Omah Lay is making waves and an impact in the Afrobeats genre. The singer shares his “Moving” story behind his latest single, working with Tyla and Justin Bieber and how his move to London from Lagos further contributed to the vision. He also talks about his new album, ‘Clarity of Mind,’ what he hopes his fans can take away from the album and more!
Tetris Kelly:
Hey, it’s Tetris with Billboard News, and I’m hanging out with Omah Lay. How’s it going my man?
Omah Lay:
I’m good. It’s going well, how are you doing?
I’m good. Man, I gotta tell you, congrats on the new single, “Moving.” Tell me about this song and what was the inspiration behind it.
“Moving” is the second single off of my next project. It was all inspired by by moving to a new place. I actually have not been spending a lot of time in Lagos recently. I’ve been spending a lot of time in London, especially making the album. It’s just a new environment being able to move from one place to another, to be your police then.
And tell me about the music video for the song. How involved are you in the visuals and what kind of story did you want to tell?
I mean, recently, I’ve been emphasizing on telling the story of my music through the music videos. For “Moving” I am telling the story of how illegal immigrants travel to Europe through the desert, through Sahara, because the thing about Nigerians from Edo traveling, trying to get to Europe illegally, and going through the desert, and a lot of them don’t make it through and stuff. So yeah, that was just the story. That was what inspired the video for “Moving.”
Oh, man, that’s incredible now. I like that, you’re able to take kind of your life experience and apply it with something else that’s from your region, that kind of, give you that story.
I mean, I think it is, if it is something, it is the story of the whole world, like me, also having a Nigerian passport is very difficult. Traveling where it’s like, I’m just looking for peace. I’m looking for a place to call, of course, I have my home, but like, you know, I’m just looking for that place to like, feel accepted and stuff, because home is really bad where we can’t stay at home and like, enjoy the common things that is being provided by even God, by nature, which is like, what being able to live freely. It’s difficult in Lagos, so I feel like I’m telling the story of the whole world, where everybody’s looking for some place to find peace of mind, some place to just call home and feel relaxed.

CeeLo Green and Dallas Austin give Billboard an exclusive tour of James Brown’s home in Augusta, Georgia, in partnership with Primary Wave.
CeeLo GreenI know between you and I, I’m not the biggest James Brown fan.
Dallas AustinYeah.
CeeLo GreenI bet you don’t know his highest-charting hit.
Dallas AustinI might say like “Living In America,” just because ‘Rocky’ was so big.
CeeLo GreenThat’s a good one. But nope, incorrect. “I Got You.”
What’s up, everybody? This is yours truly, CeeLo Green, and I am here transmitting live from Augusta, Georgia, with my big brother, Dallas Austin, and we are, believe it or not, in James Brown’s estate.
Dallas AustinWow.
CeeLo GreenAnd I’m here with Billboard, and we’re gonna take him on a tour. Let’s go.
Dallas AustinWow!
CeeLo GreenCheck it out.
Dallas AustinWow. This is crazy. So everything’s left as is.
CeeLo GreenYeah this is probably besides the entire property. This one piece of archive history is probably the most important and significant for me, because it’s right when you walk in the front door.
Dallas AustinWas this the tree that he put up the same Christmas as the Christmas of him passing? Right?
CeeLo GreenYeah, so James passed in 2006 if I’m not mistaken, and you know, the people that worked underneath him, they just kind of honored his legacy by just leaving everything untouched. So this was really moving for me.
Dallas AustinThis gave me chills myself
CeeLo GreenAnd it inspired a Gnarls Barkley song called “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul Now.” Oh, it did. I was talking about James Brown, yeah.

At the top of the list? None other than drum legend and Foo Fighters frontman, Dave Grohl, whose thunderous beats grace two tracks on the album, “Broken Man” and “Flea.”
Trending on Billboard
“Dave Grohl is a buddy, and he’s, well, Dave Grohl,” Clark told Rolling Stone AU/NZ as she prepares to head Down Under for ALWAYS LIVE 2024. “I thought, ‘What if fucking Dave Grohl played on this song?’ Then I remembered, oh, I can hit him up, you know? He was totally down, so generous and cool, and just came over to my studio and killed it.”
For the multitalented artist, Grohl’s contribution wasn’t just an exciting feature—it was a full-circle moment that bridged her past and present.
“He’s the best. I mean, he’s everything you want him to be,” St. Vincent enthused. “I wouldn’t be playing if it wasn’t for the music of Dave Grohl and Nirvana, so it’s really full circle.”
But the drumming deity isn’t the only notable name to make an appearance on All Born Screaming. She also welcomed contributions from a host of talented musicians, including Rachel Eckroth, Josh Freese, and Justin Meldal-Johnsen.
St. Vincent also spoke highly of the creative synergy she shared with singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon on the album’s title track.
“Cate’s one of my best friends and, honestly, my favorite modern songwriter,” she revealed.
“I was really at a point in making the record where I was close to being done but just burnt out. I brought Cate in to play bass on some songs and sing and just get her take on it. She was so helpful.”
As the mastermind behind All Born Screaming, Clark also took on the role of producer for the first time, navigating the challenges of wearing multiple hats. “It’s not for the faint of heart,” she confesses. “You wrestle with ego, you wrestle with self-doubt, you wrestle with all kinds of things.”
St. Vincent has consistently made her mark on the Billboard 200 with several of her albums. Her 2009 album Actor reached No. 90, followed by Strange Mercy in 2011, which climbed to No. 19. In 2012, her collaboration with David Byrne, Love This Giant, peaked at No. 23. Her self-titled album St. Vincent in 2014 reached No. 12, and Masseduction in 2017 peaked at No. 10.
