Record Store Day’s Black Friday festivities on Nov. 24 yielded big gains for vinyl album sales in the U.S., thanks to hot-selling titles by the likes of Linkin Park, Olivia Rodrigo, The Doors, U2 and Post Malone – all released exclusively for the indie store holiday.

According to Luminate, in the tracking week ending Nov. 30, the top five-selling Record Store Day (RSD) Black Friday album release were Linkin Park’s Lost Demos (on translucent sea blue vinyl), Rodrigo’s four-song Guts: The Secret Tracks (on opaque deep purple vinyl), The Doors’ Live in Bakersfield, California, August 21, 1970 (on double vinyl), U2’s U2 Live: Under a Blood Red Sky (on red vinyl, naturally) and Post Malone’s The Diamond Collection (on clear double vinyl). (See lists below, which are ranked by album sales generated in the week ending Nov. 30.)

The Doors’ Live in Bakersfield set was released on both vinyl and as a two-CD set, and their combined sales across the two configurations make the album the RSD Black Friday top-seller overall for the week.

Typically, many unique and limited-edition titles – both albums and singles – are released for RSD Black Friday celebrations, exclusively sold through independent and small chain music stores. Record Store Day traditionally has its main indie store holiday in the springtime (2023’s edition was held on April 22), followed by a secondary shindig for Black Friday.

In the week ending Nov. 30, U.S. vinyl album sales industry-wide (across all sellers of music, not just indie stores and small chains) grew 67% to 1.748 million sold (up from 1.046 million sold the previous week). Independent store vinyl album sales for the week jumped 149% to 829,000 (up from 333,000 the previous week). 47.4% of all vinyl albums sold in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 30 were purchased at independent and small chain music stores (829,000 of 1.748 million).

With 1.748 million vinyl albums sold industry-wide, that marks the fifth-largest week for vinyl album sales in the U.S. in the modern era, since Luminate began electronically tracking music sales in 1991. (It’s also the second-largest week of 2023 for vinyl album sales, following the week ending April 27, which captured Record Store Day 2023, with 1.809 million sold). The biggest week since 1991 for vinyl album sales was the week ending Dec. 22, 2022, when 2.232 million vinyl albums were sold.

Black Friday has come and gone, but Target is being called out after a viral TikTok exposed some alleged sale price shenanigans going on.
Spotted on TMZ, Target has responded to a viral TikTok post of Gen Z’ers targeting Black Friday sale signage only to reveal that the alleged sale price is exactly the same as the product’s regular price, suggesting the retail chain is out here hoodwinking and bamboozling customers.

One video making its rounds on X, formerly known as Twitter, features a woman pulling back the Black Friday deals signage claiming a Samsung TV $649.99 is a sale price only to show it cost the same before the “shopping holiday.”

Target’s Explanation For The Sketchy Signage
A spokesperson for Target responded to the viral posts, suggesting the post is pretty much a nothingburger and the television in question was on sale as part of Target’s early Black Friday deals.
Per TMZ:

A Target rep is addressing the viral “call-out” from TikTokers, telling TMZ … “A recent TikTok video showed a guest questioning if there was a sale on three Samsung TVs that had both a Black Friday sale sign, as well as a sale sign behind it indicating the same price.”

They add, “In fact, the TVs were on sale before Black Friday as part of our early Black Friday sales. We continued to offer those items at the same discount during Black Friday, but updated the signage to reflect the extended timing. “

The rep continues, “In both instances, guests would have saved the same amount, between $20-$80 depending on which TV they purchased. Those discounted prices compared to the regular prices are clearly shown in both sale signs in the video.

And finally, “We know our guests are looking for flexibility when they shop holiday deals, which is why we began Black Friday deals in late October and will continue offering great discounts throughout the holiday season. We also offer a Price Match Guarantee, and will match the price of any item purchased by a guest that is offered at a lower price later in the season.”

Is Target Also Price Gouging With Clothes?
Televisions were not the only thing TikTokers believed they were exposing. They also took the trend to the clothing section in Target and pulled the price sticker back on a pair of pants, revealing the price had gone up from $25 to $30.If you’re a seasoned shopper, you would know this practice to take advantage of the holiday season, especially Black Friday, and other doorbuster sales is not new.

But, let TikTok tell you, it just started.

On Black Friday (Nov. 24), Garth Brooks will give fans an early look at his Friends in Low Places Bar & Honky-Tonk in downtown Nashville, opening the bar with his own “dive bar” concert taking place at the new venue.

The Amazon Music Live special concert will be livestreamed for everyone to watch, beginning at 7 p.m. ET and available via Amazon Prime Video and the Amazon Music channel on Twitch — even for those without an Amazon Prime subscription or an Amazon account. Additionally, the Black Friday NFL game between the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets will transition directly into the concert following the game. Over on Twitch, a pre-show will begin at 6 p.m. ET, hosted by Amber Anderson and Kelly Sutton, who spearhead Amazon Music’s Country Heat Weekly podcast.

The Country Music Hall of Famer’s Friends in Low Places Bar & Honky-Tonk, located at 411 Broadway in Nashville, is the latest country artist-owned bar to dot downtown Nashville, joining venues from Florida Georgia Line, Dierks Bentley, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Alan Jackson and Miranda Lambert, among others.

During a press conference held at his new Friends in Low Places Bar in Nashville, Brooks noted that his Black Friday concert will welcome a special guest: Ronnie Dunn, who will join Brooks to perform their current radio duet “Rodeo Man” together live for the first time. The duet is included on Brooks’ new album Time Traveler and debuted in the top 30 on Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart.

In a nod to the venue’s namesake song, “Friends in Low Places,” two towering palm trees overlooking the venue’s massive, retractable stage are named for the songwriters behind Brooks’ signature hit: Earl Bud Lee and Dwayne Blackwell. “Friends in Low Places,” included on Brooks’ 1990 album No Fences, spent four weeks atop Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart. The song was also named single of the year by both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music.

Brooks explained his reasoning behind opting to name the bar after his signature song rather than simply license his name. “Hopefully as an artist is you realize that the song outlives the artist,” Brooks said. “So that’s why it’s not ‘The Garth Bar.’ It’s Friends in Low Places. … You can like Garth Brooks, you can not like Garth Brooks. Either way, chances are you’ve probably sang ‘Friends in Low Places’ at a wedding or something with everybody else.”

He also noted that, similar to his previous Dive Bar concerts in other cities, this will be a truncated performance, expected to wrap in under an hour.

Brooks also noted that the bar won’t fully open until March 2024, though the two bottom floors will be open during the soft opening on Friday and on weekends leading up to the March 2024 full opening.

However, don’t expect to see Brooks doing pop-up shows at the bar; he told reporters during the press conference that he wants to keep the focus on the bar being a place for the next generation of artists to hone their skills. He also noted to Billboard that he doesn’t plan to be involved in selecting the artists and/or bands who perform at the bar.

“My thing is, let’s get as many people in here. The more people get to play, the more chances new people get,” he told Billboard, noting that the stage is also retractable. “There’s a green room to show a little bit of what the future is for them, and of course, everything’s about the crew.”

The Oklahoma native also noted the venue’s location is full-circle for him. The building used to be known as Paradise Park Trailer Park bar, and the rooftop is where Brooks celebrated in 2019 after winning his seventh CMA entertainer of the year accolade.

Brooks said that his motivation to launch the Friends in Low Places Bar & Honky-Tonk ultimately stems from a desire to give back to Nashville’s community.

“We are part of the ‘Neon neighborhood’ down here, inviting everyone to Lower Broad. I want this to be a good thing for Lower Broadway.”
