“This isn’t a documentary on a musician; I feel like it’s a documentary on grief,” Ed Sheeran says.
The singer-songwriter was at The Times Center in New York City on Tuesday night, wearing a simple white T-shirt and black leather moto jacket. He was seated alongside Gayle King, the moderator for the evening’s discussion, and the producers and director of his new Disney+ documentary, Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All, which he had screened moments before for the first time to a plush room full of press, some famous faces and a few lucky Sheerios.

Out now on Disney+, the four-part docuseries offers fans a powerful, honest glimpse into the “Bad Habits” troubadour’s personal life, exploring the aftermath of three events that rocked his world in February 2022: his wife Cherry Seaborn’s cancer diagnosis at six months’ pregnant, the copyright lawsuit over his No. 1 smash “Shape of You,” and the sudden, tragic death of his best friend Jamal Edwards.

These three tragedies and obstacles were ultimately the catalyst of Sheeran’s sixth album – (Subtract), out Friday via Atlantic Records, but they weren’t initially what he was planning to bare for the cameras after being approached by the team at Fulwell 73 about the documentary.

“We had a call and I said, ‘Look, this is what’s been actually going on in my personal life and I don’t really want to make a documentary on this,’” Sheeran recalls. “And [executive producer] Ben Winston was like, ‘Let’s just film it and see.’”

That approach results in the kind of vulnerable portrait of the artist fans have likely never seen before while simultaneously touching on universal themes of love, loss and pain. “I never wanted to make a documentary that was like, ‘Sad pop star and feel sorry for sad pop star,’” Sheeran says. “And what I think is really great about the documentary is the themes that it explores. Everyone goes through the fear of sickness in the family. Everyone goes through grief. Everyone goes through ups and downs in their mental health.”

Sheeran worked with Winston and his producing partner Ben Turner — whom he first met while writing songs for early One Direction albums like 2011’s Up All Night and 2012’s Take Me Home — particularly to honor the memory of Edwards, an influential figure in the London music scene who gave Ed a platform for his start in the music industry on the popular YouTube channel SBTV. (Sheeran’s first single “The A Team” went positively viral on the channel — leading to his record deal, smash debut album + (Plus) and everything that’s come since.)

And while the Grammy winner is proud to send his best friend’s legacy out into the world with the doc, he acknowledges that Edwards’ death has left a void that can never be filled with fame, success or another No. 1 single.

“I don’t think you ever process it, really,” he admits. “I think your life builds itself around grief. And I think that’s one thing I’ve actually really liked about making this documentary, is that more people than knew Jamal are now gonna know Jamal, you know? … I don’t think you should process it. I think to respect the person you’ve lost, you just have to live with it and allow yourself to be sad sometimes. And allow yourself to laugh at the fun memories and stuff like that! But to erase someone from your memory to not feel sad, I think is quite disrespectful to the memory of that person. So I allow myself to feel sad when I want to feel sad.”

Viewers can also look forward to getting to know Seaborn across the four episodes. She and Sheeran, who grew up as schoolmates in Suffolk, England, have always been notoriously guarded about their relationship, marriage and two daughters, both to preserve their family’s privacy and maintain a healthy sense of normalcy. However, they made the decision as a couple to temporarily open up about her unexpected health struggles as a way to help viewers find commonality and community with their story.

“It’s something that I talk to Cherry a lot about, because this is our life,” Sheeran says, noting Seaborn in the audience and revealing she thankfully has a clean bill of health these days and is attending “regular checkups” with her doctor.

“This isn’t something that’s scripted; it’s not a reality show,” he continues. “This is something that we’ve kept private for a very, very long time, and rightly so. We are a couple; we’re not celebrities who want to be out there on the red carpet. So what I’m hoping is that this documentary goes out there and exists for what it should exist for — which is a snapshot of grief and mental health and depression — and that we can close the door again and get on with our life.”

And while The Sum of It All‘s release coincides with Sheeran finally unveiling Subtract as the fifth and final album is his long-planned cycle of mathematically titled studio sets, the superstar confesses he’s decidedly nonchalant about how the album will be received by the masses or how it performs on the charts compared to his past mega-hits like 2014’s x (Multiply), 2017’s ÷ (Divide) and 2021’s = Equals — all of which bowed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and went on to sell millions of copies worldwide. (He’s already released “Eyes Closed” and “Boat” as the first two singles from Subtract. The former has so far peaked at No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100, far below the No. 2 peak of Equals‘ dance-infused lead-off “Bad Habits” or Divide‘s pair of career-defining No. 1s “Shape of You” and “Perfect.”)

“The album is my cathartic, therapeutic way of trying to make myself feel better,” he tells the audience. “I’m honestly putting it out because people think it’s good. But I wasn’t intending to put it out, I had a whole other album I was gonna put out. So I don’t really mind how it does. I’m just sort of like, ‘I’m gonna put it out and it will just exist and do its thing.’”

