sounds very simple, but you’d be surprised how many parents think that it’s their job to talk at their kid instead of listening to them. He’s the kind of father who listens and that’s the kind of father I’m striving to be.”

To conclude, Harris chimes in with what she hopes young viewers will gain from watching the new series. “It’s OK to be yourself. It’s OK to love who you are, it’s OK to like what you like, and I think Ariel really shows that,” she says. “There’s so much diversity and inclusion in this series, that you’ll definitely be able to see yourself in one of the characters.”

In addition to the Disney Jr.’s Ariel premiere episode airing June 27 on Disney Junior and later on Disney Channel, an initial batch of eight episodes will be available on Disney+ the following day (Friday, June 28). Plus, a new series of two-minute shorts, called Disney Jr.’s Ariel: Mermaid Tales, were previously featured across Disney+, Disney Channel and Disney Jr. beginning earlier this month, to build excitement around the new show.
