Lainey Wilson and HARDY are already winners heading into tonight’s (Nov. 8) 2023 CMA Awards.
This morning, the Country Music Association revealed that HARDY and Wilson’s dramatic murder ballad, “Wait in the Truck,” picked up trophies for musical event of the year and music video of the year.
“Wait in the Truck” was produced by HARDY, Joey Moi, Jordan Schmidt and Derek Wells, while Justin Clough directed the music video.
These mark HARDY’s first CMA Awards wins, while Wilson took home new artist of the year and female vocalist of the year during last year’s CMAs. Part of the song’s strength is the charismatic vocal interplay between the two singers, as well as the message tackling domestic abuse.
“You rarely hear songs like this that bring light to heavy situations that people are really scared to talk about,” Wilson previously told Billboard of “Wait in the Truck.” “I feel, in my heart, that our job is to sing about the things that people are afraid to talk about. It’s a song that definitely starts a conversation.”
Co-producer Moi also previously noted, “When somebody’s had the guts to write something completely alternative and also make it sound completely mainstream at the same time, it’s a unicorn-type song.”
Heading into this year’s ceremony, Wilson leads the nominees with nine total nominations (including entertainer of the year and female vocalist of the year), while HARDY picked up four nods. “Wait in the Truck” is also up for both single of the year and song of the year.
The 57th annual CMA Awards will air tonight on ABC from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, beginning at 8 p.m. ET. Wilson and HARDY are both slated as performers, as well as Kelsea Ballerini, Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney, Luke Combs, Dan+Shay, Jordan Davis, Alan Jackson, Jelly Roll, K. Michelle, Little Big Town and more.
The 57th Annual CMA Awards is a production of the Country Music Association. Robert Deaton is the executive producer, Alan Carter is the director and Jon Macks is the head writer.
Leading up to this year’s CMA Awards in Nashville, Dolly Parton takes ABC News’ Robin Roberts behind the scenes of her new album, Rock Star.
The hourlong ABC News special Dolly Parton – From Rhinestones to Rock & Roll will air Tuesday from 10-11 p.m. ET. Together, Parton and Roberts discuss Dolly’s collaborations with numerous rock artists on her new album, including Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Pat Benatar, Peter Frampton, John Fogerty and Steven Tyler. Current CMA Awards co-host Luke Bryan will host the special.
They also discuss the stories behind many of Parton’s iconic fashion looks over the years. Those fashions and stories make up Parton’s newly released book Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones. The book was also celebrated during the recent grand-opening celebration of Parton’s fashion exhibit at Lipscomb University in Nashville.
The trailer for the hourlong special features a plethora of artists discussing what they love about the 77-year-old member of both the Country Music and Rock & Roll Halls of Fame. The special features appearances from Jelly Roll, Carly Pearce, Keith Urban, Cody Johnson, Miranda Lambert, Sting, Lainey Wilson, Darius Rucker, Tim McGraw, Jordan Davis and Luke Combs.
“Ask me what I love about Dolly Parton, and I’ll say everything,” “Need a Favor” singer Jelly Roll says in the special.
Though Parton’s accomplishments, talent and confidence are world-class, she also reveals to Roberts that she has her moments of nervousness too.
“I’m scared sometimes, you know, I’m not made of stone,” Parton says at one moment in the preview clip.
The upcoming CMA Awards, hosted by Bryan and Peyton Manning, will air live on ABC from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Nov. 8. Leading this year’s nominees are Lainey Wilson with nine nominations (including her first entertainer of the year nod) and first-time nominee Jelly Roll, with five nominations.

You may be aware that Brooks & Dunn and Vince Gill are tied for the most CMA Awards wins with 18 each. But Brooks & Dunn won most of their awards, and Gill won all of his, in the last century. So who leads for the most awards won in this century? We have prepared a list of everyone who has won five or more CMA Awards since 2000.
The 57th annual CMA Awards are set to air Wednesday, Nov. 8, on ABC. Luke Bryan and Peyton Manning will co-host the show for a second year in a row. It will be held at its usual home, Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.
Lainey Wilson — who won two awards, including new artist of the year, last year — is this year’s top nominee, with nine nods. If she wins just three of them, she’ll join this list of artists who have won five or more CMA Awards in this century.
We’ll get to the list, we promise, but first, to tease you just a bit more, we have four lists of all-time CMA winners: The five acts with the most wins are Brooks & Dunn and Vince Gill (18 each), George Strait (17), Alan Jackson (16) and Chris Stapleton (15).
The six female solo artists with the most wins are Miranda Lambert (14), Dolly Parton and Taylor Swift (nine each), Loretta Lynn (eight), and Alison Krauss and Carrie Underwood (seven each).
The five groups with the most wins are The Chicks (10), Alabama and The Statler Brothers (nine each), Little Big Town (eight) and Rascal Flatts (seven).
The five duos with the most wins are Brooks & Dunn (18), The Judds (nine), Brothers Osborne (six), Sugarland (five) and Florida Georgia Line (four).