You can stream all four episodes of Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All now on Disney+. In the meantime, revisit the trailer for the docuseries below.

Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur premiered this week, and Diamond White gave Billboard News all the tea on the musical series in a new interview.

“Raphael Saadiq is executive producing all the music,” The X Factor alum and voice of Lunella Lafayette told Billboard‘s Tetris Kelly. “And if he’s in control of it, you know all the songs are gonna be good. You know how back in the day when The Proud Family had Beyoncé and her doing the theme song? It gives me that vibes. It’s that caliber of good.” (Technically, The Proud Family theme was performed by Queen Bey’s younger sister Solange with backup from Destiny’s Child during the show’s original run on Disney Channel from 2001 to 2005.)

Meanwhile, Alfre Woodard, who co-stars in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur as the titular superhero’s grandmother Mimi, promised that the series will feature a diverse soundtrack of “reggae, reggaeton, rap, classical, old-school funk, everything.”

Later, White also shared the message that she wants fans to take away from the latest addition to the Marvel world: “That one girl can make a difference. ‘You can’t be what you can’t see,’ as Laurence Fishburne said, so it’s nice that there’s a character showing a Black girl with a big brain.”

Also starring the voice talents of Fishburne, Fred Tatasciore, Sasheer Zamata, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Michael Cimino, Indya Moore, Craig Robinson and more, Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is currently airing weekly episodes on Disney Channel and Disney+.

J-Hope unveiled the first look at his upcoming documentary J-Hope IN THE BOX on Thursday.

“The start of this project?” the K-pop idol asks as the 30-second clip starts. “People in the world don’t know what kind of music J-Hope of BTS makes… I come out of the box and I want to welcome the larger world.”

The documentary promises to follow the BTS rapper through the release of his debut solo album Jack in the Box, including his historic, headlining performance at Lollapalooza 2022 last August. All of his BTS bandmates make an appearance in the trailer as well, posing for a photos together as J-Hope’s single “Arson” plays over the scene.

J-Hope IN THE BOX is set to premiere on Weverse and Disney+ around the world on Feb. 17, though ARMY and other fans will be able to start pre-ordering the music film one week earlier on Feb. 10.

Upon its release last summer, the old-school hip-hop-leaning studio set — which was preceded by lead single “More” — landed at No. 5 on Billboard‘s Top Album Sales chart and also scored J-Hope a top 20 hit on the Billboard 200 at No. 17.

At the time, the rapper confessed to NME that he was “a bit worried at first, because the Jack in the Box album contains my story and what I really wanted to do…I’m very grateful and feel motivated. So, for those who supported my music, I want to try many different things with my music, and show them all going forward.”

Since then, he’s performed a medley of Jack in the Box tracks at the 2022 MAMA Awards, appeared on New Year’s Rockin’ Eve to ring in the new year and most recently sat front row with Jimin at Paris Fashion Week.

Disney+ premiered its first teaser for Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, With Dave Letterman on Friday (Jan. 13).
“Dublin is a real part of our story,” Bono tells Letterman, adding, “It’s in our songs” before the clip cuts to a live performance of 2004’s “Vertigo.” As a montage of the rockers’ journey back to their homeland flashes across the screen, the U2 frontman’s voice can be heard singing, “Hello, hello/ I’m at a place called Vertigo/ It’s everything I wish I didn’t know/ Except you give me something/ I can feel.”

For his part, a bushy-bearded Letterman seems more than happy to be along for the ride, telling the U2 members, “Many nice things have happened for me in my life; this is right at the top of that list.”

Directed by Academy Award winner Morgan Neville, the documentary will debut March 17 on Disney+ and showcase Bono and The Edge‘s special concert performance in Dublin. A release announcing the special promises it will be “part concert movie, part travel adventure plus a whole lot of Bono and The Edge, with Dave’s humor throughout.”

“Recently, I won a radio contest,” said Letterman in a statement. “Winner gets to visit Dublin with Bono and The Edge (radio contest part not true, but I feel like a winner). They showed me around, introduced me to their musician friends, and performed some of their greatest songs in a small theater. It’s a great tour. Get in touch with them ― I’m told there are still availabilities. I’m the luckiest man on the planet. (There are no availabilities).”

The release of A Sort of Homecoming also happens to coincide with the release of Songs of Surrender, the upcoming compilation of 40 tracks selected from U2’s storied discography — including “One,” “Where the Streets Have No Name,” “Walk On (Ukraine)” and many, many more — which have been re-recorded and entirely reimagined by the band.

The critically acclaimed sequel film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, will soon arrive on Disney’s streaming service.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will make its debut on Disney Plus Feb. 1. The move was announced by Disney through their social media platforms, which brings the blockbuster film to homes three months after its release in November 2022.

