Ayo Edebiri

Ayo Edebiri is poking fun at herself on Saturday Night Live.
The Emmy-winning The Bear actress, who hosted the Feb. 3 episode of the iconic NBC comedy show, appeared in the sketch “Why’d You Say It,” where game show contestants are asked to explain why they left unsavory comments on other people’s Instagram posts.

After being grilled by the game show’s host (played by SNL cast member Kenan Thompson) about why she left the comment “Die” under a video post where actress Drew Barrymore is enjoying a rainy day, Edebiri’s character Annie tries to give excuses for her negative reaction before finally admitting the truth.

“I meant die, like I’m dying! I love this vid so much,” she says while being interrupted by a wrong answer buzzer. “I meant slay, but I forgot the word. I saw someone being happy and wanted them to feel the exact opposite.”

Thompson quickly responds, “That’s close but it’s not the right answer,” to which Edebiri finally gives the correct reply. “I’m alone a lot, some days I don’t even interact with another human being. And I start wondering, am I dead? Is life even real? So I post comments that I think will get a response from someone because that’s the only way to be certain I am alive.”

Later in the skit, Edebiri’s Annie breaks down and seemingly addresses comments she made in real life about Jennifer Lopez — who also appeared as the SNL episode’s musical guest — during a 2020 appearance on the podcast Scam Goddess, where she told host Laci Mosley that J.Lo’s music career was “one long scam.”

“OK, OK! We get it. It’s wrong to leave mean comments or post comments just for clout — or run your mouth on a podcast and you don’t consider the impact because you’re 24 and stupid,” Edebiri’s Annie says in the sketch. “But I think I speak for everyone when I say, from now on, we’re going to be a lot more thoughtful about what we post online.”

Ayo Edebiri will be hosting Saturday Night Live for the first time, and superstar Jennifer Lopez will be the episode’s musical guest.
The impressive run for comedian and actress Ayo Edebiri is continuing, as it was announced that she will be hosting Saturday Night Live for the first time. Edebiri will host the long-running NBC show on Feb. 3, and Jennifer Lopez will join in as the musical guest for that episode. This weekend’s episode will feature actress Dakota Johnson as the host, with pop star Justin Timberlake serving as the musical guest.

The news comes as Edebiri is fresh off of winning the Emmy Award for Best Supporting Comedy Actress for her role as Sydney Adamu in FX’s The Bear. She also won the Critics Choice Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy TV Series. Edebiri also starred in Theatre Camp and Bottoms last year. As a writer, she’s worked on Apple TV+’s Dickinson and Netflix’s Big Mouth as well as The Rundown with Robin Thede.
Edebiri was also a part of the writer’s room for another hit FX show, What We Do In The Shadows, which garnered her a Writers Guild Awards nomination. The Boston, Massachusetts, native’s SNL appearance won’t be without a lack of ties to the show – she’s hosted a comedy show with Ben Marshall, who heads up the show’s “Please Don’t Destroy” segment.
For Jennifer Lopez, the visit will be her fourth time appearing on Saturday Night Live. Her first time was as a musical guest in 2000. She doubled as a host and musical performer in 2001 and 2010. Lopez last appeared on the show alongside DaBaby in 2019. This latest appearance comes as Lopez is about to release This Is Me…Now, her first album in 10 years with a narrative film to be released through Amazon Prime Video Feb. 16.

As Marvel continues to chug along with their massively successful cinematic universe and get Phase 5 of their plan underway, Deadline is reporting that their upcoming film, Thunderbolts, just added a new actress to their impressive roster. Details are being kept under wraps for now.

According to the report, Marvel has just signed The Bear breakout star, Ayo Edebiri, to take part in the Thunderbolts film in an undisclosed role. Edebiri joins an all-star cast that already includes Harrison Ford, Sebastian Stan, Hannah John-Kamen, Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Florence Pugh, David Harbour and Olga Kurylenko. Fans are curious as to what role and which comic book character (if any) Edebiri will take on in the Jake Schreier directed film.

Regardless to whom or what though, this is a great look for the up and coming star who’s been making a name for herself in the acting game as of late.
The project marks Edebiri first major studio starring role. She plays Sydney Adamu in The Bear, earning a Critics Choice Award nomination, and is expected to be a player in this year’s Emmy race. Season 2 will premiere this summer on FX on Hulu.
On the film side, she recently appeared in Theater Camp opposite Ben Platt, which just had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The film became one of the bigger sales at the fest, with Searchlight landing rights to distribute.
Should be interesting to see what Marvel has in store for Ayo Edebiri in Thunderbolts. Aside from starring the aforementioned actors in their already established Marvel superhero roles (Bucky Barnes a.k.a. The Winter Soldier (Stan), Ava Starr a.k.a. Ghost (John-Kamen), John Walker a.k.a. U.S. Agent (Russell), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Louis-Dreyfus), Yelena Belova a.k.a Black Widow (Pugh), Alexei Shostakov a.k.a. The Red Guardian (Harbour) and Antonia Dreykov a.k.a. Taskmaster (Kurylenko), little is known about the actual plot of Marvel’s Phase 5 film.
What we do know is that Harrison Ford will be taking on the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross after the character’s original actor, William Hurt, passed away last year. Ford will be making his MCU debut in Captain America 4: New World Order where he’s said to be the President of The United States while also being the film’s antagonist against Anthony Mackie’s Captain America. Only question fans have is will Ford turn into the Red Hulk in Captain America 4 or the Thunderbolts?
Who do you think Ayo Edebiri will be playing in Thunderbolts? Will you be checking for the film when it drops July 26, 2024? Let us know in the comments section below.