The final nominees for the 57th annual Country Music Association Awards were revealed Thursday morning (Sept. 7), with this year’s slate of nominees reflecting the chart dominance of an array of artists, but leaning heavily on giving recognition to relative newcomers whose starpower is surging — including Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll, HARDY and Jordan Davis. Lainey Wilson is the top nominee for the 2023 CMA Awards, with nine nods. Wilson was also the top nominee last year, with six nods. Wilson is the first artist in CMA history to top the nominations list in her first two appearances on the final ballot.
Moreover, Wilson is just the fourth artist in CMA history to land nine or more nominations in a single year. She follows Merle Haggard (nine nods in 1970), Alan Jackson (a record 10 nods in 2002) and Miranda Lambert (nine nods in both 2010 and 2014).
Wilson is the first artist in 13 years to land two nominations for single of the year in the same year. Wilson is nominated for “Heart Like a Truck” and as a featured artist on HARDY’s “wait in the truck.” Lambert was the last artist to land two nods in this category in one year; she was nominated in 2010 with both “The House That Built Me” and “White Liar.”
First-time nominee Jelly Roll landed five nominations, second only to Wilson for the most nods this year.
Luke Combs and HARDY each collected four nominations. Jordan Davis, Ashley McBryde, producer/mix engineer Joey Moi, songwriter/producer Jordan Schmidt, Chris Stapleton, Morgan Wallen and musician/producer Derek Wells each secured three nods.
Two women are nominated for entertainer of the year for the fourth consecutive year. Carrie Underwood and Wilson are nominated this year. Underwood and Lambert were both nominated in each of the last three years. This is the first time in CMA history that two women (or woman-led groups) have been nominated four years running.
The other entertainer of the year nominees are Combs, who won in that category the last two years; Stapleton, nominated for the seventh time; and Wallen, nominated for the second year in a row.
Women dominate the album of the year nominations for the second year in a row. Wilson, McBryde and Kelsea Ballerini are nominated in that marquee category this year. Wilson, Lambert and Maren Morris were nominated last year.
The other nominees in that category this year are Combs and Wallen.
Lambert landed her 17th nomination for female vocalist of the year, which puts her in a tie with Martina McBride for second place in that category; Reba McEntire leads with 18 nominations.
Little Big Town landed their 18th nomination for vocal group of the year; only Alabama has had more nods (21).
Brooks & Dunn was nominated for vocal duo of the year for a record-extending 24th time.
Three of the five song of the year nominees were written by gaggles of four or more songwriters, a change from past practices in country songwriting circles. A fourth was written by a three-member team. The only nominee written by a solitary songwriter was written 35 years ago: Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car,” nominated this year because of Combs’ smash cover version.
Chapman isn’t the only Black artist to receive a CMA nod this year in a high-profile category: The War and Treaty, consisting of married couple Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter, is nominated for vocal duo of the year for the first time.
Davis’ “Next Thing You Know” and “Wait in the truck” by HARDY featuring Wilson are this year’s only works to receive nominations for single, song and video of the year. “Fast Car” and “Heart Like a Truck” were both nominated for single and song of the year, but not music video of the year.
First-time CMA Awards nominees — besides the aforementioned Jelly Roll, Chapman and The War and Treaty — include Mason Allen, Trannie Anderson, Renee Blair, Michael H. Brauer, Katelyn Brown, Zach Bryan, Josh Ditty, David Fanning, Nicki Fletcher, Greylan James, Paul Jenkins, Gena Johnson, Chase McGill, Cameron Montgomery, Megan Moroney, Austin Nivarel, Eivind Nordland, John Osborne, Hunter Phelps, David Ray Stevens, Patrick Tohill, Alysa Vanderheym, Hailey Whitters, Ben Williams, Dallas Wilson and Charlie Worsham.
Fiddle player Jenee Fleenor, who has won musician of the year four years running, is nominated again this year. She faces steel guitarist Paul Franklin, who is nominated in the category for the 31st time; guitarist Derek Wells (his eighth time); guitarist Rob McNelley (his second); and multi-instrumentalist Charlie Worsham (his first).
Winners will be determined in a final round of voting by eligible voting CMA members. The third and final ballot will be emailed to CMA professional members on Monday, Oct. 2. Voting closes on Friday, Oct. 27. CMA Broadcast Awards winners will be determined by a final round of judging this month. Entries are judged by a panel of broadcast professionals, representing all market sizes and regions. Winners will be revealed in October and will be honored at the CMA Awards. All balloting is tabulated by Deloitte.

The first CMA Awards Banquet and Show was held at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville in 1967. The following year, the CMA Awards was broadcast for the first time on NBC – making it the longest-running annual music awards program on network television. The CMA Awards have aired on ABC since 2006.