The sequel to Marvel Studios’ 2020 hit finds Queen Ramonda (Bassett), Princess Shuri (Wright), Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and M’Baku (Winston Duke) all dealing with the aftermath of the death of the Black Panther, King T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman). As they mourn, they are faced with a new threat to the kingdom of Wakanda – and the rest of the planet – in Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejia) and the kingdom of Talokan.

Despite mishaps that included Wright missing time due to injury and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, audiences responded emphatically to the film which includes a tribute to Boseman, who tragically passed away from colon cancer in August 2020.
Domestic box office reports showed the film earned $181 million on its opening, placing it just second behind Doctor Strange and The Multiverse of Madness which was released earlier in the year. It would go on to be the sixth highest-grossing film released in 2022, with box office earnings listed at $821 million dollars.
The loss of Boseman was a shock to the cast as well as director Ryan Coogler, who admittedly had reservations about making Wakanda Forever or even directing at all as he was close to Boseman. “I didn’t know if I could make another movie period, [let alone] another Black Panther movie, because it hurt a lot. I was like, ‘Man, how could I open myself up to feeling like this again?’” Coogler said in an interview with GQ.
Wright also spoke of the emotional challenges in making the film and being present for the press runs afterward. “I’m bracing. I’ve seen some members of Chad’s team. When we lock eyes, we know how this feels. We have to take a step away,” she said in an interview. She continued: “I see my aunt locking my eyes with me, she’s very proud. I have to take a step away … It’s emotional. We’re trying to hold it together.”

It’s been a little over four years since the death of comic book legend/icon, Stan Lee, and in honor of what would’ve been his 100th birthday, Marvel has announced a new documentary dedicated to the man who helped make our childhood’s rock.

Taking to Twitter to announce the new documentary set to drop on Disney+, Marvel posted a quick 25-second teaser of the upcoming documentary while stating “100 years of dreaming. 100 years of creating. 100 years of Stan Lee. Stan Lee, an Original documentary, is streaming 2023 on @DisneyPlus.”

Showcasing his random appearances in multiple Marvel movies, the quick clip pays homage with a montage to the man behind Spider-Man, Ironman, the Incredible Hulk and many other classic comic book superheroes.
Being that it was his 100th birthday, many well-known celebrities and hardcore comic book fans took to Twitter to pay homage to the legend along with his official Twitter account which showered him with praise.

Should be cool to see how the documentary delves into Stan Lee’s thought process behind the creation of countless classic comic book characters and how they impacted pop culture.
Will you be checking for the Stan Lee documentary when it streams on Disney+ come 2023? Let us know in the comments section below.

For many Marvel fans one of the things they loved most about Netflix’s Daredevil series (aside from Charlie Cox’s brilliant performance) was the action scenes and violent fades that the Man Without Fear would dish on his enemies.

Unfortunately it seems that now the series is getting a new lease on life on Disney+, the excessive brutality that we’ve grown to love and appreciate will not be carrying over into Disney’s Daredevil: Born Again. In an interview with NME, the series star, Charlie Cox revealed that the rebooted series more than likely “won’t be as gory” as it’s predecessor. Confirming that the new series would begin shooting in February of 2023 and wrap up around the end of the year, Cox seemed convinced that the violence would be toned down for the Disney+ crowd. Cox isn’t upset with the change and is actually embracing the new Daredevil standards.

Related Stories

“This has to be a reincarnation, it has to be different, otherwise why are we doing it?,” Cox stated. “My opinion is this character works best when he’s geared towards a slightly more mature audience. My instinct is that on Disney+ it will be dark but it probably won’t be as gory.” He knows there are people who will be hoping for simply a continuation of the previous series. “I would say to those people, we’ve done that. Let’s take the things that really worked, but can we broaden? Can we appeal to a slightly younger audience without losing what we’ve learned about what works?”
That cool and all but… we. Want. Violence. We kid we kid.
If that’s the case with Disney+’s rebooted Daredevil, what would that mean for a series like The Punisher? His entire calling card is violence and gore. Will Disney+ water down Frank Castle’s demeanor if they decide to revive that series too? Fans won’t be too happy about that one.
Still, it will be interesting to see what’s in store for Daredevil in Born Again as Disney ordered a whopping 18-episodes to kick things off. That’s a lot of time to work in new angles and stories for one of the MCU’s most underrated superheroes.
“I’m fascinated to discover why they’ve chosen to do 18,” he says. “I’m imagining there’s going to be an element to it that is like the old-school procedural show. Not necessarily case-of-the-week, but something where we go really deep into Matt Murdock the lawyer and get to see what his life is like. If that’s done right and he really gets his hands dirty with that world… I think there’s something quite interesting about that, to spend a lot of time in a superhero’s day-to-day life and you really earn the moments when he suits up.”

Hopefully we don’t get a happy-go-lucky devil when it’s all said and done.
What do y’all think of Disney+ toning down the violence in Daredevil? Let us know in the comments section below.
